“Tiger Mother” parenting raises media storm. A new book written by a self-described Chinese descent(血统)on her super-strict parenting—Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother has raised media storm and fierce debates in the US.
Amy Chua is a Yale Law School professor and the mother of two teenage girls. She is the daughter of immigrants of Chinese descent. In the Chinese culture
the tiger symbolizes strength and power. In her book Ms.Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters. For exampleher daughtersSophia and Louisawere never allowed to attend a sleep-overbe in a school playwatch TV or play computer games. They couldn’t choose their own after-class activities or get any grade less than an AThey had to play piano or violin—and no other musical instruments. She writes that if a Chinese child gets a B—which she says” would never happen”—there would be a screaminghairtearing explosion”She describes making her 7-year-old daughter play a piano piece perfectly—yelling and not letting her leave the bench even to use the bathroom—until it was.
Many people have criticized Chua. Some say her parenting methods were abusive. She even admits that her husband
who is not Chineseobjects to her parenting style. But she says that was the way her parents raised her and her three sisters.
       Stacy DeBroff
who has written four books about parentingsays Amy Chua’s parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. She says it represents a traditional way of parenting among immigrants seeking a better future for their children. But she also sees a risk. When children have no time to be social or to follow their own intereststhey might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. Stacy DeBroff advised parents not to just repeat the way they were raised.
      Alison Lo
an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Washington’s Bothell campus said“I don’t think Amy is advocating a best practice of parenting styleor that success and achievements are critical yardsticks(衡量标准)of a good life. But I can imagine how strong her daughters’ college applications are going to be. For many parents whose dreams are seeing their kids graduating from a competitive universityAmy is sharing with the readers that it is achievable by persistentdedicated parental guidance”Lo said in an interview with Julie Muhlsteina columnist with the US-based Heraldnet.com.“In that sensea young adult’s giftedness can be bornor made”Lo continued.

There are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket , making you believe that they are worth a try . How ? Packaging (包装)is the silent but persuading salesman .

There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer(消费者), so that is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the “quality” of the product and on how well it sells, because “Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products,” as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.

Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word “green” today can keep food prices going up.

Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That’s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald’s are inviting to both young and old.

This new consumer response(反应)to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and soul.

21.Why is the package of the product so important according to paragraph 2 ?

A. Because people enjoy the beautiful packsge more than products.

B. Because it is a rule that good products in fact need good package.

C. Because the package has a great effect on the “quality” of the product.
    D. Because the outlook and the quality of products are the same.

22. The underlined sentence “And the word ‘green’ today can keep food prices going up” in paragraph 3 suggests that consumers today are ________.

Astarting to notice the importance of new food

Benjoying the beauty of nature more than before

Cbeginning to like green vegetables         Dpaying more attention to their healthy

23It can be inferred from the passage that V8 is a kind of ________.

Avegetable dish      Biced drink            Chealthy juice        Dred vegetable

In every society it is necessary to have a general system of laws to ensure justice. Laws are designed to make certain that people's rights are protected and that people respect each other's rights. Sometimes, however, laws are passed which are specific(明确的) to a time or situation. For example, a town in Indiana once passed a law making it illegal(非法的) to shoot open a can(罐头) of food. Apparently, some gun - carrying citizens(公民) forgot their can openers and naturally enough, used their guns to do the job. This disturbed other citizens, and endangered their lives, so a law was passed to prevent it.

Specific laws sometimes remain in existence long after the problem has disappeared. The laws then seem strange. For example, the Indiana law was no longer necessary when citizens stopped carrying guns and using them as can openers. Since the law was no longer needed, what once made sense now seems like nonsense.

Sometimes laws designed to serve a good purpose were passed but somehow these became mixed up in their wording. As a result, the laws don't make sense. In one state there is a law which says that it is "illegal to move or to attempt to move a motor vehicle. " Obviously, a massive traffic jam would occur if everyone suddenly obeyed that law. But no one does, of course, because the intention of the law was not to prevent owners from moving their own cars. It was to prevent people from moving (stealing) other people's cars.

It is often harder to repeal (废止) a law than to pass one, so many of these old laws remain in existence. Because they no longer fit the way people live or because the problem no longer exists, these laws are ignored. Everyone understands that and life goes on. Thus, laws that once made very good senses now seem like nonsense.

61. According to the passage, laws are designed for the purpose of _____.

A. protecting people's rights                    B. making people respect each other

C. preventing gun-carrying                     D. punishing criminals

62. The author used the Indiana law as an example to explain ______.

A. how some laws are passed and changed    B. how people in Indiana open cans

C. why some laws may seem strange            D. why people in Indiana no longer use their guns

63. What's the problem with the law concerning motor vehicles?

A. It leads to traffic jams.                                    B. It is not clearly written.

C. It is not designed to serve a good purpose.        D. It has been out of date.

64. We can conclude from the passage that _______.

A. a law system is necessary for every society

B. some laws that don't make sense may also get passed

C. it is more difficult to change the old law than pass a new one

D. some laws may seem strange as time passes

                      How to Be a Winner

Sir Steven Redgrave

Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals

“In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes(糖尿病) . Believing my career was over, I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was it—the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believe in myself. I am not saying that it isn’t difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn’t finished yet. Nothing is to stand in my way.”

Karen Pickering

Swimming World Champion

“I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success—you can’t follow a career in any field without being well-organized. List what you believe you can achieve. Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are, and you’ll be a step closer to achieving them.”

Kirsten Best

Poet & Writer

“When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can’t achieve something. Then, there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to concentrate. When I feel tense, it helps a lot to repeat words such as ‘calm’, ‘peace’ or ‘focus’, either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological tool.”

I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓约)mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends. And they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here’s what I wanted to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an email. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I could choose, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.

I learned to love the journey, not the destination, I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.

By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face, Learn to be happy, and think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived.

21. The best title of this passage probably is _____________.

Visitors worry that London is an expensive city but there really are so many free things to do here. The following ideas should get you started.

All of London's major museums are free, but most offer some special exhibitions for a fee. My favorite is the Museum of London where you can learn the history of London from Roman times to today. And I love the Geffrye Museum which shows English domestic interiors(内务) and helps bring to life what it was really like to live in London.

I regularly hear people tell me the Queen Mary's Rose Gardens in Regent's Park is their favorite spot in London, and who am I to argue?    No visit to London is complete without seeing this military tradition. The Queen's Guard in London changes in the Forecourt inside the gates of Buckingham Palace at 11.30am every day in the summer and every other day in the winter. Get there early and view the spectacle(壮观的场面) from outside the front gates.

Trafalgar Square is one of Britain's greatest visitor attractions and was designed by John Nash in the 1820s and constructed in the 1830s. As has been all too apparent in recent days at Balcombe, few issues cause greater concern than energy policy. Many village communities feel their countryside is being ruined by the power-producing machines of wind farms; yet they never take "direct action", even though the planning laws put them at a severe disadvantage. And the generous subsidies (财政补贴) , which encourage the expansion of wind power, are not favorable to the village communities and set landowners in conflict with other residents (居民) .

Those who disagree with the rapid expansion of wind farms state that the damage they cause is out of proportion(比例) to the benefits they bring, because their energy output cannot match that of the carbon-based power stations they are supposed to replace. Supporters insist that wind must be part of a mix of renewables, nuclear and carbon, and that the country is committed to meeting EU ( European Union) targets for non-carbon energy generation.

Against this background, the fact that there is an argument within the Government over whether to publish an official report on wind farms' impact on the countryside becomes even more extraordinary. The two parties in the coalition (联合) government are in disagreement over what it should say.

We have some advice for the two parties: publish the report, and let the country be the judge.  Even if it contains evidence that wind farms are harmful, it will hardly be a pleasant surprise to people who do not like them. Equally, supporters must argue their case by acknowledging the concerns and explaining why they are either misplaced or worthy of much attention.

The suggestion that further negotiations are to take place to produce an "acceptable" report suggests that the politics of coalition government are doing the country harm in a certain way. Given the sensitivities involved, all the information should be available so that people can reach their own conclusions, rather than being left with the suspicion(猜疑)that facts are being replaced by political beliefs.

12. We can learn from the first paragraph that__________.

A. many village communities are satisfied with the subsidies

B. the residents are in favor of the expansion of wind farms

C. energy policy catches much attention of the public

D. the planning laws offer great benefits to the residents

A. is more rapid than that of carbon-based power

B. agrees with EU targets for non-carbon energy generation

C. is expected to be much better than that of nuclear power

D. guarantees an increase in energy output

14. It can be inferred from the passage that____.

A. an official report will settle the energy problem

B. the two parties are divided over the issue of wind farms

C. the two parties have agreed on a further negotiation

D. political beliefs concerning energy issue go against facts

15. Which of the following reflects the author's opinion?

A. Increase political impact on energy policy.

B. Leave the two parties to reach their own conclusions.

C. Let the nation judge the facts about wind power.

Recently a professor of philosophy(哲学)in the United States has written a book called Money and the Meaning of Life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day to day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he has asked his students to do is to keep a record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they can see what they really value(重视)in life

The professor says our relation with others often becomes clearly defined(明确)when money enters the picture. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some moneyIf he doesit brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Otherwise it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesnt Since money is so important to us, we consider those who are rich to be very important. The professor interviews some rich people in his research for his book

Question:  What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich?

Answer :  The most surprising thing is why people give me so much respect(尊重). I am nothingI dont know muchAll I am is rich

In his bookthe professor uncovered an important need in modern societyto bring back the idea that money is a tool rather than the endMoney plays an important role in the material worldbut expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life.

32The students are asked to keep a record of every penny they spend to______.

A. learn how to spend money

B. learn how to make more money

C. know what to write in a record

D. know what is important in life

33In the second paragraph, the professor mainly tells us ________.

A. never to borrow money from a friend

B. friendship disappears when it comes to money

C. money can influence friendship

D. money can weaken friendship

34Through his bookthe professor seems to tell us

A. money is very important in the material world

B. the purpose of our life is to make money
