During my first day at senior high school, I met my new teacher. She looked at me and said, “I am happy to have an international student in my class.” I was very excited.
One day, I came to the class about three minutes late, and she told me to write my name on a piece of paper and, beside it, the word “late”. In that way she could know I was late for the first time. At first, I was embarrassed and angry. Then I did not complain because she taught me an important lesson: time is very valuable.
I learned another important lesson during one of my classes — the day of the first exam. After I finished my exam, I did not review my answers because it was the end of the exam time. One week later, she returned my exam paper. I found that one of my answers was wrong. Even though the only choices were A, B and C, I chose D instead of C. I tried to explain my mistake to her, “I marked D though I knew C was the right answer.” However, she refused my request and told me, “I do believe you, but I am not going to forgive your mistake. This will encourage you to be more careful before you turn your papers in.” I was not expecting that from her, but she was completely right.

With Teachers’ Day draw near, I would like to express my thanks to Ms. Li, who taught my English last year.
At that time, I was having a trouble studying English and my scores fell. Ms. Li encouraged me and tell me her story that she never gave up before her studies didn’t go well. She also said that it was necessary to make efforts so that I would not regret waste time. Her words were the best medicine because she stood in her shoes to deal with problems and gave me helpful advices. She didn’t simple comfort me. Her teaching methods also worked. As they migrate(迁移),butterflies and moths(飞蛾)choose the winds they want to fly with, and they change their body positions if they start floating in the wrong direction. This new finding suggests that insects may employ some of the same methods that birds use for traveling long distances. Scientists have long thought that insects were simply at the mercy of the wind.
Fascinating as their skills of flight are, migrating behavior has been difficult to study in insects because many long distant trips happen thousands of feet above ground. Only recently have scientists developed technologies that can detect such little creatures at such great heights.
To their surprise, though, the insects weren’t passive but active travelers on the winds. In autumn, for example, most light winds blew from the east, but the insects somehow sought out ones that carried them south and they positioned themselves to navigate(导航) directly to their wintering homes.
Even in the spring, when most winds flowed northward, the insects didn’t always go with the flow.If breezes weren’t blowing in the exact direction they wanted to go,the insects changed their body positions to compensate(抵消).Many migrating birds do the same thing.
The study also found, butterflies and moths actively flew within the air streams that pushed them along.By adding flight speeds to wind speeds, the scientists calculated that butterflies and moths can travel as fast as 100 kilometers an hour. The findings may have real-world applications.
With climate warming, migrating insects are growing in number.Knowing how and when these pests move could help when farmers decide when to spray their crops.
32.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Insects migrate with the seasons.
B.Wind helps insects greatly in migrating.
C.insects have real direction.
D.Scientists have trouble in observing insects.

D. insects positioned themselves in the winds
34.We can learn from the text that_______________
A. insects fly in the way birds do
B. insects travel more easily in autumn
C. insects never position themselves when flying low
D. insects rest a lot when the wind pushes them along
35.According to the passage,the findings can_______________ .
A. increase insects in number B.instruct farmers when to spray
C.prevent climate warming D.help protect insects
Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new material that can move
heat out of buildings and into space. The researchers say the material can cool buildings
even on hot days. The cooling material is a very thin sheet with many layers that could
be placed on a roof like solar panels(板). However, instead of turning sunlight into energy
as solar panels do, the material turns heat into radiation.
Shanhui Fan is an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University. He says
that the panels have a layer of material that is like sand. The panels act like a mirror.
They take heat out of buildings and reflect the light from the sun. And he says both the
heat and sunlight are sent 100 kilometers into outer space. "It's a structure(构造) that
cools itself without electricity input, even under the sun. So, what it does is basically
radiate heat to outer space and also reflect the sunlight so it doesn't get heated up by the sun. Mr. Fan says it is like having a window into space. The heat is sent directly into space without warming the air.”
He says buildings in developing countries that do not have electricity or air conditioning could use the panels. "In areas where electricity is out of reach for many people, there is a potential (潜在的) benefit for storing medicine or even food. In many of these situations, being able to reduce the temperature is important. And this would provide a way to do it.”
The researchers say the main problem is creating actual cooling systems using the high-tech panels. They say it may be possible to develop a cooling spray(喷涂) that could be used on present solid structures. They believe the cooling spray technology could be developed in the next three to five years. They say as much as 15 percent of the energy used in the United States is spent providing power to air conditioning systems.
27.The first paragraph mainly tells us ________.

29.The new material is especially useful in areas that ________.

The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his bunches of bananas and bags of peanuts. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life. “Bananas 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira.” He said in a low voice. I bargained him down to 200 for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill. He didn’t have change. So I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.
When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it’s not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.
I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready. I waved them away. “What’s up?” asked him. “I…I don’t have money to buy books for school.” I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills. “Will this help?” I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year. “Thank you, sir.” he said. “Thank you very much!”
When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for schoolbooks. What if he’s a cheat? And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using him? I didn’t know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.
Over the next six months, I was busy working in a news agency in northern Nigeria. Sometime after I returned, I went out for a drive. When I was about to pull over, the boy suddenly appeared by my window with a big smile ready on his face.
“Oh, gosh! Long time.”
“Are you in school now?” I asked.
He nodded.
“That’s good,” I said. A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted. “Here,” I held out a 500 naira bill. “Take this.” He shook his head and stepped back as if hurt. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “It’s a gift.”
He shook his head again and brought his hand from behind his back. His face shone with sweat. He dropped a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts in the front seat before he said, “I’ve been waiting to give these to you.”
