On January 5th, students in our school visited Robot World, which we saw a great diversity of robot. I was amazing to find those robots could do a great number of things just like real people, included playing chess, playing the piano and drawing pictures. Whats more, the robots were in different kinds and shapes, which made us enjoyable. In addition, that excited me most is the show given by a group of robots. They danced just as if they were dancers on the stage. By visiting Robot World, I have learned a lot of about robots, especial about their functions and shapes. The great human wisdom is so powerful that it make us feel more comfortable live in the world.

In the far north-eastern corner of South Africa, Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve (野生动植物繁殖保护区) in the country. And it is also the most famous     41     area on the African continent.     42     over 7,332 square miles, Kruger is a wonderland of wildlife. It has 507 species of birds and 147 species of animals. It also has a fair bit of     43    —it goes back to 1898.     If you go to South Africa, you need to pay attention     58     the threat of malaria(疟疾). Kruger is one of the only two South African national parks that have a problem about the     59    .

A disadvantage of Kruger is that it     60     a long way from South Africa's other well-known tourist attractions-Cape Town, the Garden Route.

“You’re leaving again?” asked my daughter as she saw me packing my carry-on.

More than her words, it was her face that pierced (刺穿) my heart ---I could see how crestfallen she was.

“It’s only for two nights, “I explained.

But that didn’t matter to her. It was just one more trip after barely being home for five days. I decided in that moment to travel less whenever possible and I managed to avoid flying altogether for most of the summer. As a result, it was a summer full of discoveries. I realized that my kids really were proud of me. In their time away from me they had learned lessons I couldn’t have imagined.

Recently I began traveling a lot again. But this time it was different, mainly due to the fact that I had seen firsthand that my children value strong female role models. They realize that hard work pays off. Being away from them even for a day at a time in many ways had done them a lot of good.

In particular, being a working mom is teaching my daughter how important it is to be independent and that you can follow your dreams. In many ways, her idea of a professional woman is much more realistic than what I imagined when I was her age. I think that even at nine years old she already knows that for all the success you might achieve, there is a price to pay, whether it’s long hours, spending time away from those you love, or simply not having the energy to have fun at times. I know the wishes I would devote all of my time to her, but honestly, even if I didn’t work I would rather she learned not to depend on me for everything, She needs to realize that she can fly on her own --- and that isn’t possible if I am hovering over her every single second of the day .

I have also realized that having a career sets a good example for my son. He is not afraid of a strong woman, and has a great respect for them. When he’s older, this will help him build healthier relationship.

Therefore, for all the working moms out there who work long hours, remember to value the positive lessons you might be teaching your kids.

28. The underlined word “crestfallen” in Paragraph 2 can best be replaced by “_________” .

A. upset            B. excited          C. lucky            D. guilty

29. How did the author feel about traveling a lot after the summer ?

A .She felt even worse than ever.           B. She felt quite proud of herself.

C. She felt very sorry for her kids.            D. She felt much better than before.

30. The author hopes that her daughter will _______________________.

A. become more and more independent      B. be realistic about all her problems

    C. become a very successful lady                D. become an honest person

31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text ?

A. To tell stories about her two kids                  B. To show how to teach kids about careers

C. To encourage women to work as hard as possible  D. To prove kids can benefit a lot from working moms

When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system
(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."
12. The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements except

that __________.
   A. they must reach the age of 60
   B. they should be easy to make friends with
   C. they must swim outdoors at least 8 times in the four cold months

D. they must agree to swim outdoors from November through February
13. Doctors __________.
   A. encourage people to take part in cold-water swimming actively
   B. point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimming

C. believe swimming is helpful both in winter and in summer

D. have different ideas about the medical effects of cold-water swimming
14. The Polar Bears like to swim all the year round, for __________.
   A. they can remain young

B. it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winter

C. they find it enjoyable and interesting

D. they might meet fewer troubles in life
15. The passage is mainly about __________.
   A. a group of cold-water swimming lovers
   B. the polar bears' life
   C. doctors' ideas about cold-water swimming
   D. the requirements of the Polar Bear Club

Parents who get involved in their kids __58__ with peers(伙伴) grow kids who don’t know how to avoid much less trouble.

These kids have anxieties and fears of all sorts and don’t want to leave their __59__. And their parents, when the time comes, don’t know how to __60__ being parents. You can imagine what will become of their future.

Last night’s meteor(流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothsclild, Emerald Valley’s mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.

“My family was so frustrated,” admitted town resident Duane Cosby, “We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.”

Astronomers—scientists who study stars and planets—have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it.

There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats, frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating(迁徙的)birds. According to the International Dark-Sky Association. “100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.”

Countless more animals casualties(伤亡)result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings, but some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase person’s chances of getting cancer.

Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is under way to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.

24. What do the astronomers complain about?

A. Meteor showers occur less often than before.

B. Their observation equipment is in poor repair.

C. Light pollution has remained unsolved for years.

D. Their eyesight is failing due to artificial lighting.

25. What is the author concerned about according to Paragraph 4?

A. Birds may take other migration paths.

B. Animals’ living habits may change suddenly.

C. Varieties of animals will become sharply reduced.

D. Animals’ survival is threatened by outdoor lighting.

26. Lighting regulations in Flagstaff, Arizona are put into effect to ______.

A. lessen the chance of getting cancer

B. create an ideal observation condition

C. ensure citizens a good sleep at night

D. enable all creatures to live in harmony

27. What message does the author most want to give us?

A. Saving wildlife is saving ourselves.

B. Great efforts should be made to save energy.

C. Human activities should be environmentally friendly.

D. New equipment should be introduced for space study.

                              Forgiveness

To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

        36        Try the following steps:

Calm yourself.       37       You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just dont see things the same way.     38     Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

39       If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself.       40         But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

A. Try to see things from your offender’s angle.

B. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

C. How should you start to forgive?

D. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.

E. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

F. Why should you forgive?

G. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.

The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching, and I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt“The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view?” shook my head stubbornly—and felt the ache in my tooth. I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky.

“If you come by right now,” the receptionist said, “the dentist will fit you in.”

I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others?

In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice—cold one.

When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, “Don’t worry. The dentist is very good. ”

“How long do I have to wait for him?” I asked impatiently.

“Come on, he is coming. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,” the assistant said.

“The artwork?” I was puzzled.

The chair went back, suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist wasAt that moment, I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.
