What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed(展示)at  the entrance? Or the soft background music?

But have you ever noticed the smell? Unless it is badthe answer is likely to be noBut while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and soundsit is certainly thereAnd it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase

A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance via scent machinesA smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening airOne sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its storescustomers’ intension to purchase increased by 80 percent

When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairsscent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on salesThat is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be

Some years agothe focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales  assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displaysNow the rise of electronic commerce(e-commerce)has opened up famous brands to a wider audienceBut while e-shops can use sights and soundsonly bricks-and-mortar stores(实体店)can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leaveAnother brand store seeks to be much more than a shopbut rather a destinationAnd scent is just one way to achieve this

Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid departmentand coconut(椰子)scent in the swimsuit sectionA department store has even opened a new labinviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell bookspots and drawersin search of their perfect scent

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

36   Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.  37

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

38   They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “  39  Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry.   40

A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

B. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

C. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.

D. Anger may cause you a cancer.

E. Do not express your anger while angry.

F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

G. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

More student than ever before are taking a gap-year (间隔年)before going to university. It used to be called the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated(起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year.
This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by University and College Admissions Service(UCAS).

That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible,” he said.

But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship – young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to 15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacation periods,” he said.

32. What do we learn about the gap year from the text?

  A. It is flexible in length.         B. It is a time for relaxation.

  C. It is increasingly popular.       D. It is required by universities.

  A. arc better prepared for college studies    B. know a lot more about their future jobs

  C. are more likely to leave university in debt

D. have a better chance to enter top universities

34. How does Owain James feel about the gap-year phenomenon?

  A. He's puzzled  .B. He's worried.  C. He's surprised.   D. He's annoyed.

35. What would most students do on their vacation according to NUS statistics?

  A. Attend additional courses.       B. Make plans for the new term.

  C. Earn money for their education.  D. Prepare for their graduate studies.

We all know that eating junk food can make us fat. However, a new study suggests that it can do more than that—it can also make us lazy, reported CBS News.

In the study, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, US divided 32 female rats into two groups. The first group was fed a diet of healthy food such as corn and fish, while the second was given a diet of highly processed (加工的) food rich in sugar, namely “junk food”.

Within three months, the rats in the second group were already much fatter than those on the healthy diet. And when researchers trained the rats to do simple tasks, they found even more differences between the two groups rather than weight.

During the task – pushing a lever (杠杆) to receive a reward of sugar water – the rats on the junk food diet were found to be less willing to move, and they took longer breaks between each push than the lean(瘦的) rats did.

“It is as if the rat is thinking ‘This is too much work’,” Aaron Blaisdell, leader of the study, told the Los Angeles Times.

But what about the possibility that the fat rats were less passionate about getting sugar water because they were already eating lots of sugar in their daily diet? That’s why researchers repeated the tests by rewarding fat rats with plain water when they were extremely thirsty. However, the results came out just the same.

According to researchers, these differences suggest that junk food changed the chemistry in the rats’ brains.

The experiment didn’t end there. After six months, the rats’ diets were switched, and the overweight rats were given a healthy diet for nine days. However, this change didn’t help reduce their weight or improve their ability to perform tasks, which means the effects of their junk food diet persisted (持续存在). “There’s no quick fix,” said Blaisdell.

For a long time, we’ve believed that people become fat because they are lazy. But this study has proven the opposite to be true as well, which indicates that laziness and obesity are a “vicious cycle (恶性循环)”.

So, if you constantly feel tired, lacking any urge to get up from your chair, it could be that you’ve been studying too hard. But you should also pay attention to your diet.

66. During the first three months of the experiment by researchers at the University of California, ______.

A. rats from the healthy diet group ate nothing but corn and fish

B. rats on the junk food diet ate more than those on healthy diet

C. rats on the healthy food diet performed better at simple tasks than those on the junk food diet

 C. change the diet habits of fat rats

  D. find out the influence of sugar on rats’ brains

68. The underlined word “there” refers to ______.

B. after the type of food rats prefer had been identified

C. after a quick cure for obesity had been found

69. We can conclude from the article that ______.

A. fat people are usually lazier than lean people

B. people should switch between different types of diets to keep healthy

I received a call today asking if I would be willing to bring food to a family in need. The mother was having a major operation and would be lying down for several weeks. Of course, I responded with an immediate “Yes!”. As I planned the meal in my head, I reflected on how many times over the years I had been asked to prepare food. I have done so countless times with a very open heart.

But the truly amazing thing is that I have received double over the course of my life. When my mother passed away, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks. A woman from the church of our community stopped by each evening with some food. The gift of food was her small way of trying to ease our pain.

Later in my life, when I was on bed rest during my pregnancy with twins, women of the church again stepped in to help. They arranged babysitting for my two-year-old daughter, and brought lovely dinners to our house. Even when I was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals to my hospital room. How we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter.

Food is all about comfort. It feeds our bodies, but it can also feed our souls. When you hear people talking about their favourite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. I know that I will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. It is truly a gift I want to prepare and deliver to someone in need.

There are roughly 55 million single women in the US, many of them fashionable, sexy and smart, with their finger on the pulse of life. But when that certain finger is ringless, even the most self-confident finger fears the shame and blame of disappointed family during a visit home. The holidays are known to cause stress to scores of single women in the pains of “The Panic Years”, who call the annual visit-and-interrogation (审讯) the “Thanksgiving Third Degree”. Now some women have admitted to buying fake, cheap “engagement rings” just to prevent parents and other overly-critical family members from delivering ridicule and judgment over their single status.

It may sound like a slippery slope towards avoidance issues and other psychological problems, but if it quiets them long enough without you getting questioned about why your boyfriend of three years hasn’t proposed yet, it could be well worth the $30 investment. Sometimes it’s completely soul-pressing when you come home for the holidays empty-handed — literally (准确地) — watching your family members’ faces show disappointment that you’re back another year without any engagement ring.

Heather, a 31-year-old lawyer from New York, was well on her way to being both unhitched and unhinged (神经错乱), thanks to her mother’s persistent request about marriage. She feared that the constant blaming could destroy not just her own wise judgment, but threaten her long-time relationship with her boyfriend, Tony, who was regularly interrogated about his intentions from his would-be mother-in-law. Well aware that showing up without a ring for the holidays would ruin the mood of the entire weekend, she became very resourceful.

“I got a fake ring for $30 just to shut her up,” she said. “It actually worked and it turned into a really great visit!” Just three months later, Heather had a real ring to show off. Tony proposed on their own timetable on Valentine’s Day and her mother was never the wiser.

55. From the passage some single women buy fake rings _______.

A. to save money for their future marriage

B. to keep away from blame from parents

C. being vain to show their beautiful fingers

D. to check how others evaluate them

56. Some single women fear their holidays because _______.

A. they can’t find suitable partners

B. they will be questioned for being single

C. their parents blame them for just not wearing rings

D. their parents aren’t satisfied with their casual attitude

57. What caused Heather to be resourceful?

      A. Getting help from her parents on weekends.

B. Thinking of how to make weekends meaningful.

C. Having many resources to enjoy the weekends.

D. Not wanting to spend stressful weekends home.

58. What can be implied from “ it turned into a really great visit”?

A. Heather wasn’t afraid of visiting her parents.

B. Heather found visiting her parents more enjoyable.

C. Heather managed to make her parents happy.

D. Heather wore a fake ring confirming her engagement.

Though many students fail to pass the National College Entrance Examination every year, they will have learned many ________ lessons such as hard work, devotion, communication etc. during their high school.

Music died here last spring, or rather, it was killed by members of the school committee who ignored the importance of music as part of the high-school curriculum.

The committee decided that teaching students how to take a test is more important than a curriculum in which students can explore their interests in the arts as well as academics. Because the school system is running out of funding(资金), it needs to make sure that students pass the test or even more money will be lost. If students fail the state testit is not the fault of music classes — they are failing because the “academic” classes are not adequate.

It is painful to think of how many students will be discouraged from singing, acting, and playing instruments because school programs are no longer offered. Many families cannot afford private music lessons, and many potential musicians may not find their calling if they are not exposed to it in school. The fact that the school committee thinks the arts are not worth the investment(投资) will certainly make some students believe the arts are not worth their time or support and the cycle will continue.

Teaching for a test does not shape students into complete, well-rounded people.
