Many American presidents in the 19th century were born in poor families. They spent their childhood in little wooden rooms. They got little education (教育). When I was in junior high school, I was really a bad boy. My history teacher — Mr Oven criticized me a lot because I was naughty in his class. By the end of the first semester, I’d had enough of his words and had decided that I would get my revenge on him.

The opportunity arose one morning when Mr. Oven was called to the office for a certain reason. While Mr. Oven left, my company Billy and I grabbed Mr. Oven’s lunch bag from under his desk. Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress(压力)

Everybody gets stressed from time to time.  56    Some ways of dealing with stress like screaming or hitting someonedon't solvemuch. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.

  (2) Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself. Instead,    58  .

  (3)     59  . After you're calm and you have support from adults and  friends, it's time to get down to business. You need to figure out what the problem is. Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.

On weekday mornings, Jeilun Liao, 10, gets up at 7:40 am. He brushes his teeth and gets dressed (穿上衣服). Then he heads to school. Jellun gets between 8 and 10 hours of sleep a night. on most nights, he has a hard time falling asleep. Getting up in the morning isn’t easy for this fourth grader.

Droughts in California

A terrible drought has created trouble in California, USA. A drought is a long period of time with little rain or snow. That means there isn’t enough water. Droughts are natural disasters. But unlike earthquakes or hurricanes(飓风), droughts do not happen suddenly.   21

The drought in the western United States began four years ago. California has been hit hardest. About 95% of the state now has serious drought conditions. About 3,500 people in East Porterville, California, have no running water in their homes.  22   Some people haven’t had running water for years. Rivers and lakes have been drying up, too. That’s a problem for fish and animals.  23   As a result, farms might lose more than $2 billion in 2015. More than 18,000 farm jobs have been lost.

Scientists aren’t sure when the problem will end. A rainy autumn and winter could help. Experts say it will take 11 trillion gallons(加仑) of water to end the drought.  24    They take the water home for washing dishes, cleaning toilets, and more.  25    They’ve stopped watering lawns(草坪) and washing cars. “We need to make the best use of what we have,” explains weather scientist Michael Anderson.

A. Instead, they happen slowly.

B. Without water, farms can’t grow as much food.

C. Future droughts in California are likely to last longer.

D. That’s because the drought has caused their wells to dry up.

E. All across California, people are saving water any way they can.

F. California is a state located on the West Coast of the United States.

G. Many people drive to fire stations to fetch water.

Many years ago my student asked me the question, "Mrs. Kindred, why do you teach?" Without taking time to reflect, I answered, "Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someone's life." Even though I was sincere, that wasn't a very good answer and my student didn't let it slide.

"Let me get this straight," he said, "You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?" He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. I'm one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty, or swift.

Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach:

It's in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(逐渐灌输) in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors.

Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the ripples go on and on until they reach the shore. You can't have ripples without a "stone." Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and that's what I strive to do.

    I genuinely love teenagers.

I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid some potholes() on the road of life, I want to do so. If they'll allow me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do too.

Teaching isn't for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.

8.Why did the student continue to ask the question about the writer’s being a teacher?

A.Because he thought her answer was unbelievable.
B.Because the writer was insincere.
C.Because the student was naughty.
D.Because the answer was difficult to understand.

9.What do you think of the writer?

A.Stupid.        B.Honest.    C.Conservative(保守的).   D.Polite.

10.According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?

A.The writer’s mother has the greatest influence on her.
B.The writer’s answer made the student confused.
C.In the writer’s opinion, some people in the world are unfit to teach.
D.The writer annoyed the student who asked the question.

11.We can infer from the text that _________.

A.the writer was also a good teacher in school
B.the writer often plays with her students beside a pond
C.the writer devotes herself to teaching and her students
D.the writer often accompanies the students on their way home

12.What’s the main idea of the text?

A.A student’s silly question.
B.A good teacher who likes students.
C.A confused student.
D.The reason why I teach.
