Eighty-five percent of the jobs that today's students will do in 2030 don't exist yet, the Institute for the Future has predicted. That might seem like a high number to reach in only 10 years. But think about the non-mainstream careers that did not exist just a handful of years ago: social media manager, app developer and cloud computing engineer, etc. What role should colleges and universities play in preparing students for a workplace that is constantly changing? Educational institutions are trying to answer that question. "We hope they will not only be prepared for whatever the job market looks like in 10, 20 or 50 years but be the ones shaping it," said Jenn Stringer, professor at the University of Californian, Berkeley. Here are some of the approaches they're taking.

Some experts argue that the four-year learning model needs to be rethought in a big way. They say education can no longer be seen as something that stops when a person graduates from college. If students could take a year or two off school, get a job, and then return to school a few years later, the education system would offer true life-long learning and better adapt to changing technology.

Fewer employers are willing to train people on the job than the employers 50 years ago, largely as part of an effort to cut costs. To fill the job skills gap, some courses are offered as an add-on to a student's main degree. For example, the courses may include data analysis, web design and digital marketing. The goal is to offer students, a degree aside, some advantages when they seek jobs or promotions in the future.

Other institutions are trying to imitate the workplace within the traditional classroom. Several colleges have partnered with private companies, such as the software company Adobe, to integrate their products into the classroom. Professors at schools who partner with the company are encouraged to use the product for assignments. The idea is that students learn how to create a project that can be used in the real world and the" soft skills" such as teamwork and creativity.

Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding.

We experience this tiredness in two ways: as start-up fatigue (疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it has either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel. Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first.

Years ago, I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical (按字母顺序), never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day's work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.

Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can — then let the unconscious take over.

When planning Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable.

One day, mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Then, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.

An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind provided correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing.

Human beings, I believe, must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.

  1. (1) People with start-up fatigue are most likely to     .
    A . delay tasks B . work hard C . seek help D . accept failure
  2. (2) What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue?
A . Writing essays in strict order. B . Building up physical strength. C . Leaving out the toughest ideas. D . Dealing with the hardest task first.
  3. (3) On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue?
A . Before starting a difficult task. B . When all the solutions fail. C . If the job is rather boring. D . After finding a way out.
  4. (4) According to the author, the unconscious mind may help us ____________ .
A . ignore mental problems B . get some nice sleep C . gain complete relief D . find the right solution

China and Western country may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals. But when it comes to pigs, we somehow reach an agreement that pigs are lazy, ugly, stupidly and shameless. Neither of these words describing pigs are exactly positive. Moreover, the truth is what pigs have some good qualities. And there's probably no good time to clear their names than now, with the arrival of the Year of the Pig on Chinese Spring Festival, which fell February 5 this year. According to a paper publishing in 2017, pigs can tell between those who treat them well or those who don't. Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep it in mind—their intelligence, cuteness and patience.

In 2010, after six years of training and further six years on the wards, I resigned from my job as a junior doctor. My parents still haven't forgiven me.

Last year, the General Medical Council wrote to me to say they were taking my name off the medical register. It wasn't exactly a huge shock, as I hadn't practiced medicine in half a decade. ________

It was, however, excellent news for my spare room, as I cleared out box after box of old paperwork, tearing files up fast. One thing I did rescue from the jaws of death was my training portfolio (档案袋). All doctors are recommended to log their clinical experience, in what's known as reflective practice. On looking through this portfolio for the first time in years, my reflective practice seemed to involve going up to my hospital on-call room and writing down anything remotely interesting that had happened that day.

Among the funny and the dull, I was reminded of the long hours and the huge impact being a junior doctor had on my life. Reading back, it felt extreme and unreasonable in terms of what was expected of me, but at the time I'd just accepted it as part of the job. There were points where I wouldn't have stepped back if an entry read "had to eat a helicopter today".

Around the same time that I was reliving all this through my diaries, junior doctors in the here and now were coming under fire from politicians. I couldn't help but feel doctors were struggling to get their side of the story across (probably because they were at work the whole time) and it struck me that the public weren't hearing the truth about what it actually means to be a doctor. Rather than shrugging my shoulders and ignoring the evidence, I decided I had to do something to redress the balance.

So here they are: the diaries I kept during my time in the NHS, verruca's and all. What it's like working on the front line, the consequences in my personal life, and how, one terrible day, it all became too much for me. (Sorry for the spoiler of my book beforehand, but you still watched Titanic knowing how that was going to play out.)

Along the way, I'll help you out with the medical terminology and provide a bit of context about what each job involved. Unlike being a junior doctor, I won't just drop you in the deep end and expect you to know exactly what you're doing.

  1. (1) Which of the following can be put in the blank in Paragraph 2?
A . But I found it a hard job to pick up my practice of medicine. B . But I found it an easy task to turn over a new leaf in the long term. C . But I found it a simple act to get involved in self-reflection as a junior doctor. D . But I found it a big deal on an emotional level to permanently close this chapter of my life.
  2. (2) The author cleared out box after box of old paperwork so fast because________.
A . he was disappointed at being dismissed from the NHS B . being removed from his position served his purpose C . being rescued from the jaws of death discouraged him D . he had promised to keep his patients' personal information secret
  3. (3) Which of the following best explains "redress the balance" underlined in Paragraph 5?
A . Argue with politicians. B . Tell the full story of doctors. C . Collect more solid evidence. D . Win the support of the public.
  4. (4) What does the author intend to do by writing this article?
A . Reveal what it means to be a junior doctor. B . Inform readers of some medical knowledge. C . Give some background information on a book. D . Encourage more people to practice medicine.

If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, chances are you have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy(脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication challenges and sight problems, that standard assessments (and by “standard”, I mean the ones used to assess kids with special needs ) aren’t always an accurate measure of her abilities.

By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year-old teacher in Jacksonville, Florida ,who starts his special education class by calling up each student individually to give them much admiration and a high-five. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence and self-worth increase rapidly,” he said . All I could think was: How lucky these students are to have such inspirational teachers.

Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: awesome. Her teacher doesn’t focus on what can’t be done—she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase tenfold. She uses words she wouldn’t have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmate’s trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try.

I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all possess. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.

Ulmer’s reach as a teacher goes far beyond the walls of his classroom. In fact, he teaches all of us to take a moment and truly appreciate the strengths of an important person in our lives.

24. What does the underlined “it” in Line 5 refer to?

   A. The cerebral palsy with Syona.            B. The saying on a classroom wall.

   C. The standard for kids with special needs.    D. The accurate measure of Syona’s abilities.

25. What can we learn about Chris Ulmer?

A. He is Syona’s favorite teacher.

B. He helps increase his students’ confidence.

C. He uses videos to teach his students.

D. He asks his students to help each other.

26. Why did Syona feel very pleased in the third paragraph?

A. She has developed a positive attitude.

B. Her mother knew what she expressed.

C. Her progress was appreciated by her parents.

D. She had been to Ecuador with her classmate.

27. What change has taken place in the author’s family

A. They invite Ulmer’s students to their home.

B. They visit Umer’s classroom regularly.

C. They feel grateful to people in their lives.

D. They give each other praise every day.

Chinese kungfu is one of the earliest and longest-lasting sports that use both muscle and brain. Over its long history it has developed as a unique combination of exercise, practical self-defense, self-discipline and art.

It is estimated that Chinese kungfu can date back to primitive society. At that time, people used sticks to fight wild beasts. Gradually, they accumulated a great deal of self-defense experience. When the Shang Dynasty began, hunting was considered an important part of kungfu training .

During the Shang and Zhou dynasties, martial arts(武术) evolved to become a kind of dancing. Usually, the dancing of martial arts was used to train soldiers and inspire their morale. At the same time, the skill and technology of sword making as well as sword ceremonies developed rapidly.

Starting from the Tang Dynasty, a kungfu examination was proposed and introduced. Excellent candidates would receive titles and awards through the examination, largely promoting the development of martial arts. By then, martial arts had evolved to become an art form and an independent genre. Kungfu was gradually introduced to many countries in Southeast Asia. Today , kungfu is honored as the ancestor of kickboxing(跆拳道), karate(空手道) and judo.

The Song and Yuan dynasties witnessed the climax of kungfu development. The practice of kungfu by civil organizations became more and more popular. People actually made a living as martial arts performers all over the country. Usually their performance was carried out by a single person or two people as a pair.

Chinese kungfu achieved greater development in the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the Ming Dynasty, a lot of genres came into being and numerous books on martial arts were published. In the Qing Dynasty, the ruling empire banned the practice of martial arts, and the people had to set up various clubs or societies to pass on the skills in secret.

Today, kungfu continues to be practiced by many people for the purpose of keeping fit or improving body image.
