Yosemite National Park, California
Hardy hikers can conquer Half Dome. The rock rises 4,000 feet above Yosemite Valley. The 17-mile round-trip trail passes two waterfalls and includes a 60-degree up a slope. “It takes more mental strength than physical strength,” Kaiser says. Although it’s possible to do as a day hike, most hikers camp and take two days. Hiking permits are required.

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “being a writer” and writing.
In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You've got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer (自由撰稿者), I had not prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if ? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
12. The passage is meant to________.
A. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience
B. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer
C. show young people it's unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fame
D. encourage young people to pursue a writing career
13. What can be concluded from the passage?

C. Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolation.
D. The chances for a writer to become successful are small.
14.“people who die wondering. What if?” ( Line 5, Para. 3) refers to “those ______”.
A. who think too much of the dark side of life
B. who regret giving up their career halfway
C. who think a lot without making a decision
D. who are full of imagination even upon death
15. “Shadowland” in the last sentence refers to _______.
A. the wonderland one often dreams about
B. the bright future that one is looking forward to
C. the state of uncertainty before one's final goal is reached
D. a world that exists only in one's imagination

Walt had a strong commercial sense of what would appeal to the public. Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and finally the other Disney theme parks around the world all came about because Walt Disney insisted that he could build an amusement park that was so much bigger and better than other amusement parks that it shouldn’t even be called an amusement park.
In 1940 he disclosed a plan to show Disney characters in their fantasy surroundings at a park across the street from the Disney studio in Burbank.
The idea of an amusement park grew in Walt’s mind as he traveled through the US and Europe and visited attractions of all kinds. Walt was sure that an amusement park would be successful in the United States if it offered a “good show” that families could enjoy together, was clean, and had friendly employees.
In 1948 he shared his concept with trusted friends, a modest amusement park with a central village including a town hall, a small park, railroad station movie theater, and small stores. Outlying areas would include a carnival (联欢) area and a western village. Soon he added spaceship and submarine rides, a steamboat, and exhibit halls.
Four years later, he decided on “Disneyland” for the name and formed a company to develop the park, Disneyland, Inc.
In 1953 he got Stanford Research Institute to examine the economic future of Disneyland and to find the perfect location.
They broke ground in July, 1954, and one year later, Disneyland opened. Within 7 weeks, a million visitors had visited Disneyland, making it one of the biggest tourist attractions in the US.
Walt combined his talent and his sense of what the public would want with lots of hard work. In 1960, with a mixture of huge successes and failures, Disney had created something that was successful beyond Walt’s own dreams.

The International Volunteer Day approaching, some volunteers of our school are organized to assist the policemen with traffic control in our city. At 8 o’clock on the morning of last Sunday, we gathered at the school gate. One of our teachers was in the charge of this activity but he divided us into four groups. Then we went to different crossings near our school. The police officers told us that we should do and how to protect themselves from danger. We spent the whole morning keep the streams of traffic flowing smooth. With a red banner in our hands, we stopped some road user running the red light. Some citizens praised us our good deeds. Because we were very tired that morning, we were proud to have offered service to our society.

A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket at the scene of his crime has been given a
lesson in honesty. His victim, who picked up the ticket, then claimed the $25,000 prize, managed
to trace him, and handed over the cash. The robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio
Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a tire on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped “to
help”, stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put
it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.
Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner.
He claimed the 60 million lire(里拉)prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he
decided he could not keep the money despite having been robbed. He advertised in newspapers
and on the radio, saying, “I’m trying to find the man who robbed me. I have 60 million lire for
him—a lottery win. Please meet me. Anonymity(匿名)guaranteed.”
Professor Sabbatucci received hundreds of calls from people hoping to trick him into
handing them the cash. But there was one voice he recognized and he arranged to meet the man
in a park. The robber, a 35‐year‐old unemployed father of two, gave back the suitcase and burst
into tears. He could not believe what was happening. “Why didn’t you keep the money?” he
asked. The professor replied, “I couldn’t because it’s not mine.” Then he walked off, spurning the
thief’s offer of a reward.
