The wisdom teeth(智齿)are usually the last teeth to appear, often when people are in their late teens or early twenties. Wisdom teeth are growing at the back of the mouth, and can grow into place normally and never cause a problem. But often there is not enough room for them in the mouth. They might crowd the other teeth, and sometimes even push through the gums(牙龈). An impacted wisdom tooth(阻生智齿) is one that fails to completely rise through the gums. Wisdom teeth that only partly break through can leave space for bacteria(细菌)to enter around the tooth.

Experts say people should have their mouths examined between the ages of 16 and 20 for the placement of their wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth show up clearly on X-rays, and experts say that removal is generally advised when they only partly break through the gums, or if there is a chance that poor placement will damage other teeth. Removal is also called for in cases where fluid(液体)collects around a wisdom tooth that is partly or fully below the gums. If removal is advised ,the best time to do it is before the teeth cause any problems or pain. Young adulthood is usually the best time for wisdom teeth removal, since older patients more easily got infected before the operation. During the operation, patients are usually under general anesthesia(麻醉)so that they won’t feel any pain. They can also choose to just take a painkiller and remain awake; this choice will depend on the condition of the wisdom teeth and the number to be removed. After the operation, there can be swelling(肿胀) of the face and the gums, and the patients can feel some pain. Both can be treated with cold wraps, and medication given by the doctors.

It used to be a matter of fact when Peter Pan – a character from James Matthew Barrie’s 1911 book – said: “All children, except one, grow up.”

But this “fact” doesn’t seem to apply to today’s world anymore.

According to the NPD Group, a US market research company, sales of toys to adults in the UK increased by more than 20 percent in 2016, three times the pace of the children’s toy market itself. These toys ranged from puzzles and Lego building sets to vehicle models and action figures. And more than half of the sales came from millennials – people born between the 1980s and 2000s.

“Adults of the 21st century are channeling (疏导) their inner child, one toy at a time,” commented website Koreaboo. This is also why these adults are sometimes referred to as “kidults”.

According to Frederique Tutt, an analyst at NPD, the motivation of these grown-ups is to escape the stress of today’s fast-paced world. They are driven toward the more immediate pleasures brought by toys than those brought by, say, getting a promotion, which is far less easy to achieve.

“It reminds me of the playful side of life,” Rob Willner, a 25-year-old PhD student in the UK, told The Telegraph when talking about his love for Lego, which he said brings him both comfort and entertainment.

Despite this, some social scientists see the trend as disturbing. To Frank Furendi, a professor at the University of Kent in the UK, the fact that so many adults are pursuing “the thrills (刺激) of youth” is the evidence that “adulthood has got nothing attractive about it anymore”, he told The New York Times.u “That’s actually quite sad.”

But scientists are probably just worrying too much. According to Canadian comic book artist Todd McFarlane, collecting toys could simply be a way for people to express their individuality (个性).

“It’s just pop culture stuff. It’s stuff that says, ‘I like a little of this and I like a little of that’,” he told ABC News. “[It’s] no big deal.”

So now that over 100 years have passed since Peter Pan, perhaps it’s time to introduce a new “fact”, as stated in the tagline (品牌宣传词) of the UK fashion brand KIDULT: “Growing old is mandatory (强制性的), but growing up is optional.”

21. The author mentions Peter Pan in the text mainly to ______.

 A. show the influence of the character on millennials

 B. explore the similarities Peter Pan and millennials share

 C. lead up to the trend of millennials’ love for toys

 D. analyze what has made many millennials refuse to grow up

22. Why do many adults feel like collecting toys, according to Frederique Tutt?

 A. They find it brings them both comfort and inspiration.

 B. They consider it a way to relieve stress.

 C. They want to make up for the pleasures they missed during childhood.

 D. They usually don’t get along well in their lives and need an emotional outlet.

23. What can we conclude from the article about kidults?

 A. They are well-known for their pursuit of independence and freedom.

 B. Social scientists feel worried about them because they take nothing seriously.

 C. In Todd McFarlane’s eyes, their interest in toys is a way to express their identity.

 D. They refuse to make efforts to become promoted at work as they don’t want to grow up.

Have you heard about Leap year? Leap year is a year that has 366 days instead of the usual 365. It normally occurs every four years, always on an even-numbered year. The extra day is added to our shortest month. That is the second month of the year, which in non-leap years has 28 days, two fewer than any other month. 36

We also call Leap year the bissextile year (闰年). 37    In our calendar system there is a need for a leap year because the solar year (the time it takes the earth to go around the sun onceis actually slightly more than 365 days long. That extra day—Feb 29 every four years—helps correct the difference between our calendar and the solar calendar.

It is said that Leap year was first made part of the calendar by the ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar. His astronomers had calculated the length of the solar year to be 365 days and six hours. So Caesar declared that an extra day be added to the calendar.38

However, Caesar’s adjustment was not completely accurate because his astronomers’ year exceeded the true solar year by eleven minutes and fourteen seconds. By 1582, a difference of ten days had developed between the calendar year and the true solar year. To correct this error, Pope Gregory XIII ruled that every fourth year would continue to be a leap year except for century years that could not be divided evenly by 400. By this system, century years such as 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but the year 2000 was a leap year.  39

People born on Feb 29 celebrate their growing up a little differently from the rest of us.

40    But if they go strictly by the calendar, they have only one-fourth as many birthday celebrations as most people.

A. They acknowledge that they get older each year.

B. When you see Feb 29 on a calendar, you know that year is a leap year.

C. This is its formal, or scientific title.

D. This may seem complicated, but it works.

E. This is done every four years.

F. The leap year was introduced in the Julian calendar in 46 BC.

G. In a leap year, the extra day is added to the second month, giving it 29 instead of the usual 28 days

Regarded as one of the English language’s most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery, human nature, and philosophy (哲学). Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.

Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing due to tuberculosis (肺结核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.

At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized (批评) by a magazine. However, the negative response didn’t stop his love of rhythm (韵律).

John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrative-based (叙事体的) and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all that he learned. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821.

32. John Keats’ attitude towards life changed because of       .

A. They read many books.                                           B. They had a bad childhood.

C. They died of the same disease.                                     D. They showed strong interest in poetry.

34. While trying to achieve his dream of becoming a poet first, John Keats was       .

A. determined                           B. experienced                          C. knowledgeable                     D. impatient

35. What do we know from the passage?

C. In 1816 Keats spent two months writing a poem.

The term “Industry 4.0” refers to the fourth industrial revolution. The first industrial revolution was the production of goods with machines like steam engines, which was followed by the second industrial revolution that introduced mass production with the help of electric power, followed by the digital revolution —the use of electronics and IT in production.

Industry 4.0 is a high-tech project, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing (制造业). The basic principle of Industry 4.0 is that by connecting machines, work pieces and systems, we are creating intelligent networks along the entire value chain that can control each other automatically. The goal is the Smart Factory, which adapts well and uses resources efficiently as well as linking customers and business partners with great intelligence. Technological bases are the Internet systems and advanced factories. Experts believe that Industry 4.0 could be a reality in about 10 to 20 years.

So, what effects does this change have on the classic manufacturing? According to an expert, “it is highly likely that the world of production will become more and more networked until everything is connected with everything else.” Networks and processes have so far been limited to one factory. But in the time of Industry 4.0, the boundaries (界限) of individual factories will most likely no longer exist. Instead, they will be lifted in order to inter-connect multiple factories or even geographical regions.

How is an Industry 4.0 factory different from a today’s factory? In current industry environment, providing high-end quality service or product with the least cost is the key to success. Factories are trying to increase their profit as much as possible. In the time of Industry 4.0, various data sources are available to provide worthwhile information about different aspects of the factory. Using data for understanding the current condition and checking faults and failures is a natural thing. The sharing of information around the clock and around the globe will enable these connected systems to manage themselves independently, work more efficiently and identify any errors quickly.

The good news is that Europe is much better prepared for the Industry 4.0 revolution than one might think. Europe will position itself as a pioneer in the fourth revolution. Industry 4.0 is a project in the high-tech strategy of the German government. Meanwhile, in the U.S., some companies are also working hard on it. But the success of industry depends on whether business and politics can work together. It’s not only politics that needs to help open the door for Industry 4.0. Every company is advised to seize the new digital opportunities.

42. What marks the coming of Industry 4.0?

A. Steam engines.  B. Mass production.  C. Intelligent networks.    D. Use of electronics.

43. Industry 4.0 will probably result in ________ in the world of manufacturing.

As is known to us, the year 2016 has one extra day in it — February 29th. This is because it’s  61  we call “a leap year”. Every four years, the year has 366 days in  62  instead of 365.

It is called a leap year because hundreds of years ago in England, the extra day wasn’t  63  (legal) recognized. There is a well-known tradition in the UK  64  (associate) with February 29th, introduced many centuries ago. Women are allowed to break with tradition and propose(求婚) to their boyfriends on this day. This all started back in the  65  (five) century, when a famous Irish saint made a  66  (complain) that women had to wait too long for men to propose. According to the legend, Saint Patrick said any female dreaming of a proposal could ask her boyfriend to marry her on this additional day in February. This so-called tradition  67  (write) in law in the thirteenth century. Scotland passed a law allowing women to propose to men in a leap year. It was said that if the men refused, they had to pay a fine!

Now in 2016, there are calls  68  February 29th to become a public holiday. Some people believe that it should be an  69  (office) day off, because no one gets  70  (many) payments for working an extra day in a leap year. For the moment though, the British still have to go to work on this day.

Whenever we see a button, we are eager to press it because we know something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example on a doorbell and on the “on/off” button on the TV. But some buttons are actually fake, like the “close” button on a lift.

Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete scam (骗局), at least in the US  the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.

It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.

But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.

“Perceived (能够感知的) control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,” Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor, said, “ having a lack of control is associated with depression.”

Experts have revealed that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats (温度调节器) because people tend to feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace.

But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.

“That habit is here to stay,” John Kounios, a psychology professor, said. “Even though I have real doubts about the traffic light buttons, I always press them. After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not press the button in the hope that this one will work?”
