I was driving down the road the other day, listening to sweet music coming out of my car radio. My heart felt peaceful, my mind was clear, and my soul was full of love. Even with all its problems: life seemed good. Then the music stopped and the news came on. There was talk of another famous millionaire in drug rehab (康复) after an incident with the police. There was news on the murder of a poor man whose life was supposed to be changed after winning the lottery. There was even a discussion on how much greed and excess (放肆) had damaged our world.
Every story seemed to point once again to the old saying that money can't buy happiness. Hearing them made me think of a movie I saw many years ago on Mother Teresa's home for the dying in India. What struck me most when I watched it wasn't the unbearable poverty there. It wasn't the sickness and suffering that the people there were going through. It was rather the peaceful smiles of love, kindness, and happiness that they shared with the Sisters and with each other. These people had nothing. Many were struggling at the end of death. Yet, they knew the simple truth that so many of us here are still learning: Joy is Free.
We can have joy and spread joy every day of our life here. Don't love or admire dollar signs and think that money will bring you happiness then. Joy can't be purchased. It can't be owned. It can only be chosen and then given freely to others. In the eyes of eternity (永恒), money is only worthless paper. The only thing that matters is the love within you and the love that you give to the world. Make that your legacy (遗产) and your life will forever be rich in joy.

A new study revealed that the formation of the Earth, Sun and Moon that cause changes in Earth's tides can also trigger a special kind of Earthquake along the California's San Andreas Fault(断层).
The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science,is based on previous researcher suggesting that the gravitational tug of sun and moon is not only affecting the sea levels of Earth, but can also stretch and compress that Earth's crust, producing tremors and quakes. Furthermore, the new study showed that small tremors deep underground were more likely to occur during certain periods of the tidal cycle.
For the study, the researchers looked at about 81,000 lowfrequency earthquakes from 2008 to 2015 along the Parkfield section of the San Andreas Fault and compared it to the twoweek tidal cycle known as the “fortnightly tide”. Lowfrequency earthquakes are named due to the rumbling sound they make and not by the rate of its occurrence. These kinds of earthquake only occur about 15 to 30 kilometers below ground and are no larger than magnitude 1 in the Richter scale.
The researchers discovered that lowfrequency earthquakes tend to occur during the waxing period of the tidal cycle, when the tides are getting little by little. It is already known that the strongest Earth tides occur when the sun and moon are in a straight line, while the tide is at its weakest state when the sun and moon are 90 degrees apart.
According to the researchers, lowfrequency earthquakes show that some part of the San Andreas Fault is creeping, or slowly moving, almost all the time. With the help of the tidal forces, lowfrequency earthquakes could provide more information about the deeper part of the fault.
“They tell us that the fault continues down below where the regular or typical earthquakes stop on the San Andreas, about 10 or 12 km (about 6 to 7 miles),” said David Shelly, a seismologist at USGS and helped write the study, in a statement. “And they tell us a lot of things about that deep part of the fault that we had no idea existed at all before.”
“It's almost like having a lot of little creep meters embedded in the fault,” Shelly said. “We can use these lowfrequency earthquakes as measurements of, at least in a relative sense, how much slip is happening at each little spot on the deep part of the fault where we see these events. When we don't see them, we don't know what's happening; we don't know whether it is slipping silently or not slipping at all.”
The information is incredibly useful, he added. Whenever the deep part of the fault slips, the stress gets transferred to the shallow part of the fault.
“So if all of a sudden, we saw that the deep part of the fault was slipping a huge amount, it might be an indication that there was an increased chance of having an earthquake come at the shallower part of the fault”, he said.
38. What causes tremors and quakes according to the passage?
A. The formation of the Earth, Sun and Moon.
B. The change of the sea levels of Earth.

C. the sun and moon are 90 degrees apart D. the San Andreas Fault moves slowly
41. According to Shelly, the most important function of the study is to ________.
A. find out where the typical earthquakes occur
B. indicate when the regular earthquakes occur
C. uncover how lowfrequency earthquakes occur
D. offer more information about the deeper part of the fault

“What’s that?” my ten-year-old daughter, Genie, asked. She’d caught me laughing at a piece of mail I’d just opened. “Wake-up service, $2.50 per call.” At the bottom was a phone number and a drawing of a rotary phone, like the one my great- aunt Sara had owned 40 years ago.
“Is that mail funny?” Genie asked.
“Not really,” I admitted. “It’s just outdated.”
“What’s a wake-up call?” She asked. I explained how, before smart-phones, people sometimes paid someone to wake them with a call.
“Who sent this flyer(传单)?” she pressed.
“Probably someone older,” I said.
Her eyes lit up. “Can we order a wake-up?” she asked.
“We don’t need it.” I picked it up and headed for the recycling bin.
“Wait!” she screamed. “I feel sorry for the wake-up man, if he needs some money,” she said, tearing up. “Can’t we order?”
I looked at the flyer with its drawing of a rotary phone. I remembered, again, my great-aunt Sara and her rotary phone. As a kid, I’d visited her over Labor Day, when Jerry Lewis would host his charity event for the disabled kids. Aunt Sara would squeeze my hand, then reach for the rotary phone, dialing the number on the screen. Holding the receiver between us, we’d announce to the operator, “We’d like to help those kids.”
Now here was my own child, showing the same big heart I’d once been encouraged to have, and how could I ignore her? I googled the flyer’s return address. The address belonged to a man called Raymond. He was in his mid-60s. We called him and, holding the receiver between us, the way Aunt Sara and I used to, told him we needed his services. “Great!” Raymond said in a shaky but friendly voice, clearly amazed at receiving an order from a child.
Genie was happy all week.
Technology has made some things outdated. But there are still other things the world will always require. In the rush of my daily life, I’d temporarily forgotten that, I guess I just needed a wake-up call.
24. Why did Genie beg to order the service?
A. She was afraid of being late.
B. She wanted to help the old man.
C. She was curious about the service.
D. She was interested in the rotary phone.
25. What made the author finally decide to order a wake-up call?
A. Her own childhood experience.
B. The less fortunate wake-up man.
C. Genie’s curiosity about the service.
D. The information she found on Google.
26. How did Raymond feel when receiving our order?
A. Excited. B. Disappointed. C. Doubtful. D. Regretful.
27. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. A Wake-up Man B. A Kindhearted Girl
C. The Wake-up Call D. The Rotary Phone
Anyone who has ever played the game of Tetris (俄罗斯方块) knows the game’s surreal ability to spill into real life. After you shut off the game, you still see those Tetris blocks falling in your mind. You're grocery shopping and find yourself thinking about rearranging items on grocery shelves. Your mind continues to play the game, even when you're physically not.
Robert Stickgold, a Harvard professor, noticed something similar after a day hiking a mountain. That night, he dreamt he was still going through the motions of mountain hiking. Curious about this, he tried something: he got a group of college students of various skill levels to play Tetris and let them sleep in the Harvard sleep lab.
Over 60% of the students, including those who suffered from amnesia (键忘症),reported dreams of images of Tetris pieces falling, rotating (旋转),and fitting together. Interestingly, half the Tetris expert students reported such Tetris dreams, while 75% of the beginners did.
A study found that playing Tetris can grow your brain and make it more efficient. Adolescent girls played the game for an average of 1.5 hours a week over three months. The cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) of the girls grew thicker, while brain activity in other areas decreased. Richard Haier, who had found that there was a "Tetris learning effect", in which the brain consumed less energy as mastery of the game rose, concluded, "The brain is learning which areas not to use."
Haier's study showed that as the girls practiced playing the game, nerve cells made connections, communicating through synapses (a synapse is a connection between two nerve cells). When you learn something, you change those connections. Every time you reactivate(激活) a circuit, synaptic efficiency increases, and connections become more durable and easier to reactivate. Stickgold says sleep plays a role in this memory process.
So to sum up, whenever you do specific tasks over and over again, they take up less of your brain power over time. And that’s pretty amazing.
5. What does the underlined part ‘surreal ability’ in the first paragraph mean?

B. The game can be applied to many aspects of life.
C. There are great similarities between the game and things in life.
D. The mind continues to play the game when we are doing other things.
6. What can we learn from Stickgold’s study?
A. More than half of the students dreamed of images of Tetris.
B. Students having bad memories didn’t dream of the game.
C. The Tetris expert students were more likely to dream of the game than the beginners.
D. More than half of the Tetris expert students didn’t dream of the game.

Many people associate crying with weakness. If a person easily breaks down, it gives the
36 that the person is soft and can easily be overpowered. But many do not know that tears have a purpose. It has a 37 after-effect on a person that can give comfort and strength to 38 any negative feeling or depression.
People cry for a reason. You may cry because you are too happy or too sad or very angry. Letting your tears flow freely gives you a sense of 39 to be true to your feelings and to yourself. It is a surrender (屈服) to your emotions that 40 you that you are human and you have the right to your emotions, 41 they are pleasant or not.
Just like water that washes off filth (污物), tears slowly wash off the 42 thoughts and feelings. That is why when you are in pain or in sorrow, do not 43 and let your tears roll down naturally. After a while you will 44 feel a bit better. Your tears become a form of 45 when problems become too much for us to bear.
In my opinion, people who are not afraid to cry 46 are stronger than those who control the tears for later. If the reason for crying is 47 and your emotions are very strong, you have no reason to be ashamed.
Tears can make you stronger in a way. When faced with a problem, people who control their tears 48 to constantly worry and stress about the problem and fail to see the 49 right away. This makes them more prone (易于…的) to weakness and to more mistakes. These people may 50 strong because they hide what they truly feel. But the truth is, all the pretensions make them a weaker person.
On the other hand, people who openly 51 themselves to cry release their emotions much sooner. After crying, these people feel more 52 and can then begin to think straight. 53 the negative thoughts and emotions have been reduced, they can 54 think of ways to solve the problem.
As the saying goes, “The truth shall set you free.” Tears show others your true emotions. Your true strength is using your tears to easily 55 your moment of suffering. That is the power of tears.

Tchaikovsky, a famous Russian composer of the late-Romantic period, was born on 7 May 1840 in the mountains of western Russia. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. Tchaikovsky’s training set him on a path to combine what he had learned with the native musical practices to which he had been exposed from childhood. He first helped write a song in 1844, at an age when most children are still in kindergarten. At home, his mother sang folk songs, which helped develop his interest in music. Mozart was Tchaikovsky’s favourite composer and he influenced Tchaikovsky’s life and work. For 11 years, beginning in 1866, Tchaikovsky taught at the Moscow School of Music. During his time there, he wrote music for the piano, along with ballets, operas and symphonies. He was famous for writing the music for the ballet Swan Lake in 1876. Because of his musical talent, Tchaikovsky toured many countries as a conductor, including a voyage to the USA in 1891. He continued to write for the ballet until his death in Saint Petersburg in 1893.

Who decided that blue jeans and T-shirts are “cool” for kids to wear today? Who designs the clothes you see for sale in stores? All of these questions concern the world of fashion.
Fashion refers to the styles of dress that are currently popular. Fashion goes beyond just clothes, though. It’s important for some people to wear only the latest fashions and styles. For others, though, keeping up with trends isn’t that important. The one thing that stays the same with fashion is this: it always changes!
In the 1960s and 1970s, hippies made bell-bottomed blue jeans popular. In the 1980s, Michael Jackson made parachute pants (降落伞裤) all the fashion. Now try to find these items in today’s clothing stores!
Why do fashions change? The answer is probably as simple as the fact that people change. Over time,
The stars of popular culture are always searching for a new angle to maintain (保持) their popularity. Often these new angles come in the form of new clothing or hairstyles. When people see these new styles, they often want to imitate their favorite stars. To do so, they seek out the latest fashions to make themselves look like the people they want to imitate. In this way, fashions evolve and change over time.
For years, clothes have been used to separate people into groups. Even today, brand-name clothing that is more expensive than other types of clothing can be used by some people to distinguish themselves from others.
Unfortunately, this can often have the effect of distancing certain groups from others. Don’t forget that it’s always OK to develop your own sense of style that is unique and separate from what the fashion world determines! Stay true to yourself and let your personality — not your clothes — speak for who you are!

C. the good influences of popular styles D. the importance of having one’s own personality
20. We can learn from the text that _____.
A. fashion is all about clothes B. the author has gone out of fashion
C. clothes may separate and distance people D. people like imitating others’ dressing style
Bullying(欺负) in school is a problem for many staff as well as pupils, according to a teachers’ union survey. The bullies are often other teachers who pick on their colleagues—with heads and senior staff bully most often. The survey says about a quarter of teachers have been bullied by another member of staff.
The survey of more than 900 primary, secondary, and further-education staff across the UK, showed that many teachers faced a range of workplace-bullying threats.
But among the teachers who felt they had been bullied, 50% said it was by a senior member of staff, compared with 25% by pupils and 23% by parents.
“I didn’t report it as the person bullying was the head teacher,” said a primary school teacher.
“I was driven from a previous job by a head teacher. She lashes out(痛斥) at everybody around her,” said a secondary school teacher.
Another teacher, a head of department in an academy, said: “following a poor set of results my whole department have been spoken to again. As a result two are leaving and others would if they could.”
The survey looked at the type of bullying that these teachers had faced from pupils, parents and fellow teachers. The most widespread forms of bullying were “negative comments” and verbal insults(口头侮辱).But almost half of bullying victims claimed they had been threatened and two in five reported “mental abuse.” There was physical violence in just under 2% of cases.
The union’s general secretary, Mary Bousted, warned that schools needed to have policies in place to protect staff from workplace bullying.
“It is unacceptable for any staff to be bullied by colleagues, and schools and colleges need robust (稳健的) policies in place to pick up any problems and deal with them immediately. It is not good enough to just deal with the symptoms(症状); schools and colleges also need to deal with the cause of the bullying,” said Ms. Bousted.

One cold night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home around one o’clock in the morning after a 36 practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week 37 , I was still learning my lines by heart. I was having 38 handling my part-time job at the bank in the daytime and my 39 at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about 40 both acting and San Francisco. I had 41 too much of city life.
As I walked down the 42 streets under the tall buildings, I felt very small and 43 , so I began 44 both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were 45 out except a few homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my 46 , I heard a sound behind me. I 47 quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife 48 a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me 49 , so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I 50 what the noise had been. It had been my wallet 51 to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk 52 for 15 minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to quit the 53 , I heard the garbage truck stop to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice came from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened and out jumped a small blonde man with an 54 look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” He asked, holding up a wallet.
It was already 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I couldn’t get much sleep, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some 55 of city life. I realized the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

What is a fair wage? 26 These are some of the questions the United Nations International Labour Organization(ILO) has recently investigated.
With a global population of over seven billion, is it actually possible to measure an average amount? 27 Using the total wage bill from over seventy countries, they have multiplied the amounts by the number of earners in each country. The economists then tallied up the results and divided them by the total number across the world. The result was a world average wage equivalent to $1,490 a month. 28
This figure might seem very high because they calculated the amount using purchasing power parity dollars, which takes into account the fact that it is cheaper to live in some countries than others. 29 .
Calculating an average sum like this might not be a completely fair representation, but these figures do help us to understand how the world is developing , both economically, in the quality of life people are experiencing and their standard of living.
But the result shows that the average wage is still relatively low and there remains a huge difference in levels of affluence around the world. 30 Is this fair? For many, pay equality still seems very far out of reach.
A. The ILO has now tried to work out the sums.
B. The ILO used statistics from over 70 different countries.
C. Why aren’t more people in the world offered pay equality?
D. That is approximately $75 a day for a 20-day working month.

G. The data also did not include the huge number of people who appear in poverty statistics
or who are selfemployed.
How to Say No to Your Boss
Saying “no” to a request can be a difficult thing, especially when the person making the request is your boss.16. The following steps are helpful.
Give yourself some time to think about the request before saying “no”.
If the request arrives via email, don’t reply right away.
17. If your boss asks you in person or on the telephone, request some time to give it thought and tell her you will get back to her by a specific time. Consider the request carefully to determine whether you have to say “no”.
Prepare your answer before telling your boss “no”.
Anticipate questions she might ask in response to your answer, and decide how you want to answer them. Rehearse your conversation with your boss out loud to help build your confidence before the real conversation.
Choose the right time and place to speak with your boss.
Have the conversation in private if your work situation allows you to get a moment alone with your boss. Keep in mind your boss’s workday pressures and work style. If she is a morning person and gets grumpy(脾气暴躁的)in the afternoon, be sure to speak with her before lunch.
18.
If your boss is asking you to take on more responsibility, that shows that she has faith in your ability to do the job. Acknowledge that it means a lot to you before telling her that you feel you cannot do it.
Tell your boss why you have to say “no” to the request.
19. Your boss will be grateful that you answered honestly, rather than trying to take on a project you cannot handle.
Offer an alternative solution.
For example, if your boss asks you to serve on a committee, suggest someone else in the company that you think may be interested and capable of serving.20
A. Pay your boss a compliment while denying her request.
B. Even if you try your best to do everything the boss lets you do, there are times when you can’t do and have to say “no”.
C. Put yourself in your boss’s shoes and consider how the company will be affected if you refuse the request.
D. Maybe you could offer to share the workload with someone else.
E. Most employers respect honesty in their employees.
F. Try a compromise.
G. Set the request aside and think about it for a while.
Have you fallen into a pattern of sleeping poorly? 36 Getting a good night sleep is very important to your physical and emotional health. Here are some simple actions and choices you can make right now to help you sleep better at night.
1.Avoid coffee, smoke, and alcohol. If you want coffee in the afternoon or evening, drink less.An alcohol drink, especially more than one, will not help you sleep better.A drink may,or may not, help you fall asleep, but alcohol causes you to sleep poorly and be unable to sleep all night, 37
2.Don’t overeat, but don’t go to bed hungry. If you aren’t tired of milk, try a small glass of warm milk or a piece of mild cheese in the evening.A small piece of chicken or other protein may also work well before bed. 38
3. 39 It can help you avoid lacking water and is generally good for your health. However, avoid water and other fluids for the last two hours before bedtime to reduce your need to go to the bathroom during the night.
4.Make your bedroom as quietly as you can. 40 Consider using earplugs(耳塞) if your bedroom is noisy. Some people find that the white noise from a fan,as well as the air flow, helps them sleep better.Others find soft music or natural sounds like waves or bird songs to be relaxing and contribute to sleep. If you use music to help you fall asleep, you may find that you get better rest later in the night if you set the music to turn off after an hour.
A.Drink enough water early in the day.
B.If you have a clock that ticks loudly, replace it.
C.If you drink too much water, you will feel bad.
D.Don’t have your stomach empty before going to bed.
E.Are you concerned that you may not sleep well tonight?
F.Are you always worried about what you eat in the evening?
G.Cigarettes are always an unhealthy habit, especially in the evening.
Alibaba started taking the lead in China by connecting big Chinese manufacturers(制造商) with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allowed business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage wasn’t hard to judge: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its market attracts 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year — and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.
If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it? ” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.
Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is second to consumer buying. Chinese retail(零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall.com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices.
What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big-box retailers especially —in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.
I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.

A Canine (犬科的) Reading Partner
Dogs and people have developed a special bond over time. Recently, however, some dogs have taken a different role in people’s lives—therapy dogs. 36 Some therapy dogs visit patients in hospitals or nursing homes, while others visit children in schools and libraries. They are there to help children become better readers.
Reading programs that use therapy dogs have been in existence for more than ten years. All therapy dogs of this program are registered with an organization that tests the dogs to make sure they have the right personality for the job. 37 Both the dogs and the handlers are volunteers with the reading program.
At the start of a reading therapy session, a child and a dog are introduced. The pair is allowed to settle down in a quiet corner together. 38 An adult handler stays nearby but generally lets the dog perform its job without interfering (干涉). Sometimes, a handler may ask a question that encourages the child to work with the dog to help the child feel more comfortable.
Not every child will be able to be part of a reading therapy program that uses dogs. A few children might be allergic to dogs or afraid of them; some children might have cultural traditions that prevent them from touching a dog. 39
Reading therapy programs inspire learning and change. 40 They spend time with human friends. For dogs that love human companionship and a quiet place to rest, being part of a reading therapy program can be a great way to spend a few hours each day. The readers benefit too, gaining confidence and learning that reading aloud can be a relaxing experience.
A. How do the therapy dogs benefit from it?
B. But therapy animals also serve in many other areas.
C. As the child reads, the dog usually lies quietly and listens.
D. When reading to an animal, some children may become relaxed.
E. In these circumstances, other animals are available, such as cats and parrots.
F. A therapy dog is more of a companion and is trained to help people in different ways.
G. A dog’s handler also takes a class and must pass a test to work in the therapy program.
