“The Lord of the Rings”, one of the best sellers in the new millennium(千年), was made up of three parts——“The Fellowship of the Ring”, “Two Towers”, and “The Return of the King”.Millions upon millions of people have read it in over 25 different languages, but fewer know about the author and the history of the composition of the creative masterwork.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in South Africa in 1892.His parents died when he was a child.Living in England with his aunt, Tolkien and his cousins made up his mind to play languages, a hobby that led to Tolkien’s becoming skilled in Welsh, Greek, Gothic, Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon.
After graduating from Oxford, Tolkien served in World War I.In 1917, while recovering from trench fever, he began composing the mythology(神话) for The Rings. As a professor of Anglo-Saxon in 1930s at Oxford, Tolkien was part of an informal discussion group called the Inklings, which included several writers. The group was soon listening to chapters of Tolkien’s imaginative work “The Hobbit”.
Hobbit was a name Tolkien created for a local people that could best be described as half-sized members of the English rural(乡村的)class.Hobbits live in hillside holes. One of them, Bilbo Baggins, looks for treasures with a group of dwarves(侏儒).On the way, he meets the twisted, pitiful creature Gollum, from whom he sees a golden ring that makes the holder invisible.
One of Tolkien’s students persuaded her employer, publisher Allen & Unwin, to look at a draft(草稿).The chairman of the firm, Stanley Unwin, thought that the best judge for a children’s book would be his ten-year-old son.The boy earned a shilling for reporting back that the adventure was exciting, and “The Hobbit” was published in 1937.
It sold so well that Unwin asked for a continuation.Over a dozen years later, in 1954, Tolkien produced “The Lord of the Rings”, a series of books so creative that they hold readers—new and old —after their publication.

The first of the 2015 Nobel Prizes has been announced. Sweden’s Nobel Prize committee said the Nobel Prize for medicine would go to Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan for their discoveries about a therapy (疗法) against malaria (疟疾). The prize for medicine was also going to Chinese researcher Tu Youyou. Campbell and Omura were honored for their anti-roundworm treatment, while Tu came up with a new drug for malaria.
Tu, born in 1930, graduated from Beijing Medical College in 1955. She is a chief researcher and professor at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is also the first Chinese citizen to be awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine. In the 1970s, Tu carried out the research, resulting in the discovery of artemisinin (青蒿素), a drug that has considerably cut the number of malaria deaths and saved millions of lives. The treatment is based on a herb (草药) used in Chinese traditional medicine, which is called sweet wormwood.
Tu got the award for three “firsts”. She was the first to bring artemisinin to her project team, the first to extract (提炼) a form of artemisinin that can prevent malaria, and the first to complete a clinical trial.
“Tu’s winning the prize shows China’s prosperity (繁荣) and progress in scientific and technological field, marks a great contribution of traditional Chinese medicine to the cause of human health and shows China’s growing strength and rising international standing,” Premier Li Keqiang said in a congratulatory letter Monday morning.

Not long ago my daughter’s favorite shoes were cut with a knife. She cried. I took them to the shoemaker to get them 36 . He 41 , “As if the cuts were made on purpose for special style.” I didn’t fully understand him, 42 I decided to leave the shoes.
Two days later, I went to collect the shoes. At first 43 I found there were indeed more cuts on each shoe, but all of them were 44 with red thread around. The shoes looked more unique and interesting than ever. I couldn’t help but praise his 45 .
Another time, my wife’s white skirt had an opening. I 48 with praise, “It’s just as beautiful as a piece of art!”
“I got the 49 from that shoemaker. Patches (补丁) are supposed to be ugly, but a skillful person can make it look perfect.” replied my wife.
50 she said set me thinking: perfection is 51 to achieve in everything; patches are unavoidable(不可避免的), so is human’s life, which will appear 52 the form of injury, disability or disease. 53 you can’t change the existence of them, all you 54 do and have to do is to deal with the wound by patches and try your best to bloom(盛开)a most beautiful flower on the wound, and that is the meaning of 55 .

Dear Disney,
Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom - Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.
We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn’t take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff(员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, "Promise?" Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria’s new friend with "her" ice-cream.
Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won’t last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew’ what time we would get off the ride;
she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, "Thank you," but I’m sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!
Your fan,
Carmen Rivera

Today I went on a school trip. We visit the science museum and it was really interested. We got to there so fast by train. We saw some farms and village along the way. At the museum, I learned a lot about robots. I didn't know they could play chess about us. It was so cool! Then the guide taught us how make a model robot. I take a lot of great photos, too. after that, I went to the gift shop but bought some lovely gifts for my parents. They weren't expensive. All at all, it was an exciting day.
I had a lot of teachers that I loved. However, the teacher that I remember most was Mrs. Green from Marianna, Florida. She was my 5th grade teacher. Since I was a new student, not only in her class, but at the school, she made my time there much more pleasant. I immediately began to like her. She was really funny and I knew that she liked me. She made learning fun. I remember one day for Christmas holidays, she taught us how to make ornaments (装饰物) from eggs. My parents still have some of the ornaments I made.
She made me leader for many group projects and that made me feel special. I think that would make any child feel special, especially when a child is in a new place with no friends. She made me want to be like that. Not to pick a “favorite” student, but to make every student feel that they are special. That year, I received the Presidential Academic Award (美国总统学术奖). I was really proud and so were my parents.
Looking back at it, I think the reason why I did so well was that I felt important. Students do better when they feel like they are important or loved. Mrs. Green always gets to know her students and forms personal relationships with them, which I will try to do some day. I just hope that there will be students who find me to be their favorite teacher as I found her to be mine.

Just before September, Miller was struck by a car and lost his right arm. I went to see him after he came back from 44 . He looked very 45 , but he didn’t cry.
That season, I 46 all of Miller’s records while he 47 the home games from the bench. We went 10-1 and I was named most valuable player, 48 I often had crazy dreams in which I was to blame for Miller’s 49 .
One afternoon, I was crossing the field to go home and saw Miller 50 going over a fence—which wasn’t 51 to climb if you had both arms. I’m sure I was the last person in the world he wanted to accept 52 from. But even that challenge he accepted. I 53 him move slowly over the fence. When we were finally 54 on the other side, he said to me, “You know, I didn’t tell you this during the season, but you did 55 .Thank you for filling in for 56 .”
His words freed me from my bad 57 . I thought to myself, how even without an arm he was more of a leader. Damaged but not defeated, he was 58 ahead of me. I was right to have 59 him. From that day on,I grew 60 and a little more real.
