Planning Your Writing

Kelli Plasket is a reporter at TIME for Kids.

Question:How do you get story ideas?

Answer:I read newspapers, news sites and watch TV news daily. I look for stories or topics that would interest kids. I also talk to the people I meet about what's on their minds and what interests them. You never know where you will find a good story!

Suzanne Zimbler is a senior editor at TIME for Kids.

Question: How do you plan and organise a story?

Answer: Once I've learned everything that can be a topic, I decide what information is most important to include. I break down that information into different sections. Then I consider what order those sections should appear in. What do the readers need to know first in order to understand the rest of the story? How will I connect one section to the next? Sometimes, once I've drafted the story, I'll realise that another order works better than my original plan. That's OK. You can always switch paragraphs around and see how they read in a different order. It's part of the revision process.

Andrea Delbanco is a senior editor at TIME for Kids.

Question: How do you complete your writing assignments on time?

Answer: I love working with a deadline! I have a much easier time getting organised when I know that my time to work on an assignment is limited. First, I make a mental map of all of the stages: doing research, taking notes, writing a draft and revising. Then, I make a timeline of how long I think I will need to complete each part. I always hope to finish with enough time to take a break and then look at my writing with fresh eyes.

  1. (1) What does Kelli Plasket mean by saying the underlined sentence?
A . It is always difficult to find a good story. B . We can't miss any source to find a good story. C . Good stories are everywhere, but we can't catch them all. D . It is impossible to know where you'll find a good story.
  2. (2) What process will follow after Suzanne Zimbler has enough information about a topic?
A . To write a draft of the story. B . To break down information into different sections. C . To consider in what order those sections should appear. D . To decide what information is most important to include.
  3. (3) What will Suzanne Zimbler do if she finds her draft will be better in another order?
A . Turn to someone for help. B . Leave it there for a while. C . Change it and see which is better. D . Consider carefully before revising it.
  4. (4) From the text, we can know that Andrea Delbanco          .
A . finds it unpleasant to work with a deadline B . divides her time into equal parts among different stages C . knows exactly how long each stage will need to complete D . makes a careful plan of her time and tries to leave time for a break

Most drinks stating that they are fruit-flavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.

“Shoppers need to check the labels (标签) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be non-existent,” said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. “Food production is highly competitive. It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked.”

Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry-flavored products sold in stores. Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.

Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberry-flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.

Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. “Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading. Unfortunatly, it is also legal and widespread,” Tokelove said. “It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights.”

A. The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.

B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.

C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.

D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.

E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.

F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.

G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.

Last weekend's concert, organized and performing by the students of the Welsh Community College, was great success. The student had been practicing for months for the concert. They were excited that when they heard Gareth Jones was coming to present the prizes. Over 100 young performers play a mixture of jazz, classical or folk music. One of the highlights were 14-year-old Megan Evans, playing traditional Welsh folk songs. The concert ended with a very loud pop tune and anyone in the hall stood up and danced with the music. It was a magically atmosphere and a wonderful evening.
