Housework is a frequent source of disputes(争论) between lazy husbands and their hard-working wives, but women have been warned not to expect men to pull their weight any time soon.

A study from Oxford University has found that men are unlikely to be doing an equal share of housework before 2050. Mothers, the researchers warned, will continue to shoulder the burden of childcare and housework for the next four decades, largely because housework such as cleaning and cooking is still regarded as “women’s work”.

The gap between the amount of time men and women spend on housework has narrowed slowly over the past 40 years. But it will take another four decades before true housework equality(平等) is achieved, the study concluded. The research found that in the Nordic countries, the burden of housework is shared more equally between men and women. In the UK, women spend an average of four hours and forty minutes each day on housework, compared with two hours and twenty-eight minutes for men. This is an improvement from the 1960s, when British women typically spent six hours a day on housework, while men spent just 90 minutes every day.

But progress towards housework equality appears to be slowing in some countries. Dr. Oriel Sullivan, a research reader from Oxford’s Department of Sociology, said, “We’ve looked at what is affecting the equality in the home, and we have found that certain tasks seem to be given according to whether they are viewed as ‘men’s work’ or ‘women’s work’.”

Dr. Sullivan said cultural attitudes taught at school may be responsible for the views of housework.  “At school it is much easier for a girl to be a tomboy, but it is much more difficult for a boy to enjoy baking and dancing,” she said.

       B. women now are too busy with their work to do housework

       C. women now spend less time on housework than before

       D. housework is shared equally between men and women

I fell in love with England because it was quaint (古雅) — all those little houses, looking terribly old-fashioned but nice, like dolls’ houses. I loved the countryside and the pubs, and I loved [Z-X-X-K]London. I’ve slightly changed my mind after seventeen years because I think it’s an ugly town now.

Things have changed. For everybody, England meant gentlemen, fair play, and good manners. The fair play is going, unfortunately, and so are the gentlemanly attitudes and good manners — people shut doors heavily in your face and politeness is disappearing.[Z-x-x-k.Com]

I regret that there are so few comfortable meeting places. You’re forced to live indoors. In Paris I go out much more, to restaurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has to be in a pub, and it can be difficult to go there alone as a woman. The cafés are not terribly nice.

As a woman, I feel unsafe here. I spend a bomb (a lot of money) on taxis because I will not take public transport after 10 pm. I used to use it, but now I’m afraid.

The idea of family seems to be more or less non-existent in England. My family is well united and that’s typically French. In Middlesex I had a neighbor who is 82 now. His family only lived two miles away, but I took him to France for Christmas once because he was always alone.

4The writer doesn’t like London because she _________.

A. is not used to the life there now

B. has lived there for seventeen years

C. prefers to live in an old-fashioned house

D. has to be polite to everyone she meets there

5Where do people usually meet their friends in England?

A. In a café.            B. In a pub.

 C. In a nightclub.        D. In a restaurant.

6The underlined part “it” (in para. 4) refers to_________.

A. public transport       B. the money

C. a bomb              D. a taxi

7The writer took her neighbor to France for Christmas because he _________.

A. was from a typical French family   B. had never been to France

C. felt lonely in England                       D. didn’t’t like the British idea of family

A week before Earth Day, posters were put up around our school, calling upon us join in the actions for the greener earth.

Our class came up with the idea to make use of using materials. We bring to our classroom worn-out clothes, pieces of cardboard and empty plastic bottle and turned those into dolls, handbags, tissue boxes and small vases. That weekend, we went to a nearby neighborhood but gave them away to the people there. All were very happy with those unexpected gifts, especial little kids and elderly people. It was so much successful that we were invited to share our idea and experience for all the students in our school. We are very proud of us and believe we can do more for a better world.

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel the most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as John talks to himself: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation for the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Adjust your cycle to some extent by staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (打起精神) and work better at your low point.

Begin with a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a slow yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do usual work in the afternoon and spend time doing important work for your high peak hours.

32. According to Dr. Kleitman if you don’t want to get up in the morning ____________.

   A. you must be a lazy person         B. you must catch a cold

   C. your energy cycle must be low     D. you should stay in bed

34. If one wants to work better at his low point in the morning, he should ____________.

   A. change his energy cycle           B. go to bed earlier

   C. overcome his laziness             D. get up earlier than usual

   A. help you to control your temper early in the day

This day marks the rising of a new food startup, the first company to be financed entirely by the crowd, and of it every business thus relies on thousands of customers to grow. Lisa, 25, its main founder and CEO, believes it will be a path that will become increasingly popular, and ultimately will produce more thriving(繁荣的)businesses from the scratch.

“In the food industry, no venture capital (VC, 风险投资) will even look at you until you’ve hit a million in sales. As a fresh hand in business, unless you’re independently wealthy, you will likely need to raise some money before then,” Lisa complained. So few businesses approached VC firms at the beginning. It was no exception with her. Thus, she turned to a new financing tool at hand, crowdfunding, to raise money from the crowd who’d like to take a bet on her company.

But for a company, it didn’t make sense to seek investments when all they had was an idea and a few months of consumer testing data. The food market is extremely competitive. No investor would put money behind a totally unproven new superfood product founded by a bunch of twenty-somethings. “But we had a story. And crowds love stories.” Lisa said delightedly. So she put together an online crowdfunding campaign, explaining how she began working with this amazingly nutritious plant in the Peace Corps and then started selling it in the U.S. to support the poor in the West Africa.

On the online platform where they were to raise the money, a friend convinced them to change their goal from $20,000 to $50,000. Lisa stayed up all night worrying they wouldn’t hit it. But they reached $24,000 in 24 hours and ended their funding with $53,000. Seeing the number, Lisa said, “Thank you! To my crowd and for your belief!”

4. Why couldn’t Lisa get investments in a traditional way?

C. VC demanded too much in choosing partners.

D. Consumers were not satisfied with her new products.

C. Many hands make light work.    D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

From the jagged (锯齿状的) peaks of the Himalayas to the powerful Yangtze River that flows into the Pacific, China’s vast terrain (地带) and varied climate make it the sixth most biologically diverse nation on the planet.

Since 1998, The Nature Conservancy has been working in China’s northwest Yunnan Province to protect some of the amazing natural and cultural diversity unique to this country for its future generations. In cooperation with Chinese local and state government agencies, the Conservancy established the Yunnan Great Rivers Project, which protects an area about the size of West Virginia.

Did you know?

●China contains 10% of the world’s total species.

●At least 15% of China’s mammal species and 8% of its bird species are found nowhere else on Earth.

●Nearly 15,000 plant species are native to Yunnan Province.

●Yunnan is home to 75% of Tibetan medicinal herbs and 30 endangered species.

What is the Nature Conservancy trying to do?

Education for Sustainability (可持续性)

The Nature Conservancy recognizes that environmental education is an important element of working closely with local communities to achieve sustainable conservation results. In response, the Conservancy launched a new program called Education for Sustainability which tests means of teaching and learning that combine conservation goals, social justice, and appropriate development and participation in a vision and mission for personal and social change.

Promoting Green Tourism

Tourism is both an environmental threat and an economic opportunity, with the potential to provide extremely needed income to northwest Yunnan. The Conservancy is working with local communities, government agencies, and tourism enterprises(企业) to develop strategies for “green” tourism which will limit the footprint of mass tourism while generating income for local people. In addition to combining tourism development and management at our five action sites, we assisted with regional marketing efforts to promote eco-tourism opportunities.

When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate?

Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long-term, They will also experience fear.

Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they associate you with this emotion of fear. They will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.

The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation (积极性). Today’s work place is all about relationships.

Anyone works harder in a positive environment in which they are recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the pay check is not the single most motivating factor (因素) in the work life of most people.

The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional intelligence—knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.

32.An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when ________.

A. he is forced to do thing                           B. he cannot work at his best

C. he feels his brain shut down                    D. he thinks of his work as too heavy

33.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. People tend to associate leadership with fear.

B. Working conditions affect people’s physical health.

C. Good relationship is the key to business success.

D. Smart people are more functional in the work place.

34.To positively influence employees a leader should first of all ________.

A. provide better suggestions                       B. develop his own personality

C. give his employees a pay rise                   D. hide his own emotion of fear

35.Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to ________.

A. provide a good working environment

B. help raise employee’s living standards

C. give employees specific instructions

D. deal wisely with employees’ emotions
