Amazon is opening its 12th high-tech convenience store Tuesday in New York. The spot will be the first of the chain to allow customers to pay with cash. The move comes with growing resistance against cashless stores, which critics say refuse to serve people who don't have bank accounts.

At other locations of the store, shoppers enter by scanning the Amazon Go app. That's still the case for customers paying with a credit card, but people paying with cash will have an" entry associate" scan them through the turnstiles (旋转栅门). Once they're finished, those shoppers will check out with an Amazon Go employee and receive a paper receipt. Cashless customers can still walk out by scanning a phone that has the Amazon Go app at the turnstiles. Customers using the Go app can exit without waiting and get a digitized receipt.

The 1,300-square-foot New York store-the first Amazon Go store on the East Coast-will offer prepared foods, such as sandwiches and salads. It will also have Amazon Meal Kits and locally made options.

Amazon says it will begin accepting cash at its other Go stores" over time." A number of retailers (零售商) and restaurants, such as Sweetgreen and Dos Toros Taqueria, are facing roadblocks to their cashless recommendations.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently signed a law banning cashless stores in that state. Philadelphia also passed a law to prohibit cashless stores earlier this month, and officials in New York City, Washington and San Francisco are considering similar moves. The federal government does not require retailers to accept cash.

"While card-only may be convenient for some businesses, it can actually be discriminatory(歧视的,不公平的)against poor communities that don't have as much access to banks or lines of credit," said New Jersey State Senator Nellie Pou, who sponsored the state's new law. Not accepting cash could also be bad for business. Americans use it in 30% of all business deals, according to a 2017 report from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

  1. (1) Why is Amazon opening a new store accepting cash?
A . To persuade those critics. B . To obey the local regulations. C . To improve its retail service. D . To compete with cashless stores.
  2. (2) What will shoppers paying with cash do at the new store?
A . Exit in line with a digitized receipt. B . Walk out by scanning a phone with the Go app. C . Enter through the turnstiles by scanning a phone. D . Check out with an employee and get a paper receipt.
  3. (3) How did some states and cities react to cashless stores?
A . By making laws to stop them. B . By requiring retailers to run them. C . By learning from Amazon to improve them. D . By following the federal government to accept them.
  4. (4) What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A . It's necessary to make cashless stores easily accessible. B . More banks should be built in poor communities. C . Card-only payment is convenient for business. D . Not accepting cash has its disadvantages.

However, the attitudes of scientists towards this rise are (complete) different. On one hand, Dr Foster thinks that any trend in which the temperature increases by 5 degrees would lead a catastrophe. Recently, one of my friends have sent me a short message, say that true friends are one soul in two bodies, which moves me very much and makes me think what true friendship is.

Nowadays, the word "friendship" has been used very often that it has lost its meaning. Some jokingly put it that friends are made to be taken advantage. In my opinion, true friendship doesn't mean that where you need your friends help, you'll treat them to dinner. True friendship is the communication of the hearts and understand of the souls. True friends keep you in the mind, no matter where they are. Once you have found such true friends, do treasure him. With friendship, life proves happily and harmonious.

Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house might help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say.

"It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity(强度)activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial," said Ulf Ekelund, who led the research.

Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable.

For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team found a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message "sit less and move more and more often".

However, the study had limitations. It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time.

Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the study.

"This study reinforces the important message that getting the least active people to do even just a little bit more physical activity can have important public health benefits," he said.

  1. (1) Which of the following may Ulf Ekelund suggest elderly people do?
A . lying on the sofa reading. B . Doing a little gentle gardening. C . Going out to hike with friends. D . Playing basketball sometimes.
  2. (2) What can we know about the research?
A . It lasted about 8 years. B . The researchers admitted they used fake data. C . The participants didn't include younger people. D . Some participants died because of doing too much physical activity
  3. (3) What is the author's attitude towards the researchers' conclusion?
    A . Doubtful B . Critical C . Supportive D . Neutral
  4. (4) Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word "reinforces" in the last paragraph?
    A . Highlights B . Conveys C . Excludes D . Denies

Baggy has become the first dog in the UK—and potentially the world—to join the fight against air pollution by recording pollutant levels near the ground.

Baggy wears a pollution monitor on her collar so she can take data measurements close to the ground. Her monitor has shown that air pollution levels are higher closer to ground level, which has helped highlight concerns that babies and young kids may be at higher risk of developing lung problems.

Conventional air pollution monitors are normally fixed on lampposts at about nine feet in the air. However, since Baggy stands at about the same height as a child in a pushchair(婴儿车), she frequently records pollution levels which are much higher than the data gathered by the Environment A gency.

The doggy data research was the idea of Baggy's 13-year-old owner Tom Hunt and his dad Matt. The English youngster noticed that pollution levels are around two-thirds higher close to the ground than they are in the air at the height where they are recorded by the agency. Tom has since reported the shocking findings to the government in an attempt to emphasise that babies are at higher risk of developing asthma(哮喘).

Matt Hunt said he was "very proud" of his son because “when the boy gets an idea, he keeps his head down and gets on with it, and he really does want to do some good and stop young kids from getting asthma."

“Tom built up a passion for environmental protection at a very early age," Matt added. “He became very interested in gadgets(小装置). About one year ago, he got this new piece of tech which is like a test tube. One Sunday afternoon, we went out to do some monitoring, and he said, why don't we put it on Baggy's collar and let her monitor the pollution'So we did it."

Tom said, "Most of the time, Baggy is just like any other dog. But for the rest of the time she is a super dog, and we are all really proud of her."

34With a monitor on her collar, Baggy can ____________.

Atake pollutant readings                                Brecord pollutant levels

Cprocess collected data                                 Dreduce air pollution

35What can we learn from the Baggy data?

AHigh places are free of air pollution.

BHigher pushchairs are more risky for kids.

CConventional monitors are more reliable.

DAir is more polluted closer to the ground.

36What is Tom's purpose of doing the research?

ATo warn of a health risk.                             BTo find out pollution sources.

CTo test his new monitor.                              DTo prove Baggy's abilities.

37According to the passage, which word can best describe Tom Hunt?

AModest.                 BGenerous.               CCreative.                DOutgoing.
