This couple told me that their son had 44 the armed forces the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The woman told me that she had 45 ruined her health worrying over that only son. Where was he? Was he 46? Would he be wounded or even 47?

And when night came, I was 58 and could think of nothing except getting off my aching feet. As soon as I ate dinner, I fell into bed and instantly became59.     In New York, students at 18 schools participate in a program called We Future Cycle. Started by Anna Giordano in 2014, it teaches kids to recycle, compost (制成堆肥)and reduce  food waste.

Lunch areas at the participating schools are equipped with three clearly marked bins-compost, recycle and share. While the first two are common in schools, the third is rare, where kids can put their unwanted drinks, fruits, and even untouched sandwiches. Items in the  container are available for any student that wants them. Whatever remains at the end of the day is donated to the food bank. Giordano says the three bins have helped reduce the nun of trash bags from an average of 22 to just 2!

To ensure kids adopt similar habits at home, the non-profit has created extensive   curriculum to educate families  about the importance of sorting waste into the proper streams of recycling, composting, trash and food t0 donate- They also urge parents have  convcrsations with their kids about food choices.

What’s more exciting than having a fresh hot pizza delivered to your door? How about having it brought to you by a robot? Thanks to Domino’s Robotic Unit or DRU, that just became a reality! On March 8, the three-feet tall robot delivered its first pizza to some lucky residents in Brisbane, Australia.

The fully autonomous DRU is the result of a cooperation between Domino’s Pizza Australia and Sydney based startup Marathon Robotics. The 450-pound machine that travels at a maximum speed of 12.4 miles an hour can cross a distance of up to 12 miles and back, before requiring a battery recharge. LIDAR, a laser-based sensor technology similar to the one used in self-driving cars, enables DRU to detect and avoid obstacles, while traditional sensors, much like those used in vacuum robots ensure its path is safe as it heads to its destination.

The robot can fit up to ten pizzas and even has a separate cold area to accommodate drink orders.

Equipped with both Google Maps and GPS guidance, DRU can navigate bike paths and sidewalks and also find the most efficient way to its destination. Since the robot does not have to deal with road traffic, it could potentially make deliveries a lot quicker than humans. To access their food, customers have to enter the unique code provided to them by the company. This not only ensures that they pick up the right pizza, but also prevents the pies from getting stolen en route.

Though Domino’s has thus far built just a single prototype (样机),they expect additional DRU to be ready for service in their various Queensland locations within the next six months. But don’t expect these super cute robots to replace humans anytime soon. According to Domino’s the DRU still needs extensive testing, which the company believes could take up to two years.

And then there is also the problem of regulations. The public use of autonomous vehicles is still banned in most countries. But Don Meij, the CEO and Managing Director of Domino’s Pizza Australia New Zealand Ltd, is not worried. One day DRU will become an integral part of the Domino’s family." We for one cannot wait!

34. What must a customer do to get the food delivered by DRU?

   A. He/She should press their finger on a fingerprint scanner

   B. He/She should let the robot recognize his/her face

   C. He/She should scan the QR (quick response) code on the robot

   D. He/She should enter a cod supplied by the company

Birds enjoy a relatively slow rate of extinction but a new study suggests that rate might be severely underestimated(低估). Even worse, if human actions continue, bird extinction rates couldskyrocket and 12 percent of the known bird species(物种) could be dying out by the end of the century.

Presently there are 10,000 known bird species — most identified after 1850 — and an estimated 130 of those have become extinct since 1500, setting the extinction rate at about one species every four years.

But according to Stuart Pimm of Duke University, this rate fails to take into account three key points: The continual identification of extinct bird species from fossil remains; numerous "missing" species not yet declared extinct; and the fact that present extinction rates were not calculated using the proper baseline date for when the species was first described.

Taking these points into consideration, the extinction rate is closer to one bird species per year, says Pimm, the leading author of the study. And the rate could be three times as high as that if not for recent bird preservation efforts.

In previous centuries, bird extinctions took place mainly on islands as Polynesian peoples expanded into the Pacific or Europeans took over the Americas, wiping out birds along the way.

In recent years, scientists are seeing an increased number of extinctions on continents, again because of human activities. Habitat destruction, introduction of invasive species, and climate change combine to harm many bird species. Before human influence, the estimated rate of bird extinctions would have been only one species per hundred years, researchers estimate.

Bird extinction rates are slower than for most animals, mainly because humans do more harm to other species and people take special efforts to protect birds. Still, if the present trends continue, the researchers estimate that the bird extinction rate will continue to climb to as many as 10 species per year,

I hear many parents saying that their teenage children are rebellion(反叛的). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they degree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one anothers hands for safety.

They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(蚕茧) -----into a larger cocoon.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of todays parents have come to award(奖励) high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you dont care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come-----with the people who respect you for who you are. Thats the only kind of popularity that really counts.

     A. have much difficulty in understanding each other

     B. dare not do things

C. are not sure of themselves

     D. are very much afraid of getting lost

  31. Which of the following is NOT true according to passage?

     A. There is no popularity that really counts.

     B. What many parents are doing is actually keeping their children from finding their own paths.

    C. It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.

     D. Most teenagers say they want to do what they like to, but in fact they are doing the same.

     A. become different from others in as many ways as possible

Food safety is a problem in all places around the world and people in different areas of the world prepare foods in different ways. The WHO released (发布) five simple rules for preparing food in a safe way. They call these rules the “Five Keys to Safer Food”.

Key 1: Keep clean

16 . People should wash their hands often — before touching food and while they are preparing food. People should wash all surfaces and equipment used for preparing food.

Key 2: Separate raw (生的) and cooked

Raw foods should not touch prepared foods.  17 .

Key 3:  18

People should cook eggs and meat especially carefully. These foods may carry more micro-organisms (微生物) than other foods. Food like soup must be boiled for at least a minute to make it be cooked completely. It is also important that people re-heat cooked food completely.

Key 4: Keep food at safe temperatures

When people are finished with eating, they should keep the left food in a refrigerator below 5oC and shouldn’t store it for too long. At room temperature, about 20oC, the amount of micro-organisms can increase very quickly. But temperatures above 60oC or below 5oC control the growth of micro-organisms.  19 .

Key 5: Use safe water and raw materials

20 . Damaged or old food may develop harmful chemicals as it gets older.

“You can you up, no can no bb.” The latest Chinglish buzz phrase, having swept through Chinese cyberspace (网络空间) and society, has now made a landing overseas, entering the US web-based Urban Dictionary.

According to the entry put forward by “gingerdesu”, “You can you up” which means “If you can do it, go ahead and do it”, is a Chinglish catch phrases referring to people who criticize others’ work, especially when the critic is not so much better.

As well as “You can you up”, other Chinglish catch phrases, such as “tuhao” and “no zuo no die”, have also been recorded on the site.

Coined with roots in Chinese grammar, and even containing Pinyin, Chinglish words and phrases are even spreading beyond grass roots (草根) websites.

In 2013, “dama” and “tuhao” found their way into The Wall Street Journal and the BBC, and words such as “feng shui”, “Chengguan” and “people mountain people sea” have been admitted to the Oxford English Dictionary.

“The frequent use of Chinglish by foreign institutions suggests that people are looking more to the lifestyle and popular culture of China,” says Zhang Yiwu, professor of Peking University’s Department of Chinese Language and Literature.

“Words like ‘dama’ and ‘tuhao’ are so vivid. My friends and I use them a lot —it’s so much fun,” said Satoshi Nishida, a Japanese student studying at Beijing Language and Culture University.

“Behind these Chinglish words and phrases is the Chinese culture. They are reflections of the changes and trends in the Chinese society and they help people from other countries to understand what’s happening in China,” according to Xing Hongbing, a professor of Beijing Language and Culture University.

“When the price of gold went down last year, while the super purchasing power of the Chinese bargain-hunting middle-aged women drew worldwide attention, there was no effective way available in other languages to describe them, and ‘dama’ filled the gap very neatly,” says Xing.

8. Why does the author take “dama” for example in the last paragraph?

A. To suggest the culture and trends in the Chinese society.

B. To show the Chinese women’s super purchasing power.

C. To indicate the women drew worldwide attention.

D. To inform us that the price of gold went down last year.

9. How many Chinglish words and phrases are mentioned in the passage?

A. 6    B. 7

C. 8    D. 9

10. Which of the followings is NOT among the reasons why Chinglish become popular?

A. Chinglish is reflections of the changes and trends in the Chinese society.

B. Foreigners are looking more to the lifestyle and popular culture of China.

C. Chinglish is so vivid and much fun such as “dama” and “tuhao”.

D. Chinglish is spreading beyond grassroots websites.

11. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Chinglish swept through Chinglish cyberspace

All of us need friendship. An understanding between two friends mean both of them have similar ideas and trusting each other. Otherwise, it is impossible for him to help each other and to make their friendship to last long. As an old saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” So really friendship should able to stand all sorts of tests. And it is wise to have as many good friends that we can. The more friends we have, the more we can learn for one another, but the more pleasure we can share together.

I often read of incidents of misunderstanding or conflict. I'm left 41  . Why do these people create mistrust and problems, especially with those from other 42 ?

I was growing up in Kuala Lumpur in the early 1960s, 43   children from different races and religions played and studied 44   in harmony. At that time my family lived a stone's 45   from Ismail's. And no one was bothered that Ismail was a Malay Muslim and I was an Indian Hindu—we just 46   our differences. Perhapsour elders had not filled our heads with unnecessary advice, well 47  or otherwise.

We were nine when we became friends. During the school holidays, we 'd 48   the countryside on our bicycleshoping to 49   the unexpected. At times Ismail would accompany my family as we made a rare shopping trip to town. We would be glad of his 50  .

When I was twelve, my family moved to Johor. Ismail's family later returned to their village, and I 51   touch with him.

One spring afternoon in 1983, I stopped a taxi in Kuala Lumpur. I 52  my destination. The driver acknowledged my 53   but did not move off. Instead, he looked 54   at me. “Raddar?" he said, using my childhood nickname (绰号).I was astonished at being so 55  addressed (称呼).Unexpectedly! It was Ismail! Even after two 56   we still recognized each other. Grasping his shoulder, I felt a true affection, something 57   to describe.

If we can allow our children to be 58   without prejudice, they'll build friendships with peopleregardless of race or religion, who will be 59   their side through thick and thin. On such friendships are societies built and 60   we can truly be, as William Shakespeare once wrote, “We happy few. We band of brothers".

Chinese police are joining Italian officers on the streets of Rome and Milan in an experiment aimed at helping tourists from China feel safe, Italy’s interior ministry has announced.

The four Chinese officers, who were trained by Italians in Beijing, will wear the same uniforms they wear at home so their compatriots can recognize them easily.

More than 3 million Chinese tourists come to Italy every year, according to Liao Jinrong, the director general of the Chinese international co-operation bureau.

“This service was planned with Chinese tourists in mind and, if it works well, we may consider other forms of collaboration, given the presence of the Chinese community in our country,” said the interior minister, Angelino Alfano.

The officers will share information with Italian police and help Chinese tourists if they need to contact local authorities and diplomats from Monday until 13 May, the ministry said.

Liao, the head of the Chinese international co-operation bureau, said the officers’ assignment was a “historic moment” recalling that the route between China and Italy was mapped 700 years ago by Venetian merchant traveler Marco Polo.

Patience is of great importance in our daily life. Once I waited a bus to come at a stop. 30 minutes past, but no bus came. Both upset and annoyed, I decided to walk on feet. But no sooner had I left when the bus arrived. I thought if I had waited for one more minute, I would have caught it. If I chose to take a next bus, I would have to wait for other 30 minutes. Only then do I realize my problem. Being impatient will possible waste all the effort that we have put it in. Now whenever I am close to lose my patience, I’ll think of this experience.
