About 10 years ago I was having my annual holiday party, and my niece had come with her new MBA boyfriend. As he looked around the room,he noted that my employees seemed happy. Then,I asked him how he thought I did that.“I’m sure you treat them well,” he replied.“That’s half of it,”I said.“Do you know what the other half is?”
He didn’t have the answer. So what is the answer?I fired the unhappy people.People usually laugh at this point.I wish I were joking.I’m not.I have learned the long, hard and frustrating way that as a manager you cannot make everyone happy.Good management requires training, consulting and patience.
Don’t get me wrong. This doesn’t happen a lot. There’s no joy in the act of firing someone. And it’s not always the employee’s fault—there are many bad bosses out there. And sometimes people who would be great employees somewhere else just don’t fit your company.I don’t have a PhD,an MBA,or even an economics degree. What I do have is a happy company. Now I know some people argue that business is about making money, and not everyone has to be happy.Everyone has a right to his or her opinion. When you own a company, you also have the right to surround yourself with the people you choose.
All in all,I had a good day today. Not because I got a big order or great financial reports.I have wonderful people working for me.They care. They are committed. They understand the whole customer-staff-company triangle, where all of the legs support each other.
If you read books on great companies, they usually leave out a dirty little secret. It doesn’t make for good public relations. What is also true is that it’s hard to build a great company with the wrong people. When you have the right people, business is much easier.I know because I have tried it.

B.Because they were optimistic people and happy all the time.
C.Because the author had happy people working for him and treated them well.
D.Because everyone had to pretend to be happy in order not to be fired.
27.If one wants to make his company to be a great one,he should ________.
A.enjoy firing his unhappy employees
B.believe business is only about making money
C.employ good employees who are fit for his company
D.follow the books on great companies

A.The author managed his company very well.
B.The man had been in love with the author’s niece for long before he came to the party.

Most people give little thought to the pens they write with, especially since the printers in modern homes and offices mean that very 1 things are handwritten. All too often, people buy a pen based only on 2 , and wonder why they are not satisfied once they begin to use it. However, buying a pen that you'll enjoy is not 3 if you keep the following in mind.
First of all, a pen should fit 4 in your hand and be easy to use. The thickness of the pen is the most important characteristic 5 comfort. Having a small hand and thick fingers, you may be comfortable with a thin pen. If you have a 6 hand and thicker fingers, you may 7 a fatter pen. The length of a pen can also influence comfort. A pen that is too 8 can easily feel top-heavy and unstable.
Then, the writing point of the pen should 9 the ink to flow evenly(均匀地) while the pen remains in touch with the paper. This will make it possible for you to create a 10 line of writing. The point should also be sensitive enough to 11 ink from running when the pen is lifted. A point that does not block the 12 may leave drops of ink,as you pick the pen up and put it down again.
13 , the pen should make a thick, dark line. Fine-line pens may make up for 14 handwriting, but fine(very thin or narrow), delicate lines do not attract 15 next to printed text, as, for example, a signature on a printed letter. A broader line, on the other hand, gives an impression of confidence and authority.

Dyslexia is a problem that restricts the ability to recognize words and connect sounds with letters when people read. People with this learning disorder may also have problems when they write. Dyslexia is not related to eyesight or intelligence. The problem involves areas of the brain that process language. Brain scientists are studying whether they can predict which young children may struggle with reading to provide them with early help. John Gabrieli at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is leading the study of five-year-old in about twenty schools in the Boston area.
They studied in the schools with kindergartens. And for all the children joining in the study, they give them a brief set of paper-and-pencil tests to look at which children appear to be at some risk for struggling to read. So far, fifty of them have been examined in a scanner, a special machine, to show brain activity. Written tests are not always able to identify dyslexia or other problems, while brain scans may offer a more scientific way to identify problems. And with reading problems, early identification is important. When it comes to helping children overcome reading difficulties, the younger the child, the more effective they are.
Reading problems are not usually identified until a child is in the third or fourth grade. The later children are recognized as poor readers, the less treatment can help. And, as Professor Gabrieli points out, poor reading can make education a struggle. Reading is everything. Even math and science have textbooks.
While the children are given tasks related to reading, the brain scans measure the extent to which certain parts of the brain become active while the children do the work. The scientists say they are pleased with early results from the study, but have a long way to go.

The Hottest Apps
IF you’re one of those people who likes to take a look at their phone from time to time, you’re not alone. Using apps has now become part of everyday life. But with so many on the market that claim to be the best, which ones should you download onto your phone to have fun with? Below, four have been picked out for you.
Evernote
In the world of note taking, Evernote is the king. It allows users to create electronic files such as text, photos, audio, and videos. It also lets you organize your files, tag (标记) them, and search them easily.
One of the most useful features on the app, though, is being able to log onto any device with your Evernote account and use your files. The app automatically stores your content in the cloud storage, and syncs (同步) it with your other devices.
Another feature that is new in the latest version of the Evernote app is “Places”, which allows you to sort the files, photos, audio or video you have created by the location where you created them.
So if you need some organization in your life, Evernote is the app for you.
Candy Crush Soda Saga
The original Candy Crush Saga took the world by storm, leaving millions addicted to its endless candy-popping levels. But now there is a new challenge: Candy Crush Soda Saga. The app is similar to the original, but different enough to draw you in with a few new features. The app is still a match-3 game, which means that you have to move a piece of candy until there are three matching ones.
There are a few new features, though, such as soda bottles, which burst into purple liquid when you match three of them. There are also hidden gummy bears in this new version, and to complete the levels, you must clear the candies to reveal the hidden bear. These new features make the game a little harder than the old version, and you can expect to spend more time on each level.
So if you liked the original Candy Crush game, Candy Crush Soda Saga will be a new treat with much of the same fun as before.
Moment Cam
Moment Cam brings you some of the most useful and wanted features a camera app can have, such as adjusting the flash, sequence shots (连拍), adjusting the timer, and selecting different-sized frames for photo sharing sites. But what sets the app apart from all the others is the selection of simple, minimal buttons that you hardly notice are there.
The best thing about the app is not what it does, but what it leaves out. For once this app is not full of too many confusing and useless features. Instead, it is simple, clean, and easy to use.
If you love taking photos on your phone, Moment Cam might be just what you never knew you were looking for.
Lychee FM
You may have listened to a lot of radio programs. Do you now dream of making your own? With Lychee FM, you no longer need expensive hardware and complex software to do just that. You can record your shows and finish editing them within the app. Then you can upload your program to all the listeners on Lychee FM or share it through your social networks.
Apart from making your own programs, you can also listen to more than 15,000 stations through Lychee FM. One such popular show is called nühanzi, meaning “tough girls”. It discusses how women can handle just about everything. There are also shows on many other topics like sports, comedy, and music. The hosts include famous people such as music producer GaoXiaosong, and many other creative people.

Joy in the Journey

Their goal was far too ambitious, but it did cause them to dig. And that is 51 a goal is for — to cause us to move in the 52 we have chosen, in other words, to keep us 53 ! But not every goal will be fully 54 . Not every job will end 55 . Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. Not every dream will be 56 . But when you fall 57 of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things 58 my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging 59 life is lived. And I believe it is the joy in the journey, in the end, that truly 60 .

Sometimes willpower is a lot like the television remote control, hard to find just when you want it most. 36 But there are ways to increase your willpower.
Don’t try to change your economic situation, win a promotion and lose weight all on the same morning. Set one clear, specific goal and make a realistic plan to achieve it. Extra willpower sometimes requires extra energy,so don’t spread yourself too thin. 37
Whatever your goal is,don’t expect to achieve it overnight.38 If you are trying to kick a coffee habit, start by replacing your morning cup of coffee with a glass of water, instead of promising never to drink coffee again. Congratulate yourself on the small achievements. These successes help your willpower grow.
39 Ask friends, family or colleagues for assistance and tell them exactly how they can help. If your credit card bills have risen, for instance, let friends now that you are cutting back on expenses. Suggest having a common dinner instead of meeting at an expensive restaurant. Find support group or organization related to your goal and attend their meeting. You can get valuable advice, understanding and information.

New rules will let millions of Americans know where more of their food comes from. The law is known as COOL—Country of Origin Labeling.
American Congress first passed the law in 2002. Stores have had to label seafood by country of origin since 2005. But industry pressure delayed other requirements until last week.
Products that must now be labeled include fresh fruits and vegetables, muscle meats and some kinds of nuts. But the rules are complex, and many foods are excluded. For example, organ meats are free to be labeled. So are processed foods, including cooked or smoked food.
The United States has imported more and more food in recent years to save money and expand choices. Country-of-origin labeling has become more common lately but has still been limited in many stores.
Food safety is one reason why some shoppers pay close attention to where foods come from. For example, when a large number of people recently got sick from salmonella, officials blamed peppers from Mexico. Yet the last big food scare involved spinach (菠菜) grown in California. But labeling is also a way for people to know they are getting what they want. Some want to buy local foods or foods from a particular country.
The country-of-origin labeling law gives stores 30 days to correct any violations (违反) that are found. Stores and suppliers that are found to be deliberately violating the law could be fined 1000 dollars per violation. Federal inspectors are not to take action to enforce the law for six months to give time for an education campaign.
Some food safety activists say they are generally pleased with the law. They call it a good step that will give people more useful information.
21.What’s the regulation in the new rules?
A. Stores have to label seafood by country of origin.
B. The country-of-origin labeling has to be marked on more food.
C. Label
ing of food should include more useful information.
D. Stores have to label food by its producing date from now on.
22.Consumers are more concerned about where foods come from because _________.
A. they are particular about the tastes of the food
B. they are curious about the country of the food origin
C. most of the shoppers are food safety activists themselves
D. they’re concerned about food safety and want to get what they want
23.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Store owners are most likely to be the supporters of the law.
B. Most Americans prefer imported vegetables to vegetables grown in local places.
C. The government of America will forbid importing peppers from Mexico.
D. The law was not fully carried out until last week because of food industry’s resistance.

Men are spending more and more time in the kitchen encouraged by celebrity (名人) chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver, according to a report from Oxford University.
The effect of the celebrity role models, who have given cooking a more manly picture, has combined with a more general drive towards sexual equality and men now spend more than twice the amount of time preparing meals than they did in 1961.
According to the research by Prof.Jonatahn Gershuny, who runs the Centre for Time Research at Oxford, men now spend more than half an hour a day cooking,up from just 12 minutes a day in 1961.
Prof.Gershuny said,“The man in the kitchen is part of a much wider social trend. There has been 40 years of sexual equality, but there is another 40 years probably to come.”
Women, who a generation ago spent nearly two hours a day cooking, now spend just one hour and seven minutes—a great fall, but they still spend far more time in the kitchen than men.
Some experts have named these men in aprons as “Gastrosexuals (men using cooking skills to impress friends)”,who have been inspired to pick up a kitchen knife by the success of Ramsay,Oliver as well as other male celebrity chefs such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall,Marco Pierre White and Keith Floyd.
“I was married in 1974.When my father came to visit me a few weeks later,I was wearing an apron when I opened the door.He laughed,” said Prof.Gershuny.“That would never happen now.”
Two-thirds of adults say that they come together to share at least three times a week, even if it is not necessarily around a kitchen or dining room table.Prof.Gershuny pointed out that the family meal was now rarely eaten by all of its members around a table—with many “family meals” in fact taken on the sofa in the sitting room, and shared by family members.“The family meal has changed a lot,and few of us eat—as I did when I was a child—at least two meals a day together as a family. But it has survived in a different format.”
24.What is one reason behind the trend that men spend more time cooking than before?
A.The improvement of cooks'status. B.The influence of popular female chefs.
C.The change of female's view on cooking. D.The development of sexual equality campaign.

B.Women spend much less time on cooking than before.
C.It will take 40 years before men spend more time at the stove than women.
D.There is a sharp decline in the time men spend on cooking compared with 1961.
26.How did Prof.Gershuny see the family meal according to the passage?
A.It has become a thing of the past. B.It is very different from what it used to be.
C.It shouldn't be advocated in modern times. D.It is beneficial to the stability of the family.
27.Which is the best title for the passage?
