Dear David,
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
When going through major life changes, like changing careers, I would change the people with whom I spent the most time. We’ve all gone through periods when the people in our lives have changed -- graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I don’t think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If you’ve ever experienced a major switch in your people environment, then you know that you change as well.
Most people don’t make these choices consciously, though. You might consciously decide to spend more time with a certain friend, or you may ask someone out on a date to begin a new relationship. But few people choose their existing friendships deliberately.
There’s no “getting rid of people”. People are always dropping into and out of each other’s lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You don’t get rid of anyone. The truth is that in order to make room for new people and new experiences, you may need to loosen up some of your existing connections.
What about loyalty? Shouldn’t you always be loyal to your friends? Once you have a close friend, even if his influence on you is slightly harmful, shouldn’t you stick by him?
Loyalty to a friend sometimes means having to let go. It means being loyal to his highest and best self as well. If someone is destroying his health by smoking, for example, you aren’t showing loyalty by smoking right along with him. True loyalty sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.
It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, “I’m sorry, but I can’t have you in my life anymore.” But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it’s often the best thing for the other person, too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that it’s also hurting the other person. For example, if you work for a violent boss, your acceptance of that situation is considered to be silent approval, encouraging your boss to continue to behave violently.
9. When experiencing major life changes, people may _______.
A. join a new social community B. influence their friends around
C. choose their friendships purposely D. have their people environment changed
10. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Everyone is supposed to have at least one friend.
B. It is unnecessary for you to make new friends.
C. You ought to treat your old and new friends equally.
D. Friendships still exist though there are fewer connections.
11. What is the author’s opinion on the loyalty to friends?
A. Never betray your close friends whatever happens.
B. Stick by your friends even though they do harm to you.
C. Correct their mistakes while you guard their goodness.
D. Break up with your friends immediately if they smoke.
12. How should we behave when employed by a violent boss?
A. We should accept what we are told to do. B. We should bravely disobey him if he is wrong.
C. We should stay silent and be in favor of him. D. We should give our boss courage to continue.

Why doesn’t the unemployment rate ever reach zero? Economists, who generally believe that supply tends to meet demand, have long thought about this question. Even in good times, i.e. not now, there are people who can’t find work. And even in bad times, i.e. now, there are job openings. With over 14 million people out of work and looking for a job, you would think every available job would be filled. But that’s not the case. Not now and not ever.
On Monday, the Nobel Prize committee awarded the prize for economics to the three scholars who have done the most to explain this phenomenon. Two of the winners are Americans, Peter Diamond of MIT and Dale Mortensen of Northwestern. The third winner is Christopher Pissarides, who teaches at the London School of Economics and was born on Cyprus.
Like most economists, what they have found about why the jobless and ready-employers don’t find each other seems obvious. You have to find out there is job opening you are interested in. Employers need to get resumes. It takes a while for both employers and employees to make the decision that this is what they want. And these guys came up with a framework to study the problem of why people stay unemployed longer than they should and what can be done about it.
So what would today’s Nobel Prize winners do to solve the current problem of the unemployed? And does the awarding of the prize contribute to the politicians’ lowering joblessness?
Speaking from his north London home, Pissarides told The Associated Press the announcement came as “a complete surprise” though his work had already helped shape thinking on both sides of the Atlantic.
For example, the New Deal for Young People, a British government policy aimed at getting 18-24-year-olds back on the job market after long periods of unemployment, “It is very much based on our work,” he said.
“One of the key things we found is that it is important to make sure that people do not stay unemployed too long so they don’t lose their feel for the labor force,” Pissarides told reporters in London. “The ways of dealing with this need not be expensive training – it could be as simple as providing work experience.”
28. According to the writer, which is true about finding jobs?
A. It is always difficult to find a job.
B. Everyone can find a job in good times.
C. It is possible to find a job even in times as bad as now.
D. Contrary to popular belief, it is easier to find a job in bad times.
29. What is it that leads to their winning the prize?
A. They have found the reason for unemployment.
B. They have put forward a set of ideas to deal with unemployment.
C. They have found out why people don’t want to be employed.
D. They have long studied the problem of unemployment.
30. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Pissarides thinks his work surprising.
B. The work of Pissarides has influenced many economists.
C. Some of the winners’ ideas have been put into practice.
D. It is probable that unemployed young people in Britain benefit from Pissarides’ work.
31. What is effective in dealing with unemployment according to Pissarides?
A. Spending large sums of money on training.
B. Providing work experience.
C.Teaching some knowledge of economics.
D. Keeping people unemployed for some time.
Images of school gyms ________ with parents have been widely shared on social media, causing a heated debate.

Nuclear energy has always been controversial. But since the tsunami and nuclear disaster in Fukushima(Japan) in 2011, the issue is back in the headlines. And the world is divided—some countries are planning more nuclear plants, while others have promised to shut theirs down.
After Fukushima, Germany decided to switch off all its nuclear plants by 2022. __36__ In fact, almost 80% of France's electricity comes from nuclear power, the highest percentage in the world. And in the US, the Obama administration said it “continues to support the expansion of nuclear power, despite the crisis in Japan.”
Nuclear supporters claim nuclear power can help the environment. __37__ So, pronuclear countries argue that nuclear power allows them to generate energy without contributing to climate change. Britain's chief scientific adviser(John Beddington) supports this view.
Nuclear power is also relatively cheap. Renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro and wind power may be clean, but they're expensive; and right now, they require a lot of investment. __38__ So, while many people may prefer their energy to come from a renewable source, not so many are prepared to pay higher energy bills.
__39__ For a start, nuclear waste is very difficult to dispose of, and remains toxic to humans for thousands of years. And even before Fukushima, there were several highprofile nuclear disasters. The most famous is probably the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, in the Ukraine. The radiation from the meltdown spread all over Europe, affecting thousands of people.
The nuclear energy issue is very complex. __40__ As a Japanese commentator recently said, “It's been a bad year for the ‘nuclear village’, but I don't think they're down and out yet.” The battle continues.
A.And it doesn't look like it'll be resolved anytime soon.
B.The main argument against nuclear energy is that it isn't safe.
C.Nuclear power could only end the world instead of saving it!
D.Many people believe that they will benefit from the unclear energy.
E.Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear power doesn't create greenhouse gases.
F.But France and the United States remain loyal supporters of atomic energy.
G.This higher cost of using “green energy” is usually passed onto the consumer.
China has said it will _______ support for foreign investment in the country’s car industry to encourage domestic car makers.
A. withdraw B. distribute C. command D. address
Zebra crossings - the alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface - are meant to remind drivers that pedestrians may be trying to get across. Unfortunately, they are not very effective. A 1998 study done by the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering at Sweden's Lund University revealed that three out of four drivers maintained the same speed or even speeded up as they were approaching a crossing. Even worse? Only 5% stopped even when they saw someone trying to get across.
Now a mother-daughter team in Ahmedabad, India has come up with a clever way to get drivers to pay more attention - a 3-D zebra crossing with an optical illusion (视错觉) .
Artists Saumya Pandya Thakkar and Shakuntala Pandya were asked to paint the crosswalks by IL&FS, an Indian company that manages the highways in Ahmedabad. The corporation was looking for a creative solution to help the city's residents to cross the busy accident-prone (易出事故的) roads safely. Thakkar and Pandya, who had previously seen images of3-D zebra crossings that gave drivers the illusion of logs(原木) of wood on the streets in Taizhou, China, decided to test if a similar way would work in India.
Sure enough, in the six months that the 3-D crosswalks have been painted across four of the city's most dangerous highways, there have been no accidents reported! The artists say that while it may appear that the zebra crossing could cause the drivers to brake suddenly and endanger the vehicles behind, such is not the case. Because of the way the human eye works, the illusion is only visible from a distance. As they get closer, the painting looks just like any other ordinary zebra crossing. The creators hope that their smart design will become increasingly common throughout India and perhaps even the world. So let's look forward to it.
18. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Common zebra crossings don't function well
B Most drivers will slow down at zebra crossings
C Drivers have to stop when approaching zebra crossings
D. About 95% of the drivers choose to speed up when approaching zebra crossings
19. Why do drivers seeing the 3-D zebra crossings slow down?
A. Because the drivers mistake them for logs of wood on the streets
B. Because the drivers consider the safety of pedestrians
C. Because the drivers are afraid of being fined for breaking the traffic rules
D. Because the drivers don't want to brake suddenly and endanger the vehicles behind
20. The last paragraph is mainly about____
A. the theory of the 3-D zebra crossings
B. the popularity of the 3-D zebra crossings
C. the shortcoming of the 3-D zebra crossings
D. the positive effect of the 3-D zebra crossings
21. What is the author's attitude towards the 3-D zebra crossings?
A. Cautious B Doubtful C. Approving D. Disapproving
If ______ something you don’t want to eat, just refuse politely.
A. you give B. being given C. given D. are given
