I often quarrel about my mother over whether I can watch TV after school, She holds view that senior students have to make fully use of every minute to work hard at their lessons. It seems to me that once I am allowed to do that, I’ll be able to control myself and forget all about my study. She also thinks it is bad for my eye. But I really can’t accept her ideas. In my opinion, watch TV can set my mind at rest after a day’s hard works. Besides, it is important for us to know what had happened at home and at aboard. Thus, we shouldn’t be forbidden watch TV.

I remembered sitting in my doctor’s office,  55 , “why me?” James and I had been married for just two years and  56  this illness was testing both of us, and testing our marriage as well. It all seemed so  57 . Just then, my doctor said, “No one  58  you anything. You are not owed a perfect, healthy life. American parents generally can choose any name they want for their children. They may choose a name because it honors a family member. Or they may choose a name just because they like it.

A website called Baby Center lists some unusual names given to American babies born last year. Some were named for characters in old stories, such as Hero, Thor and Ulysses. Other people named their babies after kinds of food, like actress Gwyneth Paltrow. She named her daughter Apple. Other people named their babies Banana, Pumpkin and Cookie.

Still some babies were named for places. These included Brazil, India and Rome. Some parents used names of famous people from history such as Newton and Hannibal. Other parents named their babies after flowers or the weather. These babies were named Buttercup, Iris, Sunshine and Thunder.

Recording artists and movie actors influence some parents’ choices of names. Babies were named Beyonce, Charlize, Reda, Pierce, Shajira and Whitney. Movie actors themselves often give their babies unusual names. For example, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt named their baby daughter Shiloh. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes named their little girl Suri.

Some American parents do not want unusual names. They want their baby’s name to honor their religious faith. Such names include Abraham for boys or Sarah for girls. And many people give their babies the same name as a family member or good friend.

Like most fathers, Rick Conklin worries about his three children and fears failing them.

The 47-year-old West Scranton, Pennsylvania resident juggles (兼顾) the doctors appointments, dance recitals, track meets and concerts. He wants to find the right balance between giving the children structure and space. He worries about them dating and making the same mistakes he made in his youth.

Unlike most fathers, Mr Conklin has to do it alone and joins the growing ranks of single dads who are celebrating Father’s Day today.

According to the US Census, 6,292 single fathers lived in the seven-county region of Northeast Pennsylvania in 2000. By 2011, the number of men classified as “male household, no wife present” with children grew to 7,840 ---- 24.6 percent increase.

That rate slightly outpaces the increase in single mothers, although there are still significantly more single moms than single dads. The most recent US Census data shows Northeast Pennsylvania has 22,948 single mothers, a 22.8 percent increase from 17,705 in 2000.

Mr Conklin spoke of the struggles and rewards of being a single parent to 15-year-old Breonna, 13-year-old Mercadeze and 11-year-old Rickey Jr.

“It’s what makes it 10 times harder doing this, that I’m the only adult in the house,” Mr. Conklin said. “There isn’t that partner to take half of that frustration load or half of the arguments that the kids go through and the wars that go on.... There’s just me.”

Mr Conklin knows he is not perfect and strives to improve. He said he tries to research ways to be a good single parent through books and the Internet, and has taken family-strengthening classes with his children.

Although Mr Conklin sometimes finds being a father a thankless job, Breonna said she thinks he’s “doing a really good job on his own”.

He may be a little “strict”, Breonna said, but he is also “energetic”. She said her father cooks and cleans every day and is always trying to get his daughters involved with activities, through which Breonna said she has learned quite a bit about herself.

32. We can learn from the passage that Mr Conklin ______.

   A. has clear plans for each of his children

   C. has great expectations for his children

   D. receives little gratitude and understanding from his children

   D. various sources are available for single fathers to improve family relations

34. The underlined word “this” in paragraph 7 refers to ______.

   A. teaching the kids to get along well

   B. finding someone to listen to your worries

   C. taking care of three children altogether

   D. hiring someone to do the housework

 35. Which would be the best title for the passage?

“Do you have any idea how hard it is to be a kid?” My 7-year-old daughter once asked me. My initial reaction to her complaint was eye-rolling, along with thinking, “Being a kid is hard? Are you kidding me?” as I mentally ticked off all the hard things that her mama does.

However, as I thought about it a bit more, I realized how silly my reaction had been. Yes, as we adults look back on our childhood, being a kid seems carefree and easy and full of fun. Coloring at school! Playing games! Riding bikes! How could that be hard? So I asked my daughter why being a kid was so hard.

Her first answer didn’t surprise me. “Well, because you don’t have your own phone, and you can’t eat in the living room.”

I asked if anything else was hard about being a kid. “Someone else is the boss of you,” she replied.

I thought some more. What else is hard about being a kid? Well, sometimes, we don’t really take kids seriously.

There are times when I’ve responded to my children’s tears with “It’s not that bad,” or “You don’t need to be upset about that.” Because I believe that a cancelled playdate or a lost toy is no big deal. But for little ones, it is.

We don’t intentionally ignore these opportunities for connection, but sometimes, in busy moments of parenting, we respond unskillfully. We don’t take our children’s view, and we miss an opportunity to practice compassion(同情心).

21.  What was the author’s attitude toward “being a kid is hard” in the first place?

     A. Dissatisfied.        B. Disapproving.       C. Curious.               D. Cautious.

     B. share their life societies with their children

     C. give more attention to their children

     D. balance time spent on work and with the family

In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as terrible as my job in an apple factory. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were bad.

First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice. I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.

I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid the lowest wage of that time—two dollars an hour. Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible. I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $ 100 a week.

But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions. During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.

I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked. By the time I left, I was determined never to go back there again.

28. Why did the writer have to take many jobs at that time?

One moment it was quiet and calm in the forest, the next, the air was charged with tension(紧张). The elephant had heard the distant alarm calls of animals and her mood suddenly changed. I urged the elephant deeper into the forest. We sounded like a forest fire-crackling, snapping, trailblazing. But through all the noise came a sharp warning cry. The elephant stopped and we heard it again—the tell-tale call of a spotted deer.

I looked quickly around the shadows of the forest. Rays of sunlight shone through tree branches, beneath which the patchwork (交错) of green plants and shadow-within-shadows would make tiger stripes (条纹) look more attractive. Apart from an occasional noise from the elephant's stomach, the forest was silent.

Gradually, the tension slipped from our bodies. The elephant seized a nearby branch and put it into her mouth. I reached forward and gently moved my hand over the elephant's neck; there was a soft part, free of wrinkles and hairs, behind her ear.

This was my fourth time to sense the aura of the forest in Corbett, although I saw no tigers in the end. Located at the foot of the Himalayan mountains, Corbett is home to about 135 Bengal tigers, but the forest seemed to be guarding their whereabouts( 出没处), a silent reminder of their secrecy(隐蔽) and rarity(罕见). Still, I was happy enough touching the elephant behind the ear. If I had so desperately wanted to see a tiger, I could have gone to a zoo. After all, spotting tigers merely confirms their beauty; tracking them can make you aware of something more.

28. Which of the following was a clear signal of alarm?

   A. The elephant stopped.                                   B. A spotted deer called.

   C. The elephant seized a branch.                     D. The forest was silent for a while.

29. The author begins his account of the tour in the forest mainly by_______.

   A. describing various sounds                           B. comparing different animals

   C. listing different activities                         D. introducing various plants

30. What does the underlined part "to sense the aura" most probably mean?

   A. To see the diversity.                                 B. To enjoy the scenery.

   C. To feel the atmosphere.                                 D. To experience the freedom.

31. How does the author feel after several visits to Corbett?

   A. Seeing a Bengal tiger is quite thrilling.

   B. It is very time-consuming to travel in Corbett.

   C. It is really worthwhile to study the animals in Corbett.

   D. The process of finding Bengal tigers is most appealing.

Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that theres always a temptation(诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to go against the temptation.

Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science uncovered about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t?

To answer these questions, Brooks studies a wide range of disciplines(学科). Considering this, you might expect the book to be a simple description of facts. But Brooks has formed his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.

On the whole, Brooks’ story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’ attempt to translate his tale into science.

32.The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to__________.

A. explain where science can be applied

B. show the value of Brooks’ new book

C. remind the reader of the importance of science

D. explain why many writers use science in their works

33.According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?

A. Its strong basis.             B. Its clear writing.

C. Its convincing points.            D. Its memorable characters.

34.What is the author’s general attitude towards the book?

A. Contradictory.                B. Supportive.

C . Cautious.                    D. Critical.

35.What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph?

A. Death of the characters.      B. Brooks’ life experience.

C. Problems with the book.       D. Brooks’ translation skills.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true . There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around . For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.

It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.

Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture , I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and  started home.

My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的) . To be safe , I stayed with a ”pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit . So I took the ride carefully.

Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.

I finally made it home . The feeling on the bicycle was amazing . The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

28According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?

ABecause they are traditional and safe

BBecause they are colorful and available

CBecause they are convenient and inexpensive

DBecause they are fast and environment friendly

29The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ______________

Ato ride it for fun  B to experience local skills

Cto use it for transport Dto improve his riding skills

30How did the author feel about his street crossing?

31Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience?

AThe author enjoyed showing off his biking skills

B The author took great pleasure in biking

CThe author was praised by the other bikers

DThe author was annoyed by the air while riding
