I joined in a program call the “Happy School” in the holidays. It was given to some volunteers from the universities in our city. There were many courses, including photography, painting, basketball training for us to choose from. These courses were intended to help us left-behind middle school student in the countryside, our parents are working in other cities, make use of our holidays. The volunteers took good care of us, showed them how to do our homework and make sure of our safety. I learned a lot from the interested program. I will attend such programs again the next summer if there is some.

He has the coolest hair, and he is so funny. Every time you see him, you feel shy and embarrassed.

You don’t even know her, but you feel nervous whenever you see her and when she looks at you, you just smile like an idiot.

If a girl or a boy is making you feel this way, it sounds like you have a crush(爱恋).

Nothing your first crush is an exciting time. Sometimes , feelings for a crush can be confusing because they’re new to you. If you feel awkward around your crush, you’re not alone. That’s how most people feel. Some people are even speechless when they see their crush. It can be hard to control how you feel, but the rules of good behavior still apply. If your crush doesn’t want to talk with you or it seems like you’re making the person uncomfortable, it’s time to back off. Likewise, never let anyone behave in a way that makes you feel funny or uncomfortable.

When you develop special feelings toward someone, you might want to talk with friends about it, but sometimes kids tease(取笑) other kids about crushes. Getting teased is never fun, so if you need someone to talk with about a crush, a parent can be a good choice. They were kids once, too, and they know what it’s like. Maybe they’ll tell you about their own first crush!

When you have a crush on someone and you find out that he or she likes you, too, it’s a wonderful feeling. But sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. You might feel sad, disappointed, and rejected . If you feel heartbreak, those feelings can last for a while, but they will fade. And, try to be kind if you’re on the other end of a crushwhen someone likes you. It’s a compliment when someone thinks you’re special. If you don’t feel the same way, try to tell him or her in a nice way.

Crushers are new and exciting, so enjoy them while they last. Someday, you’ll be telling your own kids about your first crush!

It was early in the afternoon of May 10, 1996. I hadn’t slept in 57 hours. The only food I had been able to force down over the proceeding three days was a bowel of soup. Weeks of violent coughing had made ordinary breathing a bitter process. At 29,028 feet up in the troposphere(气体对流), so little oxygen was reaching my brain that my mental capacity was that of a slow child. Under the circumstances, I was incapable of feeling much of anything except cold and tired.

I’d arrived on the summit a few minutes after Anatoli Boukreev, a Russian climbing guide working for an American commercial expedition, and just ahead of Andy Harris, a guide on the New Zealand-based team to which I belonged. Although I just met Boukreev, I had come to know and like Harris well during the proceeding six weeks. I snapped four quick photos of Harris and Boukreev striking summit poses, then turned and headed down. My watch read 1:17 p.m. I’d spent less than five minutes on the roof of the world.

A moment later, I paused to take another photo, this one looking down the Southeast Eidge, the route we had chosen to go up. Training my lens(镜头)on a pair of climbers approaching the summit, I noticed something that until that moment had escaped my attention. To the south, where the sky had been perfectly clear just an hour earlier, a blanket of clouds now hid the peaks surrounding Everest. Later, after six bodies had been located, after a search for two others had been abandoned, after surgeons had removed the rotten right hand of my teammate Beck Weathers, people would ask why, if the weather had begun to worsen, had climbers on the upper mountain not observed the signs? Why did experienced Himalayan guides keep moving upward, leading a gang of relatively inexperienced amateurs — each of whom had paid as much as $65,000 to be taken safely up Everest — into an apparent death trap?

Nobody can speak for the leaders of the two guided groups involved, because both men are dead. But I can assure that nothing I saw early on the afternoon of May 10th suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down. To my oxygen-exhausted mind, the clouds drifting up the grand valley of ice known as the Western Cwm(西库姆冰斗) looked so friendly and innocent in the brilliant midday sun, not different from the harmless puffs(喷烟)that rose from the valley almost every afternoon.

As I began my descent I was extremely anxious, but my concern had little to do with the weather: a check of the meter on my oxygen tank had revealed that it was almost empty. I needed to get down, fast.

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus !” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it.” That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.

“Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”

“Go where, Grandma?” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money, ” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.

I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess(放假) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.

“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.”

The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

Tiny monitoring devices have become an increasingly common way for scientists to study elusive animals that are difficult to track on a day-to-day basis. However, now it seems that smart. Seals have caught on to the trick and are using it to their advantage to catch fish!

To find out if that is true, a team of researchers from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland selected a group often young grey seals that had neither encountered the ocean nor been exposed to any kind of acoustic(声音的)tags. The researchers then placed the seals one at a time, inside a pool that contained 20 foraging boxes, only two of which housed fish — one with tags and the other without.

Each seal was allowed to explore the boxes twenty separate times. In order to ensure that mammal was not depending on its memory, the fish were moved to different boxes each time. At first, there was no difference in the amount of time it took the seals to discover the tagged and untagged fish. However, after they had been in the pool a few times, they started locating the tagged fish much faster.

To confirm that this indeed was the case, there searchers conducted a second experiment using two boxes — one with pieces of fish and the other with just acoustic tags. Sure enough, the seals were all attracted to the one that was sending out signals.

While this experiment involved only seals, the researchers believe that other marine mammals may also be using the information to catch prey. Sadly, predators like sharks that have been tagged by scientists may be negatively affected, as pings they emit could warn their prey of their presence. Besides potentially messing up nature’s food chain, the “dinner bell” effect of the acoustic tags could also mean that the conclusions reached by previous fish studies may not be correct. Now that the secret is out, scientists will have to come up with another way to conduct their studies — one that is not detectable by the crafty marine animals.

8. What does the underlined part “the trick” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

    A. Tracking sea animals on a day-to-day basis.

    B. Following the sound that fish make.

    C. Attaching tiny monitoring devices to sea animals.

    D. Looking for ways to catch fish.

9. What is implied about the ten young grey seals?

    A. They have acoustic tags attached to them.

    B. They were not born in the ocean.

    C. They have been trained to recognize acoustic tags.

    D. They have better hearing than normal seals.

10. After doing the two experiments the researchers most probably concluded that ________.

    A. seals can really make use of the acoustic signals to prey

    B. seals can be easily fooled by acoustic tags

    C. seals are much cleverer than most of the other sea animals

    D. it’s really easy for seals to find their prey

11. The researchers seem to believe that sharks tagged by scientists ________.

    A. may benefit from the tags                 B. may attract seals by mistake

    C. may be annoyed by the emitted pings      D. may find it hard to find prey

It was a warm April day when a big fat envelope came in the mail from the only college I had ever imagined attending. I tore open the packet. My eyes were   41   on the word “congratulations”. I don’t remember ever smiling so wide.

Then I looked at my     42    package. The cost of my dream school’s tuition, room and board was around $ 40,000- a(n)    43      sum! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free   44    ? My other choices were good,     45    schools even if they weren’t as famous as my first choice.

In my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world-class writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go   46   I would be happiest. But as I was always careful with   47   , I wasn’t sure what to do.

One of the schools that   48    me a full ride had an informational    49    one night in the spring.    50    my parents’ financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile    51    , eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself.

At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus (校园)including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it    52    clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of   53   , class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school,    54    not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small   55   with many great programs. It seemed challenging but    56   .

As the president    57   his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort     58    me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there.

In all    59   , my university is not as well-known as my dreamuniversity. However, it turned    60   to be the right choice of schools for me.

As the morning school bell rings and students rush inteenagers in one classroom settle onto mats and meditation (冥想)pillows. They fall silent after the teacher taps a “singing bowl”.

These students are in a for-credityear-long mindfulness classwhich is meant to ease youth anxiety and depression and to prevent violence. For 90 minutes, three days a week, they practice a mix of yoga, sitting, and walking meditation, deep breathing, journaling, and non-judgmental listening.

Yoga and meditation have gained popularity among Americans in recent decadessupported by studies showing benefits to emotional, mental, and physical health. The centuries-old practices have roots in eastern religions, but Western culture has long focused on physical postures (姿势)breathing, and relaxation techniques.

Some people have greeted the move with less than enthusiasm. Last year, an elementary school in Ohio ended its mindfulness program after parents complained it was too closely linked to religion. But many school districts are reporting success. In Richmond, California, schools have reported drops in school problems among low-income, at-risk youths. The school district in South Burlington, Vermont, introduced a successful mindfulness course as part of a health and wellness program, and now administrators there have advocated mindfulness into K-12 currculums.

Two years ago, Caverly Morgan developed the after-school mindfulness program teamed up with Allyson Copacinowho teaches yoga. After hundreds of students signed upPrincipal Brian Chatard took note. The school was dealing with a students suicide (自杀),and few resources were available to address students’ emotional and mental health.

“High school is the hardest period of time for kids,” Mr. Chatard said. “You’ve got emotional changes, physical changes, and all the social pressures. It’s also the onset of mental illness for some kids, depression hits, and there’s the pressure of college and sports. All these things kids do is over¬whelming without having a strategy (策略)to deal with it. ” And now schools all over the country are introducing the practices.

25. What do Western people value more about yoga and meditation?

   A. Non-judgmental listening.       B. Religious meaning.

   C. Physical benefits.                 D. Journaling.

26. What can we infer about the mindfulness class?

   A. It is supported by parents.

   B. It relives pressure of students.

   C. It mainly builds students up physically.

   D. It improves students’ academic performance.

27. Who started the mindfulness class?

   A. Administrators.     B. Brian Chatard.    C. Caverly Morgan.  D. Allyson Copacino.

28. What is Mr. Chatard’s attitude towards the program?

   A. Supportive.        B. Concerned.     C. Doubtful.      D. Reserved.

As a teenager, my laziness was strong like a lock, which stopped me from doing things for my family. I worked hard at school, and something looked after my younger sister. Still, I found myself regularly resisting the request to  41   out at home with even the simples things.

Every Wednesday afternoon, for example, my mother 42  me to another town for a piano lesson. During my two-hour lesson, she’d rush to the nearby store and buy a week’s worth of 43  . Given the fact that my mom had driven me twelve miles there, twelve miles back,44  for my lesson, and bought me a candy bar, you’d think I’d be very  45  to help her bring the groceries into the house. 46 I wasn’t. I generally just brought in an armload(单臂之量) and left the 47  for Mom as I ran to my room, shut the door, and started studying.

Don’t get me wrong: even back in my room, I felt  48  about not helping my mother more. Deep inside, I wanted to change my 49 . But I also realized that once I did change, there would be no going back. 50  I took on more responsibility, my parents would start 51   more of me. At age fifteen, I sensed that this one small change would 52   something much bigger: my personal change from a cared-for, spoiled (被宠坏的) child to a more  53  , caring and giving young man.

I’ll never forget the Wednesday when I made a(n) 54  to jump in and see what happened. Returning home from the  55  , I disappeared into my room, as usual. But once inside, I felt that deep and burning 56  . Throwing my school books on the bed, I suddenly opened my door and  57  back to the garage to help my mother. How happy I felt that day!

Surely, over time, I continued to help out with more housework. The neat thing was, the more I helped out, the  58 I felt about myself and my place in my family. As Mom and Dad realized they could 59  on me more, our trips became far less stressful, too. In short, it was a win-win situation for everyone.

Sometimes the little things we put off doing the longest  60  out to be the simplest things to complete. And feeling happy beats feeling guilty any day.

Living with a roommate can be a great experience as many roommates become lifelong friends. However, roommates living together under the same roof for a long time unavoidably conflict with each other.  36  To prevent this from happening to you, each conflict should be addressed in a productive, healthy way.

   1. Set a time for discussion.

Once conflicts occur, you need to set up a time to discuss the conflict.   37  They may think about any problems they want to discuss. It also allows for a better discussion as the both roommates will most likely enter the discussion fairly calm.

   2. Make rules for discussion

Before discussing the actual conflicts, set up some rules to guide the discussion. For example, each roommate is allowed to air one problem at a time and the other roommate has a chance to respond to it before another one is brought up. Making rules beforehand can prevent a screaming match from breaking out.    38

3.    39

You can use your discussion to point out to your roommates their great traits and specific things you like about them. While this won’t solve the conflict, it can help your roommates be more understanding of your point of view and more willing to compromise.

4. Come up with a written roommate agreement

Once grievances(不满)have been aired by both parties you should develop a roommate agreement that is written down. This agreement should discuss what the rules are as well as what consequences exist for breaking them. For example, roommates having a conflict about overnight guests may compromise to allow overnight guests only on weekends with guests on weekdays being gone by 11 p. m.    40

A. Talk about your problems openly

B. Point out good things about roommates

C. Being honest can avoid unfriendly discussion

D. This provides both parties a chance for preparation

E. And disaster can strike when a conflict never gets settled

F. A consequence may be that the violator(违反者)pays $ 5 for breaking the rules

G. This is because both sides know they will have an opportunity to speak.
