高二英语上学期上册试题

Have you ever thought about what will people die of 100 years later? It is not a simple question, if you have not been paying attention to the revolution in bio-technology. With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a much longer time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today’s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging, will just become history.

When it comes to technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond l20 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on — in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to replace of old ones.

It sounds exciting to get the idea that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future.

When I was growing up on a farm in Iowa, we didn't talk about money in my family.  My

parents valued teaching my brothers, sisters and me about saving, budgeting and earning

money, but conversations about our family's economic situation and financial decisions were

rare.  This was typical at the time - especially in the Midwest of the US, so to my friends and

me, money was enveloped in some level of secrecy. Later, when my family hit a difficult

time, we began having more open conversations about money. And while those talks were

very difficult at first, it was a relief to understand more about our family's finances.

Obviously, times haven't changed much when it comes to family money talks. Recent

research by an American institute indicates that money remains among the lowest priorities

(优先事项) in conversations between parents and their children. In fact, parents are much

more likely to have prioritized discussions about pretty much everything else before money.

They're also waiting to have these discussions until their kids are older - 10 0n average -

which can cause them to miss many opportunities during their children's formative years.

Talking about money with your kids can be difficult for many different reasons -

especially if your finances seem very personal and private, or if you have anxiety about bills

yourself. But discussing money in a calm and open way is pivotal to helping your children

learn about and become comfortable with finances before they're expected to manage their

own.  While you certainly don't need to provide detailed information about your income to your

children, it can be very effective to include them in meaningful financial discussions - even at

an early age. Having regular family conversations about money will help them learn about

financial concepts(概念) like saving and budgeting, develop financial decision-making skills

and form a healthy relationship with money.

32. When the author's family had a difficult time, she began to _        .

    A. learn how to earn and save money

    B.  understand the importance of saving

    C. tell her friends about her money problems

    D. know about her family's economic situation

    A. convinced children under lo should know about money

    B. still unwilling to talk about money with their children

    C. most worried about their children's health and safety

    D. getting to realize the importance of family money talks

34. The underlined word "pivotal" in the last paragraph can be replaced by____”.

    A. important    B.embarrassing    C.interesting    D.cruel

35. What is the writer's attitude to talking about money with children?

Wouldn’t you want to travel more often without breaking the bank? If you are interested, read on to find out how you can do simple things to save money next time you go on vacation.

Airfares

Plan in advance and visit discount websites to see if there are better deals. If you are planning to stay in two countries and an airline makes you change planes on those countries anyway, you might be in luck. Check pricing on the flights to see if you can stay a few days at the country of the flight change instead of changing planes right away since airlines often let you do that for the same price.

Accommodations

Sometimes the smaller towns close to where you are going have hotels that are much less expensive. If you don’t mind the 15-minute ride, you might just save a large amount of money. Home exchanges are pretty cool and popular especially in Europe. If you are of the adventure type, this could be exciting and refreshing. Sometimes smaller hotel chains are willing to give you free upgrades or even free nights. If you are staying at a destination for at least a few days, consider a vacation home instead of hotels. They are often more comfortable and your cost will probably be cheaper.

Eating

Figure out where you will be and eat before you actually go out. Avoid breakfast from the hotels because chances are good that the breakfast from the hotel is expensive and isn’t great. It probably pays to walk out the front door in the morning and find a local cafe. You might just discover the local favorite unexpectedly. Want a breakfast that costs nothing? Ask for some bread to-go at the restaurant the night before. In addition, fancy lunches are often much less expensive than dinners. If you eat a big lunch and a light dinner, it’s also healthier.

21. The text is mainly about ______.

   A. tips on economical travel                  B. trips in different countries

   C. dos and don’ts during a trip                     D. budgets for a package holiday

22. What kind of travelers will choose a vocation home?

   A. Those who want an adventure trip.

   B. Those who dislike small hotel chains.

   C. Those who don’t mind long-distance trips.

   D. Those who plan to live in one place for few days.

23. To save money on eating, you are expected to ______.

   A. eat more for dinner than lunch

   B. have three meals in the hotels

   C. buy bread from restaurants

   D. try a local cafe for breakfast

Lately, there is a rising trend in families choosing to homeschool their child than send their child to a traditional educational institution. Let’s look at some of the benefits of homeschooling.

1. Flexible Schedule

Homeschooling enables a flexible schedule. With homeschooling, your child can start homeschooling at 9 am or later depending on your preferred schedule. You can schedule your child’s homeschooling education as you see fit with materials or subjects that may be not available in a traditional school.

2. Individual Attention

With homeschooling, your child gets all the individual attention. For example, if your child is weak in maths, you could devote more time and energy to teaching maths. Your child’s homeschooling schedule can be adjusted for that. For example, if your child is better at science than at maths, simply devote more homeschooling hours to maths and cut back on science. With homeschooling, the choice is yours.

3. Family Activity

The schooling of the child can become an extended family activity. Examples are field trips and experiments. Plus, the child also receives more quality time with his/her parents.  3  The child is also free of any negative peer pressure or influences.

4.   4

With homeschooling, the child does not need to prove his/her abilities to other children. Parents are able to plan the learning program according to his strengths and weakness.

Parents can also change the curriculum to suit the learning style of the child.  5  Some children even learn better from experiencing or seeing things in action.

A. No peer pressure

B. Religion Learning

C. Traditional schools can’t do that.

D. There is more time for family bonding.

E. For example, the child needn’t wake up at 7 every morning.

F. Plus, it is quite impossible to provide individual attention to all students.

G. For example, some children learn better from reading while others need to write.

The oceans are unique to our planet. No other planet in our solar system has liquid water. The oceans cover about 70% of the earth's surface.  They contain about 97% of the earth's water supply. Life on earth originated in the seas. The oceans continue to be home to an incredible number of plants and animals.

We know very little about the oceans. Because they are so deep and dark, they are hard to study. But scientists are discovering new strange creatures all the time. We are learning more by using satellites to look at the oceans' surfaces and by using buoys (航标 ) to measure temperature and saltiness. Special vehicles can now travel deep into the dark oceans to see what mysteries can be discovered.

More of the sun's heat is assimilated by water along the equator than at the poles. This means the water at the equator is warmer than water at the poles. These different water temperatures cause the water in the oceans to move. This is called an ocean current.

The air above ocean currents also moves. The warm or cold ocean air moves over the land as wind. Oceans are also a really important part of the water cycle. Evaporation(蒸发) from oceans creates most of the world's rainfall. Plants on land need the rain to absorb nutrients from the soil.

The oceans are also home to all kinds of sea life. These include fish, whales, dolphins, octopi, lobsters, crabs and shrimps. There are also jellyfish and starfish. Many kinds of plants, such as plankton, kelp and sea grass are part of the "forest of the seafloor."

Carbon dioxide in-oxygen out! Oceans help to capture and store carbon dioxide(C02). They are the largest natural "carbon sinks" in the world. Oceans trap about1/4of the CO2 that humans put into the air. Oceans also release oxygen. Half of the world's oxygen is produced by these tiny plants!

Dear Olivia,

As I opened my eyes this morning, I realized that you will be starting a new school year at a new school today. As we rode the elevator down I thought of so many things I wanted to say to you . They are what I’ve already covered in the many conversation we’ve had, but as a mom I can’t help but feel the urge to repeat them in case you didn’t hear me the first time.

Floor 4: I know what it’s like to be a new kid. I understand the butterflies in your stomach ,but do believe in yourself. Try to make more friends.

Floor 3:Try not to look so nervous. Sometimes the simple act of smiling can be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. I believe a smile is worth at least that much.

Floor 2: If at any moment today you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, just breathe. You’ll be amazed how a couple of deep breaths can help you see things in a whole new light.

Floor 1: I wanted to tell you how my heart is torn between wanting to keep you at home with all day, where I can love you and protect you, and wanting you to go out there and have experiences  I can’t provide for you. Don’t grow up too fast,OK?

Ground: As we excited the building for our short walk to school, I took each of your hands in mine and said,”Just be yourself, and remember how much I love you. I’ll be waiting to hear all about your experiences this afternoon.”

I realized that’s really all you need to hear.

Love ,

Mom
