Every year at Halloween, American kids of all ages go trick-or-treating.
They hope to bring home as much candy as possible. Twelve-year-old Madelynne Caralli goes trick-or-treating, too. She is happy to get candy. But she really wants food. Madelynne trick-or-treats for donations to give to hungry people.
Madelynne’s project began several years ago. When she read a book about children who volunteer in their neighborhoods, she decided to collect food for a food bank. “My mom explained to me that there are people who don’t have any food, and I wanted to help them,” she explained.
Madelynne and her mother visited the food bank website to find out what kinds of food were needed. Then they got in touch with people in their neighborhood and told them that Madelynne would be looking for donations at Halloween. She and her mother suggested things like canned soups---food that can be stored for a long time.
On the night she trick-or-treats, Madelynne puts on her costume and walks through the neighborhood collecting food. She says she has been surprised to see how much food people are willing to give. Last Halloween, “some people gave me so much that the bags are breaking,” she says.
In the past four years, Madelynne has collected a total of 645 pounds of food. That amount of food helped feed 16 families for a week! Madelynne doesn’t carry all the food herself. Her friend Jordyn helps her carry the heavy bags. After Halloween, Madelynne and her mother take the food to the food bank. There it is sorted and then given to people who need it. This year, Madelynne plans on trick-or-treating her grandmother’s neighborhood as well as her own.
The neighbors also give Madelynne candy for her own trick-or-treating bag. But according to Madelynne, her favorite part of Halloween is not the candy. It is “the feeling that I am helping people.”

Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized(把……归类) as “honor” help you create this life of good feelings.
Here’s an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.
Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky (暗中的) excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.
Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?
In the first case, where we don’t tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk’s attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable actions we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.
There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions.
Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it’s easy to think and act honorably again when we’re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it’s started, it’s easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.
21. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our __________.
A. friendly relationship B. financial rewards
C. advertising ability D. self-respect
22. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to __________.
A. lying B. cheating C. stealing D. advertising
23. How will we feel if we let the clerk know the mistake?
A. We’ll be very excited. B. We’ll have a sense of honor.
C. We’ll feel unfortunate. D. We’ll feel sorry for the clerk.
24. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. Happiness through Honorable Actions B. Importance of Peacefulness
C. Ways of Gaining Self-respect D. How to Live Truthfully

A Deed a Day
It was a busy day as usual. I was making sandwiches and balancing the phone between my shoulder
and chin. The washing machine sounded as my husband walked in with our daughters. We had only about twenty minutes to eat 41 we had to take the girls to their next activity. My husband seemed a bit 42 that dinner was not on the table.
That night, I had a heavy 43 , thinking we were becoming taskmasters on an assembly line (流水线). We had become too 44 in our own tasks and not very considerate towards
those around us. We needed to do something to bring back some meaning into our lives. It needed to be something that would 45 our own agendas and energize us toward the common good.
I bought a notebook, named it “Our Deed Diary” and held a family meeting. I told my family I wanted us all to think about doing a 46 for others every day. It could be for each other or for people outside our 47 . And we all needed to write it down in the notebook.
I thought one deed a day was too easy. However, it was actually 48 than it seemed because it had to be something 49 what we had already done. Sending birthday cards to people we already sent cards to every year would not 50 .
We had a rough 51 . On some days, someone would forget to 52 a good deed, while on other days, we would forget to write our good deeds in the diary. After a few weeks though, I found myself waking up in the morning trying to 53 what good deed I could do for someone that day. My daughters began to rush to me after school to 54 me the good deed they had done.
Now, after a year, I am happy to say that it is making a(n) 55 in our lives. Instead of always 56 what the day will bring for us, we think about what we can do for someone else.
Who would have thought that trying to do a simple kindness a day would be so 57 ? I feel my daughters have felt inner joy that you can only 58 by giving to someone else from your heart. The best thing is that you feel so great about doing something for someone else; you don't even look for or expect anything in 59 . So, when someone does return the favor, it is an enormous and positive 60 .

Climate change has caused a rise in sea levels. This has increased the amount of salt in fresh water 61 (use)on coastal farms. As a result, farmers are 62 (gradual) unable to use fields close to the sea. However, Marc Van Rijsselberg, a farmer in the Netherlands is now using a 63 (mix) of sea and fresh water 64 (grow) healthy and tasty vegetables.
He teamed up with scientists from the Free University and divided a farm 65 eight negated areas. Separate pipes pumped fresh and sea water, and a computer program created water with eight levels of salinity (含盐度).
The water levels and the levels of salinity was 66 (control) by computerized measuring devices called “sensors”. Mr. Van Rijsselberg said he was able to harvest vegetables from most of the eight testing areas. He said the vegetables were smaller than 67 grown in fresh water. But he said they also had more sugar and salt, so they tasted much 68 (good).
He found that potatoes grew better than the other vegetables in the combination of sea and fresh water. Mr.Van Rijsselberg said four kinds of these potatoes would be sent to Pakistan 69 thousands of hectares of land 70 (damage) by salinization last year.
