高三英语试题

I hate Black Friday sales. It’s often a gathering of people who are here for many different reasons. Some are looking for a deal on that one item for their loved one, or perhaps themselves. Their intentions are completely unrelated to the festive time of the year.

It was several years ago when my wife asked me to meet her at the local department store on Black Friday morning. They had advertised a child’s bike that she wanted to purchase for our son. We stood with a very large crowd, waiting for the manager to blow the whistle. After a while the whistle blew. It was like throwing a bucket of small fish into a tank of sharks. I told my wife that if we obtained a bike, fine, but if we did not, I was OK with that too.

As the pile of bikes began to gradually decrease in size, I saw my polite opportunity to wrap my hands around the corner of one of the boxes. I lifted it up and suddenly felt some mild resistance. I looked up see one of the largest gentlemen I had ever seen in my life. Frightening was not the word to describe his presence. He wore lots of belts of metal studded leather around both arms and even his neck. Tattoos(纹身)were an obvious passion of his.

I started to give up the box but he gently pushed it back in my direction and back into my hands. He then directed it into my shopping cart. He looked at me, smiled, and said, “Merry Christmas.” My wife and I went to the checkout, paid for the bike and went home. All the way home I was thinking that this moment was by far the best gift I had ever received for Christmas. The kindness of a stranger broke all preconceived notions(预想)I may have had of stereotypes and prejudices.

B. Custom is a second nature.

C. The best Christmas gift

Students and teachers at a Los Angeles high school missed their lunch break after a mountain lion walked into the school and tried to join them.

“The big cat was seen to walk across the schoolyard at John F. Kennedy High School shortly after noon on Friday. Instead of sitting down to eat, students and teachers quickly hid themselves in classrooms and called the police. The police sealed off the area until a wild animal expert could arrive and knock the animal out with a couple of tranquilizer darts(麻醉飞镖),” said Andrew Hughan, the spokesman of Department of Fish and Wildlife.

When officers arrived, the mountain lion ran into a nearby backyard but quickly grew sleepy and confused after the darts hit it. “It’s on its way back to the Santa Susana Mountains,” said Hughan. He added that the animal appeared to be healthy and about 2 or 3 years old. The department later posted a photo on Twitter of the sleeping big cat that was being taken to the wilderness.

Kennedy High School is in the city’s Granada Hills section, on the edge of mountain lions’ habitat. Still, it had to travel a couple of miles through a large neighborhood, across a golf course and around a freeway to get there. “Probably what happened was that it was running after a deer, a rabbit or a dog late last night for food. It looked up this morning, saw the school and thought, ‘Oh, oh, I’m in trouble now.” said Hughan. “Mountain lions wander in cities every few weeks, but this one got more attention because it broke the school’s quietness.”

A famous mountain lion known as P-22 has been wandering in the Hollywood Hills near Griffith Park for some time and P-22 killed a bear in the park’s Los Angeles Zoo last month, but it remains popular enough to have its own Facebook page.

   C. They sometimes do much harm to citizens.

   D. They often wander somewhere in the cities.

27. What is the main purpose of the text?

How would you like an easy way to earn $2,500? All you have to do is to sit around and wait for your meals. There's a catch however. You have to stay in a chicken cage with a stranger for a whole week. There are no books or television or radio for amusement. You can't leave until the week is up. And a camera will be recording your every move.

Two people actually took the job. The idea came from Rob Thompson, a video artist. He wanted to make a film about the way animals are  treated. His goal was  to raise people's awareness of the living conditions of animals that are raised for food.

He decided to pay $5,000 out of his own savings to two people who were willing to live like chickens for a week.

To Rob’s surprise, quite a few people answered his advertisement. He had interviewed and selected Eric, a 24-year-old restaurant worker, and Para, a 24-year-old chemist. The plan was for them to spend seven days together in a chicken cage that was six feet long and three feet wide. A camera would record their experiences, which would take place in an art museum.

The week was long and difficult. They slept on a hard wooden floor. They couldn't stand up without hanging their heads. They ate vegetables and drank water from a garden hosepipe. Their only privacy was a toilet surrounded by a curtain. There were no sinks, mirrors, or toothbrushes in the cage. Their only inspiration was the two framed checks that hung on the wall outside the cage. Visitors who came here were warned, “Do not feed the humans.”

Finally it was over, and Para and Eric appeared from their cage. They had survived the week, and they each had a $2,500 check in their hands. When Rob Thompson opened the cage,  Eric  came  out,  changed  into  clean clothes, and ate a chocolate bar right away. “It's great to be able to stand up,” he said. Para just changed her clothes and left. After a week of visitors and reporters watching her, she

didn't want to talk to anyone.

46. What kind of person is Rob Thompson?

   A. He is curious about people's personal life.

   B. He is kind-hearted to animals.

   C. He hates people around.

   D. He likes to help poor people.

   B. to show the public how terrible animals' life could be

   C. to make more money by publishing the recorded videotapes

   D. to improve housing conditions of working people like Eric

49. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

   A. Easy Way to Earn $ 2,500.             B. Do Not Feed the Humans.

Greg Kloehn , an artist in Oakland ,California is using his skills to help the homeless. He builds very small shelters that make life on the streets a little more comfortable. The structures offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather. Each little house also has wheels on the bottom so it can go wherever its owner goes.

Greg Kloehn has given away at least 20 tiny houses. Several are on the roadside near an active railroad. On a recent day, Mr. Kloehn stops at one to visit Oscar Young. The two men hug. Inside his little shelter Mr. Young gets relief from cold nights on the streets. Mr. Kloehn also visits Sweet-Pea, another friend who also lives in one of the little homes the artist built. She says it keeps her safe and protects her possessions.

In the mornings, Mr. Kloehn searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what he can and takes it to his studio. There, he puts the houses together. Empty coffee bags become roof material. A washing machine door and refrigerator part become windows. Nails, screws and the sticky glue hold all the pieces together. The artist also attaches a small electrical device to the house. The device is powered by the sun.

Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man.

Last Monday, we were having our Chinese class while the teacher suddenly slipped and fell. We were all worrying about her. One of the boys carried her on the back, under the help of some others, to the clinic immediately. It turned out that her right leg broken and she had to stay in hospital. The following day, we went to visit her with flowers. Seen her lying in bed, we felt sorry for her and hoped that she will recover soon. To our surprised, this Thursday she returned back to the class on a wheelchair to give our lessons. We each were deeply moved and proud of having so a responsible teacher.
