Learning a second language
Nowadays, more and more people are learning a second language. So why should we invest time in learning a second language? Is it worth it? What are the benefits of learning a second language? Let us see.
If your work involves regular contact with speakers of foreign languages, being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them better. It may also help you to make sales and to negotiate and secure contracts. Knowledge of foreign languages may also increase your chance of finding a new job, getting a promotion or a transfer overseas, or of going on foreign business trips.
Needless to say, being able to speak a foreign language, for example, the Japanese, would benefit you a lot when you are travelling to Japan. Being able to speak the language of the target country will save you a lot of communication trouble and inconvenience.
Education
If you are a high school student or a college student who is interested in going abroad for further education, then you will, in all possibility, have to learn the language of the country where you wish to move to, for further studies.
Learning a second language can help in broadening one's horizon, it can help in learning about the culture of that particular country and it can pave the way for new interests and hobbies. Not only can you enjoy forms of art and literature connected with the new language, but you can also meet new people, make new friends and develop long-lasting relationships…all on the basis of learning a new language.
A. Travel B. Career C. Personal Growth D. Challenging Yourself E. You may be required to study a particular language at school, college or university. F. If you are fond of tourism, then knowledge of the local language is a must—have to avoid bad experiences or discomfort. G. In some cases or countries, being able to speak that country's national language is a must for students wishing to pursue education in that country. |
Those who are used to looking through thousands of books in big bookstores may find Japan's Morioka Shoten a little strange. That's because this tiny bookstore that is located in Ginza, Tokyo offers only one title at a time.
Opened in May 2015, Morioka Shoten is the brainchild of Yoshiyuki Morioka. The experienced bookseller began his career as a bookstore clerk in Tokyo's Kanda district before branching out to open his own store. It was here while organizing book readings that he realized that customers usually came into the store with one title in mind. Morioka began to wonder if a store could exist by selling many copies of just one single book. In November 2014, he partnered with his two friends, to establish a unique bookstore with the idea of "A Single Room, A Single Book".
Like its offering, the bookstore is simple. The selections that are picked by Morioka change weekly and vary widely to attract customers with different interests. Recent choices include The True Deceiver, an award-winning Swedish novel by Tove Jansson, Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales, and a collection of artist Karl Blossfeldt's photography of plants. Morioka has also chosen books written by famous Japanese authors Mimei Ogawa and Akito Akagi.
To highlight his only offering, Morioka often uses clever methods. For example, when selling a book about flowers, he decorated his shop with the ones that had been mentioned in the book. He also encourages authors to hold talks and discussions so they can connect with customers. Morioka says his goal is for the customers to experience being inside a book, not just a bookstore!
Risky as the idea might seem, things appear to be going well. Morioka says he has sold over 2, 100 books since he opened it. Things can get better considering that his bookstore is becoming increasingly popular not just among the locals but also visitors from other countries.
Dear Bob,
I'm so glad to learn that you are come in September. I found a place for you. It's a small flat of 25 square metre, with a bedroom, a bathroom or a kitchen. In the bedroom there is a bed, a sofa, a desk and the chair. The rent is 500 yuans per month. The flat is in a building on Fangcao Street, it is not far from Jianxin Chinese School. Bus No. 11 can take you straightly to the school. In fact, it's only one stop way. Do you think you'd like it? If so , I can try and find another place for you. Just let me know.

Taking a math test can be pretty stressful. Even if you know the material, you can still get the problem wrong. Knowing how to go through your math test and check your work can save you from handing in a test full of mistakes that can be avoided.
Write it out
You can also check a math problem by writing everything out on paper. Writing out math problems reduces your chances of missing anything to the lowest possible level, which is a common cause of incorrect answers.
Make sure your answers work by doing the opposite procedure of what your problem calls for, including the answer you got the first time around. In other words, you would use the opposite of this addition problem—subtraction (减法)—to determine whether or not your answer is the correct one.
Plugging in
You may find that a variable isn't good enough or have a problem where you have to solve for a variable (变量). This is the only real way to assure yourself that the answer you've found is correct.
Check for a reasonable answer
For example, if you get an answer in the millions and you know it should be in the thousands, you've likely misplaced a point. Go back through the work on your paper to make sure all of your formulas and calculations are correct. If everything looks okay, do the problem again and compare the result of the second try to what you've got on the first try.
A. Do the opposite B. Correct the answers C. Plug the variable in the equation (方程) to check it out. D. Therefore you'll improve your grades, as well as your math skills. E. It also helps you to figure out everything after you have already finished the test. F. If the result of a problem seems to make no sense, it indicates that the answer is incorrect. G. This helps you to know what information you have and what information you need to solve. |
As I begin to tell my friends about the seven days you treated my wife, Laura, in what turned out to be the last days of her young life, they stop me at about the 15th name that I recall. The list includes the doctors, nurses, social workers, and even cleaning staff members who cared for her.
“How do you remember any of their names?” they ask.
“How could I not?” I respond.
Every single one of you treated Laura with such professionalism and kindness and dignity as she lay unconscious. When she needed shots, you apologized that it was going to hurt a little, whether or not she could hear. When you listened to her heart and lungs through your stethoscopes(听诊器)and her gown (长衫)began to slip, you pulled it up to respectfully cover her. You spread a blanket when the room was just a little cold and you thought she'd sleep more comfortably that way.
You cared so greatly for her parents, helping them climb into the room's awkward recliner(躺椅), fetching them fresh water almost by the hour, and answering every one of their medical questions with patience.
Then there was how you treated me. How many times did you walk into the room to find me sobbing, my head down and resting on her hand, and quietly go about your task, as if willing yourselves invisible? How many times did you help me set up the recliner as close as possible to her bedside? How many times did you check on me to see whether I needed anything, from food to drink, from fresh clothes to a hot shower.
Really, I have all of you to thank for it with my eternal gratitude and love.

The Green School Project has become part of the environmental education in our school. However,
As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first sight of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make a choice between "fight" or "flight" and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress is, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.
Ashrita Furman is a sportsman likes the challenge of breaking Guinness records. Over the last 25 years, he has broken approximately 93 Guinness records. More than 20 of these he still holds, (include) the record for having the most records. these records are not made in any conventional sport like swimming or soccer. Ashrita attempts (break) records in very imaginative events and in very(interest) places.
The motivation to keep (try) to break records comes through his (devote) to Sri Chimony, an India meditation teacher. Every time Ashrita tries to break record, he reaches a point where he feels he cannot (physical) do any more. At that moment, he goes deep within himself and (connect) with his soul and his teacher.
If you have to attend a party or other social events where a lot of people will be present, do you feel confident that you will make a good impression on others? Or do you feel shy? In any case, you should increase your confidence at social events.
Whenever you are meeting new people at any social event, you should wear proper clothes. Before you attend the event, make an effort to find out how other people will be dressing. If everyone else is wearing business clothes, you should, too. If the event is informal, you should wear informal clothes so that you fit in.
If you are going to meet people from a particular business or profession(职业), try looking through a few professional magazines or checking on the Internet ahead of time to get some conversation ideas which are related to their fields of interest. This can prevent you getting tongue-tied at the event.
When you are at the event, don't worry about whether or not the other person you are talking with likes you. Instead, try your best to find reasons to like them.
When you are making conversation with people, be sure to keep good eye contact, and make your facial expression soft. Nod to show you're listening. Let your face and body relax so that you can make natural gestures.
After the event is over, take a bit of time to do a little review of your social performance and the conversations you had with people. Tell yourself specifically what you did very well at the event. For example, perhaps you made a big effort to really listen to the people you were talking with, or you may have asked several people some good questions that really got them talking. By doing so, your conversation confidence will gradually improve.
Starting high school is a powerful experience for any teenager. Whether you are coming from a middle school(grades six through eight) or a junior high school (grades seven through nine), there are many things about high school that are different from your old school environment, and you will experience many changes.
You will face entering a new school, making new friends in an unfamiliar class, and getting to know new teachers. These new teachers will usually have higher academic(学术的) expectations than your middle-and junior-high school teachers. They want to help you get into college; in return, they expect you to work hard and improve your skills.
Although these are all big changes, they are nothing you cannot handle. There are many different resources available to help you deal with any problem. Your teachers, doctors, parents, and friends are there to help your transition(过渡) into this great new time in your life.
If you don't feel comfortable talking to any of these people, there are many help hotlines you can call to talk anonymously(不具名地). High school may be a time of change, but these changes should be for the better.
Your high school years are a great time in your life. You will gain new freedoms and have new experiences and new responsibilities. Many high school students get their driver's licenses when they turn 16 and gain a new type of independence.
However, other changes are less fun. To fully enjoy your high school experience, try to deal with the situations of your life with which you are not happy.
If you are feeling pressure to do something you feel wrong, talk to a friend or parent to find a solution. If you are not succeeding academically, find a teacher or someone to help you improve. If you feel isolated socially, try to join a school club or group to make new friends.
High school may seem rather difficult at first, but with time, you will come to appreciate everything about your experience.

Dear Dad and Mom,

I was raised in New York City where it's very cold every winter. In the sixth grade, a teacher offered (bring) some students to a homeless shelter after school. I went with my friends and the teacher for several weeks. , I continued to volunteer to help when they stopped going together. Because I was good sewing, I was told to help out with the sewing kit when any guests needed some repairs. Throughout high school I continued to come each week after school, setting up my sewing kit which (grow) larger and larger. I got to know the guests who came (regular).
Later on, I started sewing club with my friend and we taught (we) fellow students how to sew. We made heart-shaped pillows for sick (child) and the elderly. Every time it rained I would think about the umbrellas (design) before. In the future I hope to continue helping others as much as I can. It is the most important thing I (do) ever since.
Letter-writing seems to have nowadays.
