Maltese studied international business and leadership at Marietta College in Ohio. When searching for a summer job, he found a local coffee shop that was hiring applied and was hooked.
"Applying for my first job in coffee was terrifying. Everyone looked indescribably cool and extremely knowledgeable about coffee," says Maltese. "But I gave it a shot and applied. Seeing as I had no previous coffee experience, I relied on my personality alone." Since then, Maltese has worked for and even managed several coffee shops, and now he hopes to someday run his own cafe.
Maltese's dream of becoming a barista(咖啡师) began while he was watching his favorite situation comedy Friends.in which the life of a barista seems trendy, cool, laid-back and fun. And that's exactly the image that attracted 21-year-old Maltese to the job.
But after years of work in this industry, Maltese discovered that the job takes much more than serving coffee all day long.
"I realize now that the work is not easy," he says, "and you have to really love what you're doing in order to make a career out of it.
Keeping up with streams of high demand, dynamic customers can be one of the challenges baristas face, but. Maltese says "simply making someone happy with a cup of coffee" makes it all worth it.
Maltese says working in coffee is harder and more serious than most people think the daily challenges of a barista are mainly focused on interacting(交流)with the customers as well as the staff.
"It definitely takes a lot of determination, hard work and confidence to make it in the industry," says Maltese. "If one person on the team is upset or tired, everyone suffers—including the customer. At the end of the day, we want everyone to walk away with a positive experience."
We went to the T. B. Blackstone Library, not far from Lake Michigan. You could easily miss the building if you didn't know what you were looking for. But once you were inside, you could never mistake it for anything else. We passed through two sets of heavy brass doors to the lobby(大堂) of the library. And if we turned right then, we could see an alcove(壁龛) with tables; this led, in turn, to a big reading room with a gigantic and ancient globe that sat in front of the largest windows. I liked to look at Africa, with the coded colors of the different countries like the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, and try to remember which countries were fighting to be free just as we were struggling for civil rights. I had heard Daddy talking about the struggle, arguing with the television as someone discussed it on a news show.
One Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section, I saw a title: Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. I could tell from looking at the shelf that she'd written a lot of books, but I didn't know anything about her. I had learned from experience that titles weren't everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home, and every bad book I brought home meant one less book to read until we went back in two weeks. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs:
"Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbled Jo, lying on the rug. "It's so dreadful to be poor!" sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress.
"I don't think it's fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all," added little Amy, with an injured sniff.
"We've got Father and Mother and each other," said Beth contentedly from her corner.
It was a good thing I'd already decided on some other books to take home, because I didn't look through the rest of the section that day. I read and read and read Little Women until it was time to walk home, and, except for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating, I would not put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in the wake of Alcott's story. It was about girls, for one thing, girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo. It seemed to me a shame that she wasn't Black; then our similarity would be complete. She loved to read, she loved to make up plays, she hated acting ladylike, and she had a dreadful temper. I had found a kindred(亲属关系) spirit.
Before he sailed round the world alone, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. He had tried to fly round the world but failed. That was in 1931.
The years passed. He gave up flying and began sailing. He enjoyed it greatly. Chichester was already 58 years old when he won the first solo transatlantic sailing race. His old dream of going round the world came back, but this time he would sail. His friends and doctors did not think he could do it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his plan. In August 1966, at the age of nearly 65, an age when many men retire, he began the greatest voyage of his life.
Chichester covered 14100 miles before stopping in Sydney, Australia. This was more than twice the distance anyone had previously sailed alone. He arrived in Australia on 12 December, just 107 days out from England. He received a warm welcome from the Australians and from his family who had flown there to meet him. On shore, Chichester could not walk without help. Everybody said the same thing: he had done enough; he must not go any further. But he did not listen.
After resting in Sydney for a few weeks, Chichester set off once more in spite of his friends' attempts to dissuade him. The second half of his voyage was by far the more dangerous part, during which he sailed round the treacherous Cape Horn. After succeeding in sailing round Cape Horn, Chichester sent the following radio message to London: "I feel as if I had wakened from a nightmare. Wild horses could not drag me down to Cape Horn and that sinister Southern Ocean again."
Just before 9 o'clock on Sunday evening 28 May 1967, he arrived back in England, where a quarter of a million people were waiting to welcome him. Queen Elizabeth II knighted (授以爵位) him with the very sword that Queen Elizabeth I had used almost 400 years earlier to knight Sir Francis Drake after he had sailed round the world for the first time. The whole voyage from England and back had covered 28,500 miles. It had taken him nine months, of which the sailing time was 226 days. He had done what he wanted to accomplish.
Canadian students devote much of their spare time to community volunteering. In fact, most schools require their students to1a certain number of community hours during their four years of high school. Students can find volunteer jobs at2places, from the school library to a charity.
Not long ago, I was a(n)3at a community school as a teacher's assistant (助理). Since the class I was 4 was an elementary class with students aged between 4 and 10, I needed to5the teacher with the class work as well as6the kids. From escorting (护送) them to the bathroom to7their fights, I helped to keep them in order.
When I started doing this job, I was very8, as I wasn't used to dealing with kids. When I9talked to them, it was like there were tons of butterflies in my stomach. But as time went by, we started to10very well.
They began to talk about their11with me—what they did at the weekend, what kind of hamburgers they had at McDonald's, and what books they had12.They also told me about their favorite cartoons and13their snacks with me in the classroom.
Once, the teacher asked the kids to14their best friends. Many of them drew a tall guy, and they said to me as they pointed at the15, "This is you, You are my best friend." After16that, I was so happy—I17thought I'd become so close friends with kids so much18than me.
19I've already completed my community hours, I still go to the community school every week, mainly for the warm greetings from the kids and the20they bring me.
Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that winds up in landfills, and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is no effective way to get rid of it. but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms.
Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater wax moth can break down polyethylene (聚乙烯),which accounts for 40% of plastics. The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms' chewing alone was not responsible for the poly ethylene breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste (糊状物)and applied it to plastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass — apparently broken down by enzymes (酶)from the worms' stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology in 2017.
Federica Bertocchini. co-author of the study, says the worms' ability to break down their everyday food - beeswax — also allows them to break down plastic. "Wax is a complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, is there as well," she explains, “The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this bond.”
Jennifer DeBruyn, a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes (肠道微生物)?
Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team's findings might one day help employ the enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process - not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic.”
Employment is the foundation of people's livelihood, one end is connected with economic development, and the other end is connected with thousands of families. It is a straightforward expression of having people in mind and responsibility in mind to do a good job in the employment of graduates by all means. It is of great significance to release the annual report of graduates' employment quality to find out the deep problems of talent cultivation, to analyze the solutions to the structural contradictions of employment, to plan innovative development paths, to promote the school's talent cultivation and the national development strategy, to resonate with the thoughts of teachers, students, parents and employers, and to promote the coordinated development of talent cultivation structure, quality, characteristics and scale significance.
The University attaches great importance to the investigation and writing of the graduates' employment quality annual report, and establishes a special class to carry out questionnaire investigation, chart data analysis, language logic self consistency and visual communication design. On November 4, 2020, the University issued an online questionnaire to all the graduates of the year 2020. As of November 20, 6757 valid questionnaires have been collected, accounting for 86.80% of the total number of graduates. Meanwhile, the University conducted a questionnaire survey on 319 influential employers who received our graduates in recent three years. This report consists of six sub reports, which are respectively the scale of graduates and the basic situation of employment, the analysis of graduates' employment results, the feedback of graduates' training, the feedback of employers on the quality of graduates' training, the analysis of development trend and the analysis of special topics. In particular, 2020 The annual report of graduates' employment quality in is not only satisfied with showing objective "figures", but focuses on professional certification and other work. For normal graduates and non normal graduates, the employers in education industry and non education industry carry out data statistics respectively. At the same time, it focuses on "comparative analysis of undergraduate normal students and non normal students", "employment analysis of undergraduate public normal students" and "independent evaluation" "Entrepreneurship analysis" and "analysis of the situation of unemployed graduates" are four major topics, which deeply excavate the "digital" and respond to the concerns of schools and society.
Finally, I would like to thank all the managers and researchers who participated in the writing of this report and the readers who read this report.

Five keys to happiness
Self
Your self includes your education, your health and your sense of purpose — the feeling that you are doing something important. It's important to take care of yourself. First, find a hobby. You can also volunteer. Volunteering takes the focus off your own problems and makes you feel thankful for what you have.
Home
Create a quiet, dark area where you can sit and relax. Paint your living room yellow — it can increase energy and improve feelings. It also helps to own a pet. Pets can increase their owners' self-esteem, make them feel calm, and provide love and friendship.
Financial life
This is the way you think about and spend money. According to an expert, the key to greater well-being is to have money, but not to want it too much.Try not to waste money. Buy things that will really enrich your life, such as music lessons and dinners with friends and family.
Social life
Have friends that encourage you to eat right, to be active, to laugh, and to do your best. Researchers have found that having a close, happy friend can raise a person's mood by nine percent, while each unhappy friend lowers it by seven percent.
Workplace
Your office, or wherever you spend your working hours, is a big part of your life. So it should be a place that you like. You don't want to spend 40 hours a week with people that you dislike. And do something that you feel strongly about. That's more important than a big salary.
A. It's important to have a good group of friends.
B. Find a job with people that you enjoy being around.
C. How you organize your home can make you happier.
D. The place where you live is probably more comfortable.
E. Try to spend money on things that give you long-lasting pleasure.
F. Walking makes you healthier, and healthier people are happier people.
G. This gives you a chance to spend time focusing on your interests and gifts.

As part of our mission to inspire the next generation of scientists, inventors and engineers, the Science Museum Group (SMG) has launched an exciting new online game—Total Darkness.
Over the last year we have been developing Total Darkness with the aim of creating an experience that can have a positive impact on people’s attitudes towards STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), as well as having a focus on self-reflection, rather than asking players to recall specific facts or concepts.
Total Darkness is a digital storytelling experience which encourages young people to recognise how the skills they use every day relate to STEM and can help them develop their confidence in science thinking. The game invites the player to solve a mysterious power cut in their hometown. The game puts players in control, allowing their choices and decisions to guide them through the story.
As the player navigates through the darkened streets of the town, equipped only with a torch, they will face various challenges. Using their curiosity, communication skills and creative problem solving, they will discover new theories about what might have caused the blackout( 停电;断电 ). But with every step their torch fades, and the player must solve the mystery before the battery runs out.
The player’s choices and actions throughout the game will score them curiosity, creativity or communication points. At the end, the skills the player has used will be revealed along with their science style, showing how they could put their skills into action in the real world.
Total Darkness is aimed at 8-15 year-olds—an important stage in teens’ science development. Research shows that as teens make the step between primary and secondary, many move away from an interest in science as other influences have a stronger pull in their lives.
Total Darkness is a free online game playable on smartphone, tablet and desktop. Play now at totaldarkness.sciencemuseum.org.uk .

How do learning habits influence learning results? It's useful and necessary to discuss learning habits. There is a famous __1__(say)“Good habits lead to good endings”, which shows the importance of habits.
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” also __2__(show) a healthy everyday habit helps to build up our body. Thus, good learning habits can help us gain great learning results, high scores and abundant knowledge __3__(include). At first, learning habits form our ways of thinking and attitude __4__ the content of our learning. __5__(obvious), a good habit can help us to speed up to reach our destinations. We can start the habit by __7__(write)a learning summary and remember to record something impressive and meaningful. Keep it in mind, __8__ gradually we can gain this good learning habit and benefit from it.
What's __9__(much), I find out that I still have some bad learning habits __10__ well. I can only concentrate on reading for a short time, and I will conquer this problem by spending more efforts on concentration practice.
I believe that through my efforts, I can gain good learning results by having good habits.
You do not need every word to understand the meaning of what you read. In fact, too much focus on individual words both slows your speed and reduces your comprehension. You will be given the chance to prove this to yourself, but meanwhile, let us look at the implications.
First, any habit, which slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak, or read aloud, is inefficient (无效的). If you point to each word as you read, or move your head, or form the word with your lips, you read poorly. Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency. One is “saying” each word silently by moving your tongue or throat or vocal cords(声带), and another is “hearing” each word you read.
These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago. The beginning reader is learning how letters can make words, how written words are pronounced, and how sentences are put together. Your reading purpose is quite different; it is to understand meaning.
It has been assumed that up to 75 % of the words in English sentences are not really necessary for passing on the meaning. The secret of silent reading is to seek out those key words and phrases which carry the thought, and to pay less attention to words which exist only for the sake of grammatical completeness.
An efficient reader can grasp the meaning from a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page loud. Without realizing it himself perhaps, he takes in whole phrase or thought unit at a time. If he “says” or “hears” word to himself, they are selected ones, said for emphasis (重点).
61. This passage is mainly about ______.
A. improving eye movements B. reading more widely
C. removing poor reading habits D. concentrating while reading
62. Saying each word to yourself as you read ______.
A. improves comprehension B. increases reading speed
C. prevents returning D. reduces reading efficiency
63. Your reading purpose should be ______.
A. to understand all words B. to make fewer eye movements
C. to understand the meaning D. to understand the grammatical structures
64. It has been assumed that up to 75 % of words in English sentences are ______.
A. grammatically unnecessary
B. important and necessary to the meaning
C. not absolutely necessary to grasp the meaning
D. entirely meaningless
65. Efficient readers usually ______.
A. move their heads quickly B. take in whole phrases at a time
C. point at key words D. miss some important points for readers
In my childhood, I envied my classmates very much as my absence from school was not allowed due to my strict parents. I had to be 41 in order to stay home. My parents 42 to say that they were leading me to have a 43 work ethic (职业道德). Not until last week did I see the 44 .
