First Job Search Tips
Keep in mind that you may not get the first job you apply for, or the second. . . A job search can take time, especially if you don’t have much experience. Here’s how to ensure you’re an excellent candidate(求职者) for the jobs you are applying for.
Be Persistent. Wait a few days, then follow-up your application with a phone call to the hiring manager reiterating your interest. If you have applied in person, stop in again and mention that you are really interested in the opportunity.
Don’t Stop. Don’t apply at one place and wait for the phone to ring. Complete as many job applications as you can, and consider a variety of positions. 36
37 Applicants who are only available(空闲的) for limited hours are less likely to get hired than those who are flexible(灵活的) as to when they can work. For example, one candidate for a summer job told the employer that he was only available on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Compare that to another applicant who selected“any”on the Hours Available section of the job applicant and you can see why the second applicant got the job.
Use Your Connections. 38 Does your mom shop regularly at the store where you’d like to work? If so, have her mention that you’re looking for a job. That’s how I got my first job and how my brother got his first job at the drug store across the street.
Dress Appropriately. When applying for jobs, dress as though you had the job. If you’re applying for a retail position, for example, visit the store before you apply to see what the staff is wearing. 39 When in doubt, dress up, not down.
Don’t Give Up. Job searching isn’t easy, especially when you don’t have much experience or many skills. 40 Your first job will be a stepping stone to your next job—and to your future career.
A. Don’t stop to look for a job.
B. The more you apply, the better chance you have of finding a job.
C. Be Flexible.
D. It will give you an idea as to how you should dress.
E. You shouldn’t apply for different jobs at the same time.
F. If you have a connection, use it.
G. Keep trying and keep applying and you will find a job.
We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine( 常规), or clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on. 36 But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.
If you normally get up at 7:30 am, try getting up at 7:00 am. That half hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you've been planning to finish. 37
Once you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent(紧急的) ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important things rather than on all those little urgent ones.
38 The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won't miss the important ones.
3. Reduce Interruptions(干扰)
If colleagues ( 同事) have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple thing like writing a letter. Frequent interruptions don't just eat up time, they also break your concentration.
When you've got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemaill( 语 音 信 箱 ). 39
Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to start a conversation.
4. 40
A few minutes' chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day. When you're working, work. If your concentration is slipping, it is better for you to go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you're facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it's easier to deal with.
A.Stay Focused on Your Work
B.Take Breaks When Necessary C.If you have an office door, close it.
D.If you work like this, you'll usually save time.
E.Would you want me to make your day longer? F.I can't magically make all your days 25 hours long.
G.Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start.
The food we eat seems to have far-reaching effects on our health. Although science has made great steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to e
at. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to diet as well, especially cancer of the colon(结肠). Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that carcinogenic nitrates, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives(添加剂), caused cancer. Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed(经过加工的)food are helpful or harmful. The additives, which we eat, are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin(青酶素) to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found
in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes, similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial(财政的) reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration has tried repeatedly to control these behaviors, the practices continue.

These women want to prevent further tragedies(悲剧).They have worked to encourage the government to limit the youngest drinking age.Students have formed a similar organization,SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) and are spreading the same message among their friends.
