Along the river banks of the Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claws(爪)on its wings when young. They build their homes about 4.6m above the river, an important feature for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin.
In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and red on the underside. The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the common birds, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though is only found in the young.
Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak(喙),they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lost their claws.
During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing purposes.
When danger comes in the form of a snake or a monkey, the young hoatzins--- maybe three in one family---jump over the side and into the river. They swim about under the water until it is safe to return and then, using their claws, lift themselves up through the branches and get back home. When they have learned to fly they lose their claws and escape enemies not by swimming but by flying off, in a slow and heavy way, to a neighboring tree.

A young person is said to have a behavior disorder when his or her behavior is noticeably different from that expected in the school or community. This can also be stated in simpler terms as a child who is not doing what adults want him to do at a particular time. Children with this disorder often seem to be behaving in different and socially unacceptable ways.
Like learning disabilities, behavior disorders are hard to diagnose. There are no physical symptoms in the body that are observable or measurable. Behavior disorders are therefore identified by observing behavior patterns in the child over a period of time. If a child displays some of the following behaviors, he may be labeled with a behavior disorder:
◆ Aggression and cruelty to people and animals.
◆ Destruction of property — defacing or damaging things.
◆ Little sympathy and concern for others.
◆ Takes no responsibility for behavior. Also lies, cheats and steals easily.
◆ Disregards rules and regulations.
In addition to these general symptoms of a behavior disorder, there are other symptoms characteristic of more specific behavior disorders such as ADHD — this is the inattentive, can’t-sit-still behavior. The attention can’t last long and the behavior is impulsive at times. The child also seems quite distracted and forgetful.
Behavior disorders come from brain injury, child abuse, and shock, etc. There have also been indications that it could be a genetic disorder. The behavior therefore is an involuntary response to these experiences and the child should not be blamed for his behavior. Since the child has problems controlling his behavior, it stands to reason that his performance in school will be affected. A child with a behavior disorder will feel bad about himself and that low self-esteem will be further worsened by the adults around him who do not treat his condition with understanding and willingness to help.
Behavior disorders are best dealt with by behavior and psychological treatments. But, as with learning disabilities, accurate diagnosis is important and this must be over a length of time. It is also important in trying to modify the behavior to be clear about what is the behavior you are expecting. Make sure it is a rational expectation. For example, expecting a three-year-old to sit quietly through a long church service may not be reasonable, or demanding that a six-year-old does extra home work after a long day of school and extra curricular activities may be stretching the child’s concentration and attention too far. Since some behavior disorders result from shocking and upsetting life experiences or brain injury, treatments should include helping the child to resolve and heal emotionally from the experience. The behavior could be corrected through emotional healing. In other words, when a human being is emotionally healthy, that is, can be aware of his intelligence and enthusiasm for life and his loving connectedness to other human beings, he automatically “behaves” rationally.

In much of Asia, especially the so-called “rice bowl” cultures of China, Japan, Korea, 61 Vietnam, food is usually eaten with chopsticks.
Chopsticks are usually two long, thin pieces of wood or bamboo. They can also be made of plastic, animal bone or metal. Sometimes chopsticks are quite artistic. Truly elegant chopsticks might 62 (make)of gold and silver with Chinese characters. Skilled workers also combine various hardwoods and metal 63 (create)special designs.
The Chinese have used chopsticks for five thousand years. People probably cooked their food in large pots, 64 (use) twigs(树枝) to remove it. Over time, 65 the population grew, people began cutting food into small pieces so it would cook more quickly. Food in small pieces could be eaten easily with twigs which 66 (gradual)turned into chopsticks.
Some people think that the great Chinese scholar Confucius, 67 lived from roughly 551 to 479 B.C., influenced the 68 (develop) of chopsticks. Confucius believed knives would remind people of killings and 69 (be) too violent for use at the table.
Chopsticks are not used everywhere in Asia. In India, for example, most people traditionally eat 70 their hands.
After a couple has had their first child, to their disappointment they become infertile (不生育的)and can not have more children . Many couples have difficulties having children, and sometimes it is impossible for couples to have children because they are infertile. Fortunately, cloning would allow these couples to have children. This is one reason why it is difficult to decide whether cloning is ethical(伦理的) or not. The following are some of the reasons why cloning should be allowed.
As just discussed, cloning can be used to help benefit those who cannot have children through the normal, natural way. It is the desire of most couples to have children and when it is impossible to bear children of their own, some are willing to do anything to have a child. Cloning will allow them to have a child or many children that have the genetic(基因的)pattern of the parents.
Through cloning, research can progress. We can learn enough to produce human organs without having to produce human beings. We may develop technology to allow easier genetic testing and fixing problems such as spinal cord injuries, cancer, and many more.
Cloning organs for organ transplants(移植) is one of the major practical reasons that cloning should be allowed. There is always a high demand for organs. Some argue for the cloning of humans to create extra body parts. Others talk of just wanting to clone an organ to replace a faulty organ.
Rejuvenation (返老还童) is also a key argument for advocates of cloning. Human cloning may one day cure heart attacks. Some scientists believe that by injecting cloned healthy heart cells into damaged heart tissue will lead to healing of the heart.

It was the perfect friendship. We would run and play together; he was by my side everywhere I went. He always sensed when something was wrong, and was there to comfort me. Gambit was my best friend through my most difficult year in high school. And even though I could never have made it through that tough year without him, when it was over, I had to give him up.
This very special friendship began when I joined 4H and became part of its Seeing Eye Puppy Project. I attended meetings and learned training techniques, but each month I found it harder to be there without a pup of my own and watch everyone else try new technique with their pups.
Finally the long - awaited day arrived. Gambit was only seven weeks old, and it was love at first sight. He was the cutest pup I had ever set eyes on.
Gambit and I immediately became best friends. My job was to teach basic commands, socialize him, and give him as much affection as possible dining the fragile (脆弱) puppy months. Gambit’s training was practically effortless; he learned commands very quickly and was always obedient (顺从).
Gambit had been in my home for five months when my junior year began. This was an extremely challenging year for me, and it was great to come home to his bright eyes and wagging (摇) tail. Every day I would talk to Gambit about everything on my mind. I knew he wouldn’t judge or reveal my secrets. Gambit and I had some of the best conversations, and all he did was listen.
This July I received the call that it was time for Gambit to return to complete his formal training. My heart sank. I had known he would have to go, but it seemed too soon. It felt like my best friend was moving away. I was at a loss what to do. My time with Gambit came to an end when my best friend and faithful companion moved on to a higher calling. He will help a blind person to be independent.
Gambit taught me that there will be things in life that you may love but have to give up.
All you can do is remember what they taught you, and it will make you a stronger person.

Nowadays it’s believed that the largest contributors to air pollution are gasoline vehicles. They not only give off harmful gases but also dangerous and heavy metal particles(微粒) that can result in environmental dangers. We can’t stop using vehicles and thus stop air pollution right away. However, at least we can look for better replacements so that air pollution can be reduced. According to studies, hydrogen (氢)cars prove to be a better replacement for traditional cars.
A hydrogen car is a vehicle that uses hydrogen as fuel for its engine to work. There are two types of hydrogen cars. The first one is to use hydrogen as a fuel, and the second one is to use hydrogen fuel cells(电池) to provide power for the car. Hydrogen and oxygen react chemically with each other to produce electricity, thus starting the car.
There are many advantages of hydrogen cars. For example, hydrogen is available in plenty. Therefore, you needn’t worry about a lack of hydrogen. More importantly, no harmful gases are released as by-products .The only by-products are water and a little amount of heat so air pollution is prevented up to a large extent.
However, there are also some problems with hydrogen cars. For instance, in case of damage, the cost of repairing and replacing fuel cells is high. Worse still, hydrogen is a material which can burn easily, so it can result in a huge explosion of the car.
The concept of hydrogen cars is relatively new for most people. Research is still in progress to reduce disadvantages and increase advantages. Therefore, hydrogen cars are expected to contribute their bit towards making this planet better and healthier!

There was a time when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, and I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold(大胆的) and brave — and mighty forces will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet — and stopped him cold.”
Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do noth
ing and succeeds.
So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed of.

A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.
B. Trying without success is meaningless.
C. Repeated failure creates a better life.
D. Boldn
ess can be gained little by little.

If you think a high﹣factor sunscreen (防晒霜) keeps you safe from harmful rays, you may be wrong.Research in this week's Nature shows that while factor 50reduces the number of melanomas (黒瘤) and delays their occurrence,it can't prevent them.Melanomas are the most aggressive skin cancers. You have a higher risk if you have red or blond hair, fair skin, blue or green eyes,or sunburn easily,or if a close relative has had one.Melanomas are more common if you have periodic intense exposure to the sun.Other skin cancers are increasingly likely with long﹣term exposure.
There is continuing debate as to how effective sunscreen is in reducing melanomas﹣﹣﹣the evidence is weaker than it is for preventing other types of skin cancer.A 2011Australian study of 1,621people found that people randomly selected to apply sunscreen daily had half the rate of melanomas of people who used cream as needed.A second study, comparing 1,167people with melanomas to 1,101who didn't have the cancer, found that using sunscreen routinely, alongside other protection such as hats, long sleeves or staying in the shade, did give some protection. This study said other forms of sun protection﹣﹣﹣not sunscreen﹣﹣﹣seemed most beneficial. The study relied on people remembering what they had done over each decade of their lives,so it's not entirely reliable. But it seems reasonable to think sunscreen gives people a false sense of security in the sun.
Many people also don't use sunscreen properly﹣﹣﹣applying insufficient amounts, failing to reapply after a couple of hours and staying in the sun too long.It is sunburn that is most worrying﹣﹣﹣recent research shows five episodes of sunburn in the teenage years increases the risk of all skin cancers.
The good news is that a combination of sunscreen and covering up can reduce melanoma rates,as shown by Australian figures from their slip﹣slop﹣slap campaign. So if there is a heat wave this summer,it would be best for us,too,to slip on a shirt, slop on (抹上) sunscreen and slap on a hat.
12.What does the research in Nature say about a high﹣factor sunscreen?
A.It is ineffective in preventing melanomas.
B.It is ineffective in case of intense sunlight.
C.It is ineffective with long﹣term exposure.
D.It is ineffective for people with fair skin.
13.What do we learn from the 2011Australian study of 1,621people?
A.Sunscreen should be applied alongside other protection measures.
B.High﹣risk people benefit the most from the application of sunscreen.
C.Irregular application of sunscreen does women more harm than good.
D.Daily application of sunscreen helps reduce the incidence of melanomas.
14.What does the author say about the second Australian study?
A.It misleads people to rely on sunscreen for protection.
B.It helps people to select the most effective sunscreen.
C.It is not based on direct observation of the subjects.
D.It confirms the results of the first Australian study.
15.What does the author suggest to reduce melanoma rates?
A.Using both covering up and sunscreen.
B.Staying in the shade whenever possible.
C.Using covering up instead of sunscreen.
D.Applying the right amount of sunscreen.
Have you ever seen harmful robots refuse to die, no matter how fiercely people fight back? As is known, it is always the case in some of the scariest science fiction.
Now, science fiction has changed into science fact. For the first time, researchers have created a robotic machine that can stand a beating and keep on walking. Developed by scientists from Cornell University and the University of Vermont, the new robot looks like a spider with four legs.
Until now, even the most advanced robot was almost certain to break down when damaged. That’s because its inside computer simply doesn’t know how to operate the machine after its shape has changed.
To get around this problem, the spidery robot’s developers equipped their invention with eight motors and two sensors that read how the machine is tilting(倾斜). The motors and sensors all provide electrical signals to the machine’s software.
Using this information, the system follows a new procedure to figure out the machine’s shape at any given moment. The program chooses from among 100,000 possible arrangements of parts.
From there, the computer considers a wide variety of possible next steps, and it calculates how best to move the robot forward the longest possible distance, before trying to move again.
“The new strategy is a major advance in robotics”, Professor Skehan, a scientist in Cornell University says, “and it’s far from scary”. The technology may someday help researchers create better artificial arms and legs that give new freedom to people who lack them. The new knowledge might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.
“Designing robots that can adapt to changing environments and can compensate(补偿) for damage has been a difficult problem,” says neuroscientist Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in Bloomington. “This work provides a new way toward solving this important problem.”
