Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic and metal container are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.
However, today, more and more consumers are choosing “green” and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these, “Will this shampoo damage the environment?” “Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?”
A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider the environment safety of a product before they buy it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their products to make sure that they are “green”, that is, friendly to the environment.
Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarkets’ products carry labels to show that the product is green. Some companies have made producing of clean and safe products their main selling points and emphasize (强调) it in their advertising.
The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of “Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it.” The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.

My wife Julie and I were out on the road that 21 around where we live, when we saw a(n) 22 worn-out dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the road. We stopped, bent down, talked 23 to the dog and patted it. I 24 and there was a collar with a phone number. I called 25 no one answered.
The dog was painfully thin. So Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s 26 while I tried to encourage the dog. After Julie came back, we sat down on the sidewalk 27 our new friend made short work of the food. 28 we got her home. After trying for many times we got a 29 from the number. I was 35 to turn and go when an old black dog walked between us and almost fell down. Suddenly we had something more 36 than our problem to worry about. There was a creature 37 right before us and we had to work together to help it. We did help it. And here I am writing the story in my own home, in my own family. In the 38“Love Is Not a Fight” Warren Barfield talks about marriage. At one point he sings, “And if we try to leave, 39 God send angels to guard the door.”Sometimes angels come 40 as dogs.

A number of volunteers is involved in the aid and relief work in areas hit by such nature disasters as earthquake and droughts, as well as in such events as Shanghai Expo.Such volunteering activities are significant in many ways. In the first place, they have undoubtedly contribute greatly to this society. Secondly, by working as volunteers, the younger generation, especial college students, can open their eyes, improve their abilities and associate themselves well with the society and so on. Art is considered by many people to be no more than a decorative means of giving pleasure. This is not always the case, however,at times, art may be seen to have a purely functional side as well.Such could be said of the sandpaintings of the Navaho Indians of the American Southwest;these have a medicinal as well as an artistic purpose.
According to Navaho traditions, one who suffers from either a mental or a physical illness has in some way disturbed or get in touch with the supernatural—perhaps a certain animal,a ghost,or the dead.To break away from this, the ill person or one of his relatives will employ a medical man called a "singer" to perform a curing ceremony which will attract a powerful supernatural being.During the ceremony, which may last from 2 to 9 days, the "singer" will produce a sandpainting on the floor. On the last day of the ceremony, the patient will sit on this sandpainting and the "singer" will rub the sick or injured parts of the patient's body with sand from a specific figure in the sandpainting. In this way the patient absorbs the power of that particular supernatural being and becomes strong. After the ceremony, the sandpainting is destroyed so its power won't harm anyone.
The art of sandpainting is handed down from old "singers".The materials used are easily found where the Navaho settle: brown, red, yellow, and white sandstone, which is ground(研磨)much as corn is made into flour. The "singer" holds a small amount of this sand in his hand and lets it flow between his fingers onto a clean, flat surface on the floor, with a steady hand and great patience. He is thus able to create designs of stylized people, snakes and other creatures that have power in the Navaho belief system. The traditional Navaho doesn't allow copying sandpaintings, since he believes the supernatural powers that taught him the craft have forbidden this;however, such reproductions can in fact be purchased today in tourist shops in Arizona and New Mexico. These are done by either Navaho Indians or by other people who wish to preserve this craft.

A.By passing his supernatural power on to the patient.
B.By applying a magic substance to the patient's body.
C.By rubbing the patient's sick parts with sand from a sandpainting figure.
D.By destroying the sandpainting figure.
10.The traditional Navsho does not allow copying of sandpaintings because .
A.anything copied has no effect B.the craft only belongs to the supernatural
C.it's against Navaho belief system D.the copying may do harm to other Navahos

A few days ago, I was sitting in a Thai restaurant enjoying a meal when I got on a phone call from a friend I hadn’t spoken to in a long time. In my enthusiasm and excitement, I talked quite louder than usual voice and in Spanish, my mother tongue.
A few minutes into the call, an old lady sitting at the table beside mine got up, seemingly offended, and asked the restaurant staff to relocate (重新安排) a table as far away as possible from this man who seemed to be impolite.
I sank in my seat out of embarrassment. I ended the call soon afterwards and felt the urge to apologize. Before getting up, I looked around to see where she was and she was at the table farthest away from me. I noticed that the lady was alone and staring out the window. I found a tinge (气息) of sadness or anxiety and perhaps a desire for aloneness and peace. But I had obviously destroyed it minutes earlier.
Right then I abandoned my plan for a conventional apologetic gesture. Seeing those funny smile cards in my wallet, I took one out and wrote some words to express my apology. On signing my restaurant bill, I asked a waiter to secretly charge the lady’s meal to me and hand her the smile card instead of her bill.
Did she take it the wrong way, I wondered? Did she get confused? Did she refuse the anonymous (匿名的) offer? And so on. I just waited and felt nervous to learn the outcome. To my pleasant surprise, things turned out the best possible way.
The waiter approached me in a joy, telling me, “In the many times she had dined here before, I had never seen the old lady smile as she did when receiving the smile card and the $0 bill. She thanked me even though I explained that someone else did the job.”

From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in. Bob did complete college, married his loving wife, Evelyn and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Wards during the Great Depression.
Then he was blessed with his little girl, Barbara. But it was all short-lived. Evelyn was diagnosed with cancer and the disease stripped them of all their savings and then Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums. Evelyn died just days before Christmas in 1938.
Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn't even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he couldn't buy a gift, he was determined to make one — a storybook! Bob had created an animal character in his own mind and told the animal's story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope. Again and again Bob told the story, adding more details with each telling.
Who was the character? What was the story all about? The story Bob May created was his own autobiography(自传) in fable(寓言) form. The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was. The name of the character? A little reindeer named Rudolph, with a big shiny nose. Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day.
The general manager of Montgomery Wards caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book. Wards went on to print, “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores.
By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book. Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May, now remarried with a growing family, became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter.
