People in the United States honour their parents with two special days: Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father's Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care to their children. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother's Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor their parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues(for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is "the thought that counts". Greeting card stores, florists, and makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
19. Which is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for their parents?

D. Their parents passed away before they grew up.
20. What do you learn from the passage?
A. Mother's Day and Father's Day are both in May.
B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.
C. Not all the children respect their parents.
D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.
21. Which do you think is RIGHT about "carnation”?
A. It only has two kinds of color.

Dear sir,
Welcome to our school.
Secret codes(密码)keep messages private. Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.
People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 71 Code breaking never lags(落后)far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography.
There are three main types of cryptography. 72 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” spell out the hidden message “Meet me.”
73 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26.If we substitute a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read“13 5 5 20 13 5.”
A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 74 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me”. The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.” 75 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently.
A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book.
B. In any language, some letters are used more than others.
C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message.
D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them.
E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out.
F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words.
G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.
Seventh-grader Jonah Maxwell has become a local well-known person after an anti-bullying (反欺凌) video he made became popular online.
He wrote and directed a 6-minute 30-second film with friends from school whose faces can not be seen as a way to take back power from bullies insulting (辱骂) others on social media.
“If it’s happened to you, you have to tell someone. If you are doing it, just think about this: It’s just as easy to be nice as it is to be mean and manners and respect cost nothing,” he said.
This social media has given bullying a whole new life far beyond fights in the school lunchroom or hallways.
“It’s mainly happening through social media but there is physical and social bullying. I have seen people getting ‘booked’ in hallways—somebody gets knocked into and the books fall all over the floor. The victim gets embarrassed.”
“My dad told me when he was a kid the bullying would stop at 3:30 every day. I told him it’s not like that anymore. They can get you 24/
7, ”he says in the video. Jonah said bullying can start very early in grade school.
He has been interested in making videos from an early age. The first video he ever made was with a Crayola camera when he was 6 years old. His dad is a filmmaker with the final editing for his anti-bullyin
g video.
The youngster said he wants people to “make the
ir voices heard without fear” and tell someone if they are being bullied.— “Tell someone - it’s too hard to go through something like this alone, ” he said.
“The bullying never stops if there is social media involved—you don’t leave it behin
d you at the school gates. It’s scary for me to think what kids go through but what is worse is that the kids don’t feel they should or can tell. Jonah’s message clearly states it doesn’t have to be this way,” his mother said.
Maxwell said teachers in the United States and abroad, including Brazil, Irelan
d, the United Kingdom and Australia, have been showing the video in school. “If it changes one person’s life it
will have made a difference in our lives, ” she said.
32. In Jonah’s anti-bullying video, ________.
A. the bullied are sh
own as faceless to protect their privacy

33. The example of people getting “booked ”in hallways is mentioned to ________.
A. prove that bullying happens anytime
B. describe bulling on social media

Facing the Enemies Within
We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. Fear can destroy fortunes. Fear can destroy relationships. Fear, if left unchecked, can destroy our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies living inside us. 16
The first enemy we face is indecision(优柔寡断). Indecision is the thief of opportunity. 17 Take a sword to this enemy.
The second enemy inside is doubt. 18 But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities. Worst of all, they doubt themselves. I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart. 19
Do battle with the enemy. Do battle with your fears. 20 Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit(追求) of the things you want and the person you want to become.
A
. Sure, there’s room for healthy doubt. You can’t believe everything.
B. Build your courage to fight what’s holding you back, what’s keeping you from your goals and dreams.
C
. Let me tell you about two of the other enemies we face from within.
D. Below are the ways which might be useful for us to overcome our fears.
E. Doubt is an enemy. Go after it. Get rid of it.
F. It will steal your chances for a better future.
When it comes to materials to do good to our body, it must be mentioned that there are all sorts of foods to everyone’s taste. Some foods are known to have a completely ruined effect on your brain function, and nutritionists advise us not to consume them too much in order to limit their negative impacts. Here are some top foods that kill your intelligence.
1. Sugar
Sugar and sugary products are bad not only for your waistline, but for your brain function as well. Long-term consumption of sugar can create a lot of neurological (神经系统的) problems, and it can also do harm to your memory. On the other hand, sugar can also bring damage to your ability to learn. So avoid the products.
2. Alcohol
Alcohol is known to harm your liver (肝) in the long run, and it also causes what is known as "brain fog", a feeling of mental confusion. It acts like a cloud that impacts your ability to think clearly, as well as your memory. Have you ever noticed that you cannot remember common items’names? This might be influenced by high alcohol intake, which impacts the balance of the brain.
3. Junk Food
A recent study has revealed that junk food can change the chemicals in the brain, thus leading to symptoms associated with depression and anxiety. Besides, foods that are high in fat can also produce some symptoms that are similar to the signs of "miss" when you stop consuming them. These foods affect the production of dopamine (多巴胺), an important chemical that promotes happiness and an overall feeling of well-being.
4. Very Salty Foods
Everybody knows that salty foods affect your blood pressure and they are very hard on your heart. However, as research suggests, foods that contain high amounts of salt can affect your learning function and make your ability to think imperfect. Otherwise stated, salty foods affect your intelligence! As a matter of fact, the consumption of salty foods has been shown to have the same effect as drugs, as they cause uncomfortable symptoms and hunger for salty foods.
5. Foods with Processed Proteins (蛋白质)
Meat is the richest source of high-quality protein, but avoids overly processed proteins such as hot dogs, sausages and so on. Unlike the natural proteins that help your body protect the nervous system, processed proteins do exactly the opposite. Better choose natural products, such as fish, dairy products, and seeds as these are natural, high-quality protein sources.

I was sitting at my favorite table in a restaurant last Sunday and wait for the food I had ordered to arrive. I suddenly found that Lin Ling, one of my classmate, worked like a waitress there. Honest speaking, it was great surprise for me to find her working there. As far as I know, she’s from a richer family. What was it that made her to work there? I walked up to her and asked her the reason. When asking, she said, “I just want to earn some pocket money so that we can help some children in poor areas go back to school.” What a good girl! I should learn for her.

High-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here's an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen hamburger in 60 seconds. However,it won't taste as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you're in that much of a hurry, you probably won't take time to toast the bun.High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn't make for better-tasting meals.
Most people get their news from high-tech sources like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It's also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs. However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip the rest.
Other high-tech time savers have similar disadvantages. For example, most people use the phone or e-mail to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you won't always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate. Similarly, when you word-process a homework assignment instead of handwriting it,you can check your spelling electronically and put in fancy headings. However, some students are so busy with the computer that they don't pay enough attention to the actual words they are writing.
29.What do we know about high-tech cooking?
A.It can't make much food. B.It is popular with every family.
C.It makes food slower than low-tech cooking. D.It can't make food as delicious as low-tech cooking.
30.What is an advantage of the news in newspapers compared to that on the Internet?
A.Quick updates. B.Live news events. C.Detailed information. D.Convenient news sources.
31.Which of the following proverbs can summarize the text?
A.Easy come, easy go. B.Better late than never. C.Every coin has two sides. D.I.earn to walk before you run.
The Horn of Plenty is one of the largest natural health food stores within the Greater Hamilton area. We are big supporters of buying locally and we are here to tell you why it is so important for your family, the community and the environment. The concept of buying locally is simple: buy food produced, grown, or raised as close to your home as possible. Not only will your food be fresher and tastier, but you are helping protect the environment and are supporting businesses within your community and reducing pollution.
Better for the environment
Sustainabilityand global warming are such hot topics at the moment, and many people want to do their bit to help support a healthier environment. Small action carried out by many people can make a big difference. Most materials in an average North American meal have traveled about 1,500 miles to get from farm to plate. To cut out a big part of this travel would greatly reduce not only pollution from transportation and refrigeration but also customers’ expenses as well.
Taste and nutritional content
Locally-grown fruits and vegetables are usually sold within 24 hours of being harvested. Because they are picked at the height of ripeness(成熟) and travel only a short distance to the market, their freshness, nutrition, and flavor are kept. Produce trucked in from far away may lose both taste and nutritional content. Community and home values
When you buy direct from a farmer or buy locally-grown foods, you are engaged in a time-honored tradition between a grower and an eater. You also help keep dollars within your community.
21. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that ___________.
A. global warming is the most serious problem now
B. North American food is rich in various kinds of materials
C. the increased cost of transporting food is passed on to the customers
D. most people support buying locally
22. Locally-grown fruits and vegetables taste good mostly because___________.
A. they are picked when they are fully grown
B. they are not polluted by chemical fertilizer
C. they can be harvested at any time
D. they are sent to the market at a high speed
23. According to the author, when you buy locally-grown foods ___________.
A. you can see how fruits and vegetables grow
B. you will contribute to protecting the environment
C. you will become much healthier and prettier
D. you are making money from your community
24. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The way to keep your food tasty and healthy.
B. The popularity of the Horn of Plenty.
C. The importance of protecting the environment.
D. The benefits of buying locally.
You can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyacv doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in your getting wet. That's why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. "Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(遮蓬)built into a street lamp. " he said.
The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.
In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360°motion sensor on the biberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone's using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on the streets where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
11.For what purpose did Belyacv create the lampbrella?
A.To predict a heavy rain.
B.To check the weather forecast.
C.To protect people from the rain.
D.To remind people to take an umbrella.
12.What do we know from Belyacv's words in Paragraph 2?
A.His creation was inspired by an experience.
B.It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.
C.Street lamps are protected by canopies.
D.He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.
13.What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the lampbrella?
| A.Its moving speed. | B.Its appearance. |
| C.Its installation. | D.Its safety. |
14.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The designer will open a company to promote his product.
B.The lampbrella could be put into immediate production.
C.The designer is confident that his creation is practical.
D.The lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.
Social worker Cathy Heying noticed a growing tendency among the homeless and unemployed people she served for nearly a decade at St.Stephen's Catholic Church in Minneapolis."At least twice a week, someone would mention car trouble as a reason for missing a job interview or not getting the kids to day care,"says Cathy,44."I thought if I could offer car repairs,I could prevent these problems."So in December 2012,with little more automotive experience than making small changes to improve her own motorcycle,Cathy signed up for a mechanics(机械学)program. After two years of taking a full-time course,Cathy obtained a part-time degree in auto technology from Dunwoody College of Technology.
Then she opened the Lift,a nonprofit garage offering affordable car repair for needy people."I had no mechanics,no volunteers, and only a few tools,"says Cathy. She operated from a partly closed area in a friend's garage. But she made it work.
One of Cathy's first customers,Linda Granger, was unemployed when her social worker referred her to the Lift. Her 20-year-old pickup truck had a new heater, timing belt, and brakes fixed by Cathy and a volunteer for 600total,which Lindai spaying off in 20 monthly installments. The same repairs would have cost at least $1,800 at a typical garage.
"There's no way I could have afforded it otherwise,"says Linda.
"It's been a hard journey from social worker to mechanic,"says Cathy."But compared with other people's struggles,I have nothing to complain about."
