When we went into the shop, a woman came up and asked that she could help us, but we said that we would like look around on our own. He looked at us rather strange. After spending a year in Brazil on a student exchange program, her mother recalled(回忆), Marie Colvin returned home to find that her classmates had narrowed down their college choices. “Everyone else was already admitted to college,” her mother, Rosemarie Colvin, said from the family home. “So she took our car and drove up to Yale and said , ‘You have to let me in .’ ”
“Impressed--she was a National Merit (全国英才) finalist who had picked up Portuguese in Brazil--Yale did, admitting her to the class of 1978, where she started writing for the Yale Daily News and decided to be a journalist,” her mother said.
On Wednesday, Marie Colvin, 56, an experienced journalist for The Sunday Times of London, was killed as Syrian forces shelled(炮击) the city of Homs. She was working in a temporary media center that was destroyed in the attack.
“She was supposed to leave Syria on Wednesday”, Mrs. Colvin said. “Her editor told me he called her yesterday and said it was getting too dangerous and they wanted to take her out. She said she was doing a story and she wanted to finish it.”
Mrs. Colvin said it was pointless to try to prevent her daughter from going to conflict zones. “If you knew my daughter,” she said, “it would have been such a waste of words. She was determined, she was enthusiastic about what she did, it was her life. There was no saying ‘Don’t do this.’ This is who she was , absolutely who she was and what she believed in :cover the story, not just have pictures of it, but bring it to life in the deepest way you could.” “So it was not a surprise when she took an interest in journalism,” her mother said.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 71 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes. For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 72
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 73 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
74 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 75 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A. It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
C. Everyone was new to the network once.
D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.
F. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

Dear Lily,
I am so pleasant to have a word with you about what you are going through right now. It is natural that people often miss your parents the first time they leave home. The fact is you cannot live with your parents forever. Most people had to leave home for higher education or employment. It is important that you should realize that present separatio
n contributes to the healthy and optimistic personality.
You need to make friend in school and share ideas with those live closest to you now. Because you will still, miss your parents, your new friends will bring happiness and joy to your new life. Beside,I suggest that you enjoy yourself by taking an active part in various activities in school, from whom you will get much pleasure.
Wish you happiness every day.
Faithfully yours,
Editor

“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.
“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business.
The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Some- times it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”
The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming, because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.
Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.
32. How does the author understand Maxie’s words?
A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.
B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day.
C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.
D. Maxie really worries about the author’s security.
33. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. The salesgirl is rude.
B. The salesgirl is bored.
C. The salesgirl cares about me.
D. The salesgirl says the words as a rule.
34. According to the last paragraph, People says “Have a nice day” ______.
A. sincerely B. as thanks C. as a habit D. encouragingly
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Have a Nice Day——a Social Custom
B. Have a Nice Day——a Pleasant Greeting
C. Have a Nice Day——a Heart-warming Greeting
D. Have a Nice Day——a Polite Ending of a Conversation
It is very important for us to practice our English listening unless we want to
learn and use English well. Here I want to recommend an useful English
programme—VOA Special English.
There are several reason why do I think VOA Special English is good for
beginners.
Firstly, the vocabulary of VOA Special English is strict limited in 1500 basic
words used by Americans. Most students may have such a vocabulary.
Secondly, the sentence structures using in VOA Special English is quite simple,
making it easy to understand.
Last but not least, the broadcasters of VOA Special English spoke very slowly,
much slowly than Standard English.
A. Control of Respiration
B. Basic tips for preserving cut flowers
C. Role of Respiration
D. Most Important Aspect of Flower Care
E. Need for Clean Water
F. Ways of Stopping Respiration
61. __________
While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts. The key to keeping fresh cut flowers for a week or more without floral preservatives (which contain biocides that kill bacteria and fungus) is to keep the water fresh and the stems free of air pockets so they can continue to draw up water.
62. __________
An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations(康乃馨) retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowers at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care.
63. __________
Flowers are not intended by nature to live very long. Their biological purpose is simply to attract birds or insects, such as bees, for pollination (授粉). After that, they quickly dry up and die. The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration (呼吸), generates the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and color. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies.
64. __________
How, then, to control the rate at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature. We know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse is also true. Thus by maintaining low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly.
65. __________
Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to “drink” water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these unwanted substances, household chlorine bleach (含氯漂白剂) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach (at 4% solution) be added to each liter of water. The water and solution should also be replaced each day.

A new argument has been put forward as to whether penguins are disturbed by the presence of tourists in Antarctica.
Previous research by scientists from Keil University in Germany monitored Adelie penguins and noted that the birds’ heart rates increased dramatically at the sight of a human as far as 30 meters away. But new research using an artificial egg, which is equipped to measure heart rates, disputes this. Scientists from the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge say that a slow moving human who does not approach the nest too closely, is not viewed as a threat by penguins.
The earlier findings have been used to partly explain the 20 per cent drop in populations of certain types of penguins near tourist sites. However, tour operators have continued to insist that their activities do not adversely affect wildlife in Antarctica, saying they encourage non-disruptive behavior in tourists, and that the decline in penguin numbers is caused by other factors.
Amanda Nimon of the Scott Polar Research Institute spent three southern hemisphere summers at Cuverville Island in Antarctica studying penguin behavior towards humans. “A nesting penguin will react very differently to a person rapidly and closely approaching the nest,” says Nimon. “First they exhibit large and prolonged(延长) heart rate changes and then they often flee the nest leaving it open for predators (掠夺者) to fly in and remove eggs or chicks.” The artificial egg, specially for the project, monitored both the parent who had been ‘disturbed’ when the egg was placed in the nest and the other parent as they both took it in turns to guard the nest.
However, Boris Culik, who monitored the Adelie penguins, believes that Nimon’s findings do not invalidate his own research. He points out that species behave differently – and Nimon’s work was with Gentoo penguins. Nimon and her colleagues believe that Culik’s research was methodologically flawed(使无效) because the monitoring of penguins’ responses needed capturing and restraining(控制) the birds and fitting them with heart-rate transmitters. Therefore, argues Nimon, it would not be surprising if they became stressed on seeing a human subsequently.
67. According to the passage, what overall message is presented?
A. No firm conclusions are drawn.
B. Neither Culik’s nor Nimon’s findings are of much value.
C. Penguin reduction is closed related to tourist behavior.
D. Tourists are not responsible for the fall in penguin numbers.
68. Which ONE argument of the following is stated in the passage?
A. Penguins are harder to research when they have young.
B. Tour operators should encourage tourists to avoid Antarctica.
C. Not all penguins behave in the same way.
D. Penguins need better protection from tourists.
69. What do you notice about the views presented in the passage?
A. They are groundless. B. They are factual.
C. They are descriptive. D. They are conflicting.
70. What does the underlined word (final line) probably mean?
A. later on B. calmly C. separately D. in the same place
You can help your firm innovate(创新) by creating a culture in which all employees are actively encouraged to put forward ideas. But how do you get the best from people and encourage them to be at their most creative?
Stress the importance of creativity. 36 . If they don’t understand innovation can keep your firm competitive, your efforts at encouraging creative thinking risk falling flat.
Make time for brainstorming. Find some time for new ideas to come out. For example, set aside time for brainstorming, hold regular group works hops(研讨会) and arrange team days out. A team involved in a brainstorming session is likely to be more effective. 37 . You should also give individuals the space to reflect privately on their work if you think they need it.
Challenge the way staff work. 38 . Ask people whether they have considered alternative ways of working and what might be achieved by doing things differently.
39 . Motivate individuals or teams who come up with winning ideas by actively recognizing creativity, for example through an award scheme. You can reward those who just have a rich flow of suggestions, regardless of whether they are put into action at work.
Act on ideas. Creative thinking is only worthwhile if it results in action. Provide the time and resources to develop and carry out those ideas worth acting on. 40 . In addition, the flow of ideas may well dry up if staff feel the process is pointless.
A. Reward creativity.
B. The problem is that our minds are lazy.
C. Be willing to make mistakes.
D. Make sure all your employees know that you want to hear their ideas.
E. Individuals within the team can test and improve the ideas together.
F. Encourage employees to keep looking at the way they approach their work.
G. Failure to do so means that your firm may fail to benefit from innovation.

Ella Wood will graduate from Miami University next year with a master’s degree in public health. she is hoping to get a job in public health. But she has some worries.
Public service doesn't pay much, and her study at Miami University costs about $50,000 a year with living expenses. Ella has a scholarship from Miami University that covers just $4,000 a year and has taken out loans to pay for the rest. She would spend years paying back her student loans and not have money left over.
The good news is that in 2008, Congress recognized that there were so many students in
Ella’s position that it passed the College Cost Reduction Act. There were two programs established by this act that Ella could look into. The first is the income-based repayment plan, which allows lower-income graduates with a lot of debt to reduce their monthly payments. “Depending on a graduate's income and level of debt, the program, could limit her annual educational loan debt repayment to 15 percent of real income.” said Peter William, vice chairman of the College Saving Foundation.
The second is the public service loan forgiveness(贷款减免)plan, in which the federal government will
forgive the remaining debt of borrowers who make 10-year loan payment while working full time in public-service jobs. But the graduate must have a certain loan which is listed in the plan. “Typically, it is projected that a borrower who performs public service under this program will repay only about one-fourth to one-half as much money as a borrower who does not,” William said. He also pointed out that public service is broadly defined and includes any government and nonprofit organization job.
21. What might Ella Wood be concerned most when she graduates next year?
A. She might not a master’s degree directly.
B. She might not find a job in public health easily.
C. She had to pay back her scholarship to Miami University.
D. She wondered how to ease the pain of being in debt for years.
22. How can Ella benefit from the first program mentioned in the passage?
A. The income tax will be cut down.
B. One four of debt will be forgiven.
C. The total amount of debt will be reduced.
D. Ella will have more time to pay back the debt.
23. We can learn from the passage that______.
A. every graduate will get a scholarship like Ella.
B. graduates who work in public service get the highest payment.
C. the federal government encourages graduates to work in public service.
D. the College Cost Reduction Act only helps graduates with master’s degree.
24.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The total expense in American universities is too high.
B. The US government is trying to relieve graduates from heavy debt.
C. There are a lot of different programs to help students pay their tuition.
D. The US government forces all students to choose public-service jobs.
