Nowadays, some students would like to live in a dormitory. Instead, they rented houses outside the school. There are advantages for all of them. Living in a dormitory can increase friendship and cooperation among classmates, but of course it is safer. Besides, a dormitory is more like a society, where enables students to learn to get along to each other, thus preparing for the social life. As for renting houses to live alone, it’s better for your study as you can feel freely in your own room without being interrupted by others. As a result, you can have a plenty of time to devote yourself to review your lessons wholeheartedly. But there may appear a few safety problem as you live outside the school. Anyhow as a student, I prefer living in a dormitory.

Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device which uses satellites to find the user’s position. It can find your position to within 20 metres. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.

GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.

There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates  its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.

Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate. There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

A pioneer of the sky, Amelia Earhart, was famous for one of her great achievements. She was the first woman fly around the world alone.

Amelia saw an airplane in the first time when she was eight years old. She would never have

dreamed that one day she will be a great pilot. But her first flight made her interesting in flying.

Also, her flying teacher was one of the very few women at the time whom knew how to fly. This

                              Money Matters

Parents should help their children understand money.  36   So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.

1. The basic function of money

Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the things he wants to have. If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier

37   When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways of using money.

2. Money lessons

Approach money lessons with openness and honesty.  38   If you must say “no” to a child’s request to spend money, explain, “You have enough toy trucks for now. ” Or, if the request is for many different things, say, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.”

3.  39

Begin at the grocery store. Pick out two similar brands of a product—a name-brand butter and a generic(无商标产品), for example. You can show your child how to make choices be-

tween different brands of a product so that you can save money.   40   If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.

A.   Wise decisions.

B.    The value of money.

C.   Permit the child to choose between them.

D.   Tell your child why he can have certain things.

E.    Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you.

F.    Talk about how the money bought the thing after you leave the toy store.

G.    The best time to teach a child anything about money is when he shows an interest.

“If,”he added, “_____ enough time, I would certainly have done it better.”

Kids with Special Needs

Kids with special needs refer to any kid who might need extra help because of medical, emotional, or learning problems. For example, disabled kids need wheelchairs. They not only need the equipment that helps them get around, but they might need to have ramps(斜坡) or elevators available.    36

Kids with an illness would have special needs, too.  37  Kids with sight problems might need Braille books to read. Kids with hearing problems might need hearing aids.

38    It might be harder to do normal things—like learning to read or just getting around school. The good news is that parents, doctors, nurses, teachers, and others can help. The goal is to help kids be as independent as possible.

Other kids also can be a big help. How? By being a friend. Kids who use a wheelchair or have lots of health problems want friends just as you do. But meeting people and making friends can be difficult.39

Be sure to tell a teacher if you see someone being bullied(欺侮) or teased.

40    You might carry the person’s books or do something simple, such as asking him or her to join you and your friends at lunch. It’s also important not to be “overly helpful” when no help is needed. Why? Because just like you, kids with special needs like to be as independent as they can be.

Being friendly to kids with special needs is one of the best ways to be helpful. As you get to know, they may help you understand what it’s like to be in their shoes. And you’ll be helping fill a very special need, one that everybody has—the need for good friends.

A.      Some kids might laugh at or make fun of them.

B.      They also might need to get a special bus to school.

C.      Life can be challenging for a kid with special needs.

D.     It’s good manners to try to offer help to kids with special needs.

E.      Also try to be helpful if you know someone with special needs.

F.      Kids with special needs usually live a harder life than normal kids.

G.     They might need medicine or other help as they go about their daily activities.

Long ago a Native American chief named Shenandoah lived with his tribes(部落) in what is now the state of Virginia. Little is known about Shenandoah, but in some way, the soft sound of his name was given to a river. The Shenandoah River still flows in a deep valley between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains, just as it did when Chief Shenandoah lived. It is a slow moving river, soft and as beautiful as its name. Some word experts who believe the word “Shenandoah” means “spruce river” because the waters of the river run through great forests of spruce trees(云杉).And this explanation could be correct.

However, there is an old Native American story which is far more beautiful than that of the experts. Centuries before Europeans came to the New World, there was a great lake of blue water hidden in the mountains of Virginia. For hundreds of years, Native American tribes lived near this lake, feeding on the fish from its clean waters. The Native Americans often climbed up the mountains and camped there during their long hunts for food. In the evenings they sat near their camp and looked down at the beautiful lake.

On a clear, starry night you could see thousands of stars shining and dancing on the water below. The Native Americans loved this lake, and because they could see the stars in it, they called the lake, “Clear Daughter of the Stars.”In their language, the word for this was “Shenandoah.”

One day the lake started to disappear. Its water ran out of the valley, through a break in the mountain side. The waters ran on and on until they joined another river known as the Potomac. At last, the lake was gone. In its place was only a river. It is the beautiful Shenandoah River today.

However, the word Shenandoah becomes well known to people because someone wrote a song about it some years ago.“Shenandoah” is perhaps one of America’s most recognizable folk songs. Some say the song refers to the river. Others say it is about the daughter of Chief Shenandoah. Regardless of what the song is about, "Shenandoah" remains an American classic.“O Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away you rolling river; O Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away I'm bound to go, 'Cross the wide Missouri …”
