Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-confidence. Your level of self-confidence is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-confidence are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are always victims. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify(确定) the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.
In all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it. You are on the road to success.

Move over Psy. There’s a new viral music video on the Internet that’s getting millions of people dancing and laughing. Psy is a singer who created Gagnam Style, a music video which featured a catchy tune and interesting dance.
The new music video called The Fox (What does the fox say?) has recently gone viral. At 123 000 000 views, it may even catch up to Gagnam Style. The video asks the question, “What does the fox say?” It’s a good question. And it seems, at least according to the music video, there is no good answer.
Actors in the video dress up like the animals they’re singing about. One of the brothers dresses up like a fox. There is a surprising and silly dance in the video that takes the viewer a bit off-guard. The video’s appeal is the song’s simple rhythm and catchy chorus (副歌).
The makers of the video never expected the video to do well or even to be taken seriously. In fact, it started out as a joke. The song was written by two brothers from Norway, Vegard and Bard Ylvis Ker. The brothers have their own late-night talk show in Norway. They thought the video would be so bad that it would give them something to talk about on their show.
On their website, they say the video was “supposed to entertain a few Norwegians for three minutes — and that’s all.” But people started loving it. Some people say that once you listen to the delightfully silly song, you want to listen to it again and again.
The brothers have
been guests on some major North American talk shows. They say they’re happy about the success of their video, but they know that tomorrow something else could come along and be even bigger.

Years ago, I celebrated my 40th with a large group of friends at a restaurant. As I stood on the sidewalk with my friends, a homeless man approached me and asked for money. I told him that I didn’t have any cash. He quietly smiled (56)_______ me, and moved on.
While (57)______ homeless man was still in earshot range, a friend who was just arriving called out, "Happy Birthday, Marc!" Upon (58)______ (hear) this, the man turned and asked, "Hey man, is it your Birthday?" "Yes, it is, " I said. He walked back to me, with a huge smile on his face, and said, ”Happy Birthday, man!”I was (59)______(co
mplete) unprepared for what happened next: the man reached into his pocket, pulled out a dollar bill, and gave it to me, saying, "Here man! Take this, Happy Birthday!"
Although I was deeply moved by this act of generosity, accepting money from a homeless man was not within my comfort zone, so my (60)______(respond)was, "Thanks! Sure, we've all heard that we should get more sleep. The realities of life often make it become "we should get more sleep later." 36 The result is that you wake up the next day feeling like a role of The Walking Dead. Here are four ways you can adjust your biology in order to pay less for staying up.
● Move around.
Exercising before bed is a sure way to keep awake. That's why you shouldn't do it when you want to go to sleep, and it is also why hitting the gym, or even some fast push-ups can tell your body that it's not time for bed. Being physically exhausted isn't fun when you are trying to stay up late. 37
● Eat more protein.
Few people think about the fact that the brain and body use a lot more energy when we're awake. If you are pulling an all-nighter, you're going to need a lot more food than you are used to eating. 38 To stay awake, plan to eat larger meals than normal and to eat them more frequently.
● Drink the right stuff.
It's tempting (诱人) to switch to sugary caffeine drinks like Red Bull, but the sugar will lead to a crash. Instead, if you want to use caffeine, drink early in the evening so it'll wear off by the time you want to sleep.
39 Don't make it worse by drinking sugar.
● 40
Turn the lights down at night because bright lights keep you awake. For three or four hours after you're exposed to bright white light, your body won't make melatonin, a must for deep sleep. You will sleep better if you turn the lights a little bit down.
A. Turn the lights off.
B. Avoid bright lights.
C. Just do enough to get energetic.
D. And your body can never bear something like that.
E. Your brain can use up to 25 percent of your total calories.
F. When you stay up late, your blood sugar becomes abnormal.
G. There is either more work to be done, or more fun to be had, or both.

This time last year I entered two long-distance mass-participation swimming events, including the Jubilee River 10 km swim. At the last minute, just before both swims, I decided to pull out. The reality is, I live in fear of coming last.
Last year, before the two events, I realized that I couldn’t deal with coming last. I had looked at the swim times of those who had completed the previous year and calculated that, at my current swim pace, I would probably have come last. I just couldn’t face it. But when next year came around, I decided to enter those same events again.
For a few months, I trained hard, but I didn’t get any faster. Then it was June 5, the day of the Jubilee River 10 km. The event started at 9:30 am, and the swimmers were anxious and eager to start. As I swam along, the river was quiet and clean and everything was peaceful. The sun shone, Meadows (草地)rolled by and every now and then someone would wave at the scene unfolding in the water.
As the day wore on, somehow I didn’t mind that, predictably, almost everyone was ahead. There were at least some swimmers still near me, and although we shared the same river we quietly occupied our own spaces. As I concentrated on doing my own thing, watching the sky, the bank, the other swimming caps passing or not passing, I realized I was enjoying myself.
In the end, four hours and 29 minutes after I’d started, I staggered (摇摇晃晃地走)out of the water and was greeted with a smile and a “well done” from the race organizer. I glanced back over my shoulder toward the water and noticed that there were a small handful of swimmers who were still to finish, behind me, out of a field of around 300 swimmers. But it didn’t matter. I was just relieved, proud and happy to finish.
As I drove away, my thoughts turned to my next long race of the season and how much I was looking forward to it, my fears of coming last gently receding(渐渐远去).
32. The author intended to quit swimming mainly because _______.

A. She took pride in leaving all the other swimmers behind
B. She was proud that she was not the last one in the race

D. She was proud to be praised by the organizer
35. It can be inferred from the end that the author is likely to _______.
A. participate in another race without any hesitation
B. analyze the reason why she failed in the race

Howling is a behavior commonly observed among a wolf pack.As pack animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling as an important means of communication among each other. There are different explanations of a wolf’s howl and it appears that there may be more to discover.
One theory is that wolves howl to bond better together. It’s almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together.Perhaps something similar to people feeling a sense of involvement with each other when singing a song together .But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H.Harrington, a professor who studies wolf behavior.
Indeed, there have been times when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a chorus, and the next, quarreling among each other. It appears that usually the lowest-ranking members of the pack may actually be “punished” for joining in the chorus at times. So is howling a way to strengthen a social bond or just a way to reconfirm status among its members? ——Why do wolves howl for sure?
What is clear, however, is that howling is often used among packmates to locate each other.Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that wolves may separate from one another at times. When this happens, howling appears to be an excellent means of gathering.
Howling, interestingly, is a contagious behavior. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to occur in the morning, as if wolves were doing some sort of “roll call” where wolves all howl together to report their presence.
68. What is the possible similarity between wolves’ howling together and human’s singing in chorus?
A.The act of calling each other.
B.The sense of accomplishment.
C.The act of hunting for something.
D.The sense of belonging to a group.
69. Why does Harrington think the “social bond” theory may be wrong?
A.Wolves separate from each other after howling.
B.Wolves tend to protect their hunting grounds.
C.Wolves sometimes have quarrels after howling together.
D.Wolves of low rank are encouraged to join in the chorus.
70. Researchers are sure that wolves often howl to______.
A.show their ranks B.find their companions
C.report the missing ones D.express their loneliness
71. “Howling… is a contagious behavior”(in the last paragraph)means_______.
A.howling is a signal for hunting
B.howling is a way of communication
C.howling often occurs in the morning
D.howling spreads from one to another

Given the tradition of students bringing apples to their teachers, it somehow seems fitting that an old apple barn(谷仓)will find a new life as a one-room schoolhouse. And it is just as fitting that a retired schoolteacher will become the caretaker of that historic treasure.
My friend Velma,a teacher for more than 30 years, has been retired for some time now, but that doesn’t stop her giving history lessons at the old Englewood School, located on her family’s California farm. The lovingly restored building was constructed around 1850 as a home for a woodsman and later was used as an apple barn. Then, in 1870 it began a new life as a schoolhouse.
Originally located in the nearby Englewood meadow, it was now moved its current site in 1978 by Velma's late husband and his brother, Robert and Richard, who thought it would help keep Velma busy in retirement. No nails had been used in the original construction, so each piece of wood had to be carefully marked and the building was reassembled(重装)on its new site. The brothers worked with much care and hard work to ensure a perfect fit of mitered(斜接的)comers. After the relocation.Velma and her family furnished the school with some of its original desks. They also added a collection of schoolbooks, the oldest dating back to 1845.
Nowadays Velma gives tours to local schoolchildren and other groups, who learn what it was like to attend school back in the good old days. She has kids ring the school bell, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing “Good Morning to You” as they might have done in days gone by.Then, with twinkling eyes and much enthusiasm, she tells the history of the school, and gives a short sample lesson.
33.What was the Englewood School used as before it began a new life in 1870.
A.a lady’s house B.a schoolhouse C.an apple barn D.a restroom.
34.Which word can best describe the school’s being relocated?
A.Challenging B.Refreshing C.fashionable D.Inspiring
35.Which can serve as the best title of the passage?
A.The Good Old Days in the Schoolhouse
B.A Mysterious Building with a Long History
C.A Teacher Devoted to Restoring Old Buildings
D.A Historic One-room Schoolhouse
