Still, the boy kept   67   (ride). He was carrying something over his shoulder and shouting. Finally, when we came to the next stop, the boy ran up to the door of the bus. It’s   69   (I).” She pushed her way to the driver and took the suitcase thankfully. Everyone on the bus began talking about what the boy had done, and the crowd of strangers   70   (sudden) became friendly to one another.

In 1880, the traveller and journalist Lafcadio Hearn was living in New Orleans and writing for a couple of local papers, Daily City Item and TimesDemocrat. Hearn sensed that New Orleans exists in a state of insidious disintegration(蜕变)—“crumbling into ashes”—thanks to its dangerous geography and its “frauds and maladministrations.” And yet, Hearn wrote to a friend, It is better to live here in sackcloth and ashes than to own the whole state of Ohio.” New Orleanians have always resembled New Yorkers; they tend to share the sense that to live anywhere else would lead inevitably to a stupid and pitiable existence beyond the bounds of understanding.

In part, the spirit of New Orleans is rooted in the city's belowsealevel unsteadiness, the condition of looking outand even upat the water all around you, the knowledge that water saturates(浸透) the ground you stand on. Katrina, the fierce hurricane that destroyed the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, tested the selfpossession of every citizen who survived it. More than eighteen hundred people did not survive it, and hundreds of thousands lost their homes. The storm and the terrible flooding that followed—a natural disaster worsened by a range of manmade disasters—revealed much that had been fragile, or rotten, in Hearn's time and grew worse with every decade: shabby civil engineering; corrupt and inefficient government institutions; and it turned out that an Administration in Washington witnessed for days a city drowning—a largely black city drowning—and reacted with annoying indifference. And yet, in the face of abandonmentin hospitals, on rooftops, on highway overpassesthe residents of New Orleans behaved with resilience(不折不挠). Rebecca Solnit, an acute observer of Katrina and its aftermath, has written, The belief that a Hobbesian war of allagainstall had broken loose justified treating the place as a crime zone or even an unfriendly country rather than a place in which grandmothers and children were trapped in frightful conditions, desperately in need of food, water, shelter and medical attention.

Alec Soth, a photographer who lives in Minneapolis and travels the Midwest and the South with the energy of a latterday Walker Evans, did not join the artists who came to New Orleans a decade ago to capture what he calls the eye candy of rot and ruin. Instead, he waited, preferring to capture the city of water ten years later, a city in a state of both persistent suffering and persistent renewal. Soth shows us the upsetting image of a freestanding column—all that is left of a house in the hardhit Lower Ninth Ward—but he moves toward a vision of promise, a lonely figure at his leisure, staring into the waters of today's New Orleans.

31. New Orleanians are similar to New Yorkers in that________.

A. they refuse to leave their homeland  B. they exist in insidious disintegration

A. A range of manmade disasters led to the fierce hurricane.

B. The hurricane happened following a terrible flooding.

C. The American government failed to provide help and support.

D. The residents of New Orleans have a deep hatred for governors.

33. Why did Alec Soth refuse to join other artists to take photos of New Orleans a decade ago?

A. He also treated New Orleans as a crime zone.

B. He had high expectations of the future of New Orleans.

C. He couldn't put up with the suffering the hurricane caused.

D. He was traveling the Midwest and the South with Walker Evans.

Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australia’s northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodile’s back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.

As an experienced photojournalist in Nashville, Tennessee, I was hired by USA Today newspaper to photograph a spinal bifida (脊柱畸形) corrective surgical procedure. It was to be performed on a twenty-one week old fetus(胎儿)in uterus(子宫)at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. At that time, in 1999, twenty-one weeks in uterus was the earliest that the surgical team would consider for surgery. The worst possible outcome would be that the surgery would cause premature delivery, and no child born earlier than twenty-three weeks had survived.

The tension could be felt in the operating room as the surgery began. A typical C-section cut was made to access the uterus, which was then lifted out and laid at the junction of the mother’s thighs(大腿). The entire procedure would take place within the uterus, and no part of the child was to breach the surgical opening. During the procedure, the position of the fetus was adjusted by gently moving the outside of the uterus. The entire surgical procedure on the child was completed in one hour and thirteen minutes. When it was over, the surgical team breathed a sigh of relief, as did I.

As a doctor asked me what speed of film I was using, out of the corner of my eye I saw the uterus shake, but no one’s hands were near it. It was shaking from within. Suddenly, an entire arm thrust out of the opening, then pulled back until just a little hand was showing. The doctor reached over and lifted the hand, which reacted and squeezed the doctor’s finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shook the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. I took the picture! Wow! It happened so fast that the nurse standing next to me asked, “What happened?” “The child reached out,” I said. “Oh. They do that all the time,” she responded.

The surgical opening to the uterus was closed and the uterus was then put back into the mother and the C-section opening was closed.

It was ten days before I knew if the picture was even in focus(对焦). To ensure no digital manipulation(篡改) of images before they see them, USA Today requires that film be submitted unprocessed. When the photo editor finally phoned me he said, “It’s the most incredible picture I’ve ever seen.”

It was lunchtime and I walked into a small branch bank on the West Side. I had come to 41 a checking account. The only officer on 42 was a fortyish black man, standing 43 a small counter from a young white boy who was wearing a V-necked sweater. I thought I was especially 44 of the boy because he looked more like from a prep school than a 45 in a West Side bank.

The boy continued to 46 my attention because of what happened next. He was holding an open savings-account book and 47 an expression of disappointment. “But I don’t understand. I opened the account myself, so why can’t I 48 any money?” the boy said, his voice breaking.

“I know it is, but those are the rules. I’ve already explained to you that a fourteen-year-old is not 49 to withdraw money without a letter from his parents,” the officer explained patiently.

Suddenly I noticed the 50 had a series of small deposits (存款)and withdraws. Then I questioned the officer, “How do you 51 that? Why did you let him withdraw money before, but not now?” He looked 52 . “Because the tellers were not aware of his age before and now they are. It’s really very 53” I turned to the boy with a shrug. “You’re really getting 54,” I said. “You ought to get your parents to come here and protest.” The boy looked destroyed. 55, he put his savings book in a rear-pocket and walked out of the bank.

The officer turned to me. “You know,” he said, “you really shouldn’t have got 56.” I couldn’t believe what he was saying. “We were 57 this morning that some neighborhood bully has been shaking down (敲诈) this boy for more than a month. The guy was 58 him to take money out every week and hand it over. The poor kid was 59 too scared to tell anyone. Anyway, the police are on the case and they’ll probably make a(n) 60 today.”

“You mean there is no rule about being too young to withdraw money from a savings account?”

“Not that I ever heard of. Now, sir, what can we do for you?”

Waste can be seen everywhere in the school. Some students ask for more food than they can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom. They say they can afford these things. But I don’t agree with them.

Waste can bring a lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources(资源), we are short of others, for example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal or oil to use in 100 years. So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about it. I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everybody should stop wasting as soon as possible.

In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent waste from happening, for example, turn off the water taps when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything will be changed. Waste can be stopped one day, if we do our best.

26. Which is not mentioned in this passage?

A. Fresh water.   B. Forest.        C. Oil.          D. Coal.

27. What may happen in 100 years?

A. We may still have enough oil.    B. We may still have enough coal.

C. We may have a little oil.        D. We may have no coal or oil to use.

28. Which of the following is right?

A. Waste brings problems.           B. Waste can bring no problem.

C. China is rich in fresh water.    D. Students never waste things.

29. Which is the best title of this passage?

A. Stop Wasting                     B. School life

C. Waste in the School              D. Rich Resources in China

Long ago people used bells more than they do today. The postmen was used to ring a hand bell when they delivered letters. Fire engines had bells instead sirens(警笛). People which sold things came past houses, rang a bell and shouting what was for sale. In many country, bells were hung around the necks of animals. The bells help owners find lost cows or sheep. Today, at India, animals still wear bells. Now bells are used more because various modern sound-makers have taken its place. Now people try to keep the old bells in schools and churches so that they won’t lose their beautifully sounds forever.

Every summer and winter vacation, youth hotels hire volunteers in large numbers to serve as receptionists, clean rooms and wash dishes. In exchange, the hotels offer accommodation and meals. There is no salarybut the job only requires you to work half a day every day, which means you can spend the rest doing whatever you have in mind. This business model is called “volunteer travel”.

According to Xia Shang, a founder of an online platform for volunteer travel, there are an average of 100 resumes (简历) being handed in every day. Over 90 percent of them are from college students, which explains why the number rises sharply during summer and winter vacations. “The post-1990 generation was born with ‘sociable’ characteristics. They have a desire to thoroughly explore a place, instead of making a hurried sightseeing trip,” said Xia. “Economic factors also play a part. Even students from well-off families may prefer volunteer travel because they want to be independent from their parents’ financial support.”

It’s not easy to apply for a position as a volunteer traveler. You need an appealing resume to stand out from the large number of applicants. Last year, Li Cheng, a college student, sent 10 resumes before she got one reply from a hotel in Xiamen. In fact, most hotels require that applicants speak standard Mandarin, in addition to being outgoing. Cooking and English skills are optional, but having them will undoubtedly give you an upper hand.

Even though Li had little choice in her destination, her one-month stay in Xiamen was still an unforgettable experience. Li said that volunteer travel is all about slowing down to get to know the people and places in a city.

25. What’s applicants’ main purpose of applying to be a volunteer in a hotel?

A. To learn some social skills.

B. To explore their target place.

C. To contribute to family income.

D. To prepare for their own business.

26. Why does the number of resumes for “volunteer traveler” rise sharply during the vacations?

A. The hotels need more volunteers then.

B. Tourism booms during the holidays.

C. The majority of the applicants are students.

D. Students lose financial support from their parents.

27. Which is necessary for someone to become a volunteer traveler?

A. Graduating from a famous college.                                B. Having an outgoing personality.

C. Speaking standard English.                                     D. Being able to cook.

What do they really mean?

Food manufacturers and retailers are letting shoppers down. This is the view of the CWS, which has just brought out a new report.

According to the report, shoppers believe food labels(标签) because they think there are strict regulations in place. 36 So the food industry can get away with all sorts of tricky strategies to make products look bigger and sound better than they are.

The report has identified the different ways in which shoppers are misled.    37____ Descriptions on packaging are sometimes inaccurate in an attempt to oversell the product. One example given in the report is the phrase "haddock fillets", used for a product that is in fact cut from big blocks of fish rather than individual slices.

38 These include "traditional", "wholesome", or "premium". The claim that a brand is "90% fat-free" hides the fact that it contains 10% fat, which above recommended levels. Phrases such as "free from preservatives" make a virtue out of a normal attribute of food.

Labels have a wide variety of text sizes on them. You sometimes need a magnifying glass to read the small print. 39

Another deliberate type of misinformation lies in the image. Many pictures on packets use small plates to make the product look bigger. 40

However, misleading messages on packaging could soon be a thing of the past. The CWS recently produced a code which, if used, would end the current inaccuracies and half-truths. It has called on the government to support it as a way of improving food standards.

A. Meaningless adjectives are often used to give a positive message.

B. An officer says the labels will receive very serious consideration.

C. Photographs are sometimes retouched(修饰) to achieve the same effect.

D. By contrast, the hard sell (强行推销) information is given emphasis.

E. The rules are, in reality, very weak at present.

F. This result has not pleased the food industry.

G. The most common of these is poor labeling.

Would you like to travel into space, and experience weightlessness like an astronaut? Meet Sir Richard Branson — a billionaire English businessman, who has made it his life’s duty to make space accessible to tens of thousands of people. Branson’s company, Virgin Galactic, has been testing low orbital (轨道的) spacecrafts that can carry passengers into space.

In 1996, the “Ansari X Prize” challenged private teams around the world to build a manned vehicle that could travel to an altitude of 62 miles (100 kilometers) — the boundary where outer space begins — and back. The winner would be awarded $10 million. Twenty-six companies rose to the challenge. Only one company succeeded. In 2004, Scaled Composites’s SpaceShipOne made it to space and back twice, winning the prize money and making history.

Richard Branson was attracted to the possibility of ordinary citizens going into space. He announced a partnership with Scaled Composites to build a next generation vehicle. SpaceShipTwo, announced in 2009, was designed to carry six passengers and two pilots.

An aircraft carrier would carry SpaceShipTwo to a height of 50,000 feet and then release it. Rocket engines would push the spacecraft at 3.5 times the speed of sound, sending it 62 miles above the surface of Earth in about 90 seconds. Once in space, passengers will experience a short period of zero gravity, and can get out of their seats and float around the cabin. After five minutes in space, the vehicle would re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and land on a runway. The total time from lift-off to touchdown is expected to be about 3.5 hours.

On October 11, 2010, SpaceShipTwo completed its first successful test flight. Last year, Richard Branson announced that the first commercial flight could begin as early as 2015. However, just a few months ago, while on a test run, SpaceShipTwo broke apart within two minutes of being released from the aircraft carrier. Will this be a setback (挫折) for space tourism? Anyway, it is just a matter of time before the technology is perfected and space travel becomes a reality.

We all admit that modern technology has taken over our lives, for good of course. Being young people, we are   41    at the development of technology. But there is a group of people who cannot    42    with new technology---- our parents.

Building Trust in a Relationship Again

Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences, 16 .  Trust is a risk. But you can’t be successful when there’s a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.

Unfortunately, we’ve all been victims of betrayal. W hether we’ve been suffer from, lied to , misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore, 17  .  It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.

18  Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.

19  If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, we’ll have our trust tested or violated.

You didn’t lose “everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 20 instead, it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

  A.Learn to really trust yourself.

B.It is putting confidence in someone.

C.Stop regarding yourself as the victim.

D.Remember that you can expect the best in return.

E.They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again.

F.This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future  relationships.

G.Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened.
