A culture guide named Persephone welcomes travellers to Greece and takes them through a famous cave in the north. The guide moves smoothly around the underground area and can talk about it in 33 languages. It can also answer 33 questions, but only in the Greek language.

Persephone is intelligent and it is a human-sized robot. The robot has been in operation for about a month at the Alistrati Cave. Persephone guides visitors through the first 150 metres of the cave that is open to the public. For the remaining 750 metres, a human guide takes over.

The idea of creating the robot guide was put forward by Nikos Kartalis, who is the scientific director at the Alistrati site. He had this idea when he saw one on television guiding visitors at an art show. Persephone was built by the National Technology and Research Foundation and cost about 139,000 dollars. "People who had visited in the past are coming back to see the robot guide," said Nikos. "Many foreign visitors couldn't believe Greece had the ability to build a robot and use it as a guide in the cave."

The robot, with a white body, black head, and two bright eyes, moves on wheels. It guides visitors to the first three of eight stops along the walkway. It can do two more stops, but it is too slow for the tour. Persephone's creators are considering ways to increase her speed. The robot begins the tour by saying, "My name is Persephone. I welcome you to the Alistrati Cave. "

Evdokia Karafera is a human guide who partners with Persephone. "It is helpful, because it speaks many languages," she said. "There's just a little delay in the touring. Most find it fascinating, especially the children, and find it interesting that it speaks many languages. Robots, at some point in the future, will take over many jobs. But I believe they cannot take the place of humans everywhere."

A . Its limited colour of its body. B . Its slow speed. C . Its unstable moving patterns. D . Its short greeting. .
  4. (4) What does Evdokia want to stress in the last paragraph?
A . Persephone is intended to attract the children, B . Persephone is helpless in making the site famous. C . Robots will play a less important role in the future. D . Robots are unable to replace humans everywhere.

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really make a conscious effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.

Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.

Memory "tricks" work the other way as well. Once in a while, you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.

We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people's forgetfulness or absent -mindedness. Stories about absent -minded professors have been told for years, and we never get tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent -mindedness is not always funny. There are times when "tricks" of our memory can cause us great trouble.

  1. (1) If you want to have a good memory, you should ________.
A . never stop learning new things B . use your memory to play tricks C . make a conscious effort of practice D . force yourself to remember things
  2. (2) What can be learnt from the text?
A . One night the writer locked the front door as usual. B . The writer had had his hair cut two days before. C . The writer got into trouble when crossing the street. D . The writer was regarded as a forgetful professor.
  3. (3) How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 4?
A . We enjoy hearing new stories about absent -mindedness of professors. B . We will never get tired of listening to new stories about absent-mindedness. C . Absent- mindedness happens not only to professors but to many other people. D . We are unwilling to know anything more about absent-mindedness of professors.

In the summer of 1848, in Guatemala, a man called Ambrosio Tut went out into the jungle, as he did almost every day. Tut was a gum collector, looking for gum in the jungle. To do this, he had to climb the trees. One day, he got to the top of one tree and something caught his eye. He looked out across the trees and saw the tops of some old buildings.

Tut didn't really know what he had seen but he knew it was something special. He ran to tell the local governor excitedly, and together they walked into the jungle. There they found Tikal, the city that the Mayans had built, many hundreds of years before. The two men saw pyramids, squares and houses.

For a long time before that day, local people had known that somewhere in the jungle there was an old Mayan city. But no one had seen it for centuries. Between 200 and 900 AD, the city of Tikal had ben the centre of Mayan civilisation in the area, but then the Mayas let it—nobody knows why! After 1000 AD, the jungle began to cover it. And then people forgot that it was there.

Seven years before Tut found Tikal, two British explorers had gone to Guatemala and had written a report about Mayan treasures in the jungle—but they hadn't mentioned Tikal. Even earlier than this, local Indians had told people about a great city hidden in the trees, but no one had listened to them. So they lost the chance to find the treasure. Now the lost city had been found again, and people went there immediately to see it.

  1. (1) Which of the following statement is true according to the passage?
A . Tut found the Tikal city by accident. B . Mayans lived in Tikal over 1,000 years. C . Two British explorers found many treasures there. D . Local Indians knew nothing about the Tikal city.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word “this” in the first paragraph refer to?
A . Climbing the trees. B . Looking for gum. C . Going into the jungle. D . Looking for treasures.
  3. (3) What could be the best title of this passage?
A . The Man Who Found Tikal. B . The Greatest Discovery in the World. C . A City in the Jungle. D . The Secret of Tikal City.

Do you find it difficult to put down your mobile phone?

If yes, you're not alone. These days, many people suffer from the stress of FOMO (fear of missing out). They reach for their mobile phones when they wake up in the morning, and for the rest of the day, they constantly scroll down (向下滚动) the timelines of their social media apps to get the latest updates.

Despite the convenience smartphones bring, many people struggle with their digital habits.

As Sameer Samat, US tech Company Google's vice president of product management, said in his speech at the 2018 Google I/O developer conference on May 8, 70 percent of people don't want to spend so much time on their phones.

This is why during the conference Google introduced an app called Dashboard for the new version (版本) of its Android operating system. This new app includes well-being functions that aim to help users manage the time they spend on their digital devices.

It all starts with a bird's-eye view. Dashboard allows users to look at all the details of their phone habits. For example, a user can see how many times they've unlocked their phone and how many times they've checked their social media apps, as well as how much time they spend on each app every day.

Once the users see this information, they'll be able to make some changes. With the App Timer function, users can set a time limit for how long they can use each app for every day. After they've hit the limit, they won't be able to launch the app until the next day.

But even if users become more mindful of their usage, they're still likely to be drawn in by notifications (通知). This is where the Shush feature comes in. It automatically (自动地) silences incoming calls and notifications when a user puts their phone face down.

If people truly want to make full use of their free time instead of losing hours using their smart phones, these new functions are just one way of doing that.

After all, who needs to use an app to stop you from using other apps when the easiest answer would be just to use your willpower?

  1. (1) Who are the target users of Dashboard?
A . People who know little about smartphones. B . People who have trouble dealing with stress. C . People who are slow at searching for things online. D . People who wish to manage the time they spend on their smartphone.
  2. (2) What can Dashboard do?
A . Lock the phone at a certain time. B . Limit some apps to certain users. C . Limit the time certain apps can be used. D . Silence app notifications at night.
  3. (3) The underlined word "mindful" in Paragraph 8 is closest in meaning to ______.
    A . serious. B . careful. C . prepared. D . creative.
  4. (4) What does the author think of Dashboard?
A . It's not very useful. B . It's perfectly designed. C . It should include more functions. D . It may be helpful to some people.
What does the woman think of her Job?
A . Stressful. B . Interesting. C . Relaxing.

Chinese Space Station to Crash back to Earth

There are currently more than 500,000 pieces of space junk being tracked as they circle Earth. Space junk, or debris, consists of bits of metal, satellites and even a space station that is no longer in use, all of it circling the planet. Now this space station is about to fall to Earth.

Tiangong-1 was China's first space station. It was in 2011, but the country lost contact with it in March 2016 and later that year, Chinese officials confirmed that the 3.5-metre-wide would return to Earth.

At the moment, scientists don't know exactly where or when the space station will enter the planet's atmosphere, but believe it will be between 30 March and 2 April. There is no need to worry, though. While scientists can't say where it will land, there is very little that the space station will hit a populated area. This is because most of it will burn up in Earth's atmosphere - a(n) of gases that protect the planet. Also, because most of Earth is covered in water, scientists think that if there is any debris, it will fall into the sea.

As the landing date gets closer, scientists will be able to determine where it will fall - if necessary - steps will be taken to keep people safe and . A statement by Aerospace, a US company that advises the US government about space travel, said, "In the history of spaceflight, no known person has ever been harmed by space debris(残留物)."

One thing scientists are confident of, though, is that wherever it enters the atmosphere, the debris will create a spectacular fireball for anyone enough to see it.

The US will have a new president this fall. Voters will decide between the Democratic candidate (候选人), Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump of the Republicans.

But the voting is not a must for each person in the US. So quite a lot of people choose not to vote, especially the young generation. According to Fox News, one-in-five young voters between the ages of 18 and 35 said clearly that they wouldn't vote for either of the two candidates. Just 12 percent of voters aged 35-54, and only nine percent of voters aged 55 and older said the same thing.

This is not only because young people don't like Clinton or Trump, according to the Fortune magazine. The truth is that they are traditionally less likely to vote than their parents.

“Young people are not at an age in their life when they think politics or government has anything to do with them,” said Rodd Freitag, a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, US. “But for the older age groups, they have a home, they pay taxes (税), they care about schools and the community.”

Many believe that the civic (公民的) education of an American youth is another reason why they don't vote.

Students usually just do community services like cleaning the neighborhoods. This means they haven't learned how to link real life problems to politics through voting, according to Christopher Beem, a politics professor at the Pennsylvania State University.

He said the country needs to help young people learn how to take part in politics and get them to see that they can make a difference.

  1. (1) What percentage of young voters wouldn't go to vote?
    A . 9 percent. B . 12 percent. C . 20 percent. D . 55 percent.
  2. (2) According to Rodd Freitag, young people are less likely to vote because ________.
A . they don't like either of the candidates B . their parents don't like to vote C . they don't think it is a part of their life D . they have no work and care little about living problems
  3. (3) Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A . US Young Not Voting B . US Young and Their President C . Young People's Power D . Voting for the New US President

Time and money are life's most valuable resources. One of the great laws of economics is that time equals money. The phrase "time is money" is usually credited to Benjamin Franklin, who used it in an essay, Advice to a Young Tradesman, 1748.  He encouraged people to treat time like money. However, most people think about time and money in vastly different ways.

Poor or rich, we all have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thus, each of us faces the choice of how to spend our time. In a world of scarcity, choosing one thing means not being able to do something else.

The value of time varies from person to person. Time is relatively scarce for people with higher incomes, partly because their time is more valuable. So, to have lots of time, rich people hire other people to do their household chores.

Time cannot be stored. One of the reasons we give little thought about how we use our limited resources is that we cannot save time.  You can't bottle time and exchange it for an object or event. However, when people are made aware of their mortality (生命的有限) they wonder if they did make the most of their lives.

In sum, time is anything but free. As a non — renewable resource, time is quite expensive.

Do we want to spend these precious moments on social media or spend that time learning something new? Skills and knowledge take time, so the more time you spend on them, the more you improve.

A. Time is our scarcest resource.

B. It means time is a valuable resource.

C. However, it cannot be bought at any price.

D. Time moves on whether we choose to spend it or not

E. Actually, time and money are greatly different from each other.

F. However, a non-working person may spend more time on household chores.

G. Knowing that time is limited encourages us to ask how we are using our time.

At the time I thought I was right, but reflection I think perhaps I wasn't.

Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. When a person does a certain thing again, he is driven by some unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly, then a habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to get rid of. It is therefore very important that we should pay great attention to the formation of habits. Children often form bad habits, some of which remain with them as long as they live. Older persons also form bad habits lasting as long as they live, and sometimes become ruined by them.

There are other habits which, when formed in early life, are of great help. Many successful men say that much of their success has something to do with certain habits in early life, such as early rising, honesty and so on.

Among the habits which children should not form are laziness, lying, stealing and so on. These are all easily formed habits. Unfortunately older persons often form habits which could have been avoided .

We should keep away from all these bad habits, and try to form such habits as will be good for ourselves and others.

1. ________ are formed little by little.

A. Good habits

B. Bad habits

C. Both good habits and bad habits

D. Either good habits or bad habits

2. The underlined word "them" in the first paragraph refers to ________.

A. bad habits      B. good habits

C. children        D. other persons.

3. Why should we pay much attention to the formation of habits?

A. Because habits are of great help to every one of us.

B. Because a man can never get rid of a habit.

C. Because it's hard and sometimes even impossible to throw away bad habits.

D. Because we are forced to do them again and again.

4. According to the passage, early rising ________.

A. has something to do with success

B. is an easily formed habit

C. is such a habit as should have been avoided

D. is such a habit as will be kept

When Pizza Saved a Life

Almost every night for over ten years, Kirk Alexander, 48, ordered dinner from his local Domino’s pizzeria (披萨店). Sometimes he’d   41   a salad, sometimes a pie, sometimes chicken wings.   42   one day, he stopped calling.

“It has been 11 days,” store general manager Sarah Fuller said, “which is not like   43  .”

Sarah had   44   Kirk since 2009. Many delivery drivers regularly made the   45   trip to Kirk’s house, about six minutes away. She knew he   46   at home and that he rarely ventured (冒险) outside. She also knew that he had suffered   47   issues in the past. Something, Sarah   48  , was wrong.

Around 1 a.m. on Sunday, May 8, Sarah   49   delivery driver Tracey Hamblen to Kirk’s home. Tracey approached the door and knocked. She could only see the TV set and lights were on,   50   after several minutes, Kirk still hadn’t answered the door. Tracey called Kirk’s   51  . The call went straight to voice mail.
