Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
___36__ Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. ___37___
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
___38__ They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “___39___ Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. ___40___
A. Anger may cause you a cancer.
B. Do not express your anger while angry.
C. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
D. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.
E. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.
F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.
G. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.
As a young man,A1 was a skilled artist, a potter(陶艺工人)with a wife and two fine sons. One night, his elder son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal (肠道) disorder, neither A1 nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than A1 could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. In time Al became an alcoholic.
As the alcoholism progressed, A1 began to lose everything he possessed 一 his land, house etc. Finally A1 died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al's death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure!”
As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgment. I knew A1’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring and most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
I hadn’t heard Ernie talked much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly. "As a child until I left home at 18, A1 came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, "I love you, son."
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge A1 as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.

A. The feeling of guilty. B. His wife’s complaints.
C. His elder son’s illness. D. Ernie’s kindness.
31. What can you learn from the passage?
A. The writer was a relative of A1’s. B. The writer often went to help Al.
C. The writer misunderstood A1 at first. D. The writer thought badly of Al.
32. What is the best title of the story?

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops.
Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility. But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes "mindlessly" by taking down word for word what the professors said.
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers' report said, "While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."
In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

A. skillful B. mindless C. thoughtful D. tireless
22. The author of the passage aims to__________ .

C. explain the process of taking notes
D. promote the use of laptops
23. The passage is likely to appear in____________.
A. a science magazine B. a computer textbook

The second secret is __32__that happiness is a result of something else. The more obvious 33 are those pursuits that give our lives purpose—anything from studying insects to playing baseball. The more 34 we have, the more happiness we are 35 to experience.

Research shows that childhood friendships are important indicators of future success and social adjustment. Children’s relationships with peers (同龄人) strongly influence their success in school, and children with fewer friends are more at risk of dropping out of school, becoming depressed and other problems.
Making and Keeping Friends Is More than Child’s Play
When 6yearold Rachel returned to school on a recent Monday morning, her eyes immediately scanned the playground for her friend Abbie. “Though they were only separated by a weekend, the girls ran right into each other’s arms and hugged,” recalls Rachel’s mother Kathryn Willis of Gilbert. “It was like a scene from a movie.”
Most parents instinctively (本能地) know that having friends is good for their child. Experts agree that friendship is not simply child’s play, but a powerful predictor of social adjustment throughout life.
A Skill for Life
“Childhood friendships serve as a very important training ground for adulthood,” says Dr.Robbie AdlerTapia, psychologist with the Center for Children’s Health & Life Development at the East Valley Family Resource Center.
Researcher William Hartup states,“Peer relations contribute significantly to both social and cognitive (认知的) development.” Hartup concludes that the single best childhood predictor of adult social adaptation is not school grades or classroom behavior, but rather, how well a child gets along with other children.
The work of Arizona State University professor of Developmental Psychology Gary Ladd proves that being able to make and keep friends is beneficial to kids while the lack of friends is detrimental.
Good Friendships Don’t Just Happen
Experts agree that it is essential for children to establish highquality friendships. But,researchers warn, these friendships don’t necessarily just happen. Often,a good friendship begins with involved parents.
Psychologist Dr.Lynne Kenney Markan believes kids should be taught social skills in much the same way they are taught math and reading.
Bad Company
Many parents worry about the quality as well as the quantity of their child’s friendships. “When she was in 1st grade, her supposed ‘best friend’ began calling her names and threatening to hurt her,” says Mindy Miller. “My daughter wasn’t allowed to talk to or even look at other girls in her class. It really crushed her spirit. I told my daughter she didn’t need a ‘friend’ like that.”
“I’ll bend over backwards(拼命) to help my son get together with a friend I think is good for him,” AdlerTapia says. “I don’t look at it as manipulation (操纵),just positive parental involvement.”
32. The example of Rachel and Abbie is used to indicate that________.
A. childhood friendship is of great significance to their growth
B. a positive friendship helps children solve emotional and physical problems
C. it is a proven fact that peer friendship is the most rewarding experience throughout life
D. Rachel missed her friend Abbie very much because of their separation of one weekend
33.The underlined word “detrimental” could be replaced by________.
A. aggressive B. disappointing C. ridiculous D. harmful
34.We can learn from the passage that highquality friendship most probably results from______.
A. social skills and good study habits B. school grades and classroom behaviors
C. academic success and social adaptation D. positive parental involvement and social skills
35. From the last paragraph we can conclude that Dr.Robbie AdlerTapia agrees that________.
A. parents should regard making friends as something that just happens
B. it’s wise for parents to support and encourage healthy peer relationships
C. parents only need to help their children to cope with difficult social situations
D. parents are supposed to encourage their children to make as many friends as they can

Dear Tom,
I’m looking forward to your early reply.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you" - two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

My husband and I were paying a visit 61 my parents in Tucson. We went to a fast-food restaurant for dinner together. My husband went to the counter 62 (order )dishes and I stood with my parents.
My dad is 90 years old. He can hardly see very well and walks with a stick. I was scanning the restaurant, 63 (wait) to sit at the first table that was 64 (convenient)than others. A woman who was sitting with her son made eye contact with me and asked me to come to her. With a 65 (puzzle) look on my face, I pointed to myself and said , “Me ?” She 66 (nod) and said , “ Yes, you.” I walked to the table and she said , “ Bring your family here. I can finish eating at the counter. My son is in 67 hurry to leave anyway.” My eyes 68 (fill)with tears as she wiped down the table and guided my dad to the seat.
I always believe that there are 69 (nature) kind people in this world. This woman has set a good example to her son, 70 is a really lucky guy.
Some of the world’s most significant problems never hit headlines. One example comes from agriculture. Food riots (暴动)and hunger make news. But the trend lying behind these matters is rarely talked about. This is the decrease in the growth in production of some of the world’s major crops. A new study by the University of Minnesota and McGill University in Montreal looks at where, and how far, this decline is occurring.
The authors take a vast number of data points for the four most important crops: rice, wheat, corn and soyabeans. They find that on between 24% and 39% of all harvested areas, the improvement in production that took place before the 1980s slowed down in the 1990s and 2000s.
There are two worrying features of the slowdown. One is that it has been particularly sharp in the world’s most populous countries, India and China. Their ability to feed themselves has been an important source of relative stability both within the countries and on world food markets. That self-sufficiency (自给自足) cannot be taken for granted if productions continue to slow down.
Second, production growth has been lower in wheat and rice than in corn and soyabeans. This is problematic because wheat and rice are more important as foods, accounting for around half of all calories consumed. Corn and soyabeans are more important as feed grains. The authors note that “we have preferentially focused our crop improvement efforts on feeding animals and cars rather than on crops that feed people and are the basis of food security in much of the world.”
The report also states the more optimistic findings of another new paper which suggests that the world will not have to dig up a lot more land for farming in order to feed 9 billion people in 2050, as the Food and Agriculture Organisation has argued.
Instead, it says, thanks to slowing population growth, land currently ploughed(犁)up for crops might be able to revert (回返) to forest or wilderness. This could happen. The trouble is that the prediction assumes continued improvements in productions, which may not actually happen.
66. What significant problem does the writer think we should pay more attention to?
A. The decline of the grain production growth B. News headlines in the leading media.
C. Food riots and hunger. D. The food supply in populous countries.
67. Why does the author mention India and China in particular?
A. Their big populations are causing worldwide concerns.
B. Their food yields have begun to decrease sharply in recent years.
C. Their self-sufficiency is vital to the stability of world food markets.
D. Their food self-sufficiency has been taken for granted.
68. What does the new study by the two universities say about recent crop improvement efforts?
A. They fail to produce the same remarkable results as before the 1980s.
B. They contribute a lot to the improvement of human food production.
C. They play a major role in guaranteeing the food security of the world.
D. They focus more on the increase of animal feed than human food grains.
69. What does the Food and Agriculture Organisation say about world food production in the
coming decades?
A. The growing population will greatly increase the pressure on world food supplies.
B. The optimistic prediction about food production should be viewed with caution.
C. The slowdown of the growth in yields of major food crops will be reversed.
D. The world will be able to feed its population without expanding the area of farmland.
70. How does the author view the argument of the Food and Agriculture Organisation?
A. It is built on the findings of a new study. B. It is based on a doubtful assumption.
C. It is backed by strong evidence. D. It is open to further discussion.
According to a study conducted in 2010, about 39% companies blocked employees access to Facebook. They think some employees spend their entire day sitting glued to Facebook, up dating and commenting, which has a negative effect on their work. However, their banning isn’t widely accepted. Some reasons are listed why employees should be allowed access to Facebook.
First, they think it’s essential to take a break after working for hours. Employees may beworking hard to find a particular solution, but cannot come up with anything. Browsing(浏览)through Facebook can help them get inspired to find solutions in a different way and be successfulat it.
Blocking access to Facebook means that the employer doesn’t trust the employees. People are dissatisfied with the company if they’re not allowed access to Facebook. In order to keep people productive, it’s essential that they are kept happy. Therefore, allowing access to Facebook means that the employees are given a certain amount of freedom and bear responsibility for their actions.
Today many companies have pages on Facebook which they use for spreading news and something about products. If Facebook pages are blocked in an office, how will employees like or share something from the company page? Employees can also interact with each other through Facebook. It creates a sense of bonding and they get along well with each other. Keeping in touch through Facebook helps in strengthening their relations.
As far as I’m concerned, whether an organization should ban Facebook depends largely onfactors like its culture, type of work, Internet policy, business goals, etc. As far as the employees are concerned, most of them will be in support of allowing access to Facebook. With the advantages, there are potential disadvantages and the organization should always give preference to the option which will work in its best interest.
33. What does the author want to say in Paragraph 3?
A. Allowing access to Facebook is helpful in building trust.
B. Employees are not happy without access to Facebook.
C. Blocking access to Facebook disables employees.
D. More freedom should be given to employees.
34. What use do many companies make of Facebook?
A. Communicating with other companies.
B. Selling their products online.
C. Promoting their reputation.
D. Strengthening employees’ relations.
35. What advice does the author give to those who ban Facebook?
A. Making Internet policy. B. Developing their culture.
C. Having a business goal. D. Considering many factors.
Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to 21 .
I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph 22 we realized we were 23 .Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand new $20 bill. I was so 24 because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on 25 seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line. 26 I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About half way through the meal, I 27 I had not actually handed any money to the cashier. I had just 28 out, and nobody had noticed, I felt terrible.
My conscience( 良心) opened its mouth and swallowed me in one big bite. I couldn’t 29 over it. I just couldn’t go back to the cashier and 30 for my stolen pizza. I was so upset that I 31 to give myself the pleasure of an icecream for 32 that someone would say, “ Hey, Jeff, why don’t you use the change 33 the pizza instead of that nice, new $20 bill?” I was not so 34 of my cash now.
For the next two years, whenever I was 35 of the “pizza incident”, I would say to myself, “ Don’t think about it...”
I have learned two things from this 36 . Maybe I was a fool for 37 in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a 38 pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience 39 up with you.
This reflect the saying, “ A coward(懦夫) dies a thousand deaths; a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “ 40 ” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.
