Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.

According to a survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, 62 percent of American households include pets. These animals don’t ask for much -- just a short list of basics such as food, shelter, and, of course, our companionship (陪伴). Pets offer far more in return, teaching us about love, improving our emotional and physical health, and providing us with unconditional love and friendship.
Companion animals are natural teachers. They help people of all ages learn about responsibility, loyalty, sharing, and unconditional love -- qualities particularly essential to a child’s healthy development. Through helping to care for a pet, children also learn to care for their fellow human beings. There is a link between how people treat animals and how they treat each other. Kindness to animals is a lesson that benefits people, too.
Specially trained assistance dogs help people who have physical and mental disabilities (残疾). Assistance dogs are not sorted out as pets under the law, and they are allowed in public places where pets are prohibited. These dogs serve as the hands, ears, or eyes of their human partners and assist them by performing everyday tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. Dogs may also notice changes in behavior, body language, or smell of their human partners, alerting (提醒) them so that they may seek a safe environment.
Pets are good for our emotional and physical health. Caring for a companion animal can lessen feelings of loneliness in all age groups. It’s well known that relaxed, happy people do not become ill as often as those who suffer from pressure and sadness. Animal companionship also helps lower a person’s blood pressure. To put it simply, pets aren’t just good friends, they are good medicine.

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic (经济的) reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的)and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward . If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different , even though that might be the more risky choice.
21.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?
A. Some of them are not attractive.
B. Most of them ate too expensive to preserve.
C. They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
D. They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
22 .Which of the following is true according to the author ?
A. We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B. Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
C. Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.
D. No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
23.By “move things forward ” in the last paragraph , the author probably means“ ”
A.destroy old buildings B. put things in a different place
C. respect people’s feelings for historical buildings
D. choose new architectural styles
24. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why people dislike change.
B. To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
C. To warn that we could end up living in caves.
D. To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.

Over the last 70 years.researchers have been studying happy and Unhappy people and finally found out ten factors that make a difference. Our feelings of well-being at any moment are determined to a certain degree by genes. However of all the factors, wealth and age are the top two.
Money can buy a degree of happiness. But once you can afford to feed, clothe and house yourself, each extra dollar makes less and less difference.
Researchers find that,on average, wealthier people are happier. But the link between money and happiness is complex. In the past half-century, average income has sharply increased in developed countries, yet happiness levels have remained almost the same.Once your basic needs are met, money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends, neighbors and colleagues.
“Dollars buy Status(社会地位),and status makes people feel better,” conclude some experts, which helps explain why people who can seek status in other ways-scientists or actors, for example-may happily accept relatively poorly-paid jobs.
In a research,Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires-not just for money, but for friends, family, job,health-rose furthest beyond what they already had, tended to be less happy than those who felt a smaller gap(差距).Indeed, the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better than income alone.“The gap measures just blow away the only measures of income,”says Michalos.
Another factor that has to do with happiness is age.Old age may not be so bad.“Given all the problems of aging, how could the elderly be more satisfied?” asks Professor Laura Carstensen.
Why are old people happier? Some scientists suggest older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it,or they're more realistic about their goals, only setting ones that they know they can achieve. But Carstensen thinks that with time running out, older people have learned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that don't.
“People realize not only what they have, but also that what they have cannot-last forever,” she says.“A goodbye kiss to a husband or wife at the age of 85,for example, may bring far more complex emotional responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20.”
12.According to the passage, the feeling of happiness _________.
A.has little to do with wealth B.increases gradually with age
C.is measured by desires D.is determined partly by genes

We ____(study) last night, but we went to the cinema instead.
We often hear people say, "1 have a good memory for things like that. " or "I can remember names. "
But do you know memory is the single most important thing and it has played a very important part? For early men, there were dangers all around them - bad weather. wild animals. The keys to keep on living lay in man's ability to remember these dangers and the ways he had dealt with them in the pest And as man learned how to deal with them, he became civilized Surprisingly, scientists have not yep found a way to open up the brain and observe its function without destroying it. Perhaps there are two types of memory, long-term and short-term. Short-term refers to those facts that stay with us for a few seconds to a few hours. For example, when you stay at a hotel, you remember the room and forget it as soon as you leave. Long-term memory, on the other hand, means you remember things for a long period of time. If you spend your honeymoon in a special hotel. it's likely that you'll remember your stay quite clearly.
Scientists also believe that a short-term memory can become a long-term memory if a lot of chemical and physical changes take place in the part of the brain. Although the human brain weighs three pounds, it contains 30 billion nerve cells acting like a computer. When those changes strengthen the links in certain nerve cells, a thought becomes a part of the long-term memory.

Some Ways to Have an Amazing Day
Here are a few tips for making sure you can answer the pop quiz of life confidently:
Be kind.
___16___ How often do you stop to talk to the people you encounter every day? Do you know the names of the people at the bank, the grocery store, or restaurant? One great way to get more out of your day is to fill it with people you know. The best way to know more people is to be kind to everyone you meet. Take a moment to learn a little about them.
___17___
I avoided saying “Stay Busy” because sometimes we can fill our day with meaningless activities and feel busy but then at the end of the day we look back and realize we accomplished nothing. A great way to stay productive is to look at the things you would like to accomplish today, this week, this month, etc. and then plan some time to work on each of them.
Look for ways to serve.
I truly believe that giving meaningful service to other people is the greatest key to our personal happiness. It may be just a smile and a “hello”. ___18___ It may be just a phone call to tell them “thank you for being a friend.” When we serve other people, we develop personal joy.
Find a purpose.
The happiest people have one or more big “life goals”. ___19___ When we have a big goal that we feel passionate about we become more excited to work on that goal every day.
___20___ When you give yourself the pop quiz at the end of the day, you will be ready to say you did everything you
could.
A. Keep learning new things
B. Make the most of every day
C. Stay productive all the time
D. Try to do more in your everyday life
E. It may be helping them with their work
F. It has been said that you can measure a person by how they treat the people who can do nothing for them
G. It may be to run a marathon, write a book, start a business, develop a product or learn a new hobby or profession.
