Many sports players have not only accomplished incredible acts of athleticism(运动能力), but also unbelievable acts of sportsmanship(体育精神). There were some  41  examples in 2014, and I have  42  two that inspired me.

One example of sportsmanship took place in the Sochi Olympics. Russian Anton Gafarov was hobbling(蹒跚而行) along the track, far  43  the rest of the skiers. One of his skis was broken. He had tried to  44  with the damaged equipment. Canadian ski coach Justin Wadsworth was the only one who had a(n)  45 . Wadsworth didn’t want Gafarov to finish slowly, hobbling across the line. He wanted him to finish with  46 . The Canadian skiers were already out of the race, giving Wadsworth two  47 : Leave Gafarov to hobble across the line on one ski, or give him the spare one. Wadsworth gave him the extra ski,  48  Gafarov to get second place in the quarter-finals.  49 , he came in sixth in the semi-finals. It was Wadsworth who helped Gafarov  50  his Olympic dream.

The other example took place in the 2014 World Cup quarter-final match between Brazil and Colombia. The game had just ended. Brazil had won, 2-1. Brazil was  51  on the sidelines, cheering and having a good time. Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez had just had his World Cup dream  52  despite scoring a record-breaking six goals in the competition. Brazil defender David Luiz walked over to him, pointed at him, and  53  the crowd to acknowledge him. He then declared his  54  for a game well played and  55  him for his wonderful World Cup performance. It made both the crowd and Rodriquez  56 .

As an athlete, I know it’s easy to get caught up in the  57  of a game. But I also know that   58  is just as important as losing and winning.

Always remember to  59  your opposing team. Play hard, but play fair. And always be nice. It’s the right thing to do and it always  60 .

Everyone wants to know the secrets of a long and healthy life. Here are some discoveries from health experts.

Many studies looking into the lives of centenarians(百岁老人) look at what they eat. Many people who live into their hundreds live in the Mediterranean  (地中海), so their diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil, gets a lot of attention. The diet has been linked to a healthier older age, lower risk for heart disease, and even protection against memory loss.

Education is related to a longer life. A 2012 report from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics found that people with a bachelor’s degree or higher live about nine years longer than people who don’t graduate high school. James Smith, a health economist at the RAND Corporation, is also a supporter of the argument for staying in school for better life expectancy. His findings show education should be an even bigger factor than race and income. Educated people are more likely to land better jobs, plan for their future, and make healthier lifestyle choices.

Being a hard worker doesn’t necessarily mean job-stress will harm you. The Longevity   长寿Study found that plenty of hard workers lived long lives. “Skeptics(怀疑者) may wonder if hard workers really are enjoying life.” the authors write, “We found that productive, hardworking people (even in old age) are not stressed or miserable, but tend to be happier, healthier, and more socially connected than their less productive peers.”

Having a strong social group is associated with a longer life. We often turn to friends and family for support, and taking care of the people that matter to us may help us take better care of ourselves, some evidence shows. Some research even suggests that immune(免疫) function is improved when we are around our friends, and that they help with stress management.

Research shows that sitting for long period of time put people at risk for shorter lifespans and other health risks. A 2011 study found that each hour people spent sitting down and watching TV after age 25 was linked to 22 minutes from their overall life expectancy.

8. According to James Smith, which makes the greatest difference to a long life?

A. Race           B. Income             C. Education         D. Books

9. From the fourth paragraph, we know_____.

A. Hard workers suffer from greater stress

B. Less productive workers tend to be happier and healthier

C. Nobody doubts that hard workers really are enjoying life

D. Hard workers are likely to enjoy a longer life

10. According to the passage, in order to live a long life, we should_________.

A. sit still frequently and have a good rest

B. find a job after middle school and work hard

C. be social and make more friends

D. settle down in the Mediterranean

11. The passage is mainly about ________.

A. diet and health

B. some discoveries on health

C. the value of good education

D. the secret of a happy life

When TV programs report wars or disasters, the editors rarely use the most horrifying pictures of dead or wounded victims because they don’t want to upset their viewers. Even so, viewers are usually warned in advance that they “may find some of these disturbing” so they can look away if they choose. But the men and women whose jobs are to record those scenes — the TV cameramen — have no such choice. It is their duty to witness the horrors of the war and record them, no matter how gruesome and unpleasant they may be. Consequently, it is one of the most dangerous, exposed and emotionally taxing job that the world offers.

Today, the demand for their work is rising. The explosion of satellite broadcasting and 24 hour news in recent years has created an almost insatiable demand for TV information. But major broadcasters and the TV news agencies — such as Reuters and WTN — have never had enough staff to meet the world wide demand for up to date pictures, so increasingly they turn to “freelance” TV cameramen.

These freelance cameramen are independent operators tied to no particular organization. They will work for any company which hires them for just a few hours or for several weeks in a war zone. But if freelance cameraman is injured in the course of the job, the TV company is not responsible for him. The freelancer must survive on his own.

“TV will always need hard, vivid moving pictures which are fresh, but these companies feel uncomfortable with large numbers of employees on their books,” explains Nik Growing, once foreign editor for Britain’s Channel 4 News and now a BBC news presenter.

“By hiring freelancers, they can buy in the skills they need only when they need them. It also enables them to contract out the risk,” he says.

A. TV cameramen should be given better choice of work

B. TV cameramen are being challenged by the freelancers

C. TV cameramen have to witness disasters and killing whether they like them or not

D.TV cameramen have to contract out the risks for their companies

The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.

Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.

When subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.

The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note:“Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.

However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (过滤) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.

“Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people understand what it is to move,” said David Belle, the founder of parkour ( also called free runninga kind of extreme sport).

Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royale? Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond’s wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.

Yes, that’s parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.

Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.

Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy(理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life, to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover said, “I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything.”

Another philosophy we’ve learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at any time, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence.

24Parkour has become popular throughout the world because of     .

A. the film, Casino Royale                B. its founder, David Belle

C. its risks and tricks                                D. the varieties of participants

25The underlined word obstacles in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to     .

26Which of the following is true of parkour?

A. It challenges human abilities.                B. It is a good but boring sport.

C. It needs special training.                       D. It is a team sport.

27Which of the following is the philosophy of parkour?

A. Sports and extremes.                           B. Excitement and popularity.

C. Dreams and success.                                  D. Determination and freedom.

Whitebait(银鱼) is the name we give to four different kinds of very small native fish. The most common whitebait is  73  (call) inanga in Maori. It is only about 5 or 6 cm long so you need quite a lot to make a meal.  74  , it is hard to catch and expensive to buy. You can only catch whitebait for 3 or 4 months of the year because some kinds are  75  (endanger). September 1st is the beginning of the season for people  76  (live) on the West Coast of the South Island. The season finishes in  77  middle of November.

This is the time when whitebait return to the rivers to lay their eggs after six months in the sea. People catch them in the mouth of the river. People  78  fish for whitebait are called whitebaiters. There are many rules. Whitebaiters use nets which they put in the river  79  they have to stay close by. Sometimes they catch nothing. If they catch a cupful of whitebait, they feel  80  (luck). This is why whitebait are so expensive to buy.

If someone  81  (give) you some whitebait, you can make whitebait fritters(细片). You use  82  (egg) and a little flour, add the whitebait and cook this like a pancake.

Suppose you become a leader in an organization. It's very likely that you'll want to have volunteers to help with the organization's activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.

Lets begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.

People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people's wish of participation from an internal factor (e. g. , I volunteer because it's important to me) to an external factor ( e. g. ,I volunteer because I'm required to do so). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.

Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience.

Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view volunteer as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am. Consistent with the researchers expectations, they found a positive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice: Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity... Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity.

25People volunteer mainly out of       .

Aacademic requirements           Bsocial expectations

Cfinancial rewards               Dinternal needs

26What can we learn from the Florida study?

AFollow-up studies should last for one year.

BVolunteers should get mentally prepared.

CStrategy training is a must in research.

DVolunteers are provided with concrete advice.

27What is most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work?

AIndividual differences in role identity.

BPublicly identifiable volunteer T-shirts.

CRole identity as a volunteer.

DPractical advice from researchers.

28What is the best title of the passage?

Most people who enjoy movies do not really care how they are made. They want to enjoy a good story. Movie producer and director George Lucas wants people to see the best-made movie possible. So, his latest Star Wars movie was made without using film, Shep O’Neal explains.

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” was made using digital cameras. A digital camera does not use traditional film. It seizes a picture on videotape. The pictures recorded on videotape are then placed in a computer.

George Lucas says that using digital cameras permits him to have much more control over the final product. For example, the picture can be changed after it is placed in a computer. An expert can change color, add or take out objects, add people or beings who are not real.

Much of what is seen in the new “Star Wars” movie is not real. Huge buildings, spacecraft and alien beings from other worlds were produced in a computer. The effects then were added to each part of the movie.

Movie experts say digital technology is the real future of the picture industry. A theater will no longer have to wait days or weeks to show a new movie. Theaters will be able to receive copies of new movies by linking computers. Or they will use small computer disks to get a copy of the movie.

When the new Star Wars movie began to be shown last month, only 94 theaters around the world had the digital equipment needed to show it. So Mr. Lucas’ company produced about 6,000 copies of the new digital movie on traditional film for most theaters. However, most people who have seen the movie say these film copies are of much better quality than other filmed movies.

Critics say the new digital technology is very costly. Many theater owners will not buy the new technology, yet many of the people who worked on the new Star Wars movie say they would not like to work with film again. They said using digital equipment was faster, and videotape is much less costly than film. One cameraman said the director of a movie can immediately see what was just recorded, something impossible to do with film.

Those who have worked with the new digital method of making movies say the new Star Wars movie is only the beginning. They say movies may quickly become all digital.

67. Why did Lucas’ company produce 6,000 copies of the new digital movie on traditional film for most theaters?

A. Because the company wanted more theaters to show its digital movie.

B. Because those theaters didn’t have computers linked to the company.

C. Because those theaters didn’t have the digital equipment needed to show it.

D. Because the audience say these film copies are better than other filmed movies.

68. Which of the following shows the right order of producing a digital movie?

     a. An expert transfers the pictures into a computer.

     b. An expert adds the effects to each part of the movie.

c. An expert adds or takes out objects and adds unreal people or beings.

     d. A cameraman uses a digital camera to seize pictures on videotape.

70. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage?
