A desert is a difficult place for animals to live, and some have unusual ways of making a living. The Texas lizard has a strange way to keep itself safe. When a predator(掠食动物) gets too close, blood goes out from the lizard's eyes. Then it breathes in much air to make its body look bigger. Another interesting desert animal is the javelina. To make a predator afraid and run away, the javelina bravely faces the animal. It makes a big noise with its teeth. It raises the hard hairs on its back to make itself look bigger. The javelina also gives off a strong smell as a warning when it is afraid. This smell is so strong that javelinas are also called "smelly pigs". Javelinas keep safe by staying close to their family, so there's a good chance they can make a predator change its mind!
You might think a rain forest would be easier to live in than a desert. After all, there's plenty of food and water in a rain forest. But that also means a lot of animals live there. Being able to climb trees is a useful skill in the rain forest. It allows an animal to keep away from predators. The sloth spends most of its life in the treetops. Its strong, curved claws(爪子) help it climb and hang upside down from branches. The sloth also moves very slowly. It does this so it's not noticed. The aye-aye lives only in the rain forest of Madagascar, near Africa. The aye-aye is a night animal. This helps it to stay safe from daytime predators. However, the number of the aye-aye keeps going down and they may die out. People have hunted it because they think it brings bad luck. Also, much of the rain forest in Madagascar has been cut down, which has destroyed the aye-aye's home. Today there are laws(法律) to keep people from killing it.

One day it is fine. Just before you want to go out, it suddenly starts to rain. Maybe you would feel very sad and stated complaining about the weather. But dear friends, why don't you sit down and listen to the free concert that the nature offers you? Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries to do, sometimes failure can't be avoided (避免). I think failure is not terrible, and the terrible thing is that we are afraid of it and give up hope. When we face failure, we must be confident in ourselves, draw a useful lesson from it and try our best to finish what we have decided to do. As a popular saying goes, "Failure is the mother of success."
Attitude (态度) decides everything. With an optimistic (乐观的) attitude life is easy and pleasant.. Let's smile to whatever we meet and the whole world will smile to us.
The Namib Desert is one of the hottest and driest places in the world. Not only does the temperature of the desert sand reach up to 140 degrees, but there is also very little ground water in this area. However, the Namib beetle is able to live there. How does the Namib beetle succeed in living in these terrible conditions? The beetle's shell(壳) allows it to turn fog into drinkable water!
Fog is a cloud of water drops. A few mornings of a week, fog appears across the desert floor. This is where the main water in the desert comes from. To collect the water from the fog, beetles climb to the top of the sand dunes(沙丘). They lift their special wings. The water drops down the beetle's wings and runs into its mouth.
Scientists have been thinking about how to make use of the beetle's wing scales(翅鳞) to collect water for people. Tools that collect water from fog have been around for a while and they were called fog nets. But scientists think that they could be made much more useful by adding waxy bumps(蜡状凸起物) to the design. Except for changing fog nets, scientists have invented a new type of water bottle. The inside of the water bottle is covered in bumps like the Namib beetled wing scales. These water bottles are special because they are self-filling! Would you want one of these water bottles?

The Changes in My Hometown
Great changes have taken place in my hometown. In the past, …

We spend hours, days and years of our lives in school. Imagine (想象) you could design (设计) your dream school, what would it be like? What would you be doing? We wanted to find out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is what they said:
Richard from the USA: My dream school would have a big swimming pool and two soccer fields. It would also have a cinema, a gym and a shopping centre. My school has none of these, and I think there should be more pleasant things for students to do while they are studying.
Sonia from Italy: I'd like a room where we can relax and play computer games. I'd also like to have a music room. I think there should be a place for everyone to go and relax after class.
Wu from Beijing: I think it would be great to have another day off (休息日) every week, besides the weekend. If that day was Friday or Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. How fun! I also think school should start later, at about 10 o'clock, and finish earlier.
Hannah from Australia: In my dream school, I think the teachers should give us more freedom(自由) and choice about how we study and what we study. I also think it's not necessary for us to wear school uniforms every day. I really don't like wearing it.
Life may be boring in Melbourne for people who enjoy exciting nightlife. Shops here often close at 6 p.m. and there are no places to go at night. But things were different this summer, as the Victoria Night Market recently opened!
I went to the market at 7 p.m.. The smoky smell of kebabs(烤肉串) created a nice summer atmosphere(氛围). DJs on the stage played songs and the streets were packed with people. At that time, I thought I returned to China.
I went to a stall(摊位) with bright red and orange decorations. A sign with the words "typical(典型的) Spanish" hung at the front of the stall. The dishes in front of me were confusing(困惑的), because I had never tried Spanish food before. A woman at the stall smiled, pointed at some food and said: "You can try this seafood rice. It's a very typical Spanish dish. Unlike Chinese fried rice, the rice was as orange as the stall's decorations. I tried it. I found that it was quite delicious as soon as I put it into my mouth.
I spent 50 Australian dollars in total, but I got to taste Greek meatballs, Thai noodles and a Brazilian burger. I'm glad that the Victoria Market offers so many great foods from every corner of the world!
