The son of a piano producer, Elwyn Brooks White was born in Mount Vernon in a w
ealthy family. And he was raised with the mix of sophistication(富有经验)and common sense that would mark his writing.
After graduation, White spent a year as a newspaper reporter in New York City, then decided to drive across the country with a friend. The trip gave White a lifetime of anecdotes.“When they ran out of money," White's friend, James Thurber, noted, "they played for their supper and their gasoline on an interesting musical instrument that White had made out of some pieces of wire and an old shoe."
When White returned to New York City in the mid-1920s, he spent a few years bouncing between advertising jobs and unemployment before trying his hand again at writing. Not very seriously, he sent some essays to a new magazine called The New Yorker.Since its founding in 1925, the magazine had struggled to find its niche, and White's work helped put The New Yorker on the map.His essays were funny and sophisticated; they spoke equally to socialites(社会名流)and cab drivers, professors and repairmen.Through his essays, which he wrote for nearly 50 years, White helped give The New Yor
ker its voice and identity.
In 1945, already a leading literary figure, White switched to his second occupa
tion writing children's books. He moved from New York to a farm in Maine, where he raised chickens and geese. Seeking a way to amuse his nieces and nephews, White started to write stories for them.“Children were always after me to tell them a story and I found I couldn't do it," he said.“ So I had to get it down on paper.”
By the time he died from Alzheimer's disease in 1985, White's essays had appeared in more literary collections in colleges than those of any other writer. Many said his essays matched his personality: sophisticated without being simple, critical without being mean.

I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign “Going Out of Business Sale”, I marched into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles (通道), I wandered, humming to myself and enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.
All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat a canoe(轻舟) exactly like my husband’s dream Supremo Numero-Uno, whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer’s suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a “Hi. I’m Mathew”. “Mathew. Tell me about this El Supremo canoe. What’s wrong with it? Why is it only $750?”
“Oh. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s brand new. We’re closing the store. It’s on clearance like everything else. I’ll go check.” A few minutes later he came back and said, “I’m sorry ma’am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package.”
I felt tears well up in my eyes. “Oh well”, I said sadly. “Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband’s dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He’s going to be 62 years old Friday. H
ad to retire early for his health. It’s been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won’t buy anything, but it’s just an old man’s silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired,” my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.

Nearly 19 percent of teachers of color(有色人种教师) left their jobs after the 2014-2015 school year. Some left for personal reasons like taking care of their families. But 50 percent said they left because they were dissatisfied with their employment situation, such as poor working conditions, student discipline problems and large class sizes. Thus, taking immediate measures to improve it is our top priority.
For years, researchers have proved the benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools, especially as our public school system has turned to one that is made up mostly of minority students. Teachers of color, who are more likely than their white counterparts to choose to work in racially diverse(多种多样的) schools, offer particular benefits to their students. Graduation rates increase among minority students when they are taught by racially similar educators, research shows. They can also serve as positive role models, and their presence reduces the chance of racial discrimination at school.
The Shanker Institute report suggests that the rate of minority teacher hiring is not the whole problem. The problem is what happens after these teachers enter the classroom. These teachers often work in high-poverty rural schools. They are more likely to have less-desirable working conditions.
Diversity is a key component to equality and opportunity. Where there’s a diverse teaching workforce, all kids thrive. So solutions must be found at once to turn this trend around. Firstly, schools should develop mentorship programs that support minority teachers once they are in the classroom. Secondly, more money should be spent in improving working conditions in these schools. Of course, school headmasters should also be evaluated on their ability to retain teachers of color.
12. Among teachers of color leaving their jobs, half of them quit because _______.
A. they had to take care of their children
B. they had to move to other places
C. they eventually found better-paid jobs
D. their employment situation was unsatisfactory

A. The solutions to increasing graduation rates among minority students.
B. The benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools.
C. The reasons for teachers of color leaving their jobs in many schools.
D. The ways to decrease the possibility of racial discrimination at school.
14. Which of the following components is vital to equality and opportunity?
A. Honesty B. Variety
C. Ability D. Safety
15. How did the author feel when writing the passage?
A. He felt angry about the government.
B. He was satisfied with the present situation.
C. He felt it urgent to solve the problem.
D. He didn’t care about diverse teaching workforce.

You've decided on getting a goldfish? Great! 16 Use the tips in this article to determine which fish is right for you and how to keep it healthy.
Get your tank.
When kept in healthy conditions, goldfish can grow to be anywhere from five to ten inches long, even if they are half an inch when you buy them. 17 If not, you will have to continue buying larger tanks throughout the fish's lifetime.
18
There are many varieties of fish out there; Comets, Fantails, Black Moors, Pearlscales, Orandas, and hundreds more, ranging in price from thirteen cents to two-hundred dollars. Do some research to pick one that is suitable for your tank.
Buy from a fishing store.
Try not to buy them from pet stores. The fish stores often have fish in better condition and are more knowledgeable about fish care. Don’t save some cash to buy a thirteen cent feeder fish. 19
Observe and choose a fish.
Does it have white spots on it's body? 20 If it is floating upside down or swimming awkwardly? If the answer to any of these is yes, do not choose that fish." A fish should be swimming upright at a relaxed pace.
A. Are its eyes abnormally swollen?
B. Buy the largest tank you can afford.
C. Some fish can often be shipped to you.
D. Know what type of goldfish you want.
E. These fish are often unhealthy and of poor quality.
F. Don't pick a fish that has been living in a tank with sick fish.
G. Owning a pet goldfish can be a rewarding experience for fish keepers.

Larry was on another of his underwater expeditions(探险)but this time, it was different. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for.
Larry first began diving when he was his daughter’s age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were either too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exception. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide. Children of his age were not even allowed to dive.
After the first expedition, Larry’s later diving adventures only got better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened on his back, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes, he was limited to a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures.
Larry’s first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Islands. There were numerous diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them .Fortunately for him, a man offered to take him around the different spots for free. Larry didn’t even know what the time was, how many spots he dived into or how many photographs he had taken. The diving spots afforded such a wide array of fish and sea creatures that Larry saw more than thirty varieties of creatures.
Larry looked at his daughter. She looked as excited as he had been when he was her age. He hoped she would be able to continue the family tradition. Already, she looked like she was much braver than had been then. This was the key to a successful underwater expedition.
29.In what way was this expedition different for Larry?
A. His daughter had grown up. B. He had become a famous diver.
C. His father would dive with him. D. His daughter would dive with him.
30 .What can be inferred from Paragraph2?
A. Larry had some privileges. B. Larry liked the rented diving suits.
C. Divers had to buy diving equipment.
D. Ten-year-old children were permitted to dive.
31 .What can be learned from the underlined sentence?
A. Larry didn’t wear a watch. B. Larry was not good at math.
C. Larry had a poor memory. D. Larry enjoyed the adventure.
32..What did Larry expect his daughter to do?
A. Become a successful diver. B. Make a good diving guide.
C. Take a lot of photo underwater. D. Have longer hours of training.
How to Manage Your Phone’s Data Use
Smart phones give you access to a wealth of information and media, but most networks put a limit on the amount of data you can use each month. A typical phone contract(合约)includes a data allowance of between 500MB and 10GB per month. 36 You see, your usage can mount up surprisingly quickly—watching a film on the phone is about 700MB in SD, an hour of streaming TV is around 500MB or 60-140MB for the same of radio, chatting on Skype for an hour is around 40MB. 37
①If possible, wait until you can connect to free Wi-Fi before using your phone’s data.
②When you are on the road, use your car’s GPS, not your phone, to find your way. 38 But maps are preloaded in a GPS, making this free to use.
③ 39 Many of these are funded by ads that pop up on your screen. Every ad has to download through your network, using up your data allowance.
④If you regularly need to use a lot of data on your phone, consider a data-compressing(压缩)app, such as Onavo (www.onavo.com). 40 So you use less of your monthly allowance. You may have to subscribe to such compression services, so you will need to weigh up whether it’s worth the cost.
A. The more data, the higher the monthly cost.
B. Remember to use free Wi-Fi anywhere you go.
C. Try these tips to better manage your data usage.
D. It compresses (压缩) data before it is fed to your phone.
E. But you might end up paying more than expected.
F. The phone has to download map data as you move.
G. Be careful of how many “free” games you play on the move.
I can’t understand ______a decision until it is too late.

I was born in a town called Blackburn, in the northwest of England, and lived there till I left home at the age of eighteen. My parents had moved to England from India during 61 1970s. As a child, I went to my local school and, of course 62 (speak) English with a local accent. But home was very different: we lived in a kind of “little India”, with a huge extended family of uncles and aunts. I remember feeling part of this big thing called “family”, and an even bigger thing called “India”. I suppose my family really influenced me ___63___ I was growing up. They used to talk about India as “home”—even___64___ at that time I had never been there!
To me, it doesn’t seem at all strange to grow up as part of two cultures. I am always thinking that growing up with two cultures is a gift, not a 65 (advantage).
