A sense of humor is something highly valued.A person who has a great sense of humor is often considered to be happy and socially confident. However, humor is a double-edged sword.Sometimes it can damage self-respect and annoy others.

People who use bonding humor tell jokes and generally lighten the mood. They're thought to be good at reducing the tension in uncomfortable situations. They often make fun of their common experiences, and sometimes they may even laugh off their own misfortunes. The basic message they deliver is: We're all alike,we find the same things funny, and we're all in this together.

Put-down humor,on the other hand,is an aggressive type of humor used to criticize others through teasing. When it's aimed against politicians,as it often is,it's extremely funny and mostly harmless. But in the real world,it may have a harmful effect. An example of such humor is telling friends an embarrassing story about another friend. When challenged about their teasing, the put-down jokers might claim that they are "just kidding,"thus allowing themselves to avoid responsibility. This type of humor, though considered by some people to be socially acceptable, may hurt the feelings of the one being teased and thus have a bad effect on personal relationships.

Finally,in hate-me humor, the joker is the target of the joke for the amusement of others. This type of humor was used by comedians John Belushi and Chris Farley—both of whom suffered for their success in show business.A small amount of such humor is charming, but routinely offering oneself up to be embarrassed destroys one's self-esteem,and fosters depression and anxiety.

So it seems that being funny isn't necessarily an indicator of good social skills and well-being.In certain cases,it may actually have a negative effect on interpersonal relationships.

A new study by the Pew Research Center shows that the number of dads who choose to stay home and care for their children and families has quadrupled (成为四倍) over the past 25 years. Can social and economic factors explain the change?

Make no mistake; fathers who are the primary caregiver for their children are far from the norm. In fact, they are only 16% of all stay-at-home parents.but that number is up from 10% since 1989. When pew started analyzing data. The steady growth since then suggests that these numbers represent a growing trend.

“It’s up from 1.1 million to 2 million,” says Gretchen Livingston, one of the study authors. “ More significantly, the number of man who say they stay at home specially to take care of their home and children is at an all-time high, more than four times the rate of fathers who gave that same answer in 1989.”

As women have taken on more high-paying careers, the assumption that they’ll stay home with the children has become less automatic.

“My wife and I were earning about the same income at the time just after our daughter was born. We felt that if someone was going to raise our children it would have to be one of us,” says Al Watts, the president of the national At-Home Dad Network. “My wife was promoted shortly after she got back from maternity leave and that rise in pay would allow us to live on one income.”

In 1989, 10% of fathers were stay-at-home parents. In 2014, 16% are. Fourteen percent of the fathers without a high school diploma stay at home, compared to 3% of those with a college degree. In 1989, more than half (56%) of dads who stayed at home cited (引用) illness or disability ass the top reason. Thirty-five percent cite that reason now. Only 5% of stay-at-home dads in 1989 said caring for family was the main reason for staying at home. Now, that number is 21%.

The rise in stay-at-home dads coincides with a change in social and economic trends regarding

women in the workforce, says Farnoosh Torabi, author of When She Makes More. “We know that before they even get married, women are out-earning and out-earning men,” she says, noting that younger women are now getting more degrees and better paying jobs, on average, than men.

61. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph means that ________.

  A. there are not enough stay-at-home dads

  B. being stay-at-home dads is a trend now

  C. stay-at-home dads are still in the minority

  D. stay-at-home dads are making a mistaken decision

62. What impresses Gretchen Livingston most according to paragraph 3?

  A. The total number of stay-at-home dads.

  B. The purpose of becoming stay-at-home dads.

  C. The quick increase in the number of stay-at-home dads.

  D. The reason for the wide acceptance of stay-at-home dads.

63. What made Al Watts decide to become a stay-at-home dad?

  A. His being out of work.           B. His making more money.

  C. His wife’s wage increase.       D. His wife’s encouragement.

64. In Farnoosh Torabi’s opinion, the rise in stay-at-home dads results from _________.

  A. the terrible economic environment

B. the rise in women’s economic status

  C. the ever-increasing cost of raising children

D. the change of men’s attitude towards family.

When we think about the dreams we have, it is surprising to see how many people failed even if they could have succeeded. So today I’m going to tell you five ways to kill your dreams.

l         Believe in overnight success.

Everyone knows the story of a tech guy who built a mobile app and sold it for a lot of money. __8_ If you investigate further, you will find that he is well educated and has been working on the project for 20 years. Therefore, your overnight success is always a result of what you’ve done in your life.

Constantly, people around you always have opinions on which path you should take. But whichever way you choose, there are other ways you have to pick as well. And one day you need to solve those problems yourself.

l         Decide to rest when success is guaranteed.

When your life is going great and everything is set—time to rest. Actually, when you’re growing towards a peak, you need to work even harder and find yourself another peak. If you were content with what you’ve accomplished, it would stop you from a greater success. ___10

l         Believe the fault is someone else’s.

I constantly see people saying, “I created this great product, but the market is so bad.” If you have dreams, it’s your responsibility to make them happen. Yes, the market may be bad. But if no one bought your product, surely there is something there that is your fault. ___11___

l         Believe that the only things that matter are the dreams themselves.

Achieving a dream is a short moment, but your life is not. ___12___ And the only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey.

How the World Wide Web Started

Tim Berners-Lee is the man who wrote the software(软件) programme that led to the foundation of the World Wide Web. Britain played an important part in developing the first generation of computers. The parents of Tim Berners-Lee both worked on one of the earliest commercial (商业的) computers and talked about their work at home. As a child he would build models of computers from packing material. After graduating from Oxford University he went on to the real thing. In the 1980s scientists were already communicating using a primitive version (版本) of e-mail . In 1990 he wrote the HTTP(服务程序所用的协议) and HTML(超文本链接标示语言) programmes which form the basis of the World Wide Web .

The next year his programmes were placed on to the Internet . Everyone was welcome to use them and improve them if they could . Programmers used this codes(密码) to work with different operating systems. New things like web browsers(浏览器) and search engines were developed. Between 1991 and 1994 the number of web pages rose from 10 to 100,000.

In 1994 Tim Berners-Lee formed the newly formed World Wide Web consortium(协会), or W3C. More than 200 leading companies and laboratories are represented(代表) by W3C. In the middle of the 20th century people were worried about whales. The number of whales killed worldwide came up to 66,000 per year. However, people weren't worried about the whale as an endangered animal.Instead, they were worried about the whale industry, which would disappear if there were no whales. In 1946,the International Whaling Commission was established. It limited the whale hunting for every country and controlled the whale industry. But the commission recognized that the limitation wasn't enough. They set a worldwide law against hunting whales with only two exceptions: the hunt for scientific research and "aboriginal whaling".Aboriginal whaling allows some countries to hunt a limited number of whales because it is a part of their culture. Some countries like Japan and Norway don't care about the law;they make excuses to hunt whales and sell the products. They only care about the money.

Many fishermen complain that dolphins, also a kind of whale, steal their fish. Therefore, they kill thousands of them.In fact, this is not the truth. In reality there are so many fishermen who steal the fish from each other. Some whale hunters say that they catch the animals for scientists. They have to research what whales are eating. For that, they kill them and look into their stomach. The truth is that they only want to sell the meat.Today scientists want to observe live whales for their research.

Many whale families are not protected and thousands of them are killed.Nobody knows if all whale families would survive, even if humans end all whale hunting today. The pollution of the oceans increases fast and the poison gets into the bodies of the animals. Many of them get sick and die.The human being has killed 90%-95% of many whale families.Others are already extinct.

Today some international organizations try to protect whales. They make reports to explain how important and endangered whales are.Now people are becoming more interested in whales and a complete new industry has developed, whale watching, which you may want to learn about.

It’s impossible to achieve complete balance in life.   36

Here are five ways you can follow to find happiness.

1. Give to others.

Many people are completely absorbed in their own problems. But helping others is really satisfying. In the 21st century, people are always busy with their own business. They never know the true feeling of helping others. If you can give a little time, you may feel happiness you never thought possible.

2. Take up an activity.

Everyday life can be extremely stressful, between kids, work and home life. People always complain that their time is limited. Taking part in something as an individual seems hard.   37   It can be a sport, night class or even just going for a run. A hobby can help you feel happy.

3.   38

Not only does your body need to relax, but your mind also needs to relax and this won’t happen with the family around.

4. Don’t focus on the negatives.

A negative attitude is often the reflection of someone who is overall not happy with his or her life. Adopting a negative approach is not good for anyone.   39   If we can look at things from a different perspective, we may find that life is not that bad. There are still some happy things around us.

5. Be grateful for what you have

40   A man without a penny to his name can be just as happy as a man who has plenty of money. Instead of thinking about what you don’t have, look at what you do have and in turn you will not only be a happy person, but you will be filled with confidence.

True happiness is hard to achieve. But if you put these ideas into practice, you will see what the outcome will be.

A. However, you should always make time to take up at least one hobby.

B. Obviously, being happy is everyone’s dream.

C. Rest and stay with your family.

D. Instead, try to find the positive in most situations.

E. Find time for yourself.

F. However, a feeling of happiness can be found through simple things.

G. Happiness has nothing to do with material things.
