One morning in 2009, Larry was traveling along 165 north after delivering to one of his customers when he saw a carits bright lights on. As he got even(close), he found another vehicle upside down on the road. One more lookhe noticed fire shooting out (repeat) from under the disabled vehicle. Larry pulled over, set the brake and got hold of the fire extinguisher (灭火器). Two good bursts from the extinguisher and the fire (put) out.
The man who had his bright lights on came over and told Larry he had made a call. They then heard a woman's voice coming from the damaged vehicle. (approach) the vehicle, they saw that a woman was trying to get out of the broken window. They told her to stay still, but she thought the car was going to explode. It is not as simple as opening the door and hitting the track in winter. There are a few things you can do to ensure you are getting the most out of your run, and, importantly, not doing more harm than good.
Warm up; cool down.
Your muscles need some time to warm up when it's cold, so take it easy when you set off and do a few stretches (伸展) once you're finished.
Drink water.
You might not feel hot, but that's because sweat evaporates (蒸发) more quickly into the chilly, dry air. So be sure to drink water before, during and after cold-weather workouts. A belt bottle conveniently attaches to your waist so you don't have to carry it and can have a drink whenever you feel like it.
Running in cotton is a bad idea. Wear thin, breathable layers of synthetic (合成的) clothing that help protect you from the wind and snow, but still let out heat and moisture (水分). Thirty percent of your body heat escapes through your hands and forty percent through your head. Wear a hat, or beanie (无檐小便帽), and gloves so your circulatory system can distribute warm blood to the rest of your body.
Run into the wind.
Obviously, it will be an easier passage home with some extra help from Mother Nature. But, more importantly, you won't have the wind in your face for the second half of your run, when you are more likely to be sweating and catch a chill.
|
A. Dress right. B. Keep warm. C. Don't go too fast, too soon. D. Start and finish in the same way. E. Don't wait to drink water until you feel thirsty. F. Head out into the wind and come home with it at your back. G. On really cold days, wear a mask or scarf over your mouth to protect your face. |

Mike Flint was Buffett's airplane pilot(飞行员). Flint had also flown four US Presidents, so we can safely say he was good at his job. According to Flint, he was talking about his career(事业) priorities (优先事项) with Buffett when he asked him to go through a 3-step exercise.
STEP 1: Write down his top 25 career goals(目标). So, Flint took some time and wrote them down.
STEP 2: Review his list and circle his top 5 goals. Again, Flint took some time, made his way through the list, and at last decided on his 5 most important goals.
STEP 3: At this point, Flint had two lists. The 5 items he had circled were on List A and the 20 items he had not circled were on List B.
Flint said that he would start working on his top 5 goals right away. And then Buffett asked him about the second list, "And what about the ones you didn't circle?"
Flint replied, "Well, the top 5 are my primary focus (焦点), but the other 20 come in a close second. I still plan to give them my efforts."
Buffett said, "No. You've got it wrong. Everything you didn't circle just became your Avoid-At-All-Cost list. These things get no efforts from you until you've succeeded with your top 5."
This is why Buffett's strategy (策略) is great. Items 6 through 25 are things you care about. So you can't help paying attention to them. And then you get 20 distractions (分心的事物) to stop you from focusing on(集中) your top 5 goals. Spending time on secondary priorities is the reason you have 20 half-finished goals instead of 5 completed ones. So force yourself to focus. The most dangerous distractions are the ones you love, but that don't love you back.
A. getting 20 half-finished goals is useful too
B. we should break away from distractions decidedly
C. it's impossible for us to finish two tasks at a time
D. secondary priorities will prevent us from succeeding
Popular culture has a strong influence on language. Expressions that come from movies and television shows can be especially powerful.
When we use expressions that come from a movie or television shared by others, it can create a feeling of closeness with them. If someone says a line(台词) from one of your favorite movies, it is kind of like you both belong to the same club.
English has many such phrases that have found their way into common usage. Today we talk about a water-based phrase and useful adjectives that relate to it. In the movie Finding Nemo, Dory is a friendly, helpful, optimistic fish. She becomes friends with Marlin, a clown fish who has just lost his only son. Dory offers to help Marlin find Nemo. The search is very difficult. Along the way, they face bloodthirsty sharks.
Every time Marlin feels like giving up, Dory says, "Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. "With these words, Dory is telling her friend that he should not give up.
At some point, we all face a difficult situation. We may feel frightened, sad or just overwhelmed. And we may want to give up. But then a friend says, "Just keep swimming," and it gives us the hope we need to reach our goal.
Another expression, to keep your head above water, expresses a similar message.
Don't drown. Take action to survive, even if that is all you can do.
English has some great adjectives to describe people and things that do not give up. One is resilient. Resilient people do not give up in the face of adversity(逆境). "Resilient" can refer to things, also. For example, a tree that keeps growing even after lightning strikes itcould be called a resilient tree. Another adjective to describe someone who will not give up is indefatigable. So, would I say "just keep swimming" in a very serious situation or to a very serious co-worker who I don't know well? Probably not. But we have other words of encouragement. You can say "Hang in there!" or "Don't give up!" When we use expressions
or phrases from movies or television shows, it is a way of sharing culture with another.
B . influences of popular culture on language
C . ways to encourage people in difficult situations
D . words and phrases to express "do not give up"

Sound like a list of your homework for the next few nights—or maybe even just for tonight? It's your teachers' way of evaluating how much you understand what's going on in class. And it helps strengthen important concepts.
It's inviting to start with the easy things to get them out of the way. However, you'll have the most energy and focus when you begin, so it's best to use this mental power on the subjects that are most challenging. Later, when you're more tired, you can focus on the simpler things. If you get stuck on a problem, try to figure it out as well as you can—but don't spend too much time on it because this can mess up your homework schedule for the rest of the night. But don't pick someone whom you'll be up all night chatting with, or you'll never get it done!
Most people's attention spans(一段时间) aren't very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.
Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time. Be sure to put it safely away in your backpack—there's nothing worse than having a completed assignment that you can't find the next morning or that gets ruined by a careless brother or sister. Now you're free to hang out.
A. In conclusion, no one is expected to stay long, and people have very different learning styles.
B. But if you're really concentrating, wait until it's a good time to stop.
C. If you need to, ask an adult for help or call or email a classmate for advice.
D. Luckily, you can do a few things to do less homework.
E. When you start your homework, deal with the hardest tasks first.
F. And no teacher still believes that “chewed by the dog” line—even when it's true!
G. Homework is a major part of going to school.

Next time you hear a funny joke you’d better not laugh too hard. According to a paper published by the British Medical Journal, laughter isn’t always the best medicine. Sometimes it$来&源:ziyuanku.com
can even be harmful. Professor Robin Ferner from the University of Birmingham, one of the authors of the study, found that bad things could happen to people who laughed too much. He says: “We found people with heartbeat problems which had stopped their heart, we found people who had fainted(昏倒), and we found people who had dislocated their jaws or burst their lungs.”
It seems that laughing can be no laughing matter. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Professor Ferner says there are benefits to laughing when you want to lose weight, for example. Yes, that’s right: laugh and be slimmer! Professor Ferner explains that: “You use energy when you laugh, you move your diaphragm(横膈膜), you expand your lungs, and both those things can be helpful.”
According to the research, laughing for a quarter of an hour can burn up to 40 calories, and if you laughed all day you’d use up about 2,000 calories, which is what most people consume in a day. But don’t do that or you might end up with a painful jaw. Ouch! Or you might find people looking at you in a funny way.
But I don’t want to finish this article leaving you feeling desperate. Laughter comes naturally for most of us. Babies begin to laugh at around 3-6 months. So give in to your sense of humour and keep smiling. Life is short anyway.
