Do you use Wikipedia(维基百科) to find information about people, places, things and events? Have you ever wondered who writes all the information? The website is actually run by thousands of everyday people, as well as computers that can automatically update (自动更新) certain pages. You can even write something on the page if you want to.
Of course, it means that somebody can write incorrect information on the page. That does happen sometimes, but usually somebody else corrects the information quickly.
Wikipedia has counted how many times each page has been edited (编辑) this year and one page stood out. "Deaths in 2020" was edited 18,230 times. That is likely because lots of well-known people died in 2020.
The 2020 US presidential election (总统选举) was followed by people around the world. It was also a popular page to edit on Wikipedia. The "Donald Trump" page had nearly 9,000 edits and took seconds pot. The third most-edited page had something to do with Joseph Biden, and the election itself took the fourth spot.
Pages about movies, sports, world events like COVID-19, natural disasters (灾难), musicians and artists all appeared in the top 25 most-edited list. The different pages that were edited show how people, with totally different interests are still all looking for information.

Tom was a college student. He often made excuses not to attend classes. Also, he spent much of his free timecomputer games. He never went to the library.
How time flew! At the end of the term, there wasimportant event that he was afraid of--the final exam. "What should I do?" Tom walked up and down in the room the day before the exam. He was. Suddenly heof an idea.
The next morning. Tom went into the exam room very early. He found a young manlooked so confident and took a seat next to him. "Hey!" Tom greeted. "What?" the young man asked.

When the bell rang, the young manimmediately and came to the front, saying, "It is time for the final exam! Now I will hand out the papers to all of you and collect them an hour."
Tom sat there with his mouth wide open.
The word "day" has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using "day" to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using "day" to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Because the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. At the equator day and night are sometimes the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o'clock in the morning and sets at 6 o'clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole(北极点)is tilted(倾斜的)toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.
Strong winds are starting to blow. It seems huge, dark cloud is getting bigger and bigger until it seems to be covering the whole sky. thunderstorm is getting nearer.
A few seconds pass. Then it happens! The You can find out if you remember that light travels faster than sound. Light travels at 300, 000 kliometres a second. Sound travels more slowly, at about 330 metres a second.
If you are in a car during a thunderstorm, stay there. Lightning does not usually hit a closed car.
If you cannot do that, stay in a low place. Since lightning often hits tall trees, you should not stand under a tree. If you are in a boat or swimming, get to land as soon as possible. The electricity of lightning travels through water. If you are inside a building, do not touch electrical equipment. Stay away from open windows and doors.
Even though thunderstorms can cause damage, they do more good than harm. They help the soil. Lightning causes gases to mix in the air. Millions of tons of fertilisers are formed as the less gases become part of the rain.
In spring, it is the time for the thunderstorm to happen. We can see it again.
|
A. Suddenly a bright flash of lightning hits across the darkened sky. B. These gases fall to the ground and help make our soil richer. C. You wonder how far away the storm is. D. They bring clean rain that provides water for all living things. E. If you are out-of-doors, take shelter from the storm in a building. |

I have two older brothers, Matt and Martin. They love me very much. Perhaps it is because I am the 1 child and the only sister they have.
Both Matt and Martin have thick and dark hair. They look alike (相像) with 2 short hairdos (发型) and big eyes. They are also very tan (晒黑的) because they enjoy outdoor 3. For example, Matt likes football and Martin is a tennis player. They are much taller than me and I always have to look up when I 4 to them. They both love to 5, so Mum often says that they could eat a horse.
Their personalities (性格) are very 6. Matt is very active and lively. He often takes part in club activities and gets along 7 with people. He also likes to play jokes on others, especially Martin! Sometimes Mum is not very 8 with Matt because he plays so much and does not listen to his teachers carefully when he is in class.
Martin, on the other hand (另一方面), is the quiet one. He is less active than Matt, 9 he has a really close group of friends. He also does well in his 10 because he works very hard on his studies. Mum never has to worry about Martin.
If you live in some big cities such as Shanghai or Beijing, you may see some orange bikes in the street. These bikes are from a company called Mobike. When you find the bike, you just scan(扫描) the QR Code(二维码), then you can use it. You needn't to give it back to the station, just park it everywhere.
But more people choose to drive cars and catch subways these days. Now, bike rental(租赁)services like Mobike are bringing bicycles back to peoples' life.
So they didn't want to be linked with (与……联系在一起) bicycles. Ines
Brunn, a German woman, had a bike store in Beijing. She said " I do believe changes in people's tastes will shape new thinking on bikes. "
Now, online rental services make biking much more popular, but it's still not easy to ride bikes in Chinese cities. Bikers have to ride next to cars in car lanes (车道), which can be very dangerous. This is why Beijing will build over 3200 km of new bike lanes. Traffic signs will be put up to protect bikers better.
| A. Cars usually take up bicycle lanes. B. Drivers who park on bike lanes will be punished (惩罚). C. You can use a bike through its APP on your phone. D. China used to be known as "the Kingdom of Bicycles" Chinese people were trying to be modern and push away the past. |

Robots are not something new now, but if you (遇见) them in a restaurant, you would like to watch them again and again. In fact, they are pretty new to you there.
(最近), there is a robot themed restaurant in Harbin. If you walk (穿过) the door, the robot will wave to you and say, "Earth Person, hello!(欢迎) to the Robot Restaurant." After you've placed your order with one of the robot waiters, the robots get cooking. They can do (不同的) jobs, including helping you find seats to waiting tables and cooking all kinds of dishes in the (厨房). Harbin Haohai Robot Company has studied the (技术) of robots for many years. All the robots in the restaurant were (发明) by them last year. The Engineer Liu said, "We spend five million yuan in the restaurant, and each robot (花费) over 200,000 to 300,000 yuan. With an average(平均的) cost each dinner of (在……之间) $6 and $10, we won't get the money we have paid anytime soon, but it is a great advertisement for the robot company. "
I once worked at a restaurant One night, an old pair of couple(夫妇) walked into the restaurant slowly. I quickly went to them and gave them the menu.
The man began ordering but he talked stutteringly(结结巴巴地). It was very clear that he had difficulty speaking. His wife told him what she wanted and the man kept ordering as a way to practice speaking. It took him quite a lot of time to order. At the same time his wife was sitting there and she looked so proud.
I had to say they touched me a lot. It just made me realize that love is about acceptance, tolerance and support(接受、宽容和支持). His wife could have made the order and made things easier for the man, but she didn't. Instead, she supported him and was proud to see him order by himself.
I also learned that life is difficult for us most of the time. The most important is to face the problems in life and try our best to solve them.

①A red envelope(信封) is simple a long, narrow, red envelope. Traditional red envelopes are often with gold Chinese characters, such as happiness and wealth.
②During the Chinese New Year, money is put inside red envelopes which are then handed out to younger children by their parents, grandparents, relatives, and even close neighbors and friends. At some companies, workers may also receive a year-end-bonus(奖金) inside a red envelope.
③Red envelopes are also popular gifts for birthdays and wedding(婚礼). Unlike a western greeting card, red envelopes given at the Chinese New Year are left unsigned. For birthdays or weddings, a short message, usually a four-character expression, and signature(签名)are acceptable.
④Red is a symbol of luck and good fortune(财富) in Chinese culture. That is why red envelopes are used during other celebratory events too, like a house-warming party, or to welcome the arrival of a newborn.
⑤Giving and receiving red envelopes, gifts, and even business cards is a solemn(庄重的)act. Therefore, red envelopes, gifts, and name cards are always presented with both hands and also received with both hand.
⑥The person who received a red envelope at the Chinese New Year or on his or her birthday should not open it in front of the giver. At Chinese wedding, things are difficult. At a Chinese wedding, there is a table at the entrance of the wedding hall where guests give their envelopes to people in charge(负责人)and sign their names on a large notebook. The people in charge will open the envelope right away, count the money inside, and record it next to the guests' names.
There are many ways to greet (和……打招呼) someone. Different cultures (文化) have different greetings. In the USA, people will say "Hi!" or "How are you?". (A) In Chinese culture, older people may say "Have you eaten?" to greet others. In Bhutan, people will ask "Is your body well?"
To greet someone, people use not only words but also actions. In many countries, (B) they will often shake hands. In the USA, young people, especially young men, will often fist bump (碰拳) to greet each other. And women and men may hug (拥抱) a good friend. In Japan, a bow (鞠躬) is the polite way to greet someone. In many European countries, people often greet family and friends with a kiss (亲吻) on the cheek (脸颊).
When you travel, it's nice to know the polite way to greet others. (C) But if you don't know the right greeting, a smile (微笑) is always nice.

When it comes to daily choices, we already have a lot of tasty plant "milks" to choose from, but the latest one, potato milk, is a new one. Potato milk doesn't sound like the most delicious thing in the world, neither does oat milk (燕麦奶).
If you hope to try potato milk, you'll be happy to know that you can make it yourself at home. Generally, you just boil the potato, then mix it with the water it is boiled in, strain (过滤) it and add more water until it is what you want.
The only welcome potato milk, recently has been firstly sold on the market. Although some people noticed the potato milk when it was sold, the success of this "milk" still needs time, as some people who have tried it said that it tasted so so, others thought that it tasted a little salty.
But growing potatoes needs less land than growing oats, and it requires little water. Also it has more production than most plants. The new healthy drink may have a huge hill to climb, but it certainly has a chance to become the next big thing.
The Tower of London is on the north of the Thames River. According to the history, King Edward of England had promised to give the throne to William, the Duke of Normandy. But at last he gave the throne to Harold Godwinson, his English brother-in-law.
William was quite angry about his not being the king. He sent his men to fight against the English and on October 14, 1066, the Duke's men won, and later William became the king. At the beginning, the new king wanted to protect himself and keep the wild people of London in line. So he built the Tower of London soon.
The tower was always changed by the kings of England because they wanted to add something more. So king after king built the tower adding walls and smaller towers around it. Around the year1240 King Henry III made the Tower of London his home. He whitewashed the tower, made the grounds wider to include a church, and added a great hall and other buildings. The Normans called the tower "La Tour Blanche (White Tower)".
As time went by, the addition of other smaller towers, extra buildings, walls and walkways, became the example of fortresses(堡垒), prisons, palaces and finally museums that we enjoy today.
①William was quite angry and sent his men to fight against the English.
②King Edward of England gave the throne to Harold Godwinson.
③King Henry III widened the ground and added a great hall and other buildings.
④William built the Tower of London to protect himself.

①Tracking (跟踪) apps are becoming more and more popular. A study in 2019 showed that 40% of parents in the UK were using tracking apps every day. A 2020 study found that 33% of parents in the US use tools to keep watch on their children. With tracking apps, parents feel closed to their children even when they're not at home. Although many parents want to know where their child is, some people think that tracking is bad for children. What do you think? Should parents track their children?
②Tracking apps mean that parents know where their children are. They can also set alerts(警报) for themselves, so they know when their children leave a place or are on their way home. This makes parents feel safe and relaxed. Instead of being worried while their children are out, parents can relax because they'll get alerts if their children are running late. Tracking apps also give young people a taste of independence, especially if their parents would not let them move around so freely.
③Tracking apps take away a big part of childhood. You will feel free when you go out without a parent. If young people know their parents are "watching" them, they won't have that same excitement and feeling of freedom. Children may also feel that they can't go anywhere without their parents following them. Young people may also become worried. Because this is only the beginning of parents watch their life. Parents may also become dependent on tracking apps and not learn to believe in their children. Children need to have true freedom so that they can live better.
④It's true that tracking apps are good for parents, but most children still dislike them. Whether parents track their children or not is still a big question in the future.
