Americans plan parties for many reasons. As in other cultures, many Americans attend parties for weddings and religious or national holidays. But some parties are especially American. For example, a group of neighbors may gather on their street to eat food, play music and visit with one another. This is called a block party. A woman might invite a group of women to a party called a baby shower for a friend who is about to give birth. Guests bring presents for the new baby.

Americans also attend tailgate parties. A tailgate is the back end of a truck or other vehicle that opens down. The tailgate parties are a big part of sports culture in the United States. Friends bring food and drink to a sports event. They eat together in the parking area of the sports stadium.

Birthday parties are also very popular. Many parents organize a party for their child around a theme. Birthday parties usually include gifts and a birthday cake with candles. In many parts of the United States, cupcakes have become a popular replacement for cakes.

Birthday parties can be low cost or very costly. Some parents take their children’s birthday parties very seriously, even when the child is too young to fully understand the celebration.

One group of parents started a website called Birthdays Without Pressure. They decided that some parents were under too much social pressure to plan costly parties for their children. The group sees this movement as an example of America’s culture of too much stuff. The group’s website gives suggestions on how to keep birthday celebrations simple, meaningful and fun without spending a lot of money. Their advice may be very helpful during this period of economic recession(萧条).

AGovernments should regulate the real value of water

BMeasures should be taken to centralize the management of water resources

CIt’s advisable to build small and cheap irrigation systems in some hot and dry areas

DHumanity hasn’t placed efficient value on water resources

EThe world population is increasing faster and faster

FThe water problem is already serious in certain parts of the world

1_______

Humanity uses a little less than half the water available worldwideYet occurrences of shortages and droughts are causing famine and distress in some areas, and industrial and agricultural by-products are polluting water suppliesSince the world’s population is expected to double in the next 50 years, many experts think we are on the edge of a widespread water crisis

2_______

But that doesn’t have to be the outcomeWater shortages do not have to trouble the world----if we start valuing water more than we have in the pastJust as we began to appreciate petroleum more after the 1970s oil crisis, today we must start looking at water from a fresh economic perspectiveWe can no longer afford to consider water a virtually free resource of which we can use as much as we like in any way we want

3_______

Instead, for all uses except the domestic demand of the poor, governments should price water to reflect its actual valueThis means charging a fee for the water itself as well as for the supply costs

4_______

Governments should also protect this resource by providing water in more economically and environmentally sound waysFor example, often the cheapest way to provide irrigation water in the dry tropics is through small-scale projects, such as gathering rainfall in depressions凹地 and pumping it to nearby cropland

5________

No matter what steps governments take to provide water more efficiently, they must change their institutional and legal approaches to water useRather than spread control among hundreds of even thousands of local, regional, and national agencies that watch various aspects of water use, countries should set up central authorities to coordinate water policy

Europe’s deadly outbreak of a rare form of E. coli bacteria (大肠杆菌) has brought new attention to food safety issues. One of the problems when people get sick from food is that the simplest question is often difficult or even impossible to answer. Just what did the people eat that made them sick?

Of course, one way to avoid these medical mysteries is to keep dangerous organisms out of the food supply. This is easier said than done, but scientists keep looking for new ways.

Scientists in the United States have developed an experimental system that uses a high-tech optical scanner. The system is designed to identify the presence of contaminants(致污物) like soil or animal waste on fresh produce. These can be sources of E. coli. E. coli bacteria naturally live in the intestines () of humans and many animals. Most kinds of E. coli are harmless but some can make people sick.

The new scanner can also show damage and imperfections that might make the produce unappealing to shoppers.

Scientists designed the system at a Department of Agriculture research center in Beltsville, Maryland. Moon Kim of the Agricultural Research Service led the team.

MOON KIM: “We were requested, we were asked, to develop a method to detect contamination in produce. So we started with the apple as the model sample.”

The scanner uses a high-speed camera placed over the conveyer belt that moves the produce along. As the apples move along the belt, the scanner captures images of each piece of fruit.

Moon Kim says the team hopes the system will be available before long.

MOON KIM: “We are targeting for development in commercial plants for the next several years.”

The scanner can direct a sorting machine to separate the bad apples from the good ones. The system is currently able to show the surface of only half the apple as it speeds by. The inventers hope to improve the process so it can show the whole surface.

Most good interviewers will make an effort to establish and keep eye contact. Make sure that you do not find yourself looking down or away. If you wear glasses, be sure to buy the non-glare lenses. Do not stare.

Rapidly nodding your head can leave the impression that you are impatient and too eager to add something to the conversation -- if only the interviewer would let you. Slower nodding, on the other hand, emphasizes interest, shows that you are validating (确认) the comments of your interviewer, and encourages him to continue. Tilting (倾斜) the head slightly, when combined with eye contact and a natural smile, shows friendliness and approachability (可接近的).

Avoid at all costs the technique that some applicants use: grinning idiotically (傻笑) for the length of the interview, no matter what. This will only communicate that you are insincere (虚假的).

It’s worth remembering that the mouth provides a seemingly limitless supply of opportunities to convey weakness. While music has value all by itself, researchers have long noticed that musicians also tend to be better at learning languages and show other improved reading and math abilities. Now a new study from the University of Washington by Christina Zhao shows that rhythm is an important bridge between music and speech as early as nine moths of age.

Researchers randomly placed babies into two groups of 20 each, and each group played at the lab with their parents for a dozen 15-minute sessions over a month.

In one group, researchers played recordings of songs with a waltz rhythm and showed the parents how to help their babies tap out that 1-2-3 beat in time with the music on boy drums or with their feet. In the other group, children played with typical toys and no music.

The babies in the music group were better able to detect random mistakes in that rhythm when they heard it within two weeks of the last session. They also showed a stronger brain response to disruptions in the rhythm. For example, researchers would sometimes alter the timing of syllables(音节)by slightly shortening the middle sound of a word like bibbi to make it bibi—and the babies with music training were more likely to notice it.

In other words, music training not only improved the babies’ ability to notice when a musical rhythm skipped a beat, but also improved their ability to notice when the rhythms of speech changed unexpectedly, an important skill for learning to talk

The study reflects Zhao’s personal experiences as a pianist who music in college, and as someone who speaks both Mandarin and English. She noticed that a lot of her fellow musicians were also good at learning other languages. “That really got me wondering how these two are related, “Zhao said.

Group exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve physical fitness and sustain(保持) a healthy lifestyle. Group exercise is challenging, yet fun and empowering! Of course everyone knows that exercise is good for the body. However, studies have shown that when exercise is performed in groups, it's not only great for improving physical health but for psychological health. It's an opportunity to be social, release endorphins(内啡肽), and improve your strength. Additionally, group exercise creates a community feel and the shared common goal motivates participants to work hard. The instrumental support of taking on a fitness journey with others proves more effective than going to the gym alone.

Another beneficial aspect of group exercise is the informational support participants receive from the instructor. Many people fear the gym because they feel lost and don't want to embarrass themselves. If you feel you can relate, then group training is an even better option for you. It's a great opportunity to learn more about fitness through the clear instruction and supervision (监管) of a fitness instructor. If you're tired of wandering around the gym wasting time and becoming bored, you can attend an upbeat group fitness class that'll keep your workout on track. Don't let fitness frighten you!

If you're serious about wanting to live a healthy lifestyle, it's extremely important to surround yourself with people who'll provide you with the proper emotional support. I wouldn't scold anyone for deciding to party on weekends and in turn I wouldn't expect anyone to give offence to me for focusing on my health. Surround yourself with people who uplift, encourage and understand you! Make fitness even more fun by trying something new or any group fitness class, with a friend. Plan to go for a jog together. Then try a fun healthy restaurant or fresh juice bar! Fitness can be both fun and social!

Surrounding yourself with people who'll provide you with respect support can be very beneficial while working towards reaching health and fitness goals. First, decide to do it for yourself and work towards staying positive. Then make sure the people you surround yourself with are supportive. Don't let negativity ruin your motivation.

 Oxford Street

London is shoppers’ paradise, and most visitors head for Oxford Street. Halfway along is Sel-fridges, one of the world’s first department stores where the architecture and window dressing impress even before you go in. There are at least four other major stores on this street, plus Europe’s largest music shop. In December the atmosphere is especially festive because of the Christmas lights which are always lighted by a politician, a great sportsman, or a super star.

 Kensington High Street

A fashionable area for shopping is Kensington High Street. One of its department stores even has a roof garden-good for relaxing between purchases. There’s also an organic food superstore.

 Borough Market

You can’t visit London and not go to a supermarket. One of the oldest and best for food is probably Borough Market on the south bank of the Thames. Get off the underground at London Bridge and wander among fresh fish stalls, bakeries, and fruit and vegetable sellers. You can also buy specialist food to take away, like cheeses, pork pies, mustard and chutney.

More places for bargains

Portobello Road on a Saturday is your best choice for jewelry or collector’s items. It’s a short walk from the subway station at Notting Hill Gate and you never know what you will find. For clothes, Camden Market is the place. It gets a little crowded at the weekends, though. Convent Garden offers great experience for the simple pleasure of looking at jewelry and gifts.

Stuttering(口吃) is a communication disorder(疾病) generally characterized by unconscious repetitions or pauses in the flow of speech. These repetitions and pauses can bake many forms, such as repetitions of parts of words (“li-li-like this”). Sometimes, there are moments when a sound or a period of silence is lengthened (“llllike this” or “l-ike this”).

Stuttering can be classified into a number or communication disorders: neurogenic(神经性的) stuttering and psychogenic stuttering are associated with sudden onset (发作) and, as their names imply, with a specific known cause—either a problem in the makeup of the brain or a great psychological challenge. These disorders are comparatively rare and differ in terms of causes, symptoms and treatment from developmental stuttering. Developmental stuttering typically starts between the ages of two and a half and four. The onset of the disorder, which can be gradual or relatively sudden, generally occurs during the period of rapid development in a child’s language skills, motor skills, character, and social interaction.

The cause of developmental stuttering are not well understood and various theories have been offered throughout the history of speech-language pathology (the study of the causes and effects of illnesses). The roots of stuttering have been believed to relate to a number of causes: emotional problems, neurological problems, improper reactions from caregivers and family members, language planning, and speech motor difficulties among others. These theories have shown the promise of explaining some characteristics of stuttering but no single theory has thoroughly described the experiences of people who stutter.

Young children who have stuttered for only a short time have a high rate of natural recovery, though it is impossible to determine which children are most likely to recover and which are likely to continue stuttering. Most experts recommend early evaluation and treatment aimed at preventing the development of a chronic(慢性的) communication disorder.

Speech-language pathologists disagree about which approach is best for older children and adults. Treatment options include training to change speech patterns, turning to doctors to minimize negative reactions, drugs, and electronic tools that improve fluency. Self-help and support groups also play an important role in recovery for many people who stutter. Many people who have taken stuttering treatment programs are able to make positive changes in their speech skills and communication abilities so they can communicate freely.

A. give their family more time                B. consult a doctor immediately
