While serious training is important for all dogs, playtime is just as important.   36   Use these games to help teach your dog how to play.

1. Hide and Seek

Hide and seek isn’t just for kids. Dogs can really enjoy this game. Pick up one of your dog’s favorite toys or treats. Tell your dog to stay.   37   When you are ready, call your dog to come to you. If possible, squeak (使吱吱叫) the toy or shake the treats. Reward your dog with praise and the toy or treat when she finds you.

2. Fetch

Many dogs have a natural ability to fetch. Other dogs can be taught how.   38   Play indoors with a soft toy or outdoors in a fenced-in area with a ball or disc. For dogs that really love to run, try this game of fetch!

3. Find the Treat

Dogs have superior senses of smell, and most love to use their noses to find food. Let your dog use her brain and her nose to find hidden goodies. First, have your dog stay out of sight. Then, hide her favorite treats in various places around the room.   39   If help is needed, you can lead her around or point to areas for her to explore.

Whatever the game, safety comes first! Remember to watch your dog for signs of exhaustion or overheating when you are playing. Stop if your dog seems tired or shows signs of anxiety.   40   When other dogs or people are around, it may create a dangerous distraction.

A. Then, go to find a good hiding place.

B. Try different games to see which your dog responds to best.

C. A good game of fetch can be played almost anywhere.

D. You can include games in training as well.

E. Also be aware of your surroundings when playing with your dog.

F. Encourage your dog to play with other dogs.

G. Bring your dog back in and tell her to “go find!”

How to teach a child to respect

As a child grows out of being an infant and begins to notice and react to the world around him, you may find yourself wondering how you possibly impart (传授) all of the things that he needs to become a responsible, respectful adult.    16    A child who learns to respect all he meets not only receives respect from others, but also learns to respect himself as well. Here are some instructions.

Show your child respect. This is perhaps the best way to teach your child how to respect others. Listen to your child by giving him your full attention and he will learn to listen to you, understanding how important this is in communication.

17    The more you say “please” and “thank you”  to your child, the more likely he will learn to use them with you and others. Politeness then becomes a normal part of any conversation.

Agree to disagree.    18    Explain your decision so that he will understand your reasoning and expect respectful responses. Disagreeing with you doesn’t equate to disobedience (违抗).

Control your impulse (冲动)to overact. When a situation arises between you and your child that requires calmness, keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behaviour.    19___

Praise, praise, praise! So much is focused on what a child does wrong and how to correct it that the accomplishments are not celebrated enough.    20___

A. Teach manners by using polite requests and responses.

B. Try to remember that a child won’t always agree with you.

C. Respect is necessary for a meaningful and successful life.

D. If he sees you lose your temper, he is more likely to respond that way in future.

E. A child may act like he pleases, but will respect being given limits.

F. When you see your child exhibit respectful behaviour, make sure he knows just how proud you are of him.

G. Setting a good example is the best way to start a child on the path to respect.

You support someone when you help him or her through a _41  time. However, the best part is

that when you support others, you are also supporting yourselves. When you  42  to give support to others, it is usually a 43  that you are also stopping giving support to yourself

One of my friends, Donna, told me a story recently that clearly showed the _44  of support.

Several years ago, Donna had just__  45  her boyfriend of two years and she was having a very _46 time, accepting the loss. She refused to be _47  and stayed at home alone, which48was not

helping. She just couldn't  49  crying all the time.

Early one morning, Donna  50  a phone call with some  51  news:a car accident had

claimed her best friend's brother's life. Donna had known this friend, Mary, and her brother nearly

her entire life, and the news was destructive. Donna _52   her sadness and got in the car as soon as possible, driving to her friend's house to be with her. During the _53,Donna held Mary close

while she cried, sat by her and slept  54  Mary's bed to make sure she did not wake up alone in

the middle of the night. During that time she hardly felt any__   55   in her heart. Several weeks later,

when life began to return to  56  ,Donna realized the level of support she had given Mary far

overtook any support she had__57  herself during her dark time. She was able to use the  58.

she had given her friend as a mirror for the support she needed.

When you find yourself unable to support someone else,  59  yourself and see if there is

something within yourself that is not supporting.  60,when you give complete support to others, it

will mirror those places within you that require the same level of attention.

A lecturer was giving a lecture to his students on stress management. He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, ”How heavy do you think this glass of water is?”

All of the students tried to answer, and their answers ranged from 20g to 500g.

It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance. It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.

If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden is becoming increasingly heavier.

What you have to do is to put the glass down and rest for a while before holding it up again.” We have to put down the burden periodically(周期性地), so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on. Otherwise I think that we will break down on the half way and can’t realize our dreams as we planned. All of us should really keep this in mind.

So, before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow.

Whatever burdens you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can. If you do like this, you can greatly improve your work efficiency(效率) and life quality.

Life is short; let’s enjoy it to the fullest!

How to take notes and organize them

It’s really important that in school you can review what you’ve learned. Keeping good notes can be a most useful method. But you have to learn how to make your notebook work for you. Here are some tips.

36   Arrive on time or, better yet, early, with all the books and things you will need. Sit down and immediately take out your notebook, which you should then open up to a blank page for your notes.

Pay attention to the teacher’s cues(暗示) . Chances are good that your teacher will tell you when she’s about to tell you something you should write down.   37

38   By titling and dating your notes, it makes it a lot easier to find the notes you need to study for a particular test and to know what you did on a certain day.

Use dividers, numbering, pictures, and symbols. There are many ways to make your notes easier to read. For example, dividers are good if your teacher chooses to jump from topic to topic.   39  Everyone has a different note-taking style, so figure out which works for you.

Use them!  40   When your teacher informs you of an upcoming test or quiz, take out your notes each night before the test and review the material. Even a few minutes of skimming over well-taken, organized note can make a big difference in your understanding and grade.

A. Be prepared at the start of class.

B. Title and date all notes and work.

C. Notes are worthless if you don’t use them.

D. You should take at least a few notes every class.

E. There’s no need to take notes if you can’t read them later.

F. you should pay attention in class and listen to your teacher.

G. Number things that go in order, and use stars to draw the eye to important information.

If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important points to remember about rate, or speed, of reading:

1. Knowing why you are reading—what you are reading to find out—will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.

2. Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, arithmetic problems, science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.

3. Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news, and letters from friends, items, or bits of news from local, or hometown, paper, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors.

4. In some of your readings, you must change your speed from fast to slow to fast, as you go along. You need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful readings when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

29. According to the passage, your reading speed depends on ________.

A. whether the reading material is easy or difficult

B. what you are reading

C. what your purpose in reading something is

D. both B and C

30. If one wants to be relaxed by reading, one should take up ________.

A. a story book                  B. a book on science and technology

C. news, letters from friends       D. some material full of information

31. Which of the following readings should you read slowly and carefully?

A. Fairy tales.                   B. Aesop’s Fables.

C. Directions for use of a machine   D. An evening paper.

32. Which of the following can best express the main idea of the passage?

As is well know, when senior students graduate from school, most of their textbooks are thrown away, that are still in good condition. What waste of it ! I quite agree to the suggestion that we should recycle these textbooks. For one thing, recycling textbooks can save a lot of nature materials, which are used to making textbooks. For other, senior students may have plenty of useful notes on the pages. They are very helpful to those textbooks users. However , the cost of the books will unload some burden of the families of the students. Actually in Australia and some other countries, recycling textbooks are popular and that it gives us a good example. Why can’t they have a try?

Dear Sally

Now I’d like to tell you something about my part-time job this summer vacation, of which I worked like a guide in a travel agency. The work was interesting but tired. I think it was helpful to work this holiday. It was the first time that I have earned money on my own. I’ve come to understand how hard my parents work to support for the family. I used to keep on ask them for money, but now I’ll never waste money and learn to share worry to my parents. I’ve learnt how to get along well with others. What’s worse, I’ve gained some working and social experience and I have learnt something can’t be learnt from textbooks. All these will be good for my future. In the word, I had a wonderful and valuable summer vacation.

Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problem, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers to be of “moderate” (良好)quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.

The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.
