(2019·厦门一中高三模拟)Although it is less often read than such Wells' novels as The War of the Worlds, the basic story of The Island of Dr  Moreau is very wellknown through several extremely loose film adaptations (改编). Prendick, a British scientist, has an accident at sea—and by chance finds himself on a mysterious island where Dr  Moreau and his assistant Montgomery are engaged in strange experiments of turning animals into humans.

Wells was a social reformer, and his novels reflected (反映) his thoughts and theories about human society. Much of Wells' writing concerns (either directly or indirectly) social class, but Moreau deals with the thennewly advanced theory of evolution (进化)—and then works to relate how that theory influences man's belief in God. Wells sometimes mentioned this in his novels, but nowhere in his work is this line of thought more clearly and specifically seen than here.

Sometimes Wells tries to influence his readers strongly, while on other occasions, he does it gently. But in The Island of  Dr Moreau, Wells achieves a perfect balance of the two extremes. It is an impressive achievement, and in this sense I consider Moreau possibly the best of Wells' works. The novel is as interesting for the story it tells as it is for its themes that are still very important today.

Moreau is not as horrific as Wells' many other novels—he often included horror and cruelty in his science fiction. Still, this is not a book that you can read and then put away: it stays in your mind in a most disturbing way. Strongly recommended.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

There are several reasons why school uniforms are good idea. First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular group. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody 【1】 (have) to worry about fashion(时尚). Everybody wears【2】 same style of clothes. Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways, A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth 【3】gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or 【4】 (cycle) to school on dark mornings, car drivers can 【5】 (easy) see them.
But can uniforms help improve school standards? The answer 【6】 this question is not clear. One study in America found that students' grades 【7】 (improve) a little after the school introduced uniforms. But some students didn't want 【8】 (wear) the uniform. Other American studies showed no 【9】(connect) between uniforms and school performance.
School uniforms are 【10】 (tradition) in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them. Some very good schools don't have a uniform policy. However, uniforms are still popular. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.
Tolerance means tolerating or pulling up with differences.
【1】This concept means different things to different people, but it is when something is disagreeable that tolerance is expected, and in more politically correct cultures, demanded.
There are many different ways to show tolerance. A person might fully disagree with other on any issue, while at the same respecting those with different opinions and treat them with dignity【2】.
One problem is the fact this respect is sometimes one-sided. 【3】, but some supporters feel reasonable in labeling those who disagree with hateful terms, and vice versa.People on both sides of an issue must be tolerant of each other.
【4】 ,It does not mean that a person has to accept actions or ideas that are against his or her values or beliefs. it means that each person agrees to respect the other's right to his or her feelings on the matter. When both parties have expressed their opinions, and it is obvious that neither is likely to change position, agreeing to disagree is often the ideal outcome.
Some degree of tolerance is necessary in any civilized society.【5】.It goes against human nature. Putting up with differences is a virtue that requires honest effort on the part of every person. It takes time to develop.
A.Therefore, both parties should change their opinions if necessary.
B. It is widely accepted that tolerance is a critical step towards a peaceful world.
C.It refers to showing respect for the race, religion and opinions of other people.
D. Disagreement alone does not equal intolerance.
E. However, it is not realistic to believe that all people can achieve it completely on every issue.
F.Those who disagree with a particular issue must respect the opinions of those who support it.
G. When it comes to controversial issues, tolerance may also represent a let's agree to disagree attitude.

Endless queues and long waits at the ticket inspection desks at China’s major train stations were signature of the Spring Festival travel rush before this year. Every year, as the country’s biggest national holiday unfolded a huge flow of travelers would leave staff at the check-in desks facing a dilemma.
But with the installment (安装) of artificial intelligence (AI) in dozens of train stations this year, including a facial recognition system which is able to process passenger identification within five seconds and therefore speed up the waiting process, busy scenes started to become something of the past.
When a passenger approaches the camera inside the facial recognition system at the station, it scans his face and then quickly compares it with the photograph shown on his identification card in real time. If the information matches, the barrier gates will open and allow the passenger to go through.
Such use of facial recognition technology is in line with discussions heard at the recent two sessions meeting, a key annual political event, which focused on the widespread application of a security network named Tianwang (“Sky Net” in English) currently being used by China’s public security department.
The network, according to reports by the People Daily, has the potential to recognize the facial features of anyone in the world and match them on the spot with photographs on a database of criminal suspects. In fact, it can analyze photographic identity so quickly that it can scan every single Chinese face on the planet in just one second, and it would only take two seconds to scan every face in the world, with an accuracy rate of up to 99.8 percent.
Those are just two examples that highlight the development of Chinese visual AI technology, which industry insiders predict could contribute to powerful growth in the global technology sector this year.

When I was a boy there were no smart phones. Computers were something you saw on STAR TREK(星际航行),and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my house were the nature ready-made playgrounds.
I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake and slowly walking around it. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old, one-lane, dirt road that I had never seen before. I immediately set out to travel it. It was full of holes and muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear to turn around and head back home but I was stubborn and even a bit stupid, so I walked on.
The dirt road give way to a rock one and then a paved one, yet there was still neither a car nor a house in sight. My legs were getting tired. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road in the dark of night, but I was sure it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve(弯曲处) and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. My heart leapt up! I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. I knew the way home! It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.
I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said, “All roads lead Home.” This is true. In this life all roads no matter what their twists(弯曲) and turns are can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on Earth. They can lead us to our homes in our heart, if we can insist.
【1】Why was the author never bored when he was a boy?
A. Because there was still a TV.
B. Because he liked hiking alone.
C. Because there were so many playgrounds built for him.
D. Because he had so many places around his house to play.
【2】What made the author decide to take the old road?
A. Seeing it before.
B. That it was a muddy road.
C. Trying a new and special experience.
D. That it had deep woods on both sides.
【3】How did the author feel when he saw a known house in the distance?
A. Excited. B. Frightened.
C. Touched. D. Desperate.
【4】Why did the author mention the sign?
A. To share a famous saying with readers.
B. To introduce what he wanted to say.
C. To explain the function of the sign.
D. To prove the significance of the sign.

(2018·全国卷Ⅱ)Many of us love July because it's ________ month when nature's berries and stone fruits are in abundance.

Babies’main food is rice cereal. But it is often poisoned. Studies have found that many brands contain measurable amounts of inorganic arsenic(无机砷),the most poisonous kind. It's not just nice: an August 2018 study tested 50 foods made for babies. including organic and nonorganic brands such as Gerber, Earths Best, and other popular labels, and found evidence of at least one dangerous heavy metal in every product. Fifteen of the 50 contained enough contaminants(污染物)to pose potential health risks to a child eating one serving or less a day.
Heavy metals can damage cognitive(认知的 )development in children, who are especially at risk because of their smaller size. Inorganic arsenic in drinking water has been found to lower the IQ scores of children by five to six ills. And as heavy metals accumulate in the body over time. they can raise the risk of cancer, diabetes and other physical conditions. Of course, finding you’re your favorite brand is contaminated is not a reason to panic. Low levels of exposure for short periods are unlikely to cause serious effects, but parents should focus on reducing the overall levels of these poisonous substances in their children's total diet to limit harm.
Heavy metals occur naturally on Earth and are present in soil and water. But pesticides(杀虫剂), mining and pollution increase their concentrations, and farming and food manufacturing processes can contribute even more.
Food makers are clearly of keeping baby food poison-free: roughly a third of the tested products did not contain worrisome metal levels. Some companies are already trying to look into the sources of contamination in their products and try to reduce them. More companies should follow. But the best chance of real change will come with laws. Currently there are no U. S rules on acceptable levels of heavy metals in baby foods.
The government and the food industry should unite to deal with the serious threat to our children.
【1】What did the August 2018 study find?
A. Fifteen of the 50 food brands contained contaminants
B. All organic food brands contained some inorganic arsenic.
C. Earth’s Best proved to be a poison-free baby food brand.
D. All tested products were contaminated with heavy metals.
【2】According to the second paragraph, inorganic arsenic in drinking water has a bad effect on children's_____
A. intelligence B. behavior C. sight D. emotion
【3】In the fourth paragraph, the writer indicates that_____
A. food storage is a major source of metal contamination in the food products
B. many food makers haven't taken enough safety steps to reduce metal levels
C. food makers should figure out the sources of contamination in their products
D. food companies must be banned from producing foods containing heavy metals
【4】According to the writer, which of the following is the vital step to make a real difference to the worrying situation?
A. Stepping up baby food tests. B. Listing harmful heavy metals
C. Making out relevant regulations D. Punishing food law breakers.
