Time for Kids (TFK) gets the great news on the coolest toys for 2014 at the 111th American International Toy Fair.
What’s four days long, bigger than seven football fields, and filled with thousands of toys? It’s Toy Fair 2014!
Each year, hundreds of toy companies from across the country come together in New York City. All kinds of products are shown as a way to know what’s to come in the new year. This year’s trends (款式) include oversize toys. “In 2014, everything is really big and really out there,” says Adrienne Appell, a toy-trends expert.
Toy Fair is the largest toy trade show in the Western Hemisphere (西半球). Toy-store buyers go to the event to decide which toys they may want to sell during the holiday season. Members of the media, like TFK, go to the fair to report back on all the cool trends. Unfortunately, Toy Fair is not open to the public.
This year’s Toy Fair was the biggest in its 111-year history. More than 1,000 toy companies showed products from simple card games to high-tech robots. “Larger Than Life” was a Toy Fair favorite. This trend is all about big toys with a big play value.
Though it is all fun and games at Toy Fair, we saw lots of products making a push towards education, with STEAM. That stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. This trend includes word games. And of course, we saw some super cool, high-tech games. “Technology is always going to influence toys,” says Appell. “This year we saw lots of 3D games, and robots.”

Unlike many surfers who sought the perfect wave, my interests always lay beneath the sea' s surface in a world I could only imagine and dream of.When I was twelve, I made my first adventures in the deep.Later I would learn how to dive, expanding my world of exploration many times over.
Perhaps the greatest turning point in my life came when I was in high school and I wrote a letter to the famous Scripps Oceanographic Institution, asking how I might learn more about the sea.A kind scientist answered my letter and told me how to apply to Scripps for a summer scholarship, which I received.During one of their courses that summer, I met Dr.Robert Norris, a marine geologist. He loved the sea almost as much as I did.Soon he suggested I consider his school, the University of California, for my study. One year later I became a member of the freshman class.
Now my love affair with the sea became a serious endeavor. If I wanted to be an undersea explorer, I needed to learn as much as I could about the laws of the physical world that controlled the environment I wanted to enter. The undersea world is not our natural world. It is unforgiving to those who make mistakes. At its greatest depths the water temperature is near freezing, the pressure is eight tons per square inch, and it is totally dark.It is easy to get lost in such a world.I needed to learn a lot about geography, navigation, geology, biology, and many other things.
I decided another important thing for me to do was to join the U.S.Navy.If I was going to be an undersea explorer, I would have to lead men and women on dangerous adventures where they might get hurt, and I didn't want that to happen.
In the Navy I learned discipline, organization, and how to motivate and lead people on adventures so that we could explore the wonders of the deep.
Finally, the time came to put all that I had learned to use, to go forth with a team of men and women and explore ?an adventure I am still on and hope to be on for many years to come.

Universities in the UK are leading the way in maths, English, history and art, according to annual rankings. Following analysis of subject strength at world institutions, major global league tables have revealed that UK universities provide the best courses in eight of the 42 subjects analyzed.
Four universities feature in the top placed rankings, including the University of Oxford, which leads in four subjects, and the University of Cambridge, which leads three. The Royal College of Art, which was given a major boost last week by George Osborne, the Chancellor, with £54 million in funding for its new campus in Battersea, is ranked as the world’s best university for art and design, while the Institute of Education University College London retains its status as world-leading for education.
However, the rankings were dominated by US universities, with Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topping the tables in 24 subjects between them.
Published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), researchers garnered the opinions of 76,798 academics and 44,426 employers to inform the results, alongside the analysis of 28.5 million research papers.
Results of the research saw UK universities secure eight first place rankings, 16 second-place rankings and 21 third-place rankings, with increases in both academic and employer reputation.
Commenting on the rankings, Ben Sowter, head of the QS Intelligence Unit, said: "Though the US and UK remain dominant, our most inclusive rankings ever show that excellence can be found in an ever-increasing number of places. “Nations like Austria, South Africa, Finland, Brazil, China, and Sweden can be found in the top ten of our tables. Every time Lionel Messi breaks a record, it seems appropriate to compare him to the legends that came before him.
In 2012, he rewrote soccer history on multiple occasions, and his latest record came when he scored his 86th goal of the calendar year, breaking Gerd Muller’s previous mark, before wrapping up the year with 91 goals.
All statistics indicate that Messi is currently the best player in the world, and that he will go down in history as the top footballer of his generation. But when he is judged against all-time greats like Pele and Diego Maradona, he still has work to do.
We don’t know whether the Barcelona striker will have another year in which he records more than 90 goals, but he must still sustain(维持)a similar level of production for the next several seasons.
Messi has already taken part in three of Barcelona’s victorious Champions League(冠军联赛)campaigns, and he played an important role in two of them. In order to firmly establish himself as the greatest club football player in history, he must win the tournament a few more times.
Most importantly, the Argentine(阿根廷人)needs to win on the international stage. Regardless of what Messi does for Barcelona, his legacy will be incomplete if he cannot win the World Cup with Argentina.
Both Pele and Maradona led their countries to the top of international soccer during their careers, and Messi’s performances for his country have been severely disappointing.
While he was still a teenager in 2006 —and his lackluster(平淡的)showing is excusable due to his youth—he cannot brush off the disappointment that characterized Argentina’s performance in 2010.
But the 4-0 loss to Germany in the 2010 World Cup Quarter Final seems to have sparked Messi. He scored 12 times for Argentina last year, and the next World Cup could finally be Messi’s breakout performance in blue and white stripes.
Due to all of his accomplishments, it is easy to forget that the extraordinary footballer is just 25 years old. If he can avoid injury or lengthy slumps(低潮状态)until his speed and skills start to decline due to age, he may continue to break records and win trophies.
56. What will Messi have to do in order to be complete in his soccer career?
A. He must win the World Cup with Argentina.
B. He must win the tournament a few more times.
C. He must defeat Pele and Maradona.
D. He must avoid injury or lengthy slumps.
57. How was Messi’s performance in 2010 World cup?
A. Excellent B. Inspiring C. Disappointing D. Normal.
58. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Messi has firmly established himself as the greatest club soccer player in history.
B. Messi will try his best to win the next World Cup with Argentina.
C. Messi can avoid injury and lengthy slumps to break records and win trophies.
D. Pele and Maradona led their countries to the top of international soccer during their careers.
59. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Lionel Messi, the Best Soccer Player of All Time ?
B. Lionel Messi, the Greatest Soccer Player in History.
C. Barcelona and Lionel Messi.
D. World Cup and Lionel Messi.
While going through life with the pursuit of money on our mind, we're often told that money can't buy happiness. But what truth is there in the saying? Is there a relation between money and happiness? 36
Humans are very sensitive to change. When we get a rise, we really enjoy it. But some studies have shown that in North America, additional income beyond 75,000 dollars a year stops impacting day-to-day happiness. 37 They often end up spending all the money, going into debt, and experience ruined social relationships.
So surely money can't really buy happiness. Well, recent studies suggest that the problem may actually be in the way that we spend money. 38 Studies show that people who spend their money on others feel happier. As for the people who spend money on themselves, their happiness is unchanged.
39 0ne experiment showed that instead of an organization writing a large check to a charity, dividing the amount up among employees, allowing them to contribute to a charity of their choice, increased their job satisfaction. Similarly, individuals that spend money on each other, as opposed to themselves, not only increase job satisfaction, but improve the team performance.
40 Interestingly, the specific way money is spent on others isn't important. Spending something on others is the important aspect of increasing your happiness.
A. The same principle has been tested on teams and organizations as well.
B. Money has more effect on the vast majority of people in the long run.
C. Instead of buying things for yourself, try giving some of it to other people and see how you feel.
D. And if so, how can we use it to our advantage?
E. Almost everywhere we look in the world, we see that giving money to others is positively related to happiness,
F. And while you're saving up for these greatest experiences, don't forget the daily joys in life.
G. In fact, people who win a lottery often report becoming extremely unhappy.
—Did any signs come up before the earthquake?
—Yes. Unusual things all those days, for example, a number of animals got out their homes.

What is the hottest word of 2008 in China? Google, the world’s top search engine, gave its list at the end of this year.“Shanzhai”, a Chinese term, which literally refers to the mountain strongholds of bandits(强盗) but has changed to mean “copycatting(复制)”, came at the top.
It’s true that “Shanzhai” is everywhere. There are “Shanzhai” phones called “Nakia” and “Anycoll”.There are “Shanzhai” stars who dress and act like celebrities such as Jay Zhou. There are “Shanzhai” versions of movies, songs and TV programs. And recently a crowd of youths has drawn eyes from around the country preparing for the amateur Spring Festival gala(联欢会), in which ordinary people are invited to show their work.“I want to watch the amateur gala on Spring Festival eve,” said 19-year-old Fan Xiaojie in Wuhan.“The performers will express themselves in a bolder and funnier way than those on CCTV.”
“‘Shanzhai’ is a way for young people to have their voices heard in a world ruled by authorities,” said Gu Haibin, a sociologist from Remin University.Made cheaply and easily, “Shanzhai” versions gave ordinary people an opportunity to express themselves.Gu said the copycat trend also promotes a DIY( do it yourself) attitude.“With the spread of the Internet, it has become easier to publish works and get an access to technology. This has made DIY more possible.”
Li Xinlian, a psychologist in Beijing, thought about why “Shanzhai” is getting popular at this particular time.“It meets people’s need to release, especially after this year’s many gloomy events, such as the snowstorm, earthquake and financial crisis,” said Li.“The ‘Shanzhai’ spirit makes fun of authorities and of ourselves. It provides a release.”
However, experts remind that copycat works can break copyright laws. The law allows copying the format of a copy-righted work, but not the content.Lyrics or melody(词曲) of a song are also protected from commercial uses.
