She walked around the room with her nose in the air, pretending I didn’t ______.

A. live  B. exist    C. survive       D. breathe

A few days ago my family and I were out for an evening walk. As we headed home, dark  41   started rolling in and we knew we probably wouldn’t make it back without getting wet.  42   enough, the rain started falling just as we  43   our neighborhood. We all  44  down the street and into the house but when we got there I noticed that one of my sons was   45  . I went back out in the rain and found him   46   in an irregular pattern in front of the house. His face was one of  47   as he seemed to be going in circles. This is my child that usually hates getting  48  .

I shouted to him, “What are you doing?!!”

“I hate getting wet!” he  49   back.

“Then why are you running around in the  50   ? Hurry inside!”

“I’m trying to but I have to  51   the rain drops!”

He was getting more wet than any of the rest of us  52   he was trying to avoid the raindrops. As I went and put him  53   my arm and walked him inside, I realized that there is a good  54   in this story.

How often do you  55   life “avoiding the raindrops”? How often do you get so worried about the little  56  that might happen, the failures that you miss out on the great  57   that you could be having? We can spend all of our time running around in circles trying not to fail or we can accept that failure is going to come and  58   forward anyway. Any happy and successful person will tell you that the road to success is  59   with failures.

But every time you fail, you learn. Every time you learn, you improve. The more you improve, the more 60   you will be.

Albert Einstein has a great effect on science and history. An American university president once said that Einstein had made a new outlook—a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so onbut even ordinary men now understand that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.

By 1914 young Einstein had been worldfamous. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few dutieslittle teaching and unlimited chances for studybut soon his peace and quiet life were broken by World War I.

Einstein hated fighting and killing. The great suffering of the war affected him deeplyand he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work. In the years following World War Ihonours were increasingly put on him. He became head of the Kaiser Whihem Institute of Theoretical Physics. But he himself refused the effort to put him in a position far above other people. He was well known for his humble (谦逊的)  manners. He often said that his success would certainly have been achieved by others if he had never lived. In 1921 he won the Nobel Prizeand he was honoured in Germany until the rise of Nazism when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.

29The main idea of the first paragraph is________.

Athe difficulty of Einstein's thought to others

Bthe feeling of an American university president towards Einstein

Cthe difference between science and history

Dthe change in human thought produced by Einstein

30From the second paragraphwe know Albert Einstein________.

Aenjoyed world popularity                   Bbecame head of a school

Cwas popular with his students                Denjoyed studying wars

31Which of the following statements about Einstein is TRUE?

AHe achieved more than other scientists in history.

BOur ideas about the universe differ from one another because of him.

CHe kept working until peace came in 1918.

DHis research practically stopped during World War I.

32In the years following World War I________.

AEinstein's theory was soon accepted even by ordinary people

Bmore and more honours went to Einstein

CEinstein almost had no chances for his research

DEinstein was not honoured in Germany until the rise of Nazism

Life can be hard sometimes but it is you yourself who decide what kind of life you live. Born in 1949, Diana Nyad took an early interest in swimming as a sport and was a Florida State High School swimming champion. Like many young    21    , she had Olympic dreams,    22    a serious illness kept her from competing in the Games. The    23    didn’t stop her from going forward.  24   , she became interested in marathon swimming. A brilliant athlete, she was well-conditioned for spending    25    periods of time in the water. As a long-distance swimmer, she would compete    26    herself and the obstacles(障碍)   27    by distance, danger, cold, and exhaustion.

After battling the water for two days, she had to    34    for the sake of her own health and      35   . Even so, she impressed the world with her courage and strong desire to   36   . It did not    38     that her swim wasn’t completed; she believed she had touched the other shore.

When Nyad ended her    39   as a swimmer, she continued to try new thingstravelling the world as a reporter, writing books and giving public speeches about her life. Diana Nyad works to    40    others, just as she did when she swam the waters of the world.

概要写作Many of us do the revision work alone by shutting ourselves in a room with a book. Shutting yourself away can make you learn to hate studying. This leads to a situation where instead of being able to pay attention to your work, you are troubled by how unfair it is that you must study. When you hate your work, it’s very difficult to make yourself like and do the work. This can be part of a vicious cycle(恶性循环) that you are caught in an ineffective revision, your poor progress makes you dislike the revision work more.

Just being around other people really helps fight against feelings of loneliness and, thankfully, it’s perfectly possible to work with a partner. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions(使人分心的事物).

It’s not necessary to avoid all people around, just people having nothing do. Studying in the same room with someone who is ironing(熨烫衣服) or working out is perfectly possible. People who are bored and has nothing to do, however, are terrible to work around. They often try to keep others in conversation.

It’s also a good idea to avoid the company(陪伴) of people involved in activities that you like doing very much. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is much more likely to end with a new high score in the game than a few hours of high quality revision.

If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can keep out even noisy children.

When you’re studying for a big exam, it seems like your whole life is taken up with study. Friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation(孤立). And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time be with other people..

Many countries follow special customs when a child’s baby teeth fall out. Many of these customs tell stories about animals taking the teeth.

For example, Koreans have the custom of throwing the fallen tooth onto the roof of a house so that a magpie (喜鹊) can take the tooth away and bring a new tooth for the child. This custom is also followed by some other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam.

Other countries, though, have tooth customs about other animals. In Mexico and Spain, for example, it is thought that a mouse takes a fallen tooth away and leaves some money. But in Mongolia, it is dogs that take children’s teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture. It is believed that the new tooth will grow strong if the baby tooth is fed to a dog, so parents in Mongolia will put their children’s fallen teeth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.

In France and the USA, a child will put a fallen tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed. It is thought that in the early morning, when the child is still sleeping, the Tooth Fairy will take the tooth away and leave something else under the pillow. What she will leave is hard to know. It is said that in France the Tooth Fairy may leave some candies; however, in the United States, she may leave money.

21Koreans throw a tooth onto the roof of a house in order to __________.

A. get money        B. feed magpies

C. get candies       D. get a new tooth

A. throw it onto the roof of a house

B. feed it to a mouse

C. put it in a piece of meat and feed the meat to a dog

D. leave it to the Tooth Fairy

23From the last paragraph, we can know that in France and the USA _________.

A. a child will put his or her fallen tooth beside the pillow

B. the Tooth Fairy takes the fallen teeth away at midnight

C. the Tooth Fairy will leave some candies to the children after taking the fallen teeth away

D. no one knows for sure what the Tooth Fairy will leave to the children after taking the fallen teeth away

24The passage is mainly about ___________.

A. customs about fallen teeth in western countries

B. customs about fallen teeth in different countries

C. stories about human teeth

D. stories about some animals

Last winter vacation, some of my classmate decided to travel with their friends, while I choose to take part-time job to gain experience and earn some money. I learned from my teacher that a nearby company was looking after students with good handwriting to write address on envelope. The pay were 10 cent per envelope. I headed for the company, feeling sure I would easy finish 300 envelopes in five hours and to earn the money. Actually, I only finished 200. Now, I fully understand how hard is to earn money. Getting out of the classroom is indeed necessary for we all.

“Which college are you going to?” Many high school students are often asked this question. For some, the answer is Harvard, Stanford, Princeton or another famous university. For others, it might be State U, a small liberal art college or even a community college. Whether high school students’ answer is a private top college or a large public university, it should be their best-fit choice.

Admission rates to some of the country’s top university have been dropping for years now, with many admitting less than 10 percent of applicants. This makes these colleges all the more desirable to some applicants because they think being admitted to one of these highly selective colleges guarantees success.

The truth is that name brand doesn’t make a college a good choice for you. Just ask one of the students who were admitted to all eight Ivy League colleges(常春藤名牌大学) this year. He turned them all down to attend the University of Alabama, which best met his financial and academic needs.

Just like anything else in life, when something is good fit, it works. Students that attend colleges that match their academic, social and financial needs, while still providing an academically challenging environment, are more likely to graduate on time. On the other hand, students who attend colleges that are not good fit are more likely to struggle, feel anxiety and stress, and fail to get out in four years. In fact, some of the colleges with the highest graduation rates aren’t in the Ivy League.

It’s good fit that leads to good outcomes—not the name of a school. Just look at some of the colleges with the highest starting salaries. Colleges like Montana Tech and Oregon Health and Science University are among the top 10 colleges with the highest early-career salaries--- with Stanford and the Ivy Leagues barely making the top 25.

My friend Henry, with who I studied in the same class, didn’t like studying at school. That’s because he couldn’t go to high school. He had to return back to his hometown, where his father wished him to learn to manage our small shop. However, the young man was not interesting in it and didn’t do as his father said. He spends a lot of time reading and he also learned how to repair cars. Last month, I received an e-mail from him inviting me take my vacation on his hometown. I started off.
