Next time you need directions, maybe you can ask an ant. These little creatures are masters of navigation(导航)that some can find their way home whether they're walking forward or backward, according to a study in Current Biology.

Ants often travel long to bring back the food to their nests. But how do they know where they’re going?

Researchers went to Spain to mess with some desert ants. They found an active nest and surrounded it with barriers that forced the foraging(搜寻)ants to follow a particular path back home.Once the ants were familiar with the maze, the researchers would take them up,hand them pieces of a cookie and then put them back in a different location, one that required taking a 90 degree turn to get to the nest.

The research found that the ants carrying a small,easy-to-carry piece would run forward with confidence and were able to head on home. Some ants, however, would drop the cookie and turn around to take a look at the scenery, which allowed the six-legged experts to reset their inner maps, catch their cookies and head in the right direction.

These ants seem to use sky clues, like the position of the sun,to keep them on track. When the researchers used a mirror to make it look like the sun on the other side of the sky,the cornered ants would turn tail for the opposite direction.

So ants integrate(整合)a lot of information to successfully bring home the food.

A. To get over the man-made barriers.

B. To enjoy the scenery along the route.

C. To ensure they're in the right direction.

D. To check directions with their maps.

14. According to the passage, what probably helps the ants find their way home?

A. The position of the sun.    B. One particular path.

C. A 90 degree turn.    D. Pieces of a cookie.

15. Where does this passage probably come from?

A. An adventure novel.    B. A geography textbook.

C. A science magazine.    D. A tourist brochure.

In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略).

One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food later in their trip. In department stores, the women's shoe section is generally next to the women's cosmetics(化妆品) section: while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.

Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers' senses, Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.

When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses.

33. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy?

A. Opening the store early in the morning.

B. Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.

C. Inviting customers to play music.

D. Displaying British wines next to French ones.

34.What is the California builder's story intended to prove?

A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider.

B. A good first impression increases sales.

C. An ocean view is much to the customers' taste.

D. The more costly the house is, the better it sells.

35. what is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To report researches on customer behavior.

B. To introduce how businesses have grown from the past.

C. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers

D. To show dishonest business practices.

What is superpower in your opinion? What superpower would you want to have if possible?

Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.

Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world.

They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others.

We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?

Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about  how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.

25. Why does the author say they are inspired every day?

   A. They possess different kinds of superpowers

   B. They have got the power to change the world

   C. Some people around the mare making the world better

   D. There are many powerful people in their life and work

26. What does the author stress in Paragraph 5?’

   A. Learning more and contributing more to a cause

   B. Rising above self and acting to help others.

   C. Working hard to get a bigger opportunity

   D. Trying your best to help the poor

27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

   A. The author believes the lives of the poorest will get better

   B. Much more progress will be made in the near future

   C. The work on health is the most valuable experience

   D. People’s efforts have been materially rewarded

Most British telephone cards are just plain green, but card collecting is becoming a popular hobby in Britain and collectors even have their own magazine, International Telephone Cards. One reason for their interest is that cards from around the world come in a wide variety of different and often very attractive designs. There are 100,000 different cards in Japan alone, and there you can put your own design onto a blank card simply by using a photograph or a business card.
The first telephone cards, produced in 1976, were Italian. Five years later the first British card appeared, and now you can buy cards in more than a hundred countries.                          People usually start collecting cards mainly because they are attractive, small and light, and they do not need much space. It is also a cheap hobby for beginners, although for some people it becomes a serious business. In Paris, for example, there is a market where you can buy only telephone cards, and some French cards cost up to 4,000 pounds. The first Japanese card has a value of about 28,000 pounds. Most people only see cards with prices like these in their collectors’ magazine.

We all know the saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and the fact that there are a whole lot of strangelooking people out there happily loved up would suggest that it's true. But scientists have now performed the biggest test so faranalyzing the preferences of more than 35,000 peopleand have shown that we really do all have a unique “type”

In factthe study showed that even identical twinswho share nearly l00 percent of their DNA, aren't attracted to the same peoplesuggesting that it's our experiencesmore than our genesthat determine whether we find someone hot or not.

“We estimate that an individual's aesthetic(审美的)preferences for faces agree about 50 percentand disagree about 50 percentwith others” explained Laura Germine from Harvard Universityand Jeremy Wilmer of Wellesley Collegelead researchers of the project.

This fits with the phenomenon that on one handfashion models can make a fortune with their good lookswhile on the other handfriends can endlessly debate about who is attractive and who is not“they added.”Of coursethere are some things that people seem to find pretty much universally pleasant to look ate.g.most people prefer faces that are symmetric(对称的)But after analyzing the facial preferences of more than 35,000 volunteers, the researchers found thatit was experiences that seemed to be what shape the “eye of the beholder”And those experiences are highly specific to each individual.

So in other wordsit's not your familywhere you grew upor how much money your parents make that shape who you're attracted toit's things like the magazines you read, the social activities you've take part inand even your first boyfriend or girlfriendthat determine these preferences.

32What does the underlined word “identical” in Para 2 mean?

Aunique      Bsame      Cdistinguishing     Dconsiderate

33Why does the writer talk about the “fashion model”

ATo tell us they own beautiful faces which help them earn money.

BTo emphasize they have symmetric faces which people widely enjoy.

CTo show people's preference for faces partly agree and disagree.

DTo explain the role genes play in people's preference.

34Which of the following statements agrees with the theme of the passage?

ASymmetric faces look beautiful in eastern culture but not in western culture.

BThe more beautiful a person looksthe more likely he is to get a success.

CA person's aesthetic preferences for beauty will remain the same in the future.

DSome think the movie star Huang Xiaoming handsome while some don't think so.

35What is the title of the passage?

AGene preference or social preference?

BDifficult to meet every taste.

CBeauty is in the eye of beholder

DLove melove my dog?

When we were kids, my little sister Madison and I were the M&Ms my parents’ two daughters.   36   So it was quite a surprise when my mom and dad sat us down to let us know that baby number three was on the way when I was 10 years old. However, as soon as my brother Mac was born, he completely stole my heart and I have learned a few things from having a young brother.

  37

Having a baby in your life means watching your parents endlessly change diapers (尿布), make bottles, and wipe spit-ups every once in a while. I was allowed to do those things and I learned just how important it was to take care of this little life before I even hit middle school.

You watch a child grow up.

38   I remember how excited my family was when we discovered how fast of a reader he was in kindergarten. I’ll never forget telling him bedtime stories before he went to sleep at night. It’s cool to think about the entirety of his life and how far he has come.

You teach your brother life lessons.

From a young age, my brother watched my sister and me overcome personal challenges, go to high school, and, worst of all, get our hearts broken.   39   Watching his sisters go through life’s difficulties has taught him how he should act when he gets older.

Now Mac is 11 years old. I have no shame in telling people that one of my best friends is an 11-year-old boy. In fact, our family without him is unimaginable.   40

A. You stay in the know.

B. You learn about responsibility early on.

C. We received a lot of attention, and we liked it that way.

D. All I can say is that my family wouldn’t be happy without Mac.

E. I remember the first time Mac crawled, walkedand said my name.

F. Thanks, Mom and Dad, for turning the M&Ms into the Three Musketeers.

G. Nothing makes Mac more upset than a mean guy who hurts a girl’s feelings.

Our papers are printed on only one side, which causing much waste. It’s time we did something to avoid this kind of waste. Firstly, make sure that all the lights and other electric facilities turned off when we leave the room. Try to form the habit of turning off the tap immediate after using it. What’s more, papers should be printed on both sides and reuse if possible.

Tips on buying outdoor solar lights(太阳能灯)

As solar lighting is becoming useful for homes, many different such outdoor lights can now be found in supermarkets. Here are some helpful tips for customers.

Does your area receive enough direct lighting?

36 So you shouldn't even give it a thought if you live in an area that doesn't get much sunlight. These lights need direct sunlight,or they just won't work very well. 37

The expensive one usually means good quality Choosing the cheapest ones will result in many problems. For once,it's best to buy more expensive lights of high quality.38 At least you should know the difference between a $10 light and a $45 light.

Buy lights that require less installation(安装)

Most solar lights are simply driven into the ground.Therefore.you shouldn't deal with the difficulty in installing a system that involves anything more than that.39 You don't need to buy lights that require half an hour each to plant into the ground because that's just a waste of time.

Make sure the lights can store enough energy.

Different solar lights can store different amounts of energy.40 Therefore, you should choose lights that are able to store enough energy to last for a few hours or more,at least those that will last from nightfall throughout most of the night and part of the morning.

When I stepped out the plane from Miami into Charlotte, North Carolina, airport for a connecting flight home, I immediately knew something was wrong. Lots of desperate people crowded the terminal. I quickly learned that flights headed to the Northeast were called off because of a storm. The earliest they could get us out of Charlotte was Tuesday. It was Friday. A gate agent stood on the counter and shouted, “Don’t ask us for help! We cannot help you!”

I joined a crowd that ran from terminal to terminal in search of a flight out. Eventually, I found six strangers willing to rent a van with me. We drove through the night to Washington, where I took a train the rest of the way to Providence.

The real problem, of course, is that incidents like this happen every day, to everyone who flies, more and more often. It really gets to me, though, because for eight years I was on the other side, as a flight attendant for Trans-World Airlines(TWA).

I know the days are gone when attendants could be written up if we did not put the lines napkins with the TWA logo in the lower right-hand corner of the first-class diners’ trays. As are the days when there were three dinner options on flights from Boston to Los Angeles in economy class. When, once, stuck on a tarmac (机场停机坪) in Newark for four hours, a planeload of passengers got McDonald’s hamburgers and fries by thoughtfulness of the airline.

I have experienced the decline of service along with the rest of the flying public. But I believe everything will change little by little, because I remember the days when to fly was to soar (翱翔). The airlines, and their employees, took pride in how their passengers were treated. And I think the days are sure to come back one day in the near future.

74.   Many people crowded the terminal because ________.

A. they were ready to board on the planes

     B. something was wrong with the terminal

     C. the flights to the Northeast were canceled

     D. the gate agent wouldn’t help the passengers

75. The writer got to Providence ________ at last.

     A. by air             B. by van           C. by train          D. by underground

76. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?

     A. Incidents happened to those who fly quite often.

     B. The writer used to be a flight attendant for Trans-World Airlines.

     C. Even a small mistake might cause complaints from passengers in the past.

     D. McDonald’s hamburgers and fries were among regular dinner options.

77. What can be implied from the passage?

     A. The writer lived in Charlotte, North Carolina.

     B. The writer thought the service was not as good as it used to be.

     C. The writer with other passengers waited to be picked up patiently.

     D. Passengers would feel proud of how they were treated on the plane.
