Dear Larry,
It was lovely to hear from you again and to know that things are going with you.
Thanks for telling me all the Chinese Moon Festival. It sounds like you enjoyed a great party in Inner Mongolaia(内蒙古). It makes me think of the festival we took part in we traveled in South Africa. The people there kept many goats(山羊), as well as sheep and cows. Beef was expensive and was only for very time. In all our time there we were served beef in the villages, because beef is not usually served to .
By the way, I happened to see these pictures and thought you'd like to see . A Chinese girl gave Tang suits to Joan and me when she left school. We them on in the university car park. Someone took photos for us though I was wearing my kilt(苏格兰短褶裙)! It seemed to be different that some suggested that I could start a new look.
We wore Tang suits to a dinner which was held on the ship in August when we visited Germany. Some Chinese ladies came and spoke to us. They were interested in my traditional Chinese clothing.
We look forward to hearing from you again.
Best Wishes!
Yours,
Ken and Joan

Do you like reading? It is very important for us to learn or study through reading. But now many students say they don't have enough time to read. So we need some skills to help read more in less time while we are doing some reading in class. Here are two skills that I think are very good.
Preview(预读)—if your article is long as well as difficult, such as long magazine articles or science reports, previewing is very useful for you to get a general idea.
Here is how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Of course you can't get all the details by previewing. It tells you not to spend time on things you don't really want or need to read.
Skim(浏览)—if your article is short and simple, like popular magazines or the sports of your daily paper, skimming is a good way to get a main idea. Here's how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same passage, but perhaps we'll get the idea of what it's all about.
I wish all of us could read more books and enjoy reading every day!

Homestays are becoming more and more popular, and people around the world are offering their homes as hotels. Homestays offer cheap places to stay and the chance for guests to see the area like local people. " They are very popular with students who want to stay in another country and learn a language. We asked three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.

The Atal family Our family home is in the north of Nepal, in the Himalayan Mountains, in the village of Manang. The village is small and quiet. It is a very friendly place. The mountains are very beautiful, You can go for long walks and swim in the rivers, but there are no shops, cinemas or café. |
|
Kate and Julian Foxton Our two-bedroom house is by the sea in the southwest of England. It is 15 minutes' drive to the nearest village of Portreath. There are lots of beaches, rivers and forests, and it is very quiet. We spend a lot of time reading books, watching films and going for walks. Our area is great for sports like swimming and mountain biking. There are no buses or trains here, so it can be difficult to get around without a car. |

Chafic and Aline Halwany Our home is near the historic city center of Beirut, Lebanon, a large city in the Middle East. There are lots of cafe and restaurants, which are open late at night. We love it here because it's so friendly and you can always find what you need. Lots of people can come here to learn Arabic and French. There are also a lot of jobs and businesses here. However, it can be noisy at night and there is a lot of traffic during the day. The best thing about Beirut is the weather. It is nice all year round; it rains in the winter, but there is no snow. |
Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. What makes us study and make progress each day is closely connected with our personal dream and goal.
But why do you have dreams and goals, you still end up with nothing? What separates successful people from the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action. When you learn your lessons in school, you must work hard and not give up. You will often find some of your lessons very hard. Try and keep trying, and you'll be sure to successfully deal with any difficulty you meet with. If we have a hard lesson today, let us try our best to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow.
This is the famous formula (公式) for success:
Dream > Believe > Achieve
Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). And then they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired waiting and lose a lot, they get bored. They say angrily how terrible their life is.
I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams and goals in life, you have to add one thing to your success formula:
Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve
For me, act is the most important thing for success and that's to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say, "I can't do it" and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However, "I'll try" creates wonders. Let's remember that there will be obstacles in our life. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not something that falls down from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.
Please remember: Action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality.
Now I live in Chuzhou. This is my new school. Here are many flowers and trees. They are really nice. I like them very much. The teaching building is tall and beautiful. There is a big playground in our school. After 4: 50 in the afternoon, many students come to the playground to play football and some students play table tennis in the table tennis room. There are 1, 200 students in 25 classes in our school. The students all like to study. The teachers in our school are very good. They help the students to study and the students like them too.

A few years ago, a little boy, not (much) than eight years old, went to the store himself. While he was going b home, a dirty dog followed him. The dog was weak because it had a sore leg. After he found the dog was badly hurt, he let it follow him home.
The little boy's mother taught him to be kind and (friend). However, when the little boy asked his mother whether he would let the dog come into the house or n ,she hesitated(犹豫)." We have no room for it, she said. The poor dog seemed to understand w she said. It looked so sad! The little boy almost cried when he saw the dog's big eyes looking up to him (sad).
His mother was actually kind, too. She did not drive the poor hungry dog away, b let it stay in the yard. The little boy gave the dog some food, water and clean dry grass to lie on. They also made it clean.

I like cooking. I often help my mom cook. Chicken is my favorite food to make and eat.
One day, Mom and Dad were not at home. They drove to visit a friend. I wanted to bake (烘烤) the chicken for lunch for my family, I washed the chicken and put it in the oven (烤炉). After about 40 minutes, I went to take the chicken out. Do you know what I found? The chicken was still cold! I started laughing(大笑). I laughed and laughed and laughed! I forgot to turn on the oven!
Mom and Dad would come back soon. I didn't have time to bake the chicken again. So I called on the telephone for sandwiches to come to my house. When my parents came back, I told them how I baked the chicken. Morn and Dad laughed. And they said the sandwiches tasted good.
There once lived a rich businessman who had a lazy son. The businessman wanted his son to realize the value of hard work and said," Today, I want you to go out and earn something, or you won't have your meals tonight."
The son went crying straight to his mother. Her heart melted at her son's eyes. She gave him a gold coin. When the father asked his son what he had earned, the son presented him the gold coin. The father asked him to earn more money.
This time since there was no one to help him, the son had to go to the market. One shopkeeper told him he would pay him two coins if ne carried his wood to his house. He did so and sweated plenty. As he returned home he was asked to do the same. The son almost cried out. He could not imagine throwing his hard-earned money like this. He cried, "My whole body is aching. You are asking me to throw the money into the well."
At this moment, the businessman told him one feels the pain only when the fruits of hard work are wasted. On the earlier two occasions(时机) he was helped and therefore had no pain in throwing the into the well. The son had now realized the value of hard work. He promised never to be lazy and to safely keep the father's wealth. The father handed over the keys of his shop to the son and promised to guide him through the rest of the life.
a. The boy's mother gave him a coin.
b. The boy went to ask his mother for help.
c. The boy was handed the keys of his father's shop.
d. The boy was asked to throw his hard-earned money into the well.
The main goal of volunteering is to help others. But it turns out volunteers also benefit(对……有益)from their activities. Allan Luks is one of the leaders of research on the health benefits of kindness. He led the first research which connected the emotion(情感) with physical health benefits achieved by those who regularly help others. The study that Allan Luks conducted of 3,000 volunteers has proven volunteering is good for both the body and mental health.

Anna Walker (A tour guide in Chester): Close to the English and Welsh border, the city of Chester has a long history. It's filled with buildings of historic sites, including some historic city walls in the county. For tourists who plan a visit to Chester this year, there's plenty on offer, including a new, free, self-guided tour that lines the city's four main streets. Chester's Rows are unique(独特的) in the world, which form a second row of shops above those at street level. Nobody is quite sure why they were built this way But the new tour offers an insight into their fascinating history and the shaping of Chester. |
|
Brian Clarke (A boat driver in Chester): I was born in the small village of Mancot, six miles from Chester, and once I moved here,I have simply never wanted to leave the city. The city itself has so much to offer but most of all I love the beautiful River Dee. My favorite spot in Chester is the tee-lined banks of the River Dee. I walk into work at Chester Boat every day and it's great to be able to walk through Grosvenor Park and come out at Oueens Park Bridge. Chester Boat business began in Chester over 100 years ago. I started as a boat driver in 1979 and have had a wonderful life. |
|
Katrina Kerr (An old lady in Chester): I'm a Londoner but in 1998 my husband and I moved to Chester. It was the perfect location and we really felt we had “escaped to the country". It looks different from other cities so many black and white buildings. During the summer it is busy with tourists and race-goers, and in the winter, you can enjoy comedy clubs, jazz and Folk bars. Chester is right on the border with Wales, so for centuries it has been a bit English and a bit Welsh. Now a new generation have started businesses in travel and finance(金融). And the city now feels young and buzzy. |
One of the most important moments in a parent's life is the celebration of their child's birth. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, even' close relatives aren't able to join the celebration in person: New parents in Japan have found a way to solve this problem. They are sharing the joys of welcoming a new family member with bags of rice.
These rice bags are not ordinary ones, however. Each of them is in the shape of a baby wrapped (包裹) in a blanket. This“"baby" weighs the same as the newborn at birth. There is a photo of the baby, on the front of each bag. The bags can alw relatives to imagine the feeling of holding the real' baby in their arms.
In fact, the practice of sending rice baby bags is not a new one. Naruo Ono, the owner ofa rice shop in Japan, got the idea in 2007. He was a new parent at the time. Some of his relatives lived too far away to come and see his newborn son. He then decided to send them bags of nice that looked like the baby.
The idea was not a big success then, but COVID-19 has given it another chance Ono has started receiving orders from across Japan since the pandemic began. The bags have created a new problem, though: People haven't been able to decide what to do with their lovely “rice babies" once the moment is over.
Scientists are looking for ways that we can effectively use the light and heat from the sun. One idea that has caught their imagination is solar roads. They are expected to produce clean and renewable energy.
With solar panels on the surfaces, solar roads cost more than traditional roads. However, besides the functions of traditional roods, they have the panels to receive sunlight and change it into the energy to supply power to homes, factories and street lighting. There are four layers in a solar panel:

•Base layer: It is made of insulation material and forms a good grip with the road below this layer.
•Middle layer: This is the most important layer. It holds all kinds of power lines connecting all the solar parts in the panel, like LED lights and the heating system.
•Top layer: This layer is super-strong glass. It allows the panel to hold the weight of the heaviest vehicles.
•Capping: This is the topmost layer used to offer extra protection to the solar parts in the panel. The layer must be rough enough to provide the traction for the safety of vehicles.
With the smart design, solar roads can successfully charge the vehicles on them. And the roads have inbuilt LED lights to replace the traditional rood signs and lines, which are usually painted and harmful to humans. What's more, the heating systems in the solar roads can take care of the snow and ice on the roads for drivers.
Test solar roads have been built in several countries (France, China, USA, etc.) since 2014. The first word solar road project, Metrics of Watt Way in France, was set up by a French company called Construction Colas. It was an example of low effectiveness. In the first year, it had been expected to produce around 767 kWh of energy a day, but it only produced 409 kWh. Even so, the production could increase with design improvements. Of course, more time is needed before this technology is put into use.
Solar roads may not be widely used in the near future, but they are indeed great for an environment-friendly and energy-saving world.
