Yang Li, a five-year-old girl living next door to me, very clever. Because she is not old enough to go to the school, she often asks me to teach herself to read, write and draw. She studies hardly and soon she learns a lot. One evening last month I was doing my English homeworks when she came to my house. She asked me how I learned English. You would find English a bridge for so much knowledge, I said. She then wanted to learn English, either. She has learned many English words so far but her parents are very grateful to me.

I have many new teachers in high school, but Lori Runkle, my English Language and Composition teacher, is my favorite teacher.

Ms. Runkle enjoys getting to know more about students, so I have many chances to talk with her after class. I have always wanted to become a journalist (新闻记者). Since Ms. Runkle used to be a journalist back in the United States, she has introduced many helpful journalistic writing skills to me.

Although she is my teacher, Ms. Runkle and I are more like friends. She often invites my classmates and me to take part in different activities outside of school. For example, I went to listen to a journalist’s speech, which helped me better understand current events (时事).

Not only does Ms. Runkle talk with me outside of school, she is also a great teacher in the classroom. English Language and Composition is a really hard subject for a second language learner. We felt worried in the beginning, but Ms. Runkle really makes an effort to help us out. In class, Ms. Runkle always encourages students to question everything to keep us active. One part of class I love the most is when groups of students are required to give speeches on events that are happening in the world. It requires a lot of deep thinking and I really learn quite a lot from it.

I love Ms. Runkle very much. She not only helps me to get good scores, but also acts as a good friend and always gives me advice on life.

A. tells them how to get good scores

B. asks them questions about the world

C. asks them to describe current events

16. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?

B. To look back on her special high school life.

C. To describe an unforgettable teacher.

Britain's most popular lie has been disclosed, with one in four people admitting using “sorry I had no signal" when returning a missed mobile phone call, a survey found.

Researchers found the average Briton tells on average four lies every day or almost 1500 every year. Almost one in six men admitted they were most likely to lie to their wife or girlfriend, on average at least twice a day. The most popular lie was saying you had no mobile phone signal, with one in four people admitting regularly using the little white lie. It usually came after they hit the “ignore" button when their mobile rang.

Three quarters of people think women are better liars. The research found 46 per cent of girls have been caught lying, compared to 58 of men.

The second most common fib(无关紧要的谎言) is “I haven't got any cash on me” when asked for money by tramps (流浪者), beggars and Big Issue sellers. “Nothing's wrong – I'm fine” came third followed by “You look lovely” and “Nice to see you”.

Modern technology turned out to have contributed to many lies with “I didn't get your text” in 18th, “Our server was down” in 20th and “My battery died” in 26th place. Other lies to make the top ten included “I'll give you a ring”, “We're just good friends” and “We'll have to meet up soon”. “I'm on my way” and “No, your bum doesn't look big in that” completed the top ten.

Men tell the most fibs, coming out with five every day compared to women who lie just three times.

In many cases perhaps it is better to flatter with a fib than destroy someone with the truth, according to a spokesman for OnePoll, which carried out the research of 4,300 adults.

49. Whether the person being called has pushed the “ignore” button or ______, the caller at the other end hears the same tone.

A. there’re more women liars                  B. fewer women liars are found out

C. women tell less harmful lies                D. women are harder to convince

51. “You look lovely” and “I’m on my way” rank _____ on the popular-lie list.

A. 3rd and 8th             B. 5th and 10th          C. 4th and 9th         D. 5th and 12th

52. The OnePoll spokesman seems to think it’s ______ for the British to lie so much.

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars and trucks with gas. American won’t live without cars!

Most Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without cars. However, some have realized the serious problem of the air pollution that is caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.

One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.

To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean.

But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.

Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

A. One                      B. Two                        C. There                       D. Four

A. which is clean itself                              B. which does not pollute the air

C. Which is used to clean streets            D. which is easier to make

34. If the number of cars is cut down, the most serious problem to American workers is       .

A. to have no work to do                             C. to get a better life

B. to keep the air clean                            D. to go to work by bike

35. What is the conclusion of the writer?

A. Bicycling is the only way out.

B. The number of cars must be cut down.

C. Cars bring us nothing but serious problems.

D. Cars bring us not only a better life but serious problems.

There is no doubt whether setting a goal is very important. By set goals you are

taking control of your life. It is having a map to guide you to where you want to head.

With a clear direction, and with certain plans, you will straightly get what you want. On

the contrary, without the goal, you do not know where to go or what you want. Then your

life becomes dull or meaningless just like the dead water in a muddy lake.

We find that successful people were always those having and achieving their goal.

They set goals, short-term or long-run, to help realize our dreams. Therefore, from my

point of view, we should make clear what we really want it and follow our plans as many

winners do.

We were traveling to the Caribbean with our three kids aged 12, 7 and 4. Being from Chicago, we were all in need of a little sun and sand after an especially cold and long winter.

Before the trip, my eldest child asked if we could consider getting him a waterproof case for his iPhone. He thought it would be fun to take pictures and videos of his brother and sister underwater in the pool. That made sense to us, and we agreed that it could make great memory of good time. We bought the case for him.

Down to vacation we went with waterproof case. We performed the suggested water test, and into the pool he went. Pow! That was the end of the phone. Water immediately leaked (渗入) into it and the phone was never turned on again.

Now, this could be a post about what a poorly-designed product the case is, but in fact, that is not what I’m writing about.

Actually, what truly surprised us was what happened to our 12-year-old over the course of the next seven days of our vacation. Aside from the initial (最初的) five minutes after the phone died, our son never mentioned his phone again.

Instead of his usual plugged-in state, he spent much of the vacation reading books, playing silly games with his sister and brother and talking to us at dinner. Normally when we’re on vacation and he and his sister and brother are done with eating, he’ll leave the table to text friends or check sports scores. But with no phone, there was no pull to keep in touch with his friends or to look at the latest posts. Instead, our almost-13-year-old played tag with his 4-year-old sister, ran after chickens with his 7-year-old brother and entertained them with games while we finished our meals. At the end of the trip, when we asked him about the lack of phone, he admitted it was nice to have a break from the constant chatting and keeping in touch with friends.

I’m not saying I intentionally hope his phone dies again, but it does give us time to consider about whether or not we should make the kids leave their cell phones at home as part of the spring break contract. Or at least we should severely curtail phone usage on vacation.

28. Why did the author’s eldest son want a waterproof case for his iPhone?

A. To put his phone away.            B. To make his phone beautiful.

C. To limit his phone use.             D. To protect his phone underwater.

A. The change in his eldest son.        B. The function of the iPhone.
