When Jack was a small boy, he was once asked to give a speech about “A Big Challenge in My Life”. To talk before the whole class, he was   61   (terrible) shy. However, he had no other   62  (choose), though. First Jack was to draft the speech,   63   was a piece of cake for him because he was a good writer. But the hard part   64   (lie) in his oral presentation, for  65   was not allowed to read the paper.

A real trial began when Jack stood on the platform   66   his legs trembling and his mind blank. He took a deep breath and tried his best   67   (calm) down. Surprisingly, it did work on him.   68   a few seconds, he was no more nervous and finished his speech. To his surprise, he made it!

From then on, his fear of talking before a big audience disappeared. Actually Jack had his confidence   69   (build) up. Now he   70    (turn) out to be a good speaker.

As we know, the greater difficulty we meet on our way to success, the more likely we will be able to achieve our goals.

In the age of the social network, there’s definitely such a thing as sharing too much; when it comes to losing weight, sharing could be key, though.

A new Northwestern University study published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface found that those who had an active hand in such online communities lost a higher percentage of their body weight compared to users who participated sparingly.

Scientists analyzed data from people paying a membership fee on Calorieking. Com, which permits them access to weight-loss tools (like a food journal) and an online club. While the identity of each user remained confidential, the researchers had access to age, sex, height, initial weight and time-stamped activities. They could also monitor members’ recorded weigh-ins, friend requests and community arrangement, though they could not read any of the actual conversations between users.

The researchers discovered that the users who recorded their weight and established close relations with other members were more likely to achieve their goals of ridding themselves of pounds. The most active users lost more than 8 percent of their body weight in a six-month period. The least active users, those with the fewest online friends and social interactions, lost around 5 percent of their body weight in the same period of time. The researchers theorize that participation plays a key role in weight loss because it offers an always-accessible network of support.

They’re also looking ahead: The positive results point to sensible uses for social networks in other areas of health. Online communities might be successful alternatives for minor illnesses like discouragement and alcoholism, for which in-person meetings are often suggested. Modern life is so complex and stressful, and to go somewhere for a meeting is often not practical, Luis A. Nunes Amaral, senior author of the study, said in a statement. It is hopeful that this alternative approach of going online for support could work.

42. In which column of a magazine should the text be seated?

A. Entertainment.           B. Fitness.          C. Technology.          D. Medicine.

43.Who would lose more weight according to the new study?

A. People frequently making online friends.

B. Network users sparing time to surf the Internet.

C. Members affording payments on Calorieking.com.

44. What can we learn from the 4th paragraph?

A. Scientists ought to pay for the online data they study.

B. Researchers can manage to know more of the users besides their names.

C. People’s active online communications matter in their losing weight.

D.The most active users lost 3% more of their weight than the least active ones within half a year.

45.What is Amaral’s attitude toward online communities?

A. Anxious.               B. Optimistic.            C. Undoubted.          D. Impractical.

_______, and you’ll succeed in time.

  A. Keep on trying        B. If you keep on trying

  C. Keeping on trying     D. To keep on trying

A Brown University sleep researcher has some advice for people who run high schools: Don’t start classes so early in the morning. It may not be that the students who nod off (打盹)at their desks are lazy. And it may not be that their parents have failed to enforce (确保) bedtime. Instead, it may be that biologically these sleepyhead students aren’t used to the early hour.

“Maybe these kids are being asked to rise at the wrong time for their bodies,” says Mary Carskadon, a professor looking at problem of adolescent sleep at Brown’s School of Medicine.

Carskadon is trying to understand more about the effects of early school time in adolescents. And, at a more basic levelshe and her team are trying to learn more about how the biological changes of adolescence affect sleep needs and patterns.

Carskadon says her work suggests that adolescents may need more sleep than they did at childhood, no less, as commonly thought.

Sleep patterns change during adolescence, as any parent of an adolescent can prove. Most adolescents prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. But it’s not just a matter of choice –their bodies are going through a change of sleep patters.

All of this makes the transfer(转移) from middle school to high school—which may start one hour earlier in the morning  ---- all the more difficult , Carskadon says. With their increased need for sleep and their biological clocks set on the “sleep late, rise late” pattern, adolescent are up against difficulties when it comes to trying to be up by 5 or 6 a.m. for a 7:30 a.m. first bell. A short sleep on a desktop may be their body’s way of saying. “I need a timeout.”

24. Carskadon suggests that high schools should not start classes so early in the morning because ________.

A. it is really tough for parents to enforce bedtime

B. it is biologically difficult for students to rise early

C. students work so late at night that they can’t get up early

D. students are so lazy that they don’t like to go to school early

25. The underlined phrase “nod off” most probably means “ _______”.

A. turn around      B. agree with others    C. fall asleep        D. refuse to work

26. What might be a reason for the hard transfer middle school to high school?

A. Adolescents depend more on their parents.

B. Adolescents have to choose their sleep patterns.

C. Adolescents sleep better than they did at childhood.

D. Adolescents need more sleep than they used to.

27. What is the test mainly about?

A. Adolescent heath care.              B. Problems in adolescent learning.

C. Adolescent sleep difficulties.         D. Changes in adolescent sleep needs and patterns.

It was a city in Hubei Province. On International Children’s Day, some orphans(孤儿) from the Wuhan Welfare Institute for Children ___61___(take) to the park. An elderly westerner was with them. The children love the man very much and call ___62___ Grandpa without doubt. This man was Professor William Dorrity, from Florida, the USA. In 2003, ___63___ Professor William Dorrity and his wife retired, they came to Wuhan and started to work as volunteers at the Welfare Institute.

The Dorrities have been working hard ___64___(improve) the conditions at the Welfare Institute since they came. They often take children on day-trips, ___65___(bring) them all kinds of food for the kids to enjoy. They recently bought audiphones(助听器) for four orphans ___66___ hearing problems. They also bought ___67___ wheelchair(轮椅) for ten-year-old Tan Jun, ___68___ suffers from a brain problem. The Dorrities said “we love China and we love children, ___69___ we are happy to do this. ___70___(Hope), there will be more people to give their love to those children.”

I am Henry Jekyll. I was born in the 1800s. I inherited(继承) a large fortune, a healthy body and an excellent mind. I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job. So the outside world saw a serious, hard-working, successful doctor. Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild, fun-loving, irresponsible young man. Both of them were me. They lived together in the same body.

“Was it possible,” I wondered, “to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?”

After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer. I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug. At last I got everything ready.

Late one night, I mixed everything together and prepared my drug. I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely, I drank every bitter drop.

I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place. Wild thoughts danced through my mind—the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. “If this is pure evil,” I thought, “I like it.”

I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I was shorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room, I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.

At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side. Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man. I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men. Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde’s eyes. I felt no dislike, however. Indeed, I welcomed him. Edward Hyde was me, young and strong and full of life.

21. In others’ eyes, the writer was ______.

A. wild and successful                                        B. fun-loving and responsible

C. quiet and irresponsible                                   D. serious and hard-working

22. The writer wanted to find a drug to ______.

A. discover the right mixture of chemicals            B. create separate bodies for both sides

C. observe the change of the chemicals                D. make himself smaller but stronger

23. From the passage we can learn that the writer ______.

A. felt quite delighted right after taking the drug

B. preferred kind Henry to pure evil Edward

C. was very sick of the shorter Edward Hyde

D. was satisfied with both of his bodies

Making words shorter is a common habit of English speakers today.

It seems that most sayings or popular words have their own abbreviation. 36.        For example, LOL stands for “laughing out loud”IMO is “in my opinion” and BTW is “by the way”. US technology website Lifewire made a list of the most common abbreviations in 2016.

Simple ones you may already know - like BTW, IMO and IDK (I don’t know) made the list. 37.        They include TFW (that feeling when), and FTW (for the win). TFW is sometimes used along with a funny photo to describe your feelings, while FTW is a kind of internet cheer used to express happiness. 38.        You can use this one before you tell someone what you think about something.

39.        Terry Wood, a foreign language teacher from Leonardtown, US, says the habits have lowered his students’ writing abilities. “They do not capitalize (大写) words or use punctuation anymore,” Wood told US News. “40.

A. The list is meant to be good fun.

B. Another interesting learn is IMHO (in my humble opinion).

C. But there were lots of other more difficult ones on the list, too.

D. This happens a lot when they are used on social media or in a text message.

E. Any word longer than one syllable (音节) is now abbreviated to one.

F. Researchers identified several ways in which teens changed language while speaking online.

G. However, some people believe these abbreviations are also causing problems.

Today’s workplace is unique in history. Never before have we seen people working together who represent such different backgrounds and experiences. This difference of age, race, gender, and work style makes it very difficult to organize and run a company.

As a result, companies are looking for individuals who can manage a wide range of employees effectively. Increasingly, managers are discovering that age differences among workers are a major cause of concern.

This has been an important realization. The management difficulties and challenges have led some experts to study intergenerational differences for an understanding of problems in the workplace. What they have discovered is interesting and may provide ways of improving working conditions in companies that employ individuals from different generations.

The first thing to realize, they say, is that differences of opinion about the importance of work and how to get work done are not a coincidence. That is, it is not an accident that young employees will be different from older employees. In fact, if employers do not pay attention to these differences, it is possible that anger will build up between people and lead to difficulties in the company.

Resentment (仇恨) between members of different generations, if not attended to, can lead to extreme anger and unhappiness and even lasting enmity if people are not careful. That individuals from different generations should come to view each other as if they were from different sides of warring countries should not be surprising.

It is natural for individuals from the same generation to form alliances (联盟), to come together for protection. Different generations represent different experiences in life, and these lead naturally to different opinions about oneself and one’s approaches to work.

If you were raised in a time of plenty, when products were readily available and relatively inexpensive, you would believe that prosperity is natural and expectable. If, on the other hand, you were raised in a time of scarcity, you would always be careful not to waste things for fear you would not have enough. You would make angry people who seem to believe that problems will always solve themselves. Such optimism in the face of difficulties would be a source of unhappiness between you and them. It is difficult, in such circumstances, to achieve a happy, agreeable atmosphere in the workplace.

32. According to the experts, employers should realize ______ if they want to avoid anger

between employees.

A. the different understanding of problems in the workplace

B. the different views on value of work and working methods

C. the different genders of employees in the workplace

D. the different ways of expressing anger in the company

33. The word “enmity” is closet in meaning to ______.

A. hatred                 B. sorrows            C. ignorance                 D. forgiveness

34. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Employees in some companies regard each other as mere enemies.

B. Employees’ attitudes towards life are related to the time when they grow up.

C. Employees who are raised in a time of scarcity tend to be angry with others.

D. Achieving a harmonious atmosphere in the workplace is the main task for employers.

35. What does the writer mainly talk about in the passage?

A. Employees should be cooperative and friendly with each other.

B. It is difficult for employers to have workers work in a friendly way.

C. The weakness of human nature causes the anger between employees.

D. The generational differences cause the disharmony among employees.

Peugeot is a French car maker originally founded in 1810, before the automobile was invented. Currently, Peugeot is one of the Europe’s most popular car brands, and the company sells several types of cars with the city driver in mind.

One of the most important parts of any vehicle’s interior is the floor mats. Even though we routinely overlook these seemingly insignificant parts of our cars, the tact is that floor mats help protect our cars and keep them looking new for years. Without protective floor mats, your car will quickly pick up dirt from your shoes and cargo. And this debris (碎)will eventually get into the fibers of the carpeting and decorations. After some time, this dirt will be very  difficult to remove, causing permanent damage to the vehicles.

However with tailored (定做的)Peugeot car mats, you can protect your car's interior and maintain its  value for a longer period of time. Tailored Peugeot car mats are designed  specifically for your vehicles, meaning that they will fit perfectly into the carpeted areas. Not only will this protect your cars from dirt, but they will also make the inside  of your vehicles look more beautiful. In addition, tailored car mats make it possible for you to find your vehicle and truly make it  your own. This is because you have a wide selection of mats to choose from. For example, if you plan to use your car mainly in the city, you can purchase cloth car mats that make the car seem more luxurious and comfortable. However, you can quickly and affordably swap your cloth mats for heavy-duty rubber mats  that are easy to wash and clean, Allweather rubber mats are great for use  in places where your car may get muddy ,or if you plan to use your car to transport tools, bricks, and other objects that could tear or damage traditional cloth mats.

25. What is the purpose of this text?

A. To introduce tailored Peugeot car mats.

B. To show us the history of Peugeot.

C. To inform us of which vehicle mats to choose

D. To tell us the importance of vehicle mats

26. What is the function of vehicle mats?

A. Make the vehicles look more beautiful.

B. Help increase the sales of vehicles.

C. Keep the floor tidy and clean.

D. Protect vehicles and help them look new.

27. What is the advantage of tailored Peugeot car mats?

A. They help the vehicles to sell better than expected.

B. They fit perfectly into the carpeted areas of the vehicles.

C. They make the vehicles much shinier than before.
