One of my neighbors used to have a beautiful tree in her front yard. Her dad had planted it for her when it was nothing more than a twig and several years later it started to shoot towards the sky with amazing speed. Soon it blessed her with cooling shade in the summer and glorious, golden leaves in the fall.
When the two-day snowstorm struck our town, heavy snow fell on the tree’s branches that were still full of leaves. The weight split (劈叉) that lovely tree down the middle. It was so sad seeing half of it laying on the ground after the storm. When I talked to my neighbor later, she said that the damage had been too much and that the entire tree would have to be cut down. Thankfully she had saved a few saplings(树苗) from it that she hoped to replant in the future.
Still, it was a shock to drive by her house the other day and see nothing but a stump(树桩) in her front yard. I missed that tree. I missed its beauty, its leaves shinning in the afternoon sun. I missed seeing its limbs reach towards the heavens. I thought that the stump would be a sad reminder of its loss for a long time to come. My wonderful neighbor, though, had another plan. When I drove by her home today I saw a tiny bird feeder sitting on that stump and a colorful songbird having its dinner. It was such an affirmation of life. It was such a joy to see. I could feel my heart smile.
Life by its very nature is a mixed bag. It hands us both beauty and tragedy, love and loss, pleasure and pain. What we do with it, however, is up to us. We can let it split us in two, or we can use even its hardest times to make our souls stronger and our hearts more loving. We can spend it complaining or we can use it to help others.

When one loves one’s Art, no service seems too hard.
Joe was a man with a genius(天才) for art. Delia did things in six octaves(音阶) promisingly.
Joe and Delia became in love with one of the other, or each of the other, as you please, and in a short time were married – for (see above), when one loves one’s Art no service seems too hard.
They began housekeeping in a flat. It was a lonesome(无人迹的) flat, but they were happy; for they had their Art, and they had each other.
Joe was learning painting in the class of the great Magister – you know his fame. His fees are high; his lessons are light – his high-lights have brought him fame. Delia was studying under Rosenstock – you know his reputation as a disturber of the piano keys.
They were mighty(非常地) happy as long as their money lasted.
After a while, Art flagged(减退). Everything going out and nothing coming in, money was lacking to pay Mr. Magister and Rosenstock their prices. When one loves one’s Art, no service seems too hard. So, Delia said she must give music lessons to make the ends meet.
For two or three days she went out looking for pupils. One evening she came home overjoyed.
“Joe, dear,” she said, cheerfully, “I’ve a pupil. And, oh, the loveliest people! General – General Pinkney’s daughter Clementina – on Seventy-first street.”
“That’s all right for you, Dele,” said Joe, “but how about me? Do you think I’m going to let you work while I play in the regions of high art? ”
Delia came and hung about his neck.
“Joe, dear, you are silly. You must keep on at your studies. It is not as if I had quit my music and gone to work at something else. While I teach I learn. I am always with my music.”
“All right,” said Joe. “But I may sell some of my pictures as well.”
The next few weeks, they both busied themselves with their own business and brought back a ten, a five, a two and a one – all legal tender notes – and laid them beside each others’ earnings.
One Saturday evening Joe reached home first. He spread his $18 on the table and washed what seemed to be a great deal of dark paint from his hands.
Half an hour later Delia arrived, her right hand tied up in a shapeless bundle(束) of wraps and bandages(绷带).
“How is this?” asked Joe. Delia laughed, but not very joyously. “Clementina,” she explained, “insisted upon a Welsh rabbit(一种奶酪) after her lesson. In serving the rabbit she spilled a great lot of it, boiling hot, over my wrist. Nothing serious, dear.”
“What time this afternoon did you burn your hand, Dele?”
“Five o’clock, I think,” said Dele. “The iron – I mean the rabbit came off the fire about that time.”
“Sit down here a moment, Dele,” said Joe. “What have you been doing for the last few weeks, Dele?” he asked.
She braved it for a moment or two with an eye full of love and stubbornness, but at last down went her head and out came the truth and tears.
“I couldn’t get any pupils,” she wept. “I got a place ironing shirts in that big Twenty-fourth street laundry(洗衣店). A girl in the laundry set down a hot iron(熨斗) on my hand this afternoon. I think I did very well to make up both General Pinkney and Clementina. What made you ever suspect that I wasn’t giving music lessons?”
“I didn’t,” said Joe, “until tonight. And I wouldn’t have then, only I sent up this cotton waste and oil from the engine-room this afternoon for a girl upstairs who had her hand burned with a smoothing-iron. I’ve been firing the engine in that laundry for the last few weeks.”
“And then you didn’t …” said Delia
And then they both looked at each other and laughed, and Joe began:
“When one loves one’s Art no service seems …”
But Delia stopped him with her hand on his lips. “No,” she said – “just ‘When one loves.’”

The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September 1666.In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together.Over one hundred people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.
The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King’s baker in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window into the roof.A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.
By eight o’ clock three hundred houses were on fire.On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames.Tuesday was the worst day.The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul’s and the Guildhall were among them.
Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire, “People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment.Birds fell out of the air because of the heat.”
The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.
After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect(建筑师), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow, but he did build more than fifty churches, among them was the new St Paul’s Cathedral.

Patience is of great important in our daily life. Once I waited for a bus to come at a stop. 30 minutes past, but no bus came. Both upset and annoyed, I decided to walk on feet. But no sooner had I left when the bus arrived. I thought if I had waited for one more minute, I would have caught it. If I chose to take a next bus, I would have to wait for other 30 minutes. Only then do I realize my problem. Being impatient will possible waste all the efforts that we have put it in. Now whenever I am close to lose my patience, I’ll think of this experience.
You must have written your research paper, your personal essay, your book review—whatever your school class requires. You think you have provided good information in the needed number of words. 31
But is it really done? Many teachers and professional writers believe that writing is revision. 32
Revision of writing is a necessary skill for students. The classroom is a good place to practice patience, concentration and listening. There are rewards with spending time with your thoughts and really taking time to compose your ideas in an orderly and reasonable way. You should put away your paper after you have written a first version, or draft. Wait several hours, maybe overnight, before working on it more. 33 Not only are you refreshed, but you’re looking at things through different eyes. That’s what revision literally means—to see again through different eyes.
Following a four-step process may help you with your paper. The first step in the process is invention. It includes forming many questions about your subject. It is called “question-storming”. 34 Then comes the revision period. Take your time to read what you’ve written, to think about it, and maybe to re-shape it based on what you see now, as a kind of new person looking at it with a reader’s eyeglasses rather than a writer’s. The fourth step is called “publication”. 35 In a sense, anytime you turn it over to another person, that’s publication.
Probably, the process takes away some of the tension of writing. And worry about the quality of your writing often disappears when you share that writing.
A. Perfect writing is not possible.
B. In the second step, you draft and compose a paper.
C. And you feel good because your work is finished.
D. This is just like returning to a job after a vacation.
E. This does not mean your writing is professional publication.
F. What is most important is getting your thoughts and ideas on paper.
G. In other words, writing well means making needed changes and rewriting.

A. The researchers identified 15 blue whales that have appeared off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska since 1997. Four of these whales were recognized as ones that were once sighted off California shores, suggesting that the whales are returning to an old migration pattern between the coasts.
Before commercial whaling began in the early 1900s, blue whales were found widely throughout the North Pacific and California waters. But from the 1920s to the 1960s, whaling severely reduced the whale populations. Blue whales never recovered in the Northern Pacific, making sightings in this area rare. However, much larger groups of whales have been observed close to California since the 1970s.
The scientists had previously thought that the California population was separate from the population that had historically lived in North Pacific waters. But the current study shows that whales off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska are likely part of the California population.
To identify the blue whales, the researchers looked at photos of cetaceans taken in the North Pacific Ocean and compared them with a library of blue whale pictures taken along the West Cost of the United States and Southern Pacific. Up to now, the researchers are not quite sure why the whales are changing their migration patterns, but they suspect that the whales may be following their food moving farther north by the changes in ocean conditions.
32. According to the passage, blue whales are ____ .
A. moving from the south to the north.
B. dying out due to commercial whaling.
C. following a fixed route of migration .

Thinking about the future isn’t special skill. Actually, everyone does it all the time. We schedule future activities and appointments on our calendars. We make to-do lists, a promise to ourselves of how we will spend our future time and energy. We look up the weekend’s weather. We make predictions about the results of sporting events. We practice, study and train for upcoming events that matter to us. We daydream about events we’re eagerly looking forward to. We worry about others.
Most of this common future thinking is about the near future: the next few minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or maybe even the next few years of our lives. Little time is spent thinking about what our lives will be like or what actions we should prepare to take in the far future: ten years, twenty years, or even fifty years from now. This kind of far-future thinking is the
domain of professional futurists.
Futurists are traine
d to imagine distant realities that seem impossible to others: technologies that don’t exist yet, great changes to laws, strange diseases most likely to infect us
in the year 2031. Why indeed think about such remote futures? Are there psychological and social benefits to imagining the world, and our lives, decades in advance? And if so, what does it take to become good at imagining the far future?
These were the fascinating questions that we recently explored with other futurists. I was personally inspired by the discussions, and learned a lot about how futurists imagine the future of life. They specifically wanted to use their imaginations to make the world a better place. Another big benefit for me was that this way of thinking is a skill that can be taught. Society would benefit greatly if we all learned the valuable skills that enable us to think about what things would be like in the future.
9. The writer gives many examples in the first paragraph to
A. draw readers' attention B. tell readers the main idea of the passage
C. entertain readers D. explain the topic

A. understanding B. field C. choice D. rule
11. Whic
h of the following things might a futurist think about?
A. The result of sporting event being held.
B. The weather of the coming weekend.
C. A life-threatening disease that doesn't exist yet.
D. A new technology widely used in daily life.
12. What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. The way futurists imagine the future of life is interesting.
B. The idea of using imagination to make the world a better place is ridiculous.
C. It is impossible for us to think about future things as futurists.
D. Society will benefit a lot if we all train ourselves to think as a futurist.
When Jane put out the idea of homeschooling to her parents, the first reaction they gave was, “You are cutting the child off the world.” “Did the child really get cut off or did the child socialize better?”
The moment we hear of homeschooling, we think the child will have no opportunities to interact with their peers. However, in my friend’s opinion, we forget that when attending a regular school, the child is not into socializing all the while. The child is restricted to so many other activities. Studies take a major role in a child’s life. The child hardly has the time to interact at school.
The child might be meeting and studying along with many peers; however, how many kids interact with all the kids in a class? But in homeschooling system, as my friend mentioned, the kid has all the time and can plan his day accordingly. During the day the child studies just like other school-going kids but with no burden of homework and project work, the child has so much free time in the evening as to effectively interact and play with peers. The quality time the child spends in education is really impressive.
Homeschooled kids have the opportunity to socialize more often as they have a lot of time in their hands. They can also make socializing a regular habit. Just as my friend said, her child goes to a neighboring park almost every day and has a set of friends who go there daily. Other children get back home to finish off homework and project work whereas her child who is already through with studies gets the opportunity to spend time with family members.
When I heard this, I really felt how lucky the child was. Definitely the child had a better opportunity to socialize when compared with my kid. However, I might not consider homeschooling for my kid, as I am so used to the conventional schooling system and feel regular schooling the safest bet.
1. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to _________.
A. express his views on homeschooling
B. explain what homeschooling is
C. share his ways of teaching his children
D. promote homeschooling
2. What is the biggest advantage of homeschooled children?
A. They will become braver.
B. They can be more popular.
C. They can socialize better.
D. They will know how to arrange time.
3. What do we know about homeschooled children?
A. They don’t interact with their peers often.
B. They have more spare time to play.
C. They are restricted to certain activities
D. They can’t gain enough knowledge....
4. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By following the order of importance.
B. By following the order of time.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By presenting data.
Five meteorologists (气象学家) who were trapped for two weeks after polar bears surrounded their weather station are now able to leave after the creatures were chased away. Their supervisor told NBC News early Wednesday.
Russian officials had feared the siege could last for another month, the time it would take to reach the islands in the Kara Sea, high in the Arctic Circle. But on Tuesday night a research ship took a detour (绕道) to assist those weathermen, station supervisor Vasily Shevchenko told NBC News. The ship run by Russia’s state-run oil firm Rosneft frightened away the bears using its helicopter, before resupplying the weather station with more food and puppies (幼犬) . The puppies are not yet big enough to deter the bears, but the station is planning to draft in a replacement adult guard dog as soon as possible.
Some of the bears had taken to sleeping directly outside the windows of remote outpost. There was no risk of the researchers starving because they had a year’s worth of food, but they were forced to take dangerous trips to a nearby building, holding a gun for protection, according to Shevchenko.
Polar bears are an endangered species. In Russia, it’s a crime to shoot them unless in self-defense. The bears usually leave the islands in the summer, but this time they were trapped by the melting ice, an apparent sign of climate change, according to Shevchenko. “They’ve stayed on the island because there is nowhere for them to go,” he said.
The animals suffer from global warming because it shrinks the floating ice that forms their main hunting ground. According to the environmental group the World Wide Fund for Nature, known as the WWF, this has got some polar bears to go near human habitats in search of food.
8. What did the research ship do to help the five meteorologists?
A. Drive them home.
B. Shoot all the bears.
C. Use its helicopter to scare the bears away.
D. Supply the weather station with more money.

C. protect D. raise
10. What made the bears trapped on the island according to the text?
A. Sea Pollution. B. Climate change.
C. Humans’ hunting. D. Animals’ hunting
11. What can we infer from the text?
A. People in Russia can hunt bear for money.
