As we all know, the same body language may have different meaning in different cultures. If we don’t use body language proper, we may be misunderstanding.

Last year I have a holiday in Thailand. I was walking in the street while I saw a boy fall down. I quickly ran over, helped him stand up and patted him head. Surprisingly he seemed very much angry and walked away. I had meant to comfort him with the way we Chinese usually do. Later, know that it’s impolite to pat a child’s head in Thailand, I felt embarrassed.

Obviously body language is important part of international communication.

Job Interviews

You have the education and the work experience; now all you need is the job. Most people spend more time getting ready for an evening out than they do preparing for a job interview. There are several things you can do to have a successful job interview. Here are some of them:

1. Know about the company where you are trying to get a job. Find out what the company does and who their competitors(竞争者) are.

2. Know yourself. Most interviewers will ask a question related to your strengths and weaknesses. Before the interview, examine the job you are applying for and determine the top skills needed for that position. For instance, if you are applying for a job as a telephone operator, it’s more important that you have strong communication skills than that you are tidy.

3. Have proof. It’s easy to say you have good organization skills. But if you can tell the interviewer about a time you organized an event, it makes the claim much more solid.

4. Prepare questions to ask about the company and the job.

An interview is a stressful event. When you are under pressure, it can be difficult to think straight. Preparing before the interview will make it easier to give answers to those tough questions. But you can’t think of every question they might ask. So relax and be confident. Remember, first impressions are lasting.

4. A good skill for a telephone operator to have is ________.

    A. the ability to smile                      B. tidiness

    C. good communication skills           D. proof of past experience

5. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. The job interview should be conducted over the telephone.

B. The first time the interviewer sees you is important.

C. You shouldn’t ask questions about the company.

D. You shouldn’t give examples of things you have done in the past.

6. This article is about ________.

A. how to get a job interview            B. how to communicate at work

C. how to prepare for a job interview.     D. how to interview people

Twelve years ago, I was a 19 -year-old guy living in the French A1ps. In February 2004, while skiing the back - country in Val d’Isere, I fell off the mountain, resulting in a right leg broken in several pieces. I was helicoptered to hospital, operated on immediately—and there started my adult life.

Before the accident, I was on a path to what I hoped would be a career in rugby. After-wards, and participation in collision sport was gone. I found a replacement in cycling. Unfortunately, by late 2012, I tried to cycle up Mount Ventoux, but it was halfway up when the pain hit me and I gave up.

A decision needed to be made on a next step. I had to have my lower right leg cut off. Several months later, I had my first proper weight - bearing prosthetic (假肢). I jumped on a train with my bike to Mount Ventoux. Though it certainly wasn’t my quickest, I did it.

Two weeks later, I was lucky enough to be given a running blade; I bounced on it that day and then raced my triathlon (三项全能) on the Monday. So, that was me, up and running - almost 12 years since I had last run.

Along with my running coach, I complete a “make every kilometre count” programme of four runs per week alongside a busy cycle, swim and gym schedule. So far this year, I have raced a 10k with an unexpected personal best in January of 38:04. I have my first speed triathlon in late March before heading to North Korea to compete in the Pyongyang Marathon on 10 April.

If my lifetime allows, I will attempt to race in every country in the world. In the meantime, I’ll keep on running — and, when it hurts and I’ m low on motivation, I’ll remember how far I’ve come and how much further I’ve got to go.

4. What had been the author’s special interest before the accident?

A. Skiing.    B. Running.

C. Cycling.    D. Rugby.

5. How was the author, s second try of cycling up Mount Ventoux?

A. He fell off and was seriously hurt.

B. He gave up because of great pain.

C. He was the quickest to get to the top.

D. He succeeded in getting to the top.

6. What is the author’s wish?

A. To race all over the world.

B. To participate in collision sport.

C. To cycle up Mount Ventoux again.

D. To compete in the Pyongyang Marathon.

7. Which of the following word best describes the author?

A. Enthusiastic.    B. Considerate.

C. Determined.    D. Generous.

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?

UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”.

Nitrogen and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi真菌networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons神经元in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.

Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.

“We didn't take any notice of it.” Simard says sadly . “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them a chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.

28. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans

B. Young Trees Are In Need Of Protection

C. Trees Are More Complex Than You Think

D. Trees Contribute To Our Society

29. In Simard's opinion, trees _______ .

A. depend on each other           B. protect their own wealth

C. compete for survival            D. provide support for dying trees

30. We can learn from the passage that

A. “mother trees” are usually of no use to other trees.

B. Charles Darwin had the same thought as Simard.

C. people know much about the complex “tree societies”.

D. if “mother trees” are cut down, the survival for the entire forest will be affected.

31. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to .

A. how trees grow old

B. how “tree societies” work

C. how forestry industry develops

D. how young trees survive

Homeopathy is the oldest form of complementary(互补的)and alternative medicines from Europe. It originated with the German physician Samuel Hahnemann (17551843). He came across the cinchona, the bark of a South American tree that was used by the local people to treat fevers. Among the active ingredients in the bark is quinine(奎宁), which is still used to treat malaria. If a healthy person took cinchona, he or she would have symptoms (症状) of malaria. In 1796 and 1810, Hahnemann published essays on the theories of homeopathy: substances that cause illnesses or symptoms in people can be used in small doses as treatment. Supporters of homeopathy viewed it as a safe, patient-centered system. Hahnemann claimed he could cure any and all illnesses using homeopathic principles.

However, the Australian council sought to evaluate this claim once and for all. Their assessment was based on the analysis of 57 published systematic reviews encompassing 176 individual studies, independent evaluation of evidence provided by homeopathy interest groups and the public, and clinical practice guidelines and reports on homeopathy from other governments. Studies were only considered if they were case-controlled, meaning they compared a group of patients receiving homeopathic treatments with a control group. The council who oversaw this review consisted of experts in conventional-based medicine as well as complementary and alternative medicines. As a guideline, for a treatment to be considered effective, it must result in health improvements that cannot be explained by the placebo (安慰剂) effect, these improvements must be meaningful for a person’s overall health and the results have to be seen consistently in several studies. A draft of the report was reviewed by a group of independent experts in complementary medicine research and opened up for public consultation before it was finalized.

Eventually, the council found no reliable evidence that homeopathic treatments were effective. Studies that did find homeopathy to be effective were overall of poor scientific quality, used too few patients or lacked evidence on which to base their conclusions. Rejecting proven medical treatments in favor of homeopathy for chronic or potentially serious conditions could place people at risk. As always, use of homeopathic or other remedies should be discussed with your physician in order to make informed healthcare decisions.

58. We can learn from the passage that homeopathy is a system of medicine in which __________.

A. patients are given very small amounts of a drug that produces symptoms in healthy people

C. patients would have symptoms of malaria if they took cinchona

D. patients relying on homeopathy can explain their health improvements by the placebo effect

It was a  cold  night in washington, D.C. and I was heading back to the  hotel when a  man approached  me. He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. I'd read the signs: “Don't give money to baggers.” So I shook my head and kept walking.with helplessness,he said,”I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!” But still  I kept on walking.

The incident bothered me for the rest of the week. In fact ,I had money in my pocket and it wouldn’t have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he had been lying. On a freezind  cold night,  I still wondered what would happen to a hungry man.

Flying back to my hometown,Anchorage, I couldn't help thinking of him. I tried to seek  excuses for failure to help. After all, government agencies, churches, and charities were there to feed him. Besides, you're not supposed to give money to beggars.

But I Just  couldn't forget the incident and began to think I  must do something ,At that time, I was writing a garden column(专栏)for the local Daily News.Suddenly ,I came up with an idea. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens devoted to Bean's Cafe, the  soup kitchen which has volunteered to feed hundreds of hungry people every day for many years?

Before long my idea took off. People would fax me or call when they took something in.Food was sent by different warm-hearted people and even those who only grew flowers donated them .Food for the spirit, which comforted me a lot.

As more and more people started working with the Plant a Row concept, many companies gave free seeds to customers and displayed the logo, which also arose in national gardening   publications. Row markers  with the Plant a Row logo were distributed to gardeners to set apart their “Row for the Hungry” .

It is unexpected that millions of Americans are threatened by hunger. If every gardener in America and we're seventy million strong plants one row for the hungry, we can lower the number of neighbors who don’t have enough to eat. Maybe then I will stop feeling guilty about abandoning a hungry man I could have helped.

Happy Shakespeare Day!

The 23rd April is World Book Day, but did you know that it is also Shakespeare Day? Everybody has heard of Shakespeare, but do you know many plays he wrote? Have you hear of many of his poetry?

Shakespeare’s plays fit into three categories:  tragedies, comedies and histories. Perhaps his most famous play is the tragie story of Romeo and Juliet, which deals with two young lovers who are forbidden to marry by their parents. Other tragedies include Hamlet, a play about a vengeful ghost Othello, about an army general who is manipulated(操纵)into killing his wife, and Macbeth(麦克白). If you’ve seen Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban written which is sung in the Great Hall after the Sorting Ceremony. These words come from the Witches in Macbeth!

Shakespeare’s comedies include Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night is a play about confusing identities. Two twins are shipwrecked and the sister, Viola, dresses up as her brother, Sebastian, who she thinks is dead. It’s hilarious, because the brother reappears without Viola realizing and there’s a big love triangle going on: Viola is in love with the Duke Osino, who is in love with Olivia, who falls in love with Sebastian, except she doesn’t realize that Sebastian is actually Viola dressed up! Everybody falls in love with the wrong person, but it is all made right in the end.

The history plays, such as Antony and Cleopatra, Richard III and Henry V are based on the lives of real historical people. Antony and Cleopatra is a story about a doomed romance in ancient Egypt. Cleopatra becomes Antony’s mistress and Antony becomes so obsessed with her that he loses his military might. Cleopatra kills self by letting a snake bite her after Egypt’s army has been defeated by Octavius and Antony kills himself too.

Shakespeare’s plays can be very heavy going sometimes. Some of the themes they deal with are heavy and complex, so they almost always contain a lighter subplot with characters who aren’t closely linked to the characters in the main plot. They are often used in tragedies to lighten the mood of the play and to keep the audience interested in the main plot.

33. What can we learn about Shakespeare’s tragedies?

A. Romeo and Juliet is perhaps the most famous play of all time

B. Hamlet tells us a story of two young lovers dead in the end

C. The army general Othello kills his wife in person purposely

D. Macbeth gives J.K. Rowling some inspiration in her writing

34. What is not a probable ending in Twelfth Night?

A. Viola and Sebastian reunited    B. Osino and Viola got marred

C. Osino and Olivia got married    D. Sebastian and Olivia got married

35. Characters in the lighter subplot of Shakespeare’s plays are often used to_____.

A. deal with the heavy and complex themes

B. distinguish the characters in the main plot

C. make the mood of the play softer than before

D. interest the audience in the subplot to the great extent

Claire knew that Gladys thought she was having an         .

A. affair    B. assistant   C. aspect   D. attraction

It’s amazing how we grow from careless kids to responsible teens. What happens in the course that makes us responsible now? It’s the seed that we sow in the beginning which grows and becomes a huge tree. As I sit here, silently thinking about my growth, I wonder over some questions which don’t have an answer but it’s because of such unanswerable situations that life has become a roller coaster ride.

As a kid, I used to read a lot of story books. In one particular book, I read a story of a bird. From then on, that has become an integral (必不可少的) part of my life. It described a male bird which takes a lot of pain to build a nest and the female bird takes shelter in it and nourishes the baby. When the bird learns to fly, the whole family flies off to a different place leaving behind the beautiful nest for other birds to grow their family in it. It made me wonder. How could they so easily sacrifice their house built with so much effort?

One night, when I was deep in sleep, I got this particular dream. I was walking miles on the endless road, totally isolated but lined with beautiful trees on the either side. Fascinated by the greenery, I marched towards it only to end up deeper and deeper into the greenery. I happened to stop upon seeing something. It was a massive, wonderful house. I fell in love with that amazing part of art. Yeah, it was indeed a piece of art with every nook and corner touched artistically and lovingly. I don’t know why I felt that it was done lovingly. Maybe because, things turn out to be beautiful only when we put our love into it just like the food prepared by mom which tastes more delicious with her love.

I explored the house only to fall more in love with it. There was a sloping roof which matched with the greenery around; the large central open courtyard reminded me of the activities that might have taken place there which felt lively even now when it is completely deserted. The small water body that kept the house cool added to the beauty of the house of course, it was all dried up now. It’s really wonderful how such things add life to the spaces which otherwise just become structures. Such liveliness and happening turns the house into a home. They say ‘THE HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS’, but now I began to feel it. This is where my heart belongs. This is what I’m destined to do.

When I woke up from the dream, I was clear about everything. I realized where that mile of walk was intending me to lead. I realized what message my dream wanted to convey me. And years later, when finally my turn of choosing my destination came, I simply closed my eyes, held that book in my hand, pressed it against my chest and relived the dream. When I opened my eyes, I was sure what to do. I decided to choose the road less traveled. Yes, I took up architecture as my profession because this is what I am destined to do. I wanted to do the same thing that the male bird in the story did, to take pain in building a beautiful house and let others stay in it. This is my dream come true and the happiness that I gain now from this profession is indescribable.
